Please, I just migrated from Windows to Mac recently. I installed XAMPP on my mac and also installed PHP and MySQL using Homebrew on my mac. I can easily connect to the MySQL from homebrew using the Navicat if I start it using the command brew services start mysql
But, the problem is if I stop the brew service and start my XAMPP, I can't connect to MySQL. I can easily connect with phpMyAdmin web, but with Navicat, it keeps throwing error that it can't connect to the localhost.
I tried looking up the port the MySQL is running and it is 3306. But using host=localhost, username=root, password=<empty>, port=3306 but I still get the error.
Any help is appreciated.
I know the post is old, but I still think it's useful to come up with solutions anyway. I'm using MAMP and I just had a configuration problem, to allow access to MySQL.
When I checked "Allow network access to MySQL", it was OK for me.

I have MySQlWorkBench and SqlYog together on my machine.
And I have XAMPP control panel to start Apache and MySql.
When i have only SqlYog then XAMPP was starting the MySql successfully. But after installing MySql, XAMPP never started the MySql immediately and it starts once i stopped one service perhaps having name like "MySql57" from services.msc.
Please suggest how i could handled together the MySql and SqlYog.
And with this please suggest that how could i connect the MySql and SqlYog from ASP.Net application.

I am new to using MySQL and I needed to download it for school, however, I keep getting this error message (picture below). I am using xampp and connecting using the username root. the port also matches what it is telling me. It will let me proceed but a lot of the features are missing. Any help at all would be appreciated.

As I can see, You are using latest XAMPP.
All you need to do is, after opening MySQL Workbench, and instead of setting up a new connection, Press CTRL+R or click on DATABASE tab in the top menu. Select Reverse Engineer and provide necessary information. You are good to go now.
The MySql workbench wont crash or show any compatibility issue now.
The current version of XAMPP uses MariaDB instead of MySQL.
Because MySQL Workbench is designed to work with MySQL and not with the very similar drop in replacement MariaDB, you are gonna have problems ...
So, if you want to use MySQL Workbench with XAMPP then a solution would be to try installing the last version of XAMPP that uses MySQL. That version is probably 1.8.3 from (August of 2014?). You can download it here:

If you are using the latest XAMPP that uses MariaDB, in that case in your MySQL Workbench don't use 'Connect to Database' instead use 'Reverse Engineer' and provide the necessary credentials. That's all, No hassle.
I encounter the same message followed by a crash of MySQL Workbench, with version 6.3.7 (build 1199).
I didn't find a solution, but here is a work-around:
Once you press the button Continue anyway, just open a database use toto, and then wait a bit (a minute is enough in my case), and then you can call a query without a crash. I found this trick here.
I experimented the same with WAMP 3.2.0.
MariaDB was configured to listen to port 3306 (the usal MySQL port) and MySQL 8 was listening on port 3308. If you are in this case, don't be fooled by the fact you have 2 DBs.
To solve this, you have to choose the DB you want. I wanted MySQL and I just ask MySQLWorkBench to open a connection on port 3308 to MySQL.

It's limited in its abilities, but I had no troubles connecting and browsing.
I had the similar problem because i was using Denwer at the same time.
To solve the problem:
Stop Denwer
Restart MySQL server
Profit! Now you can open your database in the Workbench
The idea is that denwer was starting its local server which didnt allow MySQL to start normally.
If you want to use denwer at the same time wth MySQL you can just start it after MySQL (Point 4).
In my case I already had MySql server and workbench installed and setup prior to my XAMPP installation. I wanted to continue with my existing setup.
I also installed MySql server with my XAMPP. I started mysql inside XAMPP and when I connected to MySql Workbench, I encountered the same error. Because Workbench was trying to connect with the server which was installed with XAMPP, apparently this was incompatible.
So I stopped mysql in XAMPP and started started mysql server manually(the previous setup and installed server).

You can also config XAMPP to use your existing SqlServer.
So I had the same problem. For me none of the methods worked, but then I found out that my MariaDB was occupying the same port, so I uninstalled it and that solved the problem.
i had same issue, i changed the mysql server port from 3306 to 3308 in XAMPP config file.

I am running Mac OS 10.10.2. I have recently been educating myself about php and SQL in order to create an online database application for my employer. However, I have been unable to load up my MySQL databases in phpMyAdmin. I have tried following some advice from this forum, but no answers seem to solve my issue.
I installed MySQLWorkbench (Ver. 6.2.4.12437) as well as XAMPP (Ver. 5.6.3-0), and was using phpMyAdmin to have a play around and better understand what I was getting myself into. I then found one of those follow-the-bouncing-ball type teaching websites which advised me to download and install the MySQL community server (Currently running Ver. 5.6.23)
As instructed, I was learning SQL commands through Terminal and built up some databases/tables this way. I decided I wanted to jump into phpMyAdmin where I felt it'd be easier to continue my work. At first XAMPP was unable to turn on the servers which I overcame by uninstalling and reinstalling. Then I was getting a #2002 error when trying to access phpMyAdmin. I tinkered with config files and put in details relating to my localhost MySQL server (Or at least I assume as much).
I was able to get back into phpMyAdmin finally, but my databases made through terminal are not there.
phpMyAdmin shows: cdcol (the example database), information_schema, mysql, performance_schema, phpmyadmin, and test.
If I open terminal and punch in 'mysql' then 'SHOW DATABASES;' it only lists: information_schema.
If I open terminal and punch in 'mysql' with username 'root' and my password, then 'SHOW DATABASES;' it lists: information_schema, mysql, performance_schema, my tutorial/learning database, and my business database. I dropped the test database from here. THESE are what I want to bring up in phpMyAdmin.
I can only guess that I haven't got it configured properly to access this last mysql server, but I can't determine where I am going wrong. If anyone can shed some light on this, that'd be greatly appreciated.
It appears as if you have two MySQL instances; one from the XAMPP and also the MySQL Community Server that you installed yourself.
The "M" of XAMPP is for MySQL, so yes usually it runs its own MySQL server instance. That's sort of the point of the packaged kit, so you don't have to worry about having any of your own applications installed. In theory it should be no problem to stop the XAMPP MySQL instance and instead use your other one, but may require tweaking some configuration files and is probably not supported. If you can make it work, I don't see a reason why it would be a problem, though.
My suggestion is to either use the complete XAMPP stack or roll your own installation rather than mix and match.
I know the question I am about to ask is a very stupid once but I am new to MYSQL so please bear with me. Want I want to do is create a database on my local machine and also access/manipulate it from their. I thought MYSQL WB was the all in one tool to do this i.e it will also allow me to create a database and also make a MYSQL server from which to access it. But I came to know the Workbench is just a front end and you need to have a some kind of a seperate MYSQL server module for it to access.
The problem is I can't seem to find any link for a simple a server module on the MYSQL download site.

It has one Cluster Server but I don't think this is what I am looking for. If anyone could provide a link to the MYSQL server module using which I could connect MYSQL Workbench on my local host, and the steps to connect them that would be great.
The one your looking for is named MySQL Community Edition. The current version is 5.6.14. Just select your platform (mac, linux or windows) and follow the installation guide.
