I have been trying to get an image saved on my computer and set it as a background image covering the whole page using CSS. Please help.
The html code is this:
<div class="page-container">
<h1>HI</h1>
</div>
The CSS code is this:
.page-container {background-image: url(css/images/huelvapiersunset.jpg);
height: 100%;
}
The files are organised like this:
imagetest/css/images
Thanks in advance!
In order that the image appear as background with the provided setting two main changes have to be made in styles.css.
1. The url in the background-image to become url('images/huelvapiersunset.jpg'). Here the quotes, ', were added add the css was removed since this file is already in the css folder.
2. The height to become equal to the height of the used image in pixels.
Below is the code of a working example.
.page-container {
background-image: url('images/huelvapiersunset.jpg');
height: 1167px;
}
And the appearing background image with text.

I am following a tutorial and trying to get a fixed image as the background to my webpage. In the tutorial the code the person entered works perfectly. However when I enter the exact same code the image does not appear. Any reason why?
HTML:
<div class="landing">
<div class="home-wrapper">
<div class="home-inner">
</div>
</div>
</div>
CSS:
.home-inner {
background-image: url("test.jpg");
}
I would suggest double checking to make sure path is correct. Also double check that your css file is properly tagged and double check that the file name is correct as well.
You need to specify height and width every time when you implement an image to your code. So, if you're image has resolution 200px x 200px, you want to implement it in this way:
CSS
.home-inner {
background-image: url("test.jpg");
width:200px;
height:200px;
}
I know it's repetitious question but I have problem with my code.
I have searched stackoverflow and w3schools for a background image setting
and wrote the code that was on both sites exactly but still I have problem with the following code.
body {
background-image: url("C:\Users\mehra\Desktop\Male-Fitness-Models-BAck.jpg");
}
or
body{ background-image: url("Male-Fitness-Models-BAck.jpg"); }
above are the codes I used for setting background, but neither of them work.
HTML picture
If the background image file location is correct you might need to add a height and width to the container of the background image.
body {
height: 500px;
width: 500px;
background-image: url("C:\Users\mehra\Desktop\Male-Fitness-Models-BAck.jpg");
}
There are a few things to investigate to ensure it always works:
1) Using the project absolute path:
ensure you have FollowSymLinks in your vhosts enabled, that way you can use / in the src to call the image.
e.g. <img src="/images/dog.png" />
2) Make sure the image exists
copy and paste the src that's displayed in the browser (inspect with firebug, or view-page source to get the link) into the url bar and see what it returns - if it's a 404 then it doesn't exist on the path you gave, if it's 403 the path might be set to really strict permissions (755 on directories and 644 for files is recommended) and you might have to tweak your vhosts file to allow people to view the content, but not access the file tree.
3) If the image does exist, there is no message (other than 200) and you're using the path correctly - then it's probably because the div is empty. A background on a div with no content will result in empty space, because the background is stretching itself over 0 pixels. Add a min-height and min-width rule to your css or use inside the div:
CSS:
div {
background: url('/images/dog.png');
min-height: 50px;
min-width: 50px;
}
HTML:
<div> </div>
4) Use a proper folder structure
by using a file tree that makes sense, it makes resources easier to manage.
Hosting every file in the DOCUMENT_ROOT is messy, I'd recommend the below structure:
|--index.html
|----images/
|----css/
|----js/
that's a basic structure, then you can add more folders based on area e.g.
|--index.html
|----[area]/
|----images/
|----css/
|----js/
body
{
background : cover;
background: url("http://quizdoo.com/wp-content/uploads/qc-images/58d2957b47354.jpg");
}
<body>
</body>
Add background size to make it visible
body
{
background: cover;
background-image: url("C:\Users\mehra\Desktop\Male-Fitness-Models-BAck.jpg");
}
If you are using a PC saved image path make sure to replace the \ with / and it will work.
example:
background-image:url("C:/Users/foldername/Desktop/images/City_Landscape_Background.jpg");
I have the following Squarespace website. You can login to the site by clicking visitor access and typing in the code.
I'd like to change the background of the website by using the followng background image:
https://hethuisvandelingerie.squarespace.com/assets/bgs/bg8.png
I tried to do this with a CSS code to add a background image to the div with ID "canvas". This is the code I used:
#canvas{background-image: url('assets/bgs/bg8.png');}
However, this code does not seem to add the background image?
Any of you have an idea on how to solve this issue?
Take a look on your main wrapped on your #canvas div. Try to use the same CSS code. Hope it helps!
main {
background: url(https://static1.squarespace.com/static/ta/58639728d2b857b308f66598/404/assets/bgs/bg8.png)
}
In site.css, look for this entry and remove the background line from #main. You've applied the background image to #canvas but #main is displaying over #canvas and #main's background is covering the background image applied to #canvas
#main {
background: #fcfcfc;
...
Try removing the single quotes from the path
#canvas{background-image: url(assets/bgs/bg8.png);}
If that doesn't work
Make sure that you entered the right path.
Double check that the id of the element is in fact canvas
(I personally think it's a less than optimal name since canvas is now also a class)
im really new to this but heres my problem. I need to upload a pic onto my website (im using aptana studios 3). So i save my image as jpeg and use the code:
now it acknowledges that I am uploading the picture but it won't load. Do i have to convert the image or save it a certain way?
Oh buddy, make sure to post the code you're having issues with. In any case, it doesn't really matter what file extension you use (though .png may be the best for web). I'm assuming this is hard-coded HTML, if that is the case, I would use a simple <img /> element to display a picture. Make sure the image is saved in a nearby directory.
<div>
<div class="item"><img src="./example.png"/></div>
</div>
In the example above, example.png is located in the same folder as my index.html file. We use the attribute src, not href. An href attribute dictates what page is to be loaded when an element, e.g. an <a> element, is clicked on. If you have a CSS stylesheet, it might be preferable to load the image as a background-image to a <div> element, so that it would be easier to manipulate image properties like height and width. An example of that would be:
<div>
<div class="item"/></div>
</div>
..and the CSS:
.item {
background-image: url("boxes.png");
width: 800px;
height: 600px;
background-size: contain;
}
Here, I set the image's height and width, and tell my styles that I want the whole image to be show with background-size: contain;.
I hope this helps.
I'm trying to display a local background-image in CSS. It's in the same folder as index.html and it's not displaying.
.image {
width:100px;
background-image: url('PIC1.jpg');
}
Any help is appreciated.
It is not appearing because you didn't give any height to the div see this http://jsfiddle.net/ce1j6k7k/2/ you can remove the height to see the difference
HTML
<div id="image"></div>
CSS
#image{
width:300px;
height:300px;
background-image:url('http://placekitten.com/300/301');
}
Resources specified in CSS are resolved relative to the path of the CSS file, not the page referencing the CSS file. PIC1.jpg must be located in the same directory/folder as the CSS file itself.
There is no way in CSS to do what you think it does - and that's a good thing, because I can't think of any possible use-case. Imagine having these pages all referencing style.css:
/index.html
/products/fish.html
/user/account/orderHistory
...if style.css referenced "foo.jpg" then foo.jpg would have to be replicated at /foo.jpg, /products/foo.jpg and /user/account/foo.jpg.
I can think of 3 possible problems.
First, the image path. for example if this is your image's real path:
D:\Projects\MyProject\Content\Images\PIC1.jpg
you should do this in your code:
background-image: url('~\Content\Images\PIC1.jpg');
Second, is that the width that you've set in the code doesn't match the image's coordinates. In that case, you can either change the code or re-size the image.
And finally, the image might not be loaded on the page and by refreshing it few times it might be shown.
