I have a problem with data table header alignment. All things will go fine until I did not use ScrollY.
On the page, I have a side navbar, that can be expanded. Now When I expand the side navbar and move the content area toward the right side, the table header goes out of the page.
1. Table:
<table class="flex-fill flex-grow-1 table table-striped table-hover table-bordered " id="data_table" style="background:red ;width: 100%">
<thead>
<tr>
<th>Header-1</th>
<th>Header-2</th>
<th>Header-3</th>
<th>Header-4</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>1</td>
<td>2</td>
<td>3</td>
<td>4</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
2. Script.
$(document).ready( function () {
$('#data_table').DataTable( {
paging: true,
ordering:false,
scrollY:315,
scrollCollapse:true,
scrollX:true
});
});

Are you using css bootstrap?
Please try to use the following script
Html
<div class="table-responsive">
<table class="flex-fill flex-grow-1 table table-striped table-hover table-bordered" id="data_table" style="background:red ;width: 100%">
<thead>
<tr>
<th>Header-1</th>
<th>Header-2</th>
<th>Header-3</th>
<th>Header-4</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>1</td>
<td>2</td>
<td>3</td>
<td>4</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</div>
Javascript
Add the script below after datatable initiation
table.columns.adjust().draw();
And the script will be like this
$(document).ready(function () {
var table = $("#data_table").DataTable({
paging: true,
ordering: false,
scrollY: 315,
scrollCollapse: true,
scrollX: true
});
table.columns.adjust().draw();
});

Firstly, here is my UI:
My output to my right displayed as a result of using the tag <tbody> inside my ajax:
success: function (response){
var tbody="";
$.each(response.all_categories, function (key, cat) {
tbody+=`
<tr>
<td class="p-0 btn-category-list-col">
<button id="submit" type="submit" class="btn float-left" data-toggle="modal" data-target="#createCategory">${cat.category_name}</button>
</td>
</tr>`; });
$('tbody').html(tbody) }
My problem is that I am using two <tbody> in this same page, so the table to the right shows up in the left:
Is there some way to make my ajax function read a class or an id instead of the tag itself?:
So kind of like my line tbody+= becomes: tbody(class/id)+=
Here is my table that uses two tbody tags:
<div class="col-md-2 border">
<table id="categoryList" class="table">
<thead>
<tr>
<th class="thead-category-list">Category List</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody></tbody>
</table>
</div>
<div class="col-md-10 border bbr-table-col">
<div id="success_message"></div>
<table id="categoryList" class="table table-striped table-bordered responsive no-wrap" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
<thead>
<tr class="bbr-table text-light">
<th>Group Name</th>
<th>Group Type</th>
<th>Group Users</th>
<th>Status</th>
<th>Active</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody></tbody>
</table>
</div>
any help would be appreciated thanks
If you didn't use the same IDs for both tables(which is invalid html by the way) you could have used the table id to select the correct one.
From the html above you could use the table class to identify it
$('table.table-striped tbody').html(tbody);
or you could fix the invalid duplicate ids and use the id to select the correct table
<div class="col-md-2 border">
<table id="side-categoryList" class="table">
<thead>
<tr>
<th class="thead-category-list">Category List</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody></tbody>
</table>
</div>
<div class="col-md-10 border bbr-table-col">
<div id="success_message"></div>
<table id="main-categoryList" class="table table-striped table-bordered responsive no-wrap" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
<thead>
<tr class="bbr-table text-light">
<th>Group Name</th>
<th>Group Type</th>
<th>Group Users</th>
<th>Status</th>
<th>Active</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody></tbody>
</table>
</div>
$('#main-categoryList tbody').html(tbody);
table.parent td:nth-of-type(1):not(table.nested td){
color: red;
}
<table class="table parent">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>TEXTA</td>
<td>TEXTB</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Has nested table below
<table class="table nested">
<tbody>
<thead>
<th>S.No.</th>
<th>Name</th>
<th>Contact</th>
</thead>
<tr>
<td>1</td>
<td>ABC</td>
<td>PQR</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>TEXTC</td>
<td>TEXTD</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
I have a nested table as follows -
<table class="table parent">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>TEXTA</td>
<td>TEXTB</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Has nested table below
<table class="table nested">
<tbody>
<thead>
<th>S.No.</th>
<th>Name</th>
<th>Contact</th>
</thead>
<tr>
<td>1</td>
<td>ABC</td>
<td>PQR</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>TEXTC</td>
<td>TEXTD</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
Requirement - Only TEXTA and TEXTB should be colored in red. In real scenario there are many rows. I want only the first td of each row in the parent table to be colored. I am doing something like -
table.parent td:nth-of-type(1):not(table.nested td){
color: red;
}
This is not giving me any result. What is the correct way of achieving this?
Spent a while playing around with this. The best I can do is to suggest using 2 lines of CSS rather than 1. One selector to do all of the first row of td and one to set the nested ones back to how they belong.
table.parent tr:first-child td {
color: red;
}
table.nested tr:first-child td {
color: black;
}
<table class="table parent">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>TEXTA</td>
<td>TEXTB</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Has nested table below
<table class="table nested">
<tbody>
<thead>
<th>S.No.</th>
<th>Name</th>
<th>Contact</th>
</thead>
<tr>
<td>1</td>
<td>ABC</td>
<td>PQR</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>TEXTC</td>
<td>TEXTD</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
You said that..
I want only the first td of each row in the parent table to be colored
So, I am assuming you want TEXTA and TEXTC to be colored (and not TEXTB as you stated).
If thats the case, then your idea was to select elements (first td of each row) if they dont contain a specific child element (table.nested).
This is not possible with CSS2 or CSS3.
The CSS2 and CSS3 selector specifications do not allow for any sort of parent selection.
See CSS selector - element with a given child
Edit
You can use jquery/javascript to do so.
For example, to add opacity and color css properties:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('table.parent > tbody > tr > td:first-child').each(function(){
if ($(this).has('table.nested').length == 0){
$(this).css('opacity', '0.5');
$(this).css('color', 'red');
}
});
});
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<table class="table parent">
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>TEXTA</td>
<td>TEXTB</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Has nested table below
<table class="table nested">
<thead>
<th>S.No.</th>
<th>Name</th>
<th>Contact</th>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>1</td>
<td>ABC</td>
<td>PQR</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>TEXTC</td>
<td>TEXTD</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
Just give some class to TEXTA & TEXTB
for example:
(html)
<td class="red-color-text">TEXTA</td>
<td class="red-color-text">TEXTB</td>
(css)
.red-color-text{color: red;}
I'm displaying a table from my database to my view.
#model IEnumerable<test1.Models.Malfunction>
#{
ViewBag.Title = "Malfunctions";
}
<h2>Malfunctions</h2>
<table id="customers" class="table table-bordered table-hover">
<thead>
<tr>
<th>ID</th>
<th>Description</th>
<th>Date Reported</th>
<th>Customer</th>
<th>Movie</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
#foreach (var malfunction in Model)
{
<tr>
<td>#malfunction.Id</td>
<td>#malfunction.ReportDescription</td>
<td>#malfunction.DateReported</td>
<td>#malfunction.Customer</td>
<td>#malfunction.Movie</td>
</tr>
}
</tbody>
</table>
This property:
<td>#malfunction.ReportDescription</td>
can contain a big amount of text which if too long will overlap the next property in line which is:
<td>#malfunction.DateReported</td>
What I want to do is break the line after the width of the cell is reached so it doesn't overlap with the text in DateReported.
Add:
td {
word-break: break-all;
}

I am using bootstrap's table-responsive to create a simple responsive table for my layout. However this class only works on mobile. Is there a way I can make it work on tablet as well?
<div class="histlog col-md-12">
<div class="table-responsive">
<table class="table table-striped">
<thead>
<tr>
<th class="hist1">One</th>
<th class="hist2">Two</th>
<th class="hist3">Three</th>
<th class="hist4">Four</th>
<th class="hist5">Five</th>
<th class="hist6">Siz</th>
<th class="hist7">Seven</th>
<th> </th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>1</td>
<td>2</td>
<td>3</td>
<td>4</td>
<td>5</td>
<td>6</td>
<td>7</td>
<td>8</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</div>
Here is the code. it is just a simple table layout.
And this is how it looks on mobile, my cells got smaller. Even when i adjusted the widths on my css, it wont respond to it.
You may want to consider using the !important rule in your CSS for your widths if you want to force the table to maintain the columns displayed as you anticipate.
Or you can use white-space: nowrap; like the example below to force the columns to not insert break lines that otherwise would happen first before your table starts behaving in a responsive manner. In other words, you are forcing the table to become responsive before trying to move text to a second line.
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.6/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<style>
td {
white-space: nowrap;
}
</style>
<div class="histlog col-md-12">
<div class="table-responsive">
<table class="table table-striped">
<thead>
<tr>
<th class="hist1">One</th>
<th class="hist2">Two</th>
<th class="hist3">Three</th>
<th class="hist4">Four</th>
<th class="hist5">Five</th>
<th class="hist6">Siz</th>
<th class="hist7">Seven</th>
<th> </th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>1asdfasdf</td>
<td>2asdfasdfasdf</td>
<td>3asdfasdfasdf</td>
<td>4asdfasd</td>
<td>5asdfasddf asdf as</td>
<td>6wer wer we </td>
<td>7asdf asdfwe </td>
<td>8sdfds f sd</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</div>

$(document).ready(function () {
$(".items").tablesorter();
$('.items tr:even').addClass('ItemEvenRow');
$('.items tr').hover(function () {
$(this).addClass("ItemRowHover");
}, function () {
$(this).removeClass("ItemRowHover");
});
});
HTML :
<table class="items">
<thead>
<tr class="">
<th>Last Name</th>
<th>First Name</th>
<th>Email</th>
<th>Due</th>
<th>Web Site</th>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody>
<tr>
<td>Smith</td>
<td>John</td>
<td>jsmith#gmail.com</td>
<td>$50.00</td>
<td>http://www.jsmith.com</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td >Bach</td>
<td >Frank</td>
<td >fbach#yahoo.com</td>
<td >$50.00</td>
<td >http://www.frank.com</td>
</tr>
<tr >
<td >Doe</td>
<td >Jason</td>
<td>jdoe#hotmail.com</td>
<td >$100.00</td>
<td>http://www.jdoe.com</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Conway</td>
<td>Tim</td>
<td>tconway#earthlink.net</td>
<td>$50.00</td>
<td>http://www.timconway.com</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
The even rows do not possess the hover, but only the odd ones.
Require both, even, as well as, odd rows to change their background on mouse-over.
The headers should be as they are without any changes.
The hover isn't working on even rows because of css precedence. Make the selector more specific like this (add a tr in front; updated demo):
tr.ItemRowHover {background-color:#A00000; }
