Install mysql package using puppet so it will be updated automatically - mysql

I want to install the MySQL package onto servers using Puppet. The package should be updated after a new release of the package. How can I write a manifest for that?

Using ensure => latest tells Puppet to update the package to the latest version. For example,
package { "mysql-server":
ensure => latest
}
This assumes that your server updates its package cache on a regular basis and that the server's Puppet client runs on a regular basis (most do). From the Puppet Labs documentation:
On packaging systems that can retrieve new packages on their own, you
can choose which package to retrieve by specifying a version number or
latest as the ensure value.

You cannot use "Weblogic Server" installs. You must use "Fusion Middlewware Infrastructure", which is WLS plus special pieces needed by Forms/Reports.

Services and env in manifest file?

I have a web (online calculator for an example) which developed by my fellow tem members. Now they want to deploy in PCF using manifests.
Languages used : python, php and javascipt.
I gone through the docs about pcf with manifest.yml
In that I don't have any idea about services and env.
What is that services and how can I find the services for the above project and also how can I find the environment variables?
And tell whether these fields are mandatory to run the project in PCF.

Does your app require any services to run? Services would be things like a database or message queue. If it does not, then you do not need to specify any services in your manifest. They are optional.
Similarly, for environment variables, you would only need to set them if they are required to configure your application. Otherwise, just omit that section of your manifest.
At the end of the day, you should talk with whomever developed the application or read the documentation they produce as that's the only way to know what services or environment variables are required.

Correct. The buildpack only includes Python itself. Your dependencies either need to be installed or vendored. To do this for Python, you need to include a requirements.txt file. The buildpack will see this and use pip to install your dependencies.

For Java apps, you need to push compiled code. That means, you need to run something like mvn package or gradle assemble to build your executable JAR or WAR file. This should be a self contained file that has everything necessary to run your app, compile class files, config, and all dependent JARs.
You then run cf push -p path/to/my-app.jar (or WAR, whatever you build). The cf cli will take everything in the app and push it up to Cloud Foundry where the Java buildpack will install things like the JVM and possibly Tomcat so you app can run.

In short, you can have as many buildpacks as you want. The last buildpack in the list is special because that is the buildpack which will set the start command for your application (although you can override this with cf push -c if necessary). The non-final buildpacks will run and simply install dependencies.

Run cf marketplace and see if there are any Postgres providers in your Marketplace. If there is one, you can just do a cf create-service <provider> <plan> <service name> and the foundation will create a database for you to use. You would then run a cf bind-service <app> <service name> to bind the service you create to your app. This will generate credentials and pass them along to your app when it starts. You app can then read the credentials out of VCAP_SERVICES and use them to make connections to the database.

Custom action fails to install MySQL

I have made a VS2010 project which installs MySQL by calling MySQLInstallerConsole.exe with necessary arguments. This works perfectly however, when I try to run this project's exe as a custom action it executes the exe but MySQL is not installed.
I checked the log file for MySQL exe and it had the following error:
Error 50: Package Name State change request failed.
What does this really mean, any solutions?
There are at least a couple of things that have something to do with this:
I believe the MySQL installer is an MSI file according to this:

You cannot install an MSI from a custom action of a Visual Studio setup because recursive calls to MSI installs are not allowed.
In a Everyone install custom actions run with the SYSTEM account, and installs are not often expecting this if they want to install files in user-profile folders because the SYSTEM account doesn't have any.
You need to bootstrap this somehow, and I think people are often using the WiX Burn bootstrapper for that. You define the ProductCode, name etc of the product and define how to install it.

How to create binary Debian package (s) for several architectures?

I'm trying to create packages for some robot controller code that will support different architectures, such as i386 and armhf (for Raspberry Pi). I don't know how Debian intends this to be done. Is there a way to create a single .deb package that contains both binaries? Or must I create a separate .deb package for each architecture, which I do know how to do?
In the latter case, if I give the two packages the same package name, I can't put them both in the same repository, but if they have different names, users will have to specify which package they want to install using apt-get. Is there a solution to this problem?
You need to have different binary packages for different architectures unless what you're packaging is interpreted and not compiled.
If the package you're making is compatible with all architectures, then the Architecture: field of your debian/control file must be any. This is telling you that the package can be built in any Debian supported architecture. Then you'll just compile it and cross-compile it to i386 and armhf.
About your second question, you can. In fact, this is how is done in the official Debian repositories. The binary packages have a suffix in the file name containing the architecture. See this example. When users install your package, they won't need to specify the architecture as it's automatically detected.

Installing files to x64 "Program Files" from x86 msi

I'm creating installer using InstallShield 2010 (basic MSI) that is having two features.
First feature consists of:
main .NET application compiled as x86,
some native x86 third party dlls which are used by main application (x64 versions are unavailable).
Second feature contains single component which is an extension for MS Reporting Services compiled as AnyCPU.
During UI sequence I'm using InstallScript custom action to enumerate all available Reporting Services instances from both x86 and x64 registry trees.
The user is prompted to select on which instance he wants to deploy our extension.
Based on selected instance I'm quering registry for actual location of Reporting Services in file system which is usually something like "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\Reporting Services" and storing this value in a MSI Property.
Then by using Set Directory action I'm setting destination directory of a component (our extension) to the value of that MSI Property.
Everything is installing perfectly fine unless you've trying to install it for x64 Reporting Services in that case extension files are installed to wrong location. Even thou MSI Property is set to correct path "C:\Program Files\MicroSoft..." (I've checked msi log) it looks like system is automatically redirecting to "Program Files (x86)".
Is there any possible solution to overcome this issue?
If you need to install to the 64-bit ProgramFiles folder, use a 64-bit MSI.
Finally solved this issue myself without creating 64bit MSI by using InstallScript custom actions.
First custom action to install:
Manually copy required files to desired location (InstallScript can access x64 Program Files)
Save this location in registry as a key component for this feature to use during uninstall
Second custom action to uninstall:
Read installed location from registry (do not use System Search to get this value due to it'll be auto translated by WindowsInstaller to "ProgramFiles (x86)")
Delete files
You can change the INSTALLDIR property to ProgramFile64 rather then ProgramFiles, this will help you to install on desired path, since you application is 32-bit so the path will be C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Your Company Name\Your Product Name along with this have you made your components as 64-bit compatible?
