Expand debugging output in chrome like in firefox - google-chrome

Short question.
I love Firefox Developer Edition but since Chrome has the higher market share I thought of using both or some day maybe even switch to Chrome. Thing is, I'm missing a critical feature in Chrome Devtools.
When I use console.log to debug something in Firefox I get this nice output which I can expand to see all the fancy stuff like childnodes, textContent, etc. as seen in the image below.
So the question is: Has Chrome something similar and if so, how to activate it?
Thanks a lot.

Capybara: Screenshots with chrome are randomly dark

in our ui testing with capybara we are using chrome and chrome headless, since PhantomJS is deprecated.
We compare Screenshots to see if the page is looking exactly how it should look like. That works pretty fine, but there is a randomness, how chrome takes the screenshot. Sometimes the screenshots are pretty dark, which makes the test fail at the end. Is this a bug or am I missing something here?
Thanks already!
The awesome solution is, to put a delay before the method for taking a screenshot. A delay of 1 second cares for a bright screenshot. I still can not explain why exactly this is necessary.

How to test website on other browsers and fix issues

I have just completed a new Shopify website and used mainly Mozilla Firefox to put this together. I have been told by the client that the site doesn't show up properly in Chrome and Safari but when I have checked this on my 13" laptop they both appear fine on there and I was just wondering if anyone can give me any tips on how I can ensure that the site is working on all common browsers without having any issues.
Would appreciate any tips as I know there are paid websites to do this but just wondering if there is anything else that I can do to get this fixed.
If you to the safari developers "dropdown" in the status bar the is an option called "User agent" (the second one) from there you can "change" the browser.
Disclaimer: never actually used this function.
I believe that the best way to handle this would be to download and install all browsers to test.
There is a free service from the Microsoft dev site that gives you screenshots from a couple of different browsers and versions. Here is the link -> https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/screenshots/
It's not as good as installing all browsers to fully test everything but it can give you a rough idea if there's something wrong with css or something like that.
Your issue might be related to different browser versions. Double check to make sure that you are on the same version to see if you can reproduce the issue.

iPad firebug lite or similar

I have read lots of blogs about how to get firebug lite to work on the iPad and from what i can gather it worked at some point but hasn't worked in awhile. I can't get it to work myself.
So my question is has anyone gotten firebug lite or something simliar to work on the iPad recently. With the iPad being so popular I find it amazing that there isn't a good solid developer tool out there for it yet. Especially because in my experience it doesn't render web pages as expected quite often and needs specific tweaking.
Just to stop some quick replies, I already know its a webkit browser and the issues that I have spotted only show up on the iphone and ipad, not in chrome or desktop safari. So i really would love a solution that is native to the ipad itself.
The suggestion below worked for me on an iPad3 running IOS6.
This technique is from http://www.jamesmacfie.com/2012/03/debug-your-html-css-on-the-ipadiphone/
Bookmark any site on iPad then edit the address. Paste in the following code:
javascript:(function(F,i,r,e,b,u,g,L,I,T,E.{if(F.getElementById(b))return;E=F[i+'NS']&&F.documentElement.namespaceURI;E=E?F[i+'NS'](E,'script'):F[i]('script');E[r]('id',b);E[r]('src',I+g+T);E[r](b,u);(F[e]('head')[0]||F[e]('body')[0]).appendChild(E);E=new%20Image;E[r]('src',I+L);})(document,'createElement','setAttribute','getElementsByTagName','FirebugLite','4','firebug-lite.js','releases/lite/latest/skin/xp/sprite.png','https://getfirebug.com/','#startOpened');
Try Remote Debugging with Chrome browser. However iOS 6 comes with built-in support for remote debugging - link.
I've installed this many times (and in the past month on the new iPad) and it has worked.

FYI: The directions might be a little outdated so don't give up. What you will be doing is creating a bookmark. Then you edit the link in the bookmark with the script on Martin's website. That also means Firebug Lite can be used on Internet Explorer...although I couldn't edit any elements after getting it up and running.
Good luck!

Why is Dev Tools bar empty?

I'm using Chrome-compatible SRWare Iron 5.0.381 on XP, and was checking out what Chrome has to offer to developers, EG inspecting the contents of the DOM of a currently-loaded web page.
But when I hit CtrlShiftI, the bar is totally empty:
Does someone why this is? Do I need an add-on? Are there other Chrome-compatible tools I should know about?
It appears you’ve found a bug in that fork of Chromium. The inspector works just fine with Google.fr in the latest Google Chrome and Chromium builds. Why don’t you use one of these browsers.
Usually the reason of that is some problem in DevTools JS code.
It is a chance that problem will be solved by chrome restart.
Such kind of problems can happen when chrome is upgrading at background.
The other reason of that can be some changes which you made in DevTools.js.
Of cause if you have done some changes :)
You can troubleshoot such problem by another instance of DevTools.
As example you can try to load DevTools.html page into Safari, open WebInspector for it and check console messages.

Internet Explorer 8 doesn't finish downloading the page!

I'm currently finishing up testing a new Ruby on Rails app. Just recently, some of the pages do not seem to finish downloading in IE8. In FireFox, Chrome and Safari, everything works perfectly. The pages all validate successfully using the W3C validator.
When I view the page source in IE8, the page has been chopped off around 75% of the size it should be. IE8 claims the page is finished loading, and doesn't give any errors, but of course the page isn't rendering properly.
Has anyone seen this before? I'd really appreciate any help.
Have you tried to watch the http requests, using something like Http Analyzer or HttpWatch (like firebug for IE)? That might shed some light if there is a problem with a JS or CSS file not being found, or if the server is returning something other than a 200.
HttpWatch has a free version at http://www.httpwatch.com/download
IE8 Comes with a built in developer toolbar. Just press F12.
You should be able to diagnose most problems using it.
Also, open the page in Firefox with the Webdeveloper Toolbar addon and check if any javascript issues are arising. I find that sometimes you may only see the error in IE8 but you might only figure out what is wrong using Firefox. Give it a try!
There was a javascript call in the page that needed to be wrapped with:
document.observe("dom:loaded", function() { ... };
in order to work in IE. Apparently, it was disruptive enough to kill the entire page render. Thanks BenTheDesigner!
Since this is the first result on a Google search for IE8 not completing a page request, I thought I'd add on that I've seen the same symptoms caused by Sophos Anti Virus' Browser Helper Object which interferes with page requests and thus doesn't complete download requests every time.
Hitting F5 resolves the issue most of the time but a click to the next page can cause it to reappear. Other symptoms include odd page rendering of background images, incorrect repeating or no repeating being done at all despite a CSS declaration specifically telling a background to repeat. I spent a week debugging my CSS and XHTML only to eventually try disabling all the browser "Add-ons" and all of a sudden the issue went away.
I nailed it down to Sophos' BHO and now no rendering issues.
