I'm trying to test changes to our website, which is a dynamic application. When making edits to certain elements, the visual editor gives a warning:
"The number of elements selected changed after the page was initially loaded. Make sure that your changes appear as expected using preview mode." I've read all the official Google documentation on this specific warning. See the layout here
I've enabled activation events, set it to optimize.activate and made sure it is being pushed to dataLayer.
When I preview in debug mode, it says the experience was applied, the activation event was triggered on 'optimize.activate' and the url matches. Yet only one of the changes have been applied. See here
When I open the console and call dataLayer, optimize.activate is right there.
I'm honestly baffled. I read here that filters on the Analytics view linked to your Optimize container can stop events 'showing up'. We use filters to IP block our staff from showing up in our Analytics data.
Any help on this would be amazing.
p.s. I'm not a developer so go easy on me :)
Ok this maybe for a couple of reasons... I've had a few instances where I can view changes in preview mode:
First of all, if you're viewing changes in incognito mode, you need to make sure the following option is switched off in your browser - Block third-party cookies. If this is switched on, then in preview mode, your browser will block the Optimize 360 cookie and your experiment will not run. (This means you will not see your changes).
Secondly, if you have Audience Targeting set, these features do not work or show in preview mode.
Thirdly, your test may not be firing on the correct event trigger. EG pageload. So make sure the correct event is attached to your AB Test. As you will be able to see the changes in edit mode, but again not in preview mode.
Your issue is likely to be point 1 or 3.

I am trying to build a web app (to learn about WebSockets and adaptive behavior) that polls different social media sites and shows all the latest updates in one place. I want to make the page stop updating while out of focus, and then update again when in focus.
Testing the out of focus behavior has been very difficult, since I have to rely on logs to ensure that my app is working properly, and cannot have the window open in one monitor and work on the code in another monitor.
My question is:
Is there a way to "force" the tab to think that it is in or out of focus, like force element state in DevTools, but for the entire tab.
I am running Chrome on Windows 10. I could not find a way to do this using DevTools, and do not want to setup a whole testing framework just for such a simple thing.

Run the Emulate a focused page command.
If you create a Live Expression and set the expression to document.hasFocus() you'll see that the page always thinks it's in focus after you run the Emulate a focused page command.
When a site gets stuck in chrome with the 'loading www.site.com' status, Is there anyway to know which of the elements on the DOM is delaying the load? for example, it can be an external js file or image that is taking long time to load. I tried using the network tab in the DeveloperTools, but it only shows the elements already loaded and the time they took. I couldn't find a way to see which element is stuck.
I found a way that I'm not sure it works in all cases, but it did for me. I used the Timeline tab (now shown in the Performance tab), it's one of the tabs in Chrome Dev Tools.
Open Chrome Developer tools (F12 or CMD + Alt + I in Mac) and click the Performance tab
Make sure you drag the grey timeline bar all the way to the right, you want to see the most recent section of events so you can find what's getting stuck:
Check just down below the records sidebar. If you don't see this like in the capture below, try toggling the icons, there are different view modes. Now, going all the way down I found these. It doesn't look like that's going well. Obviously some kind of infinite loop in some random code:
I couldn't find out if it was an extension itself or some other bit of code. Clicking through I only could find // Copyright 2014 The Chromium Authors. All rights reserved..
Checking in Incognito mode clear of extensions, the website loads just fine.
I'd also advise to check the Console tab to see if there are were any errors that might cause the infinite loading thing. You'll often find clues there.
I am referring to the save feature in the 'Sources' panel of the Chrome Dev Tools. I have been using this feature for a long time in the stable release of Chrome, but after installing the build from the developer channel, I notice that once I have saved the file the first time, Chrome no longer prompts me to save and just does it automatically after every change I make.
This is quite a pain, as I make a lot of changes experimentally in the dev tools whilst debugging which I don't wish to save, I would like Chrome to save the file only when I explicitly tell it to.
Does anyone know if there is a way to disable this automatic CSS saving?
(Apologies for no screenshot, my PrtScn key seemingly won't operate when I am in a context menu)

I have reverted to the current stable build, 27.0.1453.93, and the behaviour appears to be the same.
I am having the same problem, I can only offer workarounds: use another browser, such as Firefox, for doing tests!
Alternatively you could launch another instance of Chrome with a different profile. You could also launch a Chrome "Incognito Window", it seems to not apply the filesystem mappings.
I normally use an Incognito Window or inline styles to test changes.
Alas, I learned after reading a post by Google's dev relations person
that the automatic save cannot be disabled and it seems that's the way
it's going to stay.

While not solving the issue directly, it is a decent work around:
In Chrome, in the css inspector you can click and hold the + button, then choose to add your changes to the inspector-stylesheet. It's not as convenient as directly editing in your css-selectors, but what you write will all be in inspector-stylesheet.css, so not saved to your project. Then when you are happy with your changes, you can manually put them in to your css.
I've been working on a new website and practicing my JS/jQuery/AJaxy skills. Last night I wanted to take a look at how long the page was taking to render and see if there were any areas I could clean up to increase speed. While the page loads in about 200 - 300 ms every time, I'm seeing a large amount of blank space between resource loads under the network inspector.

Has anyone else seen this or know what I can do to minimize that time (talking about the blank space between like the html and the first css file)?
Quite possibly it is caused by the extensions you have installed. AdBlock, LastPass and Google quick scroll took altogether about 200 ms on my machine.
Unfortunately, these extensions are invoked on every site and block loading the additional resources.
Try it with out of the box browser setup, the loading time will increase tremendously.
You've got a bunch of images loaded just after the page has been loaded (the load and DOMContentLoaded events have fired - the blue and red vertical lines across the Timeline). I can see that the images are loaded by the JQuery library (the Initiator column), perhaps to build a gallery or something.
So, the case is that JQuery loads the images after the page load, presumably in the onload handler (this can look like $(document).ready(handler) in your code, but other options are possible, too).
The delay between the initial page load and requesting the first resources is almost certainly caused by Chrome extensions. To find the culprit: Record a timeline in the Timeline tab in Chrome Developer Tools; Identify the scripts that are running during the Parse HTML phase; Work out which extensions they're from.
To record a timeline:
Open the timeline tab and click record.
Reload the page and then stop the recording. (A couple of seconds should be enough.)
To find the culprit:
Find the first main Parse HTML block on the timeline. On the row below you will probably see one or more Evaluate Script blocks. These are the culprits.
Click on one of the Evaluate Script blocks and find the script name in the bottom pane. Mouse-over the script name. The tooltip will have the URL of the script, which should be of the form chrome-extension://{long_identifier}/{path}
Memorise the first few letters of the identifier and search for it in the chrome://extensions/ page. This tells you which extension is causing the problem. Try disabling it - you should see a difference.
Repeat for the other Evaluate Script blocks.
In my case, I have 20 extensions installed but only two were causing a delay: LastPass and Fauxbar. I've chosen to leave them enabled because for me the productivity benefit of these extensions outweighs the downside of the added latency.
I'm looking to build a chrome extension that allows the user to have an independent subwindow that is the same in each tab (for example you are taking notes and the notes are synchronized among each tab). Also, clicking a link should not destroy this subwindow.
One solution is to inject an iframe in each tab, and try to synchronize this data serverside and send back to each client tab, as it is updated.
This seems very tedious, plus the iframe would be provided by a third party, and I want to make it the easiest for them.
Is there a way I can have a shared dom piece and display it in its current state across several tabs?
There's an API (still experimental as of Chrome 17) that does more or less exactly what you want. If you visit about:flags, and enable "Panels" (they're enabled by default in Dev and on Canary (and on ChromeOS)), you'll be able to use chrome.windows.create with a type of panel to create a floating pane that exists independently from the browser window. That would likely meet your need.
Take a look at the Google Talk extension for an example of how it might work.
