Dynamic Flex Item height in a flex grown flex-box container - html

So I am trying to build a kanban like layout (with Vue and Vuetify) that has lists that grow with their content but then stop growing the moment they reach the end of their container (the container would be the remaining size of the screen) and put in an overflow-y inside the column's div.
Here is the reproduction link: https://codesandbox.io/s/dear-god-in-heavens-o55oz
I have tried to make it look as similar to what I have in my own project at the moment.
Here's what you can see in the reproduced link:
The container inside src/components/common/ListsContainer.vue is a flex-grow flex item. I need this because I want this container to automatically take the remaining height of the screen because the wToolbar will have an extension slot that will change its height. I might also introduce new changes to it therefore it would be much more simpler if the container of the columns has a dynamic height.
The columns inside ListsContainer.vue stretch the parent container when the contents are too much, the only way I can control it is by adding a calc(100vh - XXrem) value to the container and the columns to control their height. You can see that I have commented out my calc values inside src/assets/css/custom.css in lines 19 and 24 to demonstarte the overflow of the columns from the screen.
The reason I dont want to use calc is because
calc doesnt react nicely inside an iPad and I have to introduce different calc values just to contain the columns, I have checked that different devices calculate the height differently (I checked in actual iPads since Chrome's simulator works flawlessly which isnt the case in the actual device)
When the wToolbar is extended, the calc doesnt respond and it pushes it down the page, I would like to keep the overflow-y disabled in this page.
So can you guys let me know how I can set my flex-box settings so that everything is contained the way I am trying to?

Cap element size to grid area when using align-item: start

I have a CSS grid with a scrollable element placed in one of the grid's areas.
What'd I'd like is for the item to shrink if the content is too small to fit the area. I did this by setting align-self to start.
This works great, until the content grows. The element resizes past the end of the grid area it's assigned to.
How can I use align-start but still cap the height to the height of the grid area? I would have expected this to be the default behavior.
One solution is to have the element stretch but then have a child element inside it that contains the actual content. The parent would have overflow: auto and the child would simply grow until it's too large for the container. Unfortunately, this kills the box-shadow.
I could put the box-shadow on the outer element in this case, but then it'll be too large when the content is small.
Any ideas what I can do here? I considered using some Javascript shinnanigans but I'm not even sure how I'd grab the height of the grid area from JS.
JSFiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/1kLenm5a/2/
Apparently max-height: 100% works. I could have sworn I tried that but I was messing with so many other settings at the same time I must have missed it.
Thanks.

CSS: How to control what happens when browser shrinks + Floats

I'm testing out some code for a random personal project and I'm looking to place 3 boxes side by side (I believe as divs). But as you'll see they're not really centered (as three)/spaced out so well. I figured assign them unique IDs and increase padding but is there a more efficient way?
Also when the screen shrinks, the third box dips underneath, while the second box is still on the same line I want it so all boxes drop at the same time.
Unfortunately, I need more reputation to post my code in the proper format it seems.
Not 100% sure if I get you correctly.
For "But as you'll see they're not really centered (as three)/spaced out so well. I figured assign them unique IDs and increase padding but is there a more efficient way?", if you wanna make them horizontally centered, you can try this:
wrap them in a container node.
assign a width to this container in its style.
set both margin-left and margin-right of this container to auto
This should then make these 3 boxes (actually the container) horizontally centered.
For "_Also when the screen shrinks, the third box dips underneath, while the second box is still on the same line I want it so all boxes drop at the same time. _", perhaps width: calc(100% / 3) is what you want to put in the styles of these boxes.
In modern web browsers, even if #Slash_D response is correct, you can get a more flexible alignment using flexbox (here you have a complete guide https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/a-guide-to-flexbox/).
Futhermore, if you want all the containers drop at the same time, you have to deal directly with media query based on resolutions (https://www.w3schools.com/css/css_rwd_mediaqueries.asp) , or use a grid system, like bootstrap, that helps you with media queries based on classess (https://v4-alpha.getbootstrap.com/layout/grid/#how-it-works)
Hope it helps

Form page fixed height and responsiveness

I have the following layout I need to solve
I understand that the whole idea of the responsive design is to leave the height to adjust to the content, but for this particular work the customer wants it this way no matter how I have to figure it out but I'm struggling hard to achieve it
In my mockup I have a 100% height and weight body, and then a container taking 85% height of the body size.
Inside that container there are the following elements:
A Top div container with the company logo
A Progress bar with a step number
A small div with some instructions for the current step
A Div containing the form elements that the user has to fill
A bottom div with 2 navigation buttons
The content should be always visible no matter the device used (see image below)
Number 4. has a inner scrollbar with overflow-y because that content will change
In order to do this i set heights in percentage (%) for each div within the container, however I need some padding for the elements, but when the browser resizes or the device changes height and width the elements overlap each other
I don't want to rely on a bunch of media queries to fix this. I wonder if anyone can find an approach or some reference for this since i can't seem to find it
Thanks
If you don't want to use many media queries, I think you should use Jquery (or Javascript) like this:
Fixed height of all div except FORM CONTENT (include padding, margin, border with box-sizing: border-box). You can use some media queries for best style.
Use Jquery to calculate height of FORM CONTENT (this is scrollable content)
Example:
$('#form-content').height($(window).height() - X);
// With X = total height of other divs includes margin, padding, border
Call this script in $(document).ready(...) and $(window).resize(...)
Hope this help.

CSS - Prevent table-cell from expanding container beyond max height

I am using a table based layout (using display: table properties). The container has a dynamic height (I have set min and max height properties on the container). All the inner elements within the container have their heights set to 100%. The idea being that they will always fill the available space.
The problem I am having is that elements that have display: table-cell will continue to expand above the 100% allocated space if they contain content that is taller than them. This happens even if I set overflow: auto.
I have created a jsfiddle to demonstrate the issue. Please see here:
http://jsfiddle.net/eSRA8/
In this example, the max-height of the container is 300px, but an inner element called .tall-content has a height of 400px. This makes the container grow taller than its max-height.
In Chrome this actually works how I want it to. However it does not work in Firefox or IE.
Please note that since the container height is dynamic, I can't set a fixed height on any of the inner elements (unless it is possible to use jQuery to assign the correct height on document load and on window resize, but this would need to respect the min and max height settings of the container).
Does anyone have any idea how I can achieve the desired result? I would like to keep as much of the existing structure as I can but if the same result can be achieved in a slightly different way then I'm open to that. Either way it needs to work the same in all browsers.
That looks to be a limitation of display:table;
You may be able to put the "container" in another div with max-height:300px;overflow:auto;
Here's some info which might explain why you are having difficulty:

WinJS: How to calculate width of listview items to fill parent container?

In this article, it is said that, "There's one thing that you must always do in your template, and that's set the size of your items." I want my items in a list view to fill the size of the parent container, however, how should I properly calculate this size to adjust to different screen resolutions?
