I know this sounds like it's been asked before but I've played around with a lot of techniques I've found from other questions and nothing seems to get the desired effect I need.
I'm trying to make something that will be responsive like this:

I basically need an image to be centered, where the image is at 100% size.
Here is what I tried to get this effect:
I first made a div containing three child divs for "columns". Then inside the center column I made three child divs for "rows". Now I need the image to fill the max width it's allowed while still maintain that square aspect ratio. As well the height of the image should determine the height of the top and bottom rows.
Then it should just be a matter of having the text inside the top and bottom row align to the bottom and top of their divs respectively.
This would look something like this:

The issue I'm running into is I can't seem to get the center image to determine the heights of the rows above and below it.
I've tried...
Flexbox

and a bit of using calc() but to no luck

Flexbox makes this kind of layout very straightforward. The trick is selectively allowing items to flex or shrink.
The flex property shorthand takes 3 values for flex-grow, flex-shrink, and flex-basis (the initial width or height depending on flex direction). Just keep clear which divs are serving as flex containers as you get into the details in the layout. It is very common to have divs that are both flex containers and flex items themselves too.
I also recommend using an img element instead of applying the image as a background so you dont have trouble with the aspect ratio in responsive window sizes.

I am trying to fill the remaining space of a containing flex box with the green div. I want the top flex row (blue) to only be the height of its contents and then the row below (green) to fill the rest. For some reason it just seems to split the flex rows evenly down the div. I have read a few questions on here already which all say to make sure the containing div has its height set to 100%. I have set the containing div height to 200px as this is my desired height, but I have also tried adding another container within this to 100% to no avail. I've also made sure to set the flex-grow property on the second row to 1. Every time I think I'm beginning to understand flex it throws another curve ball and it's driving me up the wall. Please help! Thank you.

In REACT, I have three divs that I would like to position side by side, separated by a small margin, and horizontally centered on the screen.

All the above is my ideal situation, but I have no idea how to accomplish this effect. Because when I create a flex structure like so:

Now each span element is a centered flex item.
Use flex auto margins to shift the outer spans left and right.

But justify-content can work here because auto margins always have priority.

Althought I might be late on this one, all those solutions seems complicated and may not work depending on the cases you're facing.
Very simply, just wrap the component you want to center with position : absolute, while letting the other two with justify-content : space-between, like so :

The result I'm looking for is one big block on the left, and then four small blocks on the right, and everything aligns.
I managed to do this in this fiddle but my solution has a couple of problems:

- it's not responsive

Also, you might notice that I have set the flex on both .big and .medium to 5, because I want the total width of the big box and the total width of two medium boxes to be equal, but it didn't work.
Is there a better way to do this?
It's tricky to have everything to align without getting into a lot of constraints, but using flexbox wrapping in the column direction on the right part could work.
Here's a quick version that uses a flex-flow: column wrap on the right part (.med-wrapper) and gets rid of the wrapper element on the two column wrappers inside it -

I've used calc()for the size calculations to counter margins, but hey, if you're already depending on flexbox, you probably need a fallback anyway. :-)
It should work with just the one explicit height on the .wrapper element, but the rest of the items should adjust accordingly - the downside is that overflow handling gets hard.
This is, incidentally, the type of "2D" situation (vs flexbox's 1D) that Grid Layout is meant to help with, but it'll be a while before that is a viable option.
