How could I select a column based on another column in mySQL? - mysql

The following script works fine. But I want to write it in one line rather than three lines. 'Size" is passed from my main program and its used here to test. Simply I want to get Price based on size.
Table columns :
LISTING_ID, PRICE_LARGE_PRICE, PRICE_SMALL_PRICE.
SET #Size = 'SMALL';
SELECT
PRICE_LARGE_PRICE,PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
INTO
#PRICE_LARGE_PRICE,#PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
FROM
prices
WHERE
PRICE_LISTING_ID = 60;
SET #ITEM_PRICE = (CASE #Size WHEN 'REGULAR' THEN #PRICE_LARGE_PRICE
WHEN 'SMALL' THEN #PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
ELSE null
END);
SELECT #ITEM_PRICE;
Any help is appreciated.

Following may work.
SET #Size = 'SMALL';
SELECT
PRICE_LARGE_PRICE,
PRICE_SMALL_PRICE,
CASE WHEN #Size = 'REGULAR' THEN PRICE_LARGE_PRICE
WHEN #Size = 'SMALL' THEN PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
END AS ITEM_PRICE
INTO
#PRICE_LARGE_PRICE,
#PRICE_SMALL_PRICE,
#ITEM_PRICE
FROM
prices
WHERE
PRICE_LISTING_ID = 60;

I think you want
SELECT
IF(#size == 'SMALL', PRICE_SMALL_PRICE, PRICE_LARGE_PRICE) AS ITEM_PRICE
FROM prices;

How to assign column value to a variable within mySQL script ?

I have the following script but it returns null all the time.
SELECT
#PRICE_LARGE_PRICE = PRICE_LARGE_PRICE,
#PRICE_SMALL_PRICE = PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
FROM
prices
WHERE
PRICE_LISTING_ID = 60;
SET #ITEM_PRICE = (CASE Size WHEN GivenLargeSizeName THEN #PRICE_LARGE_PRICE
WHEN GivenSmallSizeName THEN #PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
ELSE null
END);
The issue here is
#PRICE_LARGE_PRICE = PRICE_LARGE_PRICE,
#PRICE_SMALL_PRICE = PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
table returns PRICE_LARGE_PRICE & PRICE_SMALL_PRICE correctly but the assignment does not work. Hence CASE fails.
Any help is appreciated.
You need to use SELECT ... INTO:
SELECT PRICE_LARGE_PRICE, PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
INTO #PRICE_LARGE_PRICE, #PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
FROM prices
WHERE PRICE_LISTING_ID = 60;
Note that you need to ensure that the query only returns one row of data, using LIMIT 1 if necessary.
SELECT
#PRICE_LARGE_PRICE:=PRICE_LARGE_PRICE,
#PRICE_SMALL_PRICE:=PRICE_SMALL_PRICE
FROM
prices
WHERE
PRICE_LISTING_ID = 60;

How to Change Select Query Value to Text using MySQL?

Take a look at the following query. How do you display Column 'Action' as text.
If the result of 'Action' is LEQ 0 then dipslay the text "Crash" and if 'Action'
is GRT 0 display the text "Hold"?
SELECT col1 AS Action
FROM vdk
WHERE t_stamp Between "{StartTime}" AND "{EndTime}"
Refactoring the answer above, since i don't see the necessity to add a query to an alias table. I think this should work the other answer should work too btw, but its a little more complicated query for no given reason.
SELECT (CASE WHEN col1 <= 0 THEN 'Crash' ELSE 'Hold' END) AS Action
FROM vdk
WHERE t_stamp Between "{StartTime}" AND "{EndTime}"
Use CASE WHEN ... ELSE ... END and select from your set (query):
SELECT *, (CASE WHEN Action <= 0 THEN 'Crash' ELSE 'Hold' END) as ActionText
FROM (
SELECT col1 AS Action
FROM vdk
WHERE t_stamp Between "{StartTime}" AND "{EndTime}"
) q
This application is similar to my first question and I thought it might help someone else down the the road.
User can select from a Table's Drop Down List a set of options to enter a value into the Database.
Using Ignition's Power Table Component's Extension Function configureEditor with the following script.
This script sets up the Drop Down List.
if colName == 'Action':
return {options': [(0, 'Null'), (1, 'HOLD'), (2, 'CRASH')]}
Along with the same Power Table's Extension Function onCellEdited script.
This script enters the selection as a value into the database.
#onCellEdited Upadte Query
row = rowIndex
col = colIndex
colName = colName
value = newValue
ndx = self.data.getValueAt(row,0)
query = "UPDATE vdk SET %s = ? WHERE ndx = ?" % colName
system.db.runPrepUpdate(query,[value,ndx],'history')
system.db.refresh(self.data)

How to query a SQL statement which depends on other values of same table?

I have a table with 3 columns( name, objectroot_dn, distinguishedname). Here distinguishedname is like a parent to objectroot_dn. I have to find whether for each objectroot_dn is there a child exists or not?
I can do this using the query below. It will return True if there is a child, False if there is not. But my problem is when the total dataset gets increased it takes lots of time.
For example, If the total number of row is 50,000 then it takes 10 mins for this query to complete.
Since I'm using a framework for different database, I can't index the columns.
SELECT
name,
objectroot_dn,
distinguishedname,
CASE
WHEN (SELECT count(*)
FROM (SELECT name
FROM elaoucontainergeneraldetails
WHERE objectroot_dn = dn.distinguishedname
LIMIT 1) AS tabel1) > 0
THEN 'True'
ELSE 'False'
END
FROM elaoucontainergeneraldetails AS dn
WHERE objectroot_dn = 'SOME_VALUE';
Please let me know how can I increase the speed of this query.
Thanks in advance. Appreciate all help.
You can have the same solution using left join or exists:
SELECT
dn.name,
dn.objectroot_dn,
dn.distinguishedname,
CASE
WHEN dn_in.objectroot_dn is not null
THEN 'True'
ELSE 'False'
END
FROM elaoucontainergeneraldetails AS dn
LEFT JOIN elaoucontainergeneraldetails dn_in on dn_in.objectroot_dn = dn.distinguishedname
WHERE objectroot_dn = 'SOME_VALUE';
EXISTS(subquery) yields a boolean value:
SELECT dn.name
, dn.objectroot_dn
, dn.distinguishedname
, EXISTS (SELECT *
FROM elaoucontainergeneraldetails nx
WHERE nx.objectroot_dn = dn.distinguishedname
) AS truth_value
FROM elaoucontainergeneraldetails AS dn
WHERE dn.objectroot_dn = 'SOME_VALUE'
;

IF Then Else Mysql

Working on a view that pulls from two table however in one table I need to select either one field or another depending on a third..it's the if else that has me stubbed.
Create view as
select
pens.PartNo,
pens.Title,
ranges.weight
if(pens.SpeacialOffer = 1 then pens.offer as Price else pens.Price)
from
pens, ranges
where
pens.penrange = ranges.id;
If the specialoffer is falged the the view needs to pull in the offer else it needs to pull in the Price.
What you need is a CASE operator:
CASE
WHEN condition
THEN value_a
ELSE value_b
END
So in your case:
CASE
WHEN pens.SpeacialOffer = 1
THEN pens.offer
ELSE pens.price
END
This replaces the entire column definition in your SELECT statement, so the whole view becomes:
Create View as
Select
pens.PartNo,
pens.Title,
ranges.weight,
Case
When pens.SpeacialOffer = 1
Then pens.offer
Else pens.price
End as Price
From
pens, ranges
Where
pens.penrange = ranges.id;
Use CASE, also converted the query to explicit join instead of implicit join
select pens.PartNo,
pens.Title,
ranges.weight,
(Case when
pens.SpeacialOffer = 1 then
pens.offer else pens.Price
end ) as Price
FROM pens,
JOIn ranges
ON pens.penrange = ranges.id;
Here's one way:
Create view as select
pens.PartNo,
pens.Title,
ranges.weight,
(pens.SpeacialOffer * pens.offer + (1 - pens.SpeacialOffer) * pens.price) as Price
from
pens,
ranges
where
pens.penrange = ranges.id;

Mysql assign a single column value to a declared value using Select case

I am stucked with following issue,
I ve delcared a varibale (DOUBLE) in a stored procedure, and i need to assign a value (item price) from a table (item) to this declared variable. however, i need to get this value from a select query which uses case inside, the item price could be in 2 columns based on a logic i have to find the correct item price. Please help me solve this as when i execute it gives me a error,
Here how is layered,
DECLARE no_more_users INT DEFAULT 0;
DECLARE user_id INT DEFAULT 0;
DECLARE cart_id INT DEFAULT 0;
DECLARE cart_item_id INT DEFAULT 0;
DECLARE user_gift_id INT DEFAULT 0;
DECLARE itemPrice DOUBLE DEFAULT 0.0;
SELECT
CASE
WHEN sale_price=0 OR sale_price IS NULL THEN (price - ( price * discount ))
ELSE sale_price
END
INTO itemPrice
FROM item WHERE item_id = p_item_id ;
DECLARE checked_in_users CURSOR FOR
SELECT DISTINCT ul.user_id
FROM user_location ul
LEFT JOIN location_section ls ON ul.location_section_id = ls.location_section_id
INNER JOIN user u ON ul.user_id = u.user_id
INNER JOIN user_profile up ON u.user_id = up.user_id
INNER JOIN location_event le ON ul.location_event_id = le.location_event_id
WHERE ul.location_id = p_location_id AND ul.location_event_id = p_event_id
AND ul.checked_out_on IS NULL AND (ul.checked_in_on BETWEEN le.start_time AND le.end_time )
AND u.status = 1 ;
DECLARE CONTINUE HANDLER FOR NOT FOUND
SET no_more_users = 1;
OPEN checked_in_users;
FETCH checked_in_users INTO user_id;
read_loop: LOOP
some more code...
please note, sale_price, price, and discount are coulmns of item table, The logic is if sale_price is null or value is 0, then i actual sale price should be obtained from price coulmn. Finally what i need is asign corect item price in to previously declared varibale.
Any help will be highly appriciated.
There are two foms to the CASE statement, one with expressions and one with values. You are mixing them up.
with values:
CASE variable
WHEN value_1 THEN foo
WHEN value_2 THEN bar
END
with expressions:
CASE
WHEN expression_1 THEN foo
WHEN expression_2 THEN bar
END
Try
CASE
WHEN sale_price=0 OR sale_price IS NULL THEN (price - ( price * discount ))
ELSE sale_price
END
Also, you do not need the "AS correct_price" when you are using an INTO
Your select query has some problems.
The version of CASE you are are using - ie CASE var WHEN val1 THEN - doesn't work when trying to match a NILL, because in SQL null is not equal to null.
Also, you can't combine values with conditions as you hAve.
Instead, use the version if CASS that simply conditions. There are other suntactic problems. Converting your broken query then gives:
SELECT
CASE
WHEN ifnull(sale_price, 0) = 0 THEN price - (price * discount)
ELSE sale_price
END
INTO itemPrice
FROM item
WHERE item_id = p_item_id;
Note: if your table has s column called itemPrice, you must choose another name from your variable. Mysql gets confused :/
