Sending email with file attachment using Google Cloud Function and Pub/Sub - google-cloud-functions

I have a Pub/Sub topic where I publish messages and that pubsub topic is subscribed by a Google Cloud Function which sends the email to the customer using mailgun API.
This works fine so far, now I got the requirement that I have to send the email with the file attachment.
I can easily do this using Google Cloud Function using HTTP trigger but how to do it using a Pub/Sub topic?
Check the given image.
Note: The file size could be more than 10mb in my case.

First of all if I understand your goal correctly, PubSub alone will never be enough as the actual work will happen at the function.
To achieve the above you need a cloud function with Pub/Sub trigger.
Once the function is called, you need to either fetch the attachment from a Google Cloud Bucket, or download it from a another API/source you have. You'll have to download it inside the /tmp directory which is used to store temporary files.
Once completed, then you can use mailgun or other tools of your choice. Remember the attachment is inside the /tmp directory and not ./
Using mailgun or any other method does not change anything on the overall approach. For example if you were to use Gmail API, you'd add this to your cloud function for the final step.

Use single Google OAuth client across GAS library consumers

Every new copy of my Google Apps Script counts as a different client to Google Cloud, even though my code is in a library they each are sharing. I'd therefore like to specify my own oauth client created within the Google Cloud project, using its consent screen similar to before.
I know how to create said client, but I don't know how to get the consumers of my library (the scripts that call it and their containers) to all use the same client.
How would I accomplish this?
Edit:
Scenario: Script A is a library that needs to oauth authenticate. Script B is a consumer of that library attached to a spreadsheet C. Copies of that Spreadsheet C are counting as new clients. I would like them to use the same oauth client id.

Securely calling a Google Cloud Function via a Google Apps Script

How can I securely call a Google Cloud Function via a Google Apps Script?
✅ I have a Google Cloud Function, which I can access at https://MY_REGION-MY_PROJECT.cloudfunctions.net/MY_FUNCTION, and which I would like to allow certain users to invoke via an Apps Script.
✅ To secure the Cloud Function, I have set Cloud Function Invoker to only include known email (e.g. USER#COMPANY.com, where this is a valid Google email).
✅ I am able to successfully invoke the Cloud Function via curl, while logged into gcloud with this email, by running: curl https://MY_REGION-MY_PROJECT.cloudfunctions.net/MY_FUNCTION -H "Authorization: Bearer $(gcloud auth print-identity-token)".
✅ I have granted the following oauthScopes in my Apps Script's manifest:
"https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.external_request"
"https://www.googleapis.com/auth/userinfo.email"
"https://www.googleapis.com/auth/cloud-platform"
⛔️ However, when I attempt to invoke the Cloud Function via a Google Apps Script, while logged in with the email USER#COMPANY.com, I am unable to invoke it and instead returned a 401. Here is how I have attempted to invoke the Cloud Function:
const token = ScriptApp.getIdentityToken();
const options = {
headers: {'Authorization': 'Bearer ' + token}
}
UrlFetchApp.fetch("https://MY_REGION-MY_PROJECT.cloudfunctions.net/MY_FUNCTION", options);
ℹ️ I have also tried the following:
Using ScriptApp.getOAuthToken()
Adding additional oauthScopes, e.g. openid.
Creating an OAuth Client ID with https://script.google.com set as an Authorized Javascript origin.
Deploying the Apps Script.
Crying out to the sky in utter, abject despair
I struggled very much authenticating from Apps Script to invoke a Cloud Run application and just figured it out, and I believe it's similar for calling any Google Cloud application including Cloud Functions. Essentially the goal is to invoke an HTTP method protected by Google Cloud IAM using the authentication information you already have running Apps Script as the user.
The missing step I believe is that the technique you're using will only work if the Apps Script script and Google Cloud Function (or Run container in my case) are in the same GCP project. (See how to associate the script with the GCP project.)
Setting it up this way is much simpler than otherwise: when you associate the script with a GCP project, this automatically creates an OAuth Client ID configuration to the project, and Apps Script's getIdentityToken function returns an identity token that is only valid for that client ID (it's coded into the aud field field of the token). If you wanted an identity token that works for another project, you'd need to get one another way.
If you are able to put the script and GCP function or app in the same GCP project, you'll also have to do these things, many of which you already did:
Successfully test authentication of your cloud function via curl https://MY_REGION-MY_PROJECT.cloudfunctions.net/MY_FUNCTION -H "Authorization: Bearer $(gcloud auth print-identity-token)" (as instructed here). If this fails then you have a different problem than is asked in this Stack Overflow question, so I'm omitting troubleshooting steps for this.
Ensure you are actually who the script is running as. You cannot get an identity token from custom function in a spreadsheet as they run anonymously. In other cases, the Apps Script code may be running as someone else, such as certain triggers.
Redeploy the Cloud Function as mentioned here (or similarly redeploy the Cloud Run container as mentioned here) so the app will pick up any new Client ID configuration. This is required after any new Client ID is created, including the one created automatically by adding or re-adding the script to the GCP project. (If you move the script to another GCP project and then move it back again, it seems to create another Client ID rather than reuse the old one and the old one will stop working.)
Add the "openid" scope (and all other needed scopes, such as https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.external_request) explicitly in the manifest. getIdentityToken() will return null without the openid scope which can cause this error. Note to readers: read this bullet point carefully - the scope name is literally just "openid" - it's not a URL like the other scopes.
"oauthScopes": ["openid", "https://...", ...]
Use getIdentityToken() and do NOT use getOAuthToken(). According to what I've read, getOAuthToken() returns an access token rather than an identity token. Access tokens do not prove your identity; rather they just give prove authorization to access some resources.
If you are not able to add the script to the same project as the GCP application, I don't know what to do as I've never successfully tried it. Generally you're tasked with obtaining an OAuth identity token tied to one of your GCP client ids. I don't think one app (or GCP project) is supposed to be able to obtain an identity token for a different OAuth app (different GCP project). Anyway, it may still be possible. Google discusses OAuth authentication at a high level in their OpenID Connect docs. Perhaps an HTML service to do a regular Google sign-in flow with a web client, would work for user-present operations if you get the user to click the redirect link as Apps Script doesn't allow browser redirects. If you just need to protect your service from the public, perhaps you could try other authentication options that involve service accounts. (I haven't tried this either.) If the service just needs to know who the user is, perhaps you could parse the identity token and send the identifier of the user as part of the request. If the service needs to access their Google resources, then maybe you could have the user sign in to that app separately and use OAuth generally for long term access to their resources, using it as needed when called by Apps Script.
The answer above is very good. But since I am new with this I still had to spend a lot of time trying to figure it out.
This worked for me:
Apps Script code:
async function callCloudFunction() {
const token = ScriptApp.getIdentityToken();
const options = {
headers: {'Authorization': 'Bearer ' + token}
}
const data = JSON.parse(await UrlFetchApp.fetch("https://MY_REGION-MY_PROJECT.cloudfunctions.net/MY_FUNCTION", options).getContentText())
return data
}
Make sure that in project config you have the same project where your function is created.
After that, you can add the emails of the users you want to access the script on the Permission section in the function.
And as #alexander-taylor mentioned as well, make sure to add the scopes to your manifest file. You can make the manifest visible from the configuration tab in apps script. It took me some time to get that too.
Thanks to your comment you can do 2 things. But before, you have to know that you can't (or I least I never achieve this), create a valid identity token for being authenticated by Cloud Function and Cloud Run with a user credential. I opened a question on this
But you can call Google Cloud API with user credential! So
You can use the function test call API. The quotas limit you to 16 calls per 100 minutes (of course, it's design for test!)
You can publish a message into PubSub and plug your function on it. In this pattern your call is asynchronous.

How can I create spreadsheet with included gs script by API?

I'd like to manage spreadsheets (uploaded by a client via API) over google engine. I created test spreadsheet extended by functions in .gs script (which works great if I add them via online editor) but I do not know how to apply such a .gs script to every uploaded spreadsheet automatically (possibly via API).
Moreover, I do not want to share this .gs file by publishing it as an extension (because of security policies).
Updated: I also tried copying existing spreadsheet with working gs script and overwriting its spreadsheet data via API (instead of uploading new one) - it's overwritten data successfully but unfortunately lost gs script. Details are described in separate (bounty) question: Custom google app script doesn't work after copying spreadsheet with google java client
So I've even tried copying using plain HTTP methods since I thought it might be a problem with Java SDK but it still didn't work which means that there is some problem at google side (or something is really unclear) with service accounts.
After all I solved the problem with another approach.
First I copy spreadsheet with script attached to it to my service account (as I described in this Custom google app script doesn't work after copying spreadsheet with google java client topic). The file is copied with broken script.
Then I make user authorize using google's oauth (this tutorial shows how https://developers.google.com/identity/protocols/OAuth2WebServer#overview)
And then on his behalf I perform copying.
Finally the file is on his private drive which is the biggest downside of this solution but at least the script works which was my main goal.
Hope it helps ;)
You can publish a google script without it going on the Marketplace. If you make a Google group you can publish in such a way that only members of your google group can see it. If your google group only has you, only you can see it. Then it will be on all of your spread sheets.
The downside being that google will never let you remove it from their server, only unpublish it.
You can create a stand-alone script that is independent of any spreadsheet. This script would contain any methods/functions needed to create and manipulate spreadsheets according to your use case. Furthermore you could deploy the script as a web-app and implement a doGet() or doPost() method. Whenever a user uploads spreadsheet data via API you can call the web app with the information and have it create spreadsheets as needed.

Is there a way to build an Google Apps Script application that uses BigQuery Service as a service account instead as a user?

What I trying to do here is an application that connects to bigquery, executes some query and writes a spreadsheet in current user's Google Drive.
I know that I can change the "Execute app as" option when deploying the app. But when I do this, and the user try to use the app, Google asks for permission to access the BigQuery.
I do not want to give permission to each user to access BigQuery.
We have about 50 ~ 100 users who will use (and this number can increase)
Some images:
When access the application's url: http://i.imgur.com/kGzJ3ps.png.
When the user clicks in the "continue" button:

Hope I've been clear.
You would probably need an App, that had people sign in with their Google account using oAuth2
Google Accounts Authentication and Authorization
I think that this link gives an overview of what your options are:
Permissions and Types of Scripts
I guess you would need to have an App, that ran as User at the keyboard, so that the spreadsheet saved to their Google Drive. If you wanted the user to be able to download a file to their computer drive, that's a little different.
Just use HTML Service. It's basically just building a website. You just don't have a domain name. But the spreadsheet you are distributing doesn't have a domain name.
HTML Service Google Documentation
From an Apps Script HTML Service, you can write to Spreadsheets, Documents, and run HTTP Requests (urlFetch).
URL Fetch Service
The permissions in the Apps Script App can be set to run the Apps Script file as yourself, with access to anyone, even anonymous. That way, the user will never be asked for permission for any files that you own. You will need to authorize it once, the first time any script that needs access to your files is run.
Because anyone could run your Apps Script App, you might want to have a log in system to authenticate users.
You would need to use the Big Query API with Apps Script urlFetch to access Big Query.
So, with the HTML Service, you can do most everything you could do with HTML, CSS, and Javascript on a regular website. You can create custom input forms, have different pages and display data in tables. Plus it's served over HTTPS.
One solution that you can use if you don't want all your users to enable BigQuery is to use a webapp deployed as a service running as "you" and that will respond to an urlFetch coming from each user through the script they run as "themselves".
This service will be deployed as any other webapp using a doGet main function and return its data using contentService
Yes, that is possible. Check out this answer here: Using Advanced Google Services with Service Account and also check this awesome library: https://github.com/googlesamples/apps-script-oauth2

Using Google Drive contents using Google Drive API without sending access tokens for each request

I am writing an application that can modify an spreadsheet in Google Drive, but the problem is that each time I try to access Drive contents it asks for access token as per the OAuth2 specification which I have to generate manually after browsing through the following link:
https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/auth?access_type=online&approval_prompt=auto&client_id=<THE_CLIENT_ID>&redirect_uri=urn:ietf:wg:oauth:2.0:oob&response_type=code&scope=https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive
Anybody having idea if its possible to either get this token through Drive API or through any other medium, The client application will be in the form of a Java Swing application in which there will be text fields the text inserted in those fields will be added as a row in the spreadsheet hosted on the Google Drive.
Thanks
You need to get the token manually the first time, but then you can reuse it. I guess this is a duplicate?
Stored Credential from google api to be reused java
must I click "Allow Acess" every time I connect? Google Drive SDK API
[EDIT] Sorry, I did not see the date.
