You've tagged this .htaccess, which is a configuration file format for Apache HTTPD, but you aren't using Apache HTTPD or any other HTTP server.
You are just reading a local directory with your web browser.
Web browsers do not have features to load an index.html instead of showing a directory listing when you point them at a directory.
Use an HTTP server.

Is it possible to automatically load index.html on a system folder without using XAMPP, IIS or similar?
It is for a school project and I can't use them, so I have to open the file putting the path (C:/...) into the address bar.

This can get a little tricky... but is possible without any "administrator" privileges, nor without installing anything.
Download Python 3.8.2 - Windows x86-64 embeddable zip file
Create a folder on "python" on the c:\
Extract the "Zip" file into this folder
Change the folder name from "python-3.8.2-embed-amd64" to "python_src"
Create a folder named "python_html"
The folder structure should look like:
c:\python\
c:\python\python_src\
c:\python\python_html\
Create a file named "webserver.py" in the "c:\python\python_html" folder
Place the following code into that file:

Save and close the file

Open the "Command Prompt" and type the following commands
cd\
cd python\python_html\

Open a web browser and navigate to "http://localhost/"
Once you have confirmed this works, you can build an entire website within that "python_html" folder. As long as you don't close the command prompt it will continue acting as a "Web Server".
I know I could use .htaccess
.htaccess is an Apache (Web Server) config file, so unless you have Apache installed (ie. the "A" in XAMPP) then you can't use that. (If .htaccess was available then index.html would likely load automatically anyway.)
On Apache, being able to load index.html by default when requesting a directory requires mod_dir (an Apache module). In this case, mod_dir issues an internal subrequest for the DirectoryIndex - this all requires additional processes.

If you can't install anything then you can't do this I'm afraid. You appear to be limited to direct file requests.
When using a webserver (such as Apache or IIS) then you have a differentiation between a URL and a filesystem path. The webserver maps the URL to a filesystem path. Without a webserver you don't have that abstraction.
There are lighter webservers, other than Apache and IIS, but you need to install something extra.
Just give your file(s) meaningful names (ie. not index.html) and use those instead? eg. fox-project.html
I just started setting up Apache web server to try and test a website I am building. After installing LAMP (I'm on Ubuntu 16.04, if that's important), I copied a folder of HTML and CSS code that I had to test. Here is the folder's contents:
Main folder: testsite
Subfolders: articles, images, CSS, HTML, scripts
Contents:
articles -> .docx files
images -> .png files
CSS -> .css files
HTML -> .html files
scripts -> .py files, but one .html file too
When I went to test the Apache web server, it gave a 404 not found. I'm absolutely clueless as to what could be the answer. I tried renaming the maincode.html file that I had to index.html and putting it in the testsite folder, but it didn't change anything. Is there anything I need to do to fix this?

Make sure your testsite's conf file has the DocumentRoot property set to the path to your testsite folder. The conf file is probably /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default.conf.

Clients can only request known file URLs via HTTP.
The server can be configured to spit out an HTML file list as default page for the directory and you can process that on the client side.
I have an OpenShift server running python. However when I call php via SSL the php interpreter starts running. It suggests that there might be a way to run php as well. However, HTML if fair enough for me. Now, I do not know how to be able to reach html files on my server as when I am trying I always get 404 not found. I've read about a solution of placing a .htaccess file:

I am not exactly sure where to place this file but placing in the folder of the .html file still not helps.

Put the .html file in your app-root/repo/wsgi/static folder (or in that folder in your git repository). if you want it to be displayed like app-domain.rhcloud.com/file.html, you will have to use a .htaccess file in your wsgi folder that rewrites file.html to static/file.html
I have installed XAMPP , there is a htdocs folder and inside it index.html file ,
when I try to open it in my browser through http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/index.html it says

instead of
http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/index.html
try just
http://localhost/index.html
or if index.html is saved in a folder in htdocs then
http://localhost/<folder-name>/index.html
htdocs is your default document-root directory, so you have to use localhost/index.html to see that html file. In other words, localhost is mapped to xampp/htdocs, so index.html is at localhost itself. You can change the location of document root by modifying httpd.conf and restarting the server.
Start your XAMPP server by using:
{XAMPP}\xampp-control.exe
{XAMPP}\apache_start.bat
Then you have to use the URI http://localhost/index.html because htdocs is the document root of the Apache server.
If you're getting redirected to http://localhost/xampp/*, then index.php located in the htdocs folder is the problem because index.php files have a higher priority than index.html files.
You could temporarily rename index.php.
You need to start your Apache Server normally you should have an xampp icon in the info-section from the taskbar, with this tool you can start the apache server as wel as the mysql database (if you need it)
All created by user files saved in C:\xampp\htdocs directory by default,
so no need to type the default path in a browser window, just type
http://localhost/yourfilename.php or http://localhost/yourfoldername/yourfilename.php this will show you the content of your new page.
You should simply create your own folder in htdocs and save your .html and .php files in it. An example is create a folder called myNewFolder directly in htdocs. Don't put it in index.html. Then save all your.html and .php files in it like this-> "localhost/myNewFolder/myFilename.html" or "localhost/myNewFolder/myFilename.php"
