display:none not impacting on navigation bar - html

I'm trying to use media queries to change the text links in a navbar to icon font characters on smaller screens utilising display:none but it's not working as I'm currently using it.
I'm also using Font Awesome's icon fonts using the classes fa fa-home etc
.firstnav {
display: inline;
}
.secondnav {
display: none;
}
#media only screen and (max-width: 630px) {
.firstnav {
display: none;
}
.secondnav {
display: inline;
}
}
<nav class="topnav" id="myTopnav">
<a href="#home">
<p class="firstnav">Rob Hern</p>
<p class="secondnav poppins">RH</p>
</a>
<a href="#home">
<p class="firstnav">Home</p>
<p class="secondnav fa fa-home"></p>
</a>
<a href="#portfolio">
<p class="firstnav">Portfolio</p>
<p class="secondnav fa fa-code"></p>
</a>
<a href="#contact">
<p class="firstnav">Contact</p>
<p class="secondnav fa fa-envelope-o"></p>
</a>
<a href="#about">
<p class="firstnav">About</p>
<p class="secondnav fa fa-user"></p>
</a>
</nav>
Viewing as:
Full size screen
With media query size screen
Thank you!

Add one more condition
.secondnav.fa{ display:none}
#media only screen and (max-width: 630px) {
.secondnav.fa {
display: inline;
}
}
Because font-awesome icons are display:inline-block by default so you have to overwrite them as you are using them directly with your p tags .secondnav class.
Below is a working snippet .
.firstnav {
display: inline;
}
.secondnav {
display: none;
}
.secondnav.fa {
display: none;
}
#media only screen and (max-width: 630px) {
.firstnav {
display: none;
}
.secondnav {
display: inline;
}
.secondnav.fa {
display: inline;
}
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.7.0/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<nav class="topnav" id="myTopnav">
<a href="#home">
<p class="firstnav">Rob Hern</p>
<p class="secondnav poppins">RH</p>
</a>
<a href="#home">
<p class="firstnav">Home</p>
<p class="secondnav fa fa-home"></p>
</a>
<a href="#portfolio">
<p class="firstnav">Portfolio</p>
<p class="secondnav fa fa-code"></p>
</a>
<a href="#contact">
<p class="firstnav">Contact</p>
<p class="secondnav fa fa-envelope-o"></p>
</a>
<a href="#about">
<p class="firstnav">About</p>
<p class="secondnav fa fa-user"></p>
</a>
</nav>

Have you tried to use inline-block?

Your code works fine. You can see it here. Play with the vertical handler. And you'll see it works.
Note : Have you tried clearing your browser's cache?

Align images with text baseline in <div>

I have a CGI script that creates a "navigation aid" consisting of arrow icons and text label like this:
Obviously it would look much better if the text baseline would align with the bottom of the arrow icons.
The arrow icons were copied from GNOME 16x16 arrow actions a few years ago.
The HTML code is this:
<div><a title="Erster Eintrag" href="#A0"><img alt="|<" src="/ig16a/go-first.png" class="toolbar"></a> <img src="/ig16a/go-previous.png" alt="<" class="toolbar"> <span class="navaid">2 von 29</span> <img src="/ig16a/go-next.png" alt=">" class="toolbar"> <img alt=">|" src="/ig16a/go-last.png" class="toolbar"></div>
The CSS used is:
body {
color: black;
}
.navaid, .toolbar {
font-size: small;
font-family: sans-serif;
background: #fffab7;
margin-top: 1ex;
margin-bottom: 1ex;
}
If someone wonders about the different classes:
The idea was to hide the arrow icons when printing the page...
In case someone needs the arrow icons (Sorry for the length!):

Use vertical-align: top | middle | bottom; in your CSS to align vertically.
Also ensure you use display: inline-block; in your CSS to align to the top / bottom of your images correctly.
Note: You can also use display: inline-flex | inline-grid;. See MDN for details of display options.

<p>Some text</p>
Remove side note concerning frameworks
maybe try adding this to your CSS:
.toolbar{
margin-bottom: 0;
}

Have button appear with icon only in responsive mode. (html/css/materialize)

How can i have a button lose it's text but not it's icon when viewing on a mobile advice?
For example when it shows a face icon by MaterializeCSS and the text "support", I want it to remove the text but still show the icon so the button becomes smaller in size. I use the MaterializeCSS framework and the Materialize icons.
The button looks like this in html:
<a class="waves-effect waves-light white-text top-button z-depth-2">
<i class="material-icons left">
face
</i>
Contact support
</a>
<a class="waves-effect waves-light white-text top-button z-depth-2">
<i class="material-icons left">
face
</i>
<span class="hide-on-small-only"> Contact support </span>
</a>
You need to add span tag with hide-on-small-only class from materialize to hide button text on mobile only.
Try this one
Use media query on mobile like this .
#media only screen and (max-width: 767px) {
.top-button {
font-size: 0;
}
.top-button i {
font-size: 16px;
}
}
Here is the working code
.top-button {
font-size: 16px;
}
#media only screen and (max-width: 767px) {
.top-button {
font-size: 0;
}
.top-button i {
font-size: 16px;
}
}
<a class="waves-effect waves-light white-text top-button z-depth-2"><i class="material-icons left">face</i>Contact support</a>

Mouse Over CSS Issue (CSS applying opacity afterwards)

How come when someone mouses over the Google Icon, Instagram and Facebook Icon they appear faded afterwards.
This also is happening in mobile responsive menu where text fades and doesn't return to its original color state.
Website is hopkinslawokc.com
Hi you have not opacity set, But if you hover over the icons than got he a opacity. If you give the li > id give a opacity. so li id="menu-item-40 opacity: 0.35;
// Social Hover
jQuery(".social-icon").hover(function(){
jQuery(this).animate({ opacity: 0.35 }, 150);
}, function(){
jQuery(this).animate({ opacity: 1 }, 150);
});
/* this bit of code was found in
http://hopkinslawokc.com/wp-content/themes/goodspace-v1-11/javascript/gdl-scripts.js
*/
ul {
list-style: none;
font-size: 36px;
}
ul li {
float: left;
margin-right: 20px;
}
<link href="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/font-awesome/4.6.3/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<ul>
<li class="social-icon">
<i class="fa fa-facebook"></i>
</li>
<li class="social-icon">
<i class="fa fa-twitter"></i>
</li>
<li class="social-icon">
<i class="fa fa-google"></i>
</li>
</ul>
It is working just as expected except what the first answer said...if you want it to appear faded from the get go then you need to add it in the css.
this is the css only solution.
ul {
list-style: none;
font-size: 36px;
}
ul li {
float: left;
margin-right: 20px;
opacity:.35;
transition: all 150ms linear;
}
ul li:hover{opacity:1;}
.fa-facebook{color:blue;}
.fa-twitter{color:#2b2626;}
.fa-google{color:#ff0000;}
<link href="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/font-awesome/4.6.3/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<ul>
<li class="social-icon">
<i class="fa fa-facebook"></i>
</li>
<li class="social-icon">
<i class="fa fa-twitter"></i>
</li>
<li class="social-icon">
<i class="fa fa-google"></i>
</li>
</ul>

Font Awesome icons have text-decoration issues inside links

I have a "ugly" issue with font-awesome, when I place a icon-link (icon inside a link) in front of a text. By hovering the icon, the icon itself will not get underlined but somehow the space between the text and the icon.
Somehow the text-decoration css rule from the link (underline while hover) collides with the one coming from the icon in this strangely appearing space.
How can I get rid of this underline in the space and have no decoration at all in the end?
(when possible without adding a class to the link element nor using JS)
Here is a code snippet that may help you.
a {
text-decoration: none;
}
a:hover {
text-decoration: underline;
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.6.3/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<h1>
<a href="#">
<i class="fa fa-wrench"></i>
</a>
Text of Title
</h1>
Fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/kg6zdxu5/
Apparently your <a> tag and your <i> tag will not render a space if you write them in a single line. Avoiding line break between these two elements fixes your issue.
Code Snippet:
a {
text-decoration: none;
}
a:hover {
text-decoration: underline;
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.6.3/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<h1>
<i class="fa fa-wrench"></i>
Text of Title
</h1>
EDIT:
Usually it is better if you do not change the default display value of an element, but here you can use display: inline-block; in your <a> tag to remove that space.
a {
text-decoration: none;
}
a:hover {
text-decoration: underline;
}
h1 > a {
display: inline-block;
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.6.3/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<h1>
<a href="#">
<i class="fa fa-wrench"></i>
</a>
Text of Title
</h1>
Not necessarily question-related but I stopped using icon fonts a while back and adopted SVG icons, which, in my opinion, are way better.
Here's a good article on making the switch, and here's another on how to use them.
DEMO:
a {
text-decoration: none;
}
a:hover {
text-decoration: underline;
}
h1 > a {
display: inline-block;
color: purple;
}
.icon {
display: inline-block;
width: 1em;
height: 1em;
stroke-width: 0;
stroke: currentColor;
fill: currentColor;
}
.icon-wrench {
width: 0.939453125em;
}
<h1>
<a href="#">
<svg class="icon icon-wrench">
<use xlink:href="#icon-wrench"></use>
</svg>
</a>
Text of Title
</h1>
<svg style="display:none;">
<symbol id="icon-wrench" viewBox="0 0 30 32">
<title>wrench</title>

If I understood you correctly, you want to remove the unnecessary underline you have and add this underline under the icon.
Just remove the a:hover and replace it with i:hover, and that should do the trick.
a {
text-decoration: none;
}
.fa-wrench:hover {
text-decoration: underline;
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.6.3/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<h1>
<a href="#">
<i class="fa fa-wrench"></i>
</a>
Text of Title
</h1>
Simply remove a:hover and add .fa-wrench:hover.
h1 {
font-size:2.5em;
}
a {
text-decoration: none;
}
.fa-wrench:hover{
text-decoration: underline;
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.6.3/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<h1>
<a href="#">
<i class="fa fa-wrench"></i>
</a>
Test Title
</h1>
a {
text-decoration: none;
}
a:hover {
text-decoration: underline;
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.6.3/css/font-awesome.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<h1>
<a href="#">
<i class="fa fa-wrench"></i>
</a>
Text of Title
</h1>
Usually this problem pops up when you have multiple font awesome icons, for example, below we have 2 icons:
<span>
<a href="https://github.com/" class="me-4 text-reset text-decoration-none">
<i class="fab fa-github px-1"></i>
</a>
</span>
<span>
<a href="https://github.com/" class="me-4 text-reset text-decoration-none">
<i class="fab fa-github px-1"></i>
</a>
</span>
The key class is text-decoration-none, which you define in your style sheet as follow:
.text-decoration-none:hover{
text-decoration: none;
}
In this way, while hovering, your font awesome icon won't show an underline. It overwrites your a:hover. Keep in mind that you need <span></span> tags to achieve this...
so you need a new :hover class plus <span> tags.

How to target all but the first tag in css3?

This is my html
<div class="app-screens">
<a href="./includes/images/taaid/Screenshot_2013-12-08-15-00-37.png" data-title="TA AID" data-lightbox="taaid">

<img src="./includes/images/taaid/Screenshot_2013-12-08-15-06-45.png"/>
</a>
</div>
and my css
.app-screens img:not(:first-child) {
display: none;
}
I want to hide all the img tags except the first. But they all still show... Does anyone know whats wrong?
Thanks
.app-screens a:not(:first-child) img {
display: none;
}
You have to target the anchors before then the image.
Instead of img:not(:first-child) you have to use a:not(:first-child).
CSS:
.app-screens a:not(:first-child) {
display: none;
}
You can try this:
Demoenter link description here
.app-screens a:not(:first-child) {
display: none;
}
Just for fun, you can do this with CSS2, in case you wanted to support more browsers:
.app-screens a img { display: none; }
.app-screens a:first-child img { display: block; }
