I am trying to create a notification widget like that used in Facebook, or Stack Overflow using the drop-down element of bootstrap. The contents are now breaking and flowing out of the container.

My list item looks like this:
<li><a>
<div class="row">
<div class="col-md-4">
<img/>
</div>
<div class="col-md-8">
<b>Title</b><br />
<span>Description</span>
</div>
</div>
</a>
</li>
I tried adding clearfix and assigning the width to the span, but nothing helps.
All you need to do is add this to your css, it will make the content of your a wrap nicely:
.navbar .nav li .dropdown-menu li a {
white-space: normal;
}
codepen
By default Bootstrap tries to wrap all the text inside the dropdown using white-space: nowrap;. You can undo that with white-space: normal;.
.dropdown-menu>li>a {
white-space: normal !important;
}

The Bootstrap drop-down menu is not working. I have tried other solutions but they seem not to work.
Any clues as to why.
<script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.11.0/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="//netdna.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.1.1/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="//netdna.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.1.1/css/bootstrap.min.css">
Below is my script source.
This is what you want?
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="//netdna.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.1.1/css/bootstrap.min.css">
<head>
<body>
<ul class="nav nav-tabs">
<li role="presentation" class="active">Home</li>
<li role="presentation">Help</li>
<li role="presentation" class="dropdown"> Dropdown <span class="caret"></span>
<ul class="dropdown-menu">
<li>Action</li>
<li>Another action</li>
<li>Something else here</li>
<li role="separator" class="divider"></li>
<li>Separated link</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.11.0/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="//netdna.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.1.1/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
I tried,
<div class = "btn-group" style="display:inline;">
<a class="dropdown-toggle" data-toggle="dropdown" aria-haspopup="true" aria-expanded="false">
<span class="fa fa-star-o" aria-hidden="true"></span> Rate
</a>
<ul class="dropdown-menu">
<li>Action</li>
</ul>
</div>
The problem with this is that the text link has a gradient around it which I don't like. How can I disable the gradient using CSS or is there some elegant way to do this? For some reason, copying this in jsfiddle doesn't work.
You can make background-color of link to be transparent.
/* hide menu link background color */
.navbar-default .navbar-nav>.open>a, .navbar-default .navbar-nav>.open>a:focus, .navbar-default .navbar-nav>.open>a:hover {
background-color: transparent !important;
}
/* hide menu link background color */
.navbar-default .navbar-nav>.open>a, .navbar-default .navbar-nav>.open>a:focus, .navbar-default .navbar-nav>.open>a:hover {
background-color: transparent !important;
}

<li>One more separated link</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</div><!-- /.navbar-collapse -->
</div><!-- /.container-fluid -->
</nav>
I was struggling wit this and found some way, I think I need to borrow power of css for this. please land me some skill if you know how.
I have navbar like this,
<div class = "header">
<nav class="navbar navbar-default">
<div class="container-fluid">
<!-- Brand and toggle get grouped for better mobile display -->
<div class="navbar-header">
<ul class="nav navbar-nav">
<li class="active">Link <span class="sr-only">(current)</span></li>
<li>Link</li>
<li class="dropdown">
Dropdown <span class="caret"></span>
<ul class="dropdown-menu">
<li>Action</li>
<li>Another action</li>
<li>Something else here</li>
<li role="separator" class="divider"></li>
<li>Separated link</li>
<li role="separator" class="divider"></li>
<li>One more separated link</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</div><!-- /.navbar-collapse -->
</div><!-- /.container-fluid -->
</nav>
</div>
and second header
<div class="subheader" style="background:yellow;>
<p>you</p>
</div>
now I want to bring these two blocks together so they look like one navbar divided by background color. how do I do this? I tried setting padding, margin to zero for both but won't work
Supposing you are using bootstrap, just set margin-bottom: 0 for the .navbar. You might want to remove borders as well.
See fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/yyw99nky/
Would like to ask I have a simple application in the navbar which consist a button like below snippet.
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap.min.css">
<script src="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>
<nav class="navbar navbar-default">
<div class="container-fluid">
<!-- Collect the nav links, forms, and other content for toggling -->
<div class="collapse navbar-collapse" id="bs-example-navbar-collapse-1">
<ul class="nav navbar-nav">
<li class="dropdown">
This should close when click <span class="caret"></span>
<ul class="dropdown-menu">
<li>Action
</li>
<li>Another action
</li>
<li>Something else here
</li>
<li role="separator" class="divider"></li>
<li>Separated link
</li>
<li role="separator" class="divider"></li>
<li>One more separated link
</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li class="dropdown">
Do not close when button click <span class="caret"></span>
<ul class="dropdown-menu">
<li style="text-align:center">
<button class="btn btn-default" type="submit">Button</button>
</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
<!-- /.navbar-collapse -->
</div>
<!-- /.container-fluid -->
</nav>
How should I code it in such a way that when the button in the dropdown menu is clicked and it should not close the dropdown? Also the css should only appect that particular dropdown menu and not the others?
Note : please run code in full page.
I gave the ul element the id "dropstop" ,and applied this following jquery code:
$('#dropstop').click(function(event){
event.stopPropagation();
});
This is the JSfiddle for it.
I found the jquery code from this post : Stack Overflow Post
I am using bootstrap framwork and trying to change few properties with navbar, like background color,
When I uses css from a local copy like, ./bootstrap.css override works fine or when I pasting whole css or just navbar css to liveweave CSS column override working.
But
when I am using maxcdn server like
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap.min.css">
<!-- Optional theme -->
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap-theme.min.css">
Override is failing whether its liveweave or my pc, even after using !important override fails.
I am using
navbar navbar-default navbar-fixed-top
classes
I am sure about what I said above, even before posting this question I visited at least 10 pages or similar question to find solution but none them used CSS from maxcdn server.

If you use a local css file for override. you must be sure this file is read after the maxcdn...... file. the last one is the css element used
Having the same issue... I noticed that, when viewing the maxcdn bootstrap.min.css in my text editor, the code stops running at ".glyphicon-phone:before{content:"\e145"}.glyphicon..." so I wonder if that is relating to the issue. Hoping that it gets sorted out soon!
