Show User location on google maps - google-maps

First thing is I will tell you I am new to google maps and some of it is very confusing to me. What I need to do is show a users location and have the appropriate markers show up. I have the database all ready and somewhat of the Google map.
What I am working with is an example from here. What I can either get is the markers if I use a static LatLng or just the users dynamic location with no markers.
Need help please. And if you downvote this post please let me know why.
Code I am using can be found at https://jsfiddle.net/8q1apmdy/9/ and show where in the blow code is where I am missing something, most likely small or in the wrong position.
function initMap() {
if (navigator.geolocation) {
navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition((position) => {
var pos = {
lat: position.coords.latitude,
lng: position.coords.longitude
};
});
var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map'), {
center: pos,
zoom: 12
});
}

a) While running your code locally, I was getting 'pos' undefined, so I moved the following code 'var map = new google.maps.Map(..' inside the getCurrentPosition(){...
b) Then I got another error ' InvalidValueError: setMap: not an instance of Map;' so created a 'var map' globally.
Loaded the map successfully, but still markers were not loaded. while debugging your code at this point 'var marker = new google.maps.Marker({...' it is iterating for all markers from xml but somehow markers are not adding to the map..dont know the reason yet?
So I have tried in a different way. Please see all markers from xml displayed on map. Here I am just getting the 'name' in marker, you might need to add other parameters like id, address etc.
JSFiddle added for reference
var infowindow;
var map;
//var downloadUrl;
function initialize() {
var mapOptions = {
zoom: 12,
center: new google.maps.LatLng(-33.868820, 151.209290),
mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP
}
map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map'), mapOptions);
downloadUrl("https://storage.googleapis.com/mapsdevsite/json/mapmarkers2.xml", function(data) {
var bounds = new google.maps.LatLngBounds();
var xml = data.responseXML;
var markers = xml.documentElement.getElementsByTagName('marker');
for (var i = 0; i < markers.length; i++) {
var id = markers[i].getAttribute('id');
var address = markers[i].getAttribute('address');
var type = markers[i].getAttribute('type');
var latlng = new google.maps.LatLng(parseFloat(markers[i].getAttribute("lat")),
parseFloat(markers[i].getAttribute("lng")));
bounds.extend(latlng);
var marker = createMarker(id, markers[i].getAttribute("name"), address, latlng, type);
}//finish loop
//map.fitBounds(bounds);
}); //end downloadurl

var marker = new google.maps.Marker({

});
google.maps.event.addListener(marker, "click", function() {
if (infowindow) infowindow.close();
infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow({content: name});
infowindow.open(map, marker);
});
return marker;

Algolia and google filter results based on user position

Hi I am using Google maps alongside algolia where I have an index 'locations' with 'lat' and 'lng'.
I am getting user location and watching position, I am also displaying markers from database based on lng and lat however I want to add a bit to it:
So I have followed that link:
https://www.algolia.com/doc/guides/geo-search/geo-search-overview/
And came up with:
#extends('master') #section('title', 'Live Oldham')
#section('extrafiles')
<script type="text/javascript" src="https://maps.google.com/maps/api/js?v=3&key=AIzaSyAirYgs4Xnt9QabG9v56jsIcCNfNZazq50&language=en"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="{!! asset('js/homesearch.js') !!}"></script>
#endsection
#section('content')
<div id="map_canvas" style="height:600px;"></div>
#endsection
and js:
$(document).ready(function() {
var map;
function initializeMap(){
map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map_canvas'), {
zoom: 19,
mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP
});
}
function locError(error) {
// the current position could not be located
alert("The current position could not be found!");
}
function setCurrentPosition(position) {
currentPositionMarker = new google.maps.Marker({
map: map,
position: new google.maps.LatLng(
position.coords.latitude,
position.coords.longitude
),
title: "Current Position"
});
map.panTo(new google.maps.LatLng(
position.coords.latitude,
position.coords.longitude
));
}
var latitude = position.coords.latitude;
var longitude = position.coords.longitude;
console.log(latitude);
console.log(longitude);
function displayAndWatch(position) {
// set current position
setCurrentPosition(position);
// watch position
watchCurrentPosition(position);
console.log(position);
}
function watchCurrentPosition(position) {
var positionTimer = navigator.geolocation.watchPosition(
function (position) {
setMarkerPosition(
currentPositionMarker,
position,
)
});
}
function setMarkerPosition(marker, position) {
marker.setPosition(
new google.maps.LatLng(
position.coords.latitude,
position.coords.longitude)
);
}
function initLocationProcedure() {
initializeMap();
if (navigator.geolocation) {
navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(displayAndWatch, locError);
}else{
alert("Your browser does not support the Geolocation API");
}
}
$(document).ready(function() {
initLocationProcedure();
});
var APPLICATION_ID = '75RQSC1OHE';
var SEARCH_ONLY_API_KEY = 'f2f1e9bba4d7390fc61523a04685cf12';
var INDEX_NAME = 'locations';
var PARAMS = { hitsPerPage: 100 };
// Client + Helper initialization
var algolia = algoliasearch(APPLICATION_ID, SEARCH_ONLY_API_KEY);
var algoliaHelper = algoliasearchHelper(algolia, INDEX_NAME, PARAMS);
// Map initialization
var markers = [];
//alert("heelo");
var fitMapToMarkersAutomatically = true;
algoliaHelper.on('result', function(content) {
renderHits(content);
var i;
// Add the markers to the map
for (i = 0; i < content.hits.length; ++i) {
var hit = content.hits[i];
console.log(hit)
var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
position: {lat: hit.longitude, lng: hit.latitude},
map: map,
title: hit.slug
});
markers.push(marker);
}
// Automatically fit the map zoom and position to see the markers
if (fitMapToMarkersAutomatically) {
var mapBounds = new google.maps.LatLngBounds();
for (i = 0; i < markers.length; i++) {
mapBounds.extend(markers[i].getPosition());
}
map.fitBounds(mapBounds);
}
});
function renderHits(content) {
$('#container').html(JSON.stringify(content, null, 2));
}
algoliaHelper.setQueryParameter('aroundRadius', 5000).search(); // 5km Radius
});
However there are few problems with this that I don't know how to tackle:
When user is moving, it doesn't center the map on the marker.
At this moment marker jumps between location when user moves, I would like for the marker to dynamically move on the map when user moves.
I want to use algolia to dynamically set markers, so I want to show markers with 5km radius from user location, and dynamically add or remove markers that are outside it.
I can't help you much with those questions since it's mostly about how to use GMap JS lib and I'm not experienced with it. However, something else catched my eyes:
var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
position: {lat: hit.longitude, lng: hit.latitude},
map: map,
title: hit.slug
});
You should put your coordinates in the _geoloc field in order to be able to use the geo-search features. It looks like this:
_geoloc: {
lat: 40.639751,
lng: -73.778925
}

info window not showing reverse geocoded address Google Maps V3

I'm coding a script that allows you to place a marker based on where you mouse click. I got that down. However, I cannot seem to get the infowindow to pop up when I pass in the reverse geocoded lat and lng. Could someone help me? Thanks!
Here is my code:
var geocoder;
function initialize()
{
geocoder = new google.maps.Geocoder();
var event = google.maps.event.addListener;
// intializing and creating the map.
var mapOptions = {
zoom: 4,
center: new google.maps.LatLng(-25.363882, 131.044922),
mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.TERRAIN
};
var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map'),
mapOptions);
event(map,'click',function(e){
var marker = placeMarker_and_attachMessage(e.latLng,map,count);
});
} // end of initalize.
/* place down marker based on where you click the mouse over a certain area on the map.
An infowindow should appear with the location of your marker.
*/
function placeMarker_and_attachMessage(position,map,num)
{
var event = google.maps.event.addListener;
var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
position: position,
map: map
});
var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow({
content: info_text(position)
});
event(marker,'mouseover',function(){
infowindow.open(map,this);
});
event(marker,'mouseout',function(){
infowindow.close();
});
} // end of function.
// Takes in the position passed by the 'placeMarker_and_attachMessage' function and returns a human readable string
function info_text(position)
{
var location = position;
var latlngStr = location.split(',',2);
var lat = parseFloat(latlngStr[0]);
var lng = parseFloat(latlngStr[1]);
var latlng = new google.maps.LatLng(lat,lng);
geocoder.geocode({'latLng': latlng}, function(results, status)
{
if (status == google.maps.GeocoderStatus.OK)
{
return results;
}
else
{
alert('could not pinpoint location');
}
});
}
google.maps.event.addDomListener(window, 'load', initialize);
In the code you posted, count is not defined in
var marker = placeMarker_and_attachMessage(e.latLng,map,count);

Google maps marker, with added directions code not showing

I seem to be having trouble adding a marker to one of my maps that I have created and I just can't seem to figure out where I am going wrong with it.
The map has been added to the site fine, and I even have the directions code working which happens to be displaying markers.
What I would like would be an initial marker to display where, in this case, the school is and have an info box on click to show the address but I just can't seem to get it displaying no matter what I try.
My code for everything is as follows:-
<div id="map_canvas" style="width:100%; height:392px;float:left;"></div>
<div id="directionsPanel" style="float:left;max-width:395px; overflow:scroll;overflow-x: hidden;"></div>
<script>
//define one global Object
var myMap = {}
//init
function initialize(){
//set up map options
var mapOptions = {
center: new google.maps.LatLng(53.964304,-2.028522),
zoom: 15,
scrollwheel: false,
mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP,
};
myMap.map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map_canvas"), mapOptions);
myMap.directionsService = new google.maps.DirectionsService();
myMap.directionsDisplay = new google.maps.DirectionsRenderer();
myMap.directionsDisplay.setMap(myMap.map);
myMap.directionsDisplay.setPanel(document.getElementById("directionsPanel"));
}//end init
function createMarker(point, title, content, map) {
var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
position: point,
map: map,
title: title
});
var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow({
content: content
});
google.maps.event.addListener(marker, 'click', function() {
if(curr_infw) { curr_infw.close();} // We check to see if there is an info window stored in curr_infw, if there is, we use .close() to hide the window
curr_infw = infowindow; // Now we put our new info window in to the curr_infw variable
infowindow.open(map, marker); // Now we open the window
});
return marker;
}
//directions
var calcRoute = function() {
var start = document.getElementById("start").value,
end = document.getElementById("end").value,
request = {
origin:start,
destination:end,
durationInTraffic :true,
transitOptions: {
departureTime: new Date()
},
provideRouteAlternatives : true,
travelMode: document.getElementById("travelmode").value
};
myMap.directionsService.route(request, function(result, status) {
if(status == google.maps.DirectionsStatus.OK) {
myMap.directionsDisplay.setDirections(result);
}else{
alert("something went wrong!");
}
});
}
//script loader
var loadScript = function() {
var script = document.createElement("script");
script.type = "text/javascript";
script.src = "http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?key=AIzaSyDZsY0Xbo137bDtb8wmefTogdGl82QM85s&sensor=false&callback=initialize";
document.body.appendChild(script);
}
window.onload = loadScript;
Any help on this guys would be greatly appreciated before I end up becoming bald from pulling out all my hair lol.

Google maps infowindow

I am trying to create listeners for some map markers. I can create the markers and they are on the map but, no matter which marker I click on it tells me "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot call method 'open' of undefined" . When I break at the open code it is showing markers[46] which is one more that the highest index. And it doesnt matter which marker I click on its always the same index.
EDIT: I edited the code and pasted all of it. No errors, but nothing happens when I click a marker. I am looking in Chrome and it looks like there isnt a event handler registered
<script>
var map;
var nav = [];
$(document).ready(function () {
//initialise a map
init();
var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow({});
$.get("xxxxxx.kml", function (data) {
html = "";
//loop through placemarks tags
i = 1;
$(data).find("Placemark").each(function (index, value) {
//get coordinates and place name
coords = $(this).find("coordinates").text();
contentString = $(this).find("description").text();
var partsOfStr = coords.split(',');
var lat = parseFloat(partsOfStr[0]);
var lng = parseFloat(partsOfStr[1]);
var myLatLng = new google.maps.LatLng(lng, lat);
place = $(this).find("name").text();
createMarker(myLatLng, place, contentString, i)
//store as JSON
c = coords.split(",")
nav.push({
"place": place,
"lat": c[0],
"lng": c[1]
})
//output as a navigation
html += "<li>" + place + "</li>";
i++;
});
//output as a navigation
$(".navigation").append(html);
//bind clicks on your navigation to scroll to a placemark
$(".navigation li").bind("click", function () {
panToPoint = new google.maps.LatLng(nav[$(this).index()].lng, nav[$(this).index()].lat)
map.panTo(panToPoint);
})
});
markers = [];
function createMarker(myLatLng, title, contentString, i) {
var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
position: myLatLng,
map: map,
title: title
});
google.maps.event.addListener(markers, 'click', function () {
infoWindow.setContent(contentString);
infowindow.open(map, markers[i]);
});
markers[i] = marker;
return marker
}
function init() {
//google.maps.event.addDomListener(window, 'init', Initialize);
var latlng = new google.maps.LatLng(39.047050, -77.131409);
var myOptions = {
zoom: 4,
center: latlng,
mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP
};
map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map"), myOptions);
}
})
This is almost a FAQ. When your loop ends, the value of i is 46 (based on your statement). There is no marker 46, so all the click listeners fail. It can be solved with function closure (a createMarker function which holds the association between the marker and the infowindow contents).
Something like this in your example (not tested), call it from inside your marker creation loop, requires a global markers array, but doesn't require the global infowindow array:
//global markers array
markers = [];
// global infowindow
var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow({});
// createMarker function
function createMarker(myLatLng, title, contentString, i)
{
var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
position: myLatlng ,
map: map,
title:title
});
google.maps.event.addListener(markers, 'click', function() {
infoWindow.setContent(contentString);
infowindow.open(map,markers[i]);
});
markers[i] = marker;
return marker
}

Google Map API V3: MarkerClusterer won't break down into markers

I have an application where I'm using the Google Map API to display markers for posts made by users using their lat/lon. I employed the MarkerClusterer capability for better organization of the markers, which works but with a bug of sorts.
Essentially, I've been testing this at home so the lat/lon has been the same for all test posts. Before using MarkerClusterer, zooming far into the map would eventually reveal all the markers. Unfortunately, using the MarkerClusterer, if there is, for example, a "5" listed for the number of markers that are very close together such as these test posts, clicking on the cluster reveals nothing. No markers ever appear when these are very close together. To reiterate, these markers do appear without the MarkerClusterer.
I upgraded to MarkerClustererPlus v2.0.9 per another post that described other issues with the MarkerClusterer but that hasn't solved the problem.
Any insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: geocodezip suggested the overlappingmarkerspidifier, which sounds great, but my code is fairly involved and I'm not sure how to incorporate it. Any insight much appreciated. Code follows:
function mainGeo()
{
if (navigator.geolocation)
{
navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition( mainMap, error, {maximumAge: 30000, timeout: 10000, enableHighAccuracy: true} );
}
else
{
alert("Sorry, but it looks like your browser does not support geolocation.");
}
}
var stories = {{storyJson|safe}};
var geocoder;
var map;
var markers = [];
function loadMarkers(stories){

story.copy = story.copy.substring(0, 120) + "...";
}
(function(story) {
var pinColor = "69f2ff";
