position: sticky in style does not work as expected - html

I work on my project and put div style position: -webkit-sticky; but it doesn't work.
div.sticky {
position: -webkit-sticky;
position: sticky;
top: 0;
left:10px;
padding: 5px;
background-color: #cae8ca;
border: 2px solid #4CAF50;
}
<p>Try to <b>scroll</b> inside this frame to understand how sticky positioning works.</p>
<p>Note: IE/Edge 15 and earlier versions do not support sticky position.</p>
<div class="sticky">I am sticky!</div>
<div style="padding-bottom:2000px">
<p>In this example, the sticky element sticks to the top of the page (top: 0), when you reach its scroll position.</p>
<p>Scroll back up to remove the stickyness.</p>

Create a Sidebar HTML

How could I create a Side Bar in HTML. This side bar should be positioned to the left and should always remain on the screen. This side bar should not overlap any content on the page.
Is it possible to do this using the position property or a display property. I do not want to do this by setting the width of the sidebar, and then setting the main-content to 'left: 20px'.
Is it possible to use a position or display property to always keep the sidebar on the left side of the screen, without overlapping any other elements, and also keep the sidebar always showing on screen.
Try this:
.sidenav {
height: 100%;
width: 160px;
position: fixed;
z-index: 1;
top: 0;
left: 0;
background-color: #111;
overflow-x: hidden;
padding-top: 20px;
}
.sidenav a {
padding: 6px 8px 6px 16px;
text-decoration: none;
font-size: 25px;
color: #818181;
display: block;
}
.sidenav a:hover {
color: #f1f1f1;
}
.main {
margin-left: 160px; /* Same as the width of the sidenav */
font-size: 28px; /* Increased text to enable scrolling */
padding: 0px 10px;
}
#media screen and (max-height: 450px) {
.sidenav {padding-top: 15px;}
.sidenav a {font-size: 18px;}
}
<div class="sidenav">

Main Content Which Always Cover Above The Fold?

I want to make a webpage in which the desired content will always cover above the fold.
Here’s an example of a webpage of what I am looking for to achieve.
The opening screen always resizes itself and covers above the fold no matter what the screen size is.
I’m trying to find what this technique is called in web design, so I can search for it?
Are you looking for a sticky menu?
Please be a little more specific on what you are planning to develop.
window.onscroll = function() {myFunction()};
var navbar = document.getElementById("navbar");
var sticky = navbar.offsetTop;
function myFunction() {
if (window.pageYOffset >= sticky) {
navbar.classList.add("sticky")
} else {
navbar.classList.remove("sticky");
}

How to prevent scroll for side navbar?

The side navbar has its own scroll but instead, I would rather have one side scroll in the main body. When you scroll the main, it should also display the additional side navbar information as well.
Here is an example: https://jsfiddle.net/wzcya8b9/3/

I’d suggest using css grid or Flexbox.
You can read an in depth, example-giving article on it here.
https://alligator.io/css/css-grid-holy-grail-layout/
BASIC EXAMPLE
This could give you a 200px column and an expanding column which would fill the rest of the width of the page. The navbar would sit on the left and use the same scroll bar.
HTML
<div class=“wrapper”>
<div class=“sidebar”></div>
<div class=“main”></div>
</div>
CSS
.wrapper {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: 200px auto;
}
If you’d like the top of the navbar to stick to the top of the window, you could replace position:fixed with position:sticky.

Internal link in a sticky navbar doesn't link to the proper position unless navbar has already stacked

I'm writing a sticky navbar based navigation system in plain HTML and CSS. I have some internal links on the navbar, which take to the corresponding section of the page.
To prevent content jumping to the top of the page and being partially hidden by the navbar, I add a simple div on top of the content with proper height, and jump to that div.
I have created an example on Codepen: https://codepen.io/anon/pen/yqvwNX
Here is the code:
window.onscroll = function() {
myFunction()
};
var navbar = document.getElementById("navbar");
var sticky = navbar.offsetTop;
function myFunction() {
if (window.pageYOffset >= sticky) {
navbar.classList.add("sticky")
} else {
navbar.classList.remove("sticky");
}
}
body {
margin: 0;
font-size: 28px;
}
.header {
background-color: #f1f1f1;
padding: 30px;
text-align: center;
}
#navbar {
overflow: hidden;
background-color: #333;
}
#navbar a {
float: left;
display: block;
color: #f2f2f2;
text-align: center;
padding: 14px 16px;
text-decoration: none;
font-size: 17px;
}
#navbar a:hover {
background-color: #ddd;
color: black;
}
#navbar a.active {
background-color: #4CAF50;
color: white;
}
.content {
padding: 16px;
}
.sticky {
position: fixed;
top: 0;
width: 100%;
}
.sticky+.content {
padding-top: 60px;
}
<div class="header">
<h2>Scroll Down</h2>
<p>Scroll down to see the sticky effect.</p>
</div>
<div id="navbar">
<a class="active" href="javascript:void(0)">Home</a>
Goto h4
</div>
<div class="content">

The problem:
Case 1: You click on the navbar button to go to bold (h3 tag) paragraph before the navbar has docked.
Case 2: You click on the navbar button to go to bold (h3 tag) paragraph after the navbar has docked.
The final positions of the content on the page are different, even though just by a small amount. Can someone help me understand why is this happening? In this example, the distance is small, but in some cases it can be large enough as well.
I'm relatively new to CSS, so I'd like to know how can I go about fixing this issue.

Sticky navbar increases to 100% when using bootstrap container

I'm able to create a sticky navbar & use it inside a bootstrap container with limited success.
However, when you scroll down, the width of the navbar suddenly increases to 100%.
If I remove the bootstrap container, the problem doesn't occur.
I have a link to it on code pen here

The .container class should be not be used as a wrapper of everything but used inside the main elements.

Remove the .row & .col-sm and add a .container wrapper in the #navbar

CSS
Change the CSS to add the background to the .container:
#navbar {
overflow: hidden;
background-color: #333;
}
to
#navbar .container {
overflow: hidden;
background-color: #333;
}
You need to put navbar within container that has .container class and then wrap it with Bootstrap Affix or any other solution that will make nav sticky.
