Chrome Adobe Flash is out of date - google-chrome

I keep getting this browser (chrome) notification saying
Adobe Flash Player was blocked because it is out of date. Update, Run This Time
If I click run this time it allows me to run any flash content on current page but same notification on new page. If however, I click update plugin it takes me to this Chrome support page. I follow instructions and go to chrome://plugins which give me a url under Adobe Flash Player which is following Download Critical Security Update and as you see this again links me to the Google support page with instructions on how to update and that I've already been on.

I encountered the same issue with Chrome on my Linux system.
Here is my solution for Linux system:
Install chrome 55+, if you have an older version.
Download flash player,
url: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
step 1 - os
choose "linux 64 bit",
step 2 - version
choose "FP xx for linux 64-bit (.tar.gz) - PPAPI",
Download,
Uncompress,
Copy files in the directory into ~/.config/google-chrome/PepperFlash/,
Make it executable via: chmod +x libpepflashplayer.so
Append parameter to chrome's start command,
Where is the command:
(1) for icon,
right click icon -> properties, there is "command" input,
(2) for shortcut,
config the shortcut,
The parameter to append is:
--ppapi-flash-path=/home/eric/.config/google-chrome/PepperFlash/libpepflashplayer.so
e.g.
/usr/bin/google-chrome-stable %U --ppapi-flash-path=/home/eric/.config/google-chrome/PepperFlash/libpepflashplayer.so
Restart chrome,
Now the flash should work.

I assume you have solved your issue by now, but for the benefit of others: Flash is now provided as a so-called component and updated separately from the main Chrome application. I would therefore suggest first checking chrome://components and manually check for an update there.
By the way, the same is true for the Widevine DRM component, which if not up-to-date may stop Netflix, etc. from running.

SSLKEYLOGFILE environment variable doesn't populate any text file

My operating system is Windows 10 64 bits. I use the latest versions of Firefox and Chrome.
I want to save the pre-master keys in order to use them with WireShark.
For this, I have found many tutorials that all recommend using the SSLKEYLOGFILE environment variable.
However, no matter the path I put in this variable, no file is being created by Firefox (normal and developer editions) or Chrome. This is true even when I restart those browsers or the operating system. This is also true when I clear the cache on the browsers.
I found an alternative way of setting the SSLKEYLOGFILE variable with Chrome by launching the browser with the following argument:
--ssl-key-log-file=PATH
And while this argument does create a log file, it is never populated. It remains completely empty.
What makes this problem even more annoying is that I don't know if there's any debug log that would at least let me know what's happening.
Anyone have ideas on how to solve this issue?

I would not use the --ssl-key-log-file flag with Chrome. In my testing, it does not have an effect.
Steps to get SSL keylog file
Change your directory to one that you or your programs have access to. I am using the Desktop folder.
C:\> cd $HOME\Desktop
Set the SSLKEYLOGFILE variable. This sets it for the user (HKCU). To set it for the machine (HKLM), add the /m flag to the end of the command.
PS C:\Users\rj\Desktop> SetX SSLKEYLOGFILE "$(get-location)\ssl.log"
Verify that the variable has been set in a separate powershell window (SetX does not apply to the current window).
PS C:\Users\rj\Desktop> Get-ChildItem ENV: | findstr SSLKEYLOGFILE
SSLKEYLOGFILE C:\Users\rj\Desktop\ssl.log
You can also verify that SSLKEYLOGFILE is a user variable by going to the Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced tab > Environment Variables > User Variables. You should see a listing like the powershell example where the value is a directory.
Open Chrome/Firefox and go to an https website like https://stackoverflow.com.
You should see an ssl.log show up on your desktop.

You mentioned that you are using Wireshark. If you using it to export a file from a TLS-encrypted stream in a capture, this article may help you.
One thing I ran into is: Chrome doesn't always fully close when you close the window. Sometimes it stays open in the background. Use the Windows Process Explorer to list all the processes and make cure Chrome is closed. Also, after restarting Chrome, you can double click on it in Process Explorer and select the Environment tab to list all the variables set in it's environment. Make sure SSLKEYLOGFILE is shown in that list. Then Chrome will be sending keys to the specified file.
First off all the problem is that the browsers are protected better and that flaw is patched, thats why you cant capture no ssl. I dont know the details. But chrome with --no-sandbox(linux) option on ,when running will enable you to capture ssl/tls key without any issues from the first try, so you can play with decription of packets. Never tried on windows btw..
This worked for me...
set the SSKEYLOG env: variable as normal in Linux.
just point it to your pefererd save location of the sslkey.log
windows system/advance/env vars/user variables.
add SSLKEYLOGfile with the path to your preferred save location C:/user/sslkey.log
close and your done here.
NSS_ALLOW_SSLKEYLOG=1 is what's missing from the Booleans in Firefox's advanced options.
its been also removed from the general release but is still in the dev ops version. just not listed.
download and install the dev ops version of Firefox
open a terminal start it from its exe if on Linux.
windows just open it from the icon.
go to the about:config
create a new Boolean with NSS_ALLOW_SSLKEYLOG=1 and set it to true.
quit
now create a new symbolic/icon link to the new dev version fire fox version
when you run Firefox from the terminal in Linux the sskeylog should be created and start populating.
run it from the task bar icon in Linux and it doesn't make or update the keylog (just in case you dont want it populating every time you open the browser).
in windows, you will have to disable the env var or it will keep populating every time you open any browser that supports sslkey logging.
on that note opera and vivaldi should work with no changes to the advanced option.
lastly.. open wireshark go to
edit/preferences/protocols/tls
and put the path to the sslkey.log in the pre master secret log box.
click ok.
close everything..
start Wireshark
start your browser (from terminal in linux).
you should start seeing sslkeylog start populating and see extra options for decryption in the tabs of Wireshark.

How to symbolicate crashes in Xcode 7.3?

Can you help me get my crashes symbolicated?
In Xcode 7.3, Window -> Organizer -> Crashes, I have crash reports from my latest TestFlight builds. They were built on this Mac, and all the archives with the corresponding dSYMs are in the Archives tab. The app is divided into a number of frameworks and the main app, and many are a mix of Swift and Objective C. In the crash log I can see the name of the frameworks and app listed correctly, but all the entries for my frameworks and app are in hex. UIKit is symbolicated just fine.
When I look in iTunes Connect, it says "Yes" to "Includes Symbols" and allows me to download the dSYMs. When building, the "Debug Information Format" option was set to "DWARF with dSYM". I tried setting "Strip Debug Symbols During Copy"
and "Strip Linked Product" to "No" to see if that made a difference. It didn't.
I cannot find the symbolicatecrash app on my system, not even in /usr/bin or /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/SharedFrameworks/DTDeviceKitBase.framework/Versions/A/Resources/symbolicatecrash, but I have an older Xcode 5 where I could grab it. However, it does not resolve the symbols anymore.
I have the same problem in Instruments, if I profile my app, UIKit is symbolicated just fine, but my frameworks and app only show hex.
I know there have been a lot of posts about this, but I have going through them a lot from the 7.3 beta period and until now and have not found a solution
The location of symbolicatecrash has changed in Xcode 7.3:

you find out that the App Store is responsible for symbolicating crash reports that come from TestFlight – not Xcode. And it appears the App Store is very unreliable at doing it.
Here's a workaround.
Go to the Archives tab in the "Organizer" window and make sure that for whatever build you need to symbolicate a crash report for, you have clicked the "Download dSYMS..." button over on the right side of the page. This is required if you are uploading in BitCode.
Attach an iOS device so that it appears in the "Devices" window.
Select the device and click "View Device Logs".
Now, go back to the Organizer Window, select the "Crashes" tab and select one of the crashes that did not get symbolicated.
Right-click on it and select "Show in Finder".
Right-click on the revealed .xccrashpoint bundle and select "Show Package Contents".
Drill down into DistributionInfos -> all -> Logs.
Drag any of the .crash files into the left side of the "View Device Logs" pane open in the Devices window.
Wait a second or two for Xcode to symbolicate the crash.
Same here. Having a hard time finding the symbolicatecrash after upgrading to 7.3.

I do not upload symbols with my application, so the App Store cannot symbolicate for me. I used the following workaround to symbolicate all of the crashlogs that XCode downloads from the store. These instructions are for XCode 8. The paths for the symbolicate crash app will vary from version to version of XCode but the ideas should be the same in each version.
Place your symbols where the symbolicator can find them: Place your symbols (.dsym) file in your Archives directory. You can find this by going to Organizer, context clicking on an archive and choosing "show in finder". Navigate up to the Archives directory (e.g. /Users/USERNAME/Library/Developer/Xcode/Archives) and place your dsym file there. It can be in other locations as well, it's just that I've verified that this one works.
Download the crash logs: In XCode, make sure that you've downloaded the crashlogs for the build you want to symbolicate (Organizer->Crashes, click on your app and then choose the version of your app in the panel to the right of the list of apps).
Locate the crash logs on disk: In the panel that has the App Version and build number, context click on one of the crashes and choose "Show in Finder". Navigate up to the "Crashes Folder" and note this location e.g.: /Users/USERNAME/Library/Developer/Xcode/Products/com.company-name.Your-App/VERSION/Crashes
Setup DEVELOPER_DIR for symbolicatecrash on the command line: Open a terminal window and CD to the crashes directory from step 3 and set the DEVELOPER_DIR like this: cd /Users/USERNAME/Library/Developer/Xcode/Products/com.companyname.Your-App/VERSION/Crashes/
export set DEVELOPER_DIR=/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer
(this should be the location of the "Developer" directory inside of your XCode app bundle).
Locate the symbolicatecrash script: symbolicatecrash knows how to find your symbolicate crash logs using the dsym from step 1. Apple moves it around from version to version of xcode. You can find it like this: find /Applications/Xcode.app/ -name symbolicatecrash. In XCode 8, it is in /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/SharedFrameworks/DVTFoundation.framework/Versions/A/Resources/symbolicatecrash
Backup your crashes folder You may want to backup your crashes folder (/Users/USERNAME/Library/Developer/Xcode/Products/com.companyname.Your-App/VERSION/Crashes/)
Symbolicate all of your crashes: Be sure that you are still in the Crashes directory from step 4 and type

This symbolicates each .crash file into an output file and then copies that back over the original, unsymbolicated file.
View Crashes Return to the crashes organizer and view the symbolicated crashes

Programmatically installing a chrome extension to the default profile [duplicate]

I've written an extension for Google Chrome that will be released with the next version of our product. I want to understand what properties, paths for extraction, registry entries, etc. should I provide the installer of my product so that the end user doesn't have to install the extension on their own manually, and the installer does the complete job of installing the extension, and also notifies the user that the extension has been installed. As of now, the code that I have written is placed in a folder, and I use the "Load Unpackaged Extension" to load the extension. What should I do to achieve the aforementioned task?
Google's current policy on installing extensions via the registry (for Windows machines) is this:
Only extensions from the Google Extension Gallery (or Chrome Web Store - CWS) can be installed via the registry.

-This technique will still pop-up a msgbox to the user. its not completely silent.
-When using this technique, if the user subsequently removes the extension from her Chrome, the extension gets "blacklisted" on that chrome and will not re-auto-install until the user re-install it

How install crx Chrome extension via command line?

Currently, the only way to install a Chrome extension (while working in development) is to drag it from the desktop onto the browser and click "Add" on the popup window. I would prefer to make the whole process automatic. I currently build, package and sign my CRX programatically, but am stuck with the final manual step. Is this possible?
I tried creating my own URL from which to install the CRX (see here: After adding ExtensionInstallSources preference with my URL to Chrome Preferences, still won't allow installing ".crx" packaged app ) but this did not work.
I want this install to be permanent, not a temporary install that only lasts during the current run..
That's an old question, but you recently updated it, so..
There are no fully automated ways to do it besides Enterprise Policy, which only rarely applies. If that is not an option, you're out of luck. This was a security decision in 2014 by Chrome team, because malware that did that was rampant. Here's a latest post on this topic.
On a Windows machine, the Enterprise Policy force_install is the only no-confirmation one, but it requires a machine in a Windows Domain and admin rights in said domain to enable. I'm not 100% sure how it works on Linux/Mac, but here's a relevant FAQ.
There is a programmatic method of installing extensions, but it now only applies to extensions that are published in CWS (so that Google can pull the plug in case of abuse). It is described here, but will still require a manual approval from the user when the browser starts for the first time after this is added. That's how, for instance, various legitimate bundled extensions like Skype's Click-to-call are installed.
For unpacked extensions, you can run with the command line flag:
<path to chrome> --load-extension=<path to extension directory>
For installing a packaged extension in a .crx file, you can use the "external extensions" mechanism to automatically install from either an autoupdate url or a local path:

Two things of note:
-Because this mechanism is intended mostly for distribution to end-users and not for testing, there is a confirmation dialog that allows the user to opt in to the install.
-We may eventually be deprecating the local path based installs in places where we're enforcing the "must be from the webstore" restriction, and only support the autoupdate url (which must be the webstore update url) approach.

Re-enabling extension installs

I found the new change that you can't install Chrome extensions/userscripts without saving them and dragging them into Chrome quite annoying. As such I have set forth to revert this to the old way it was.
I read the documentation here: http://www.chromium.org/administrators/policy-list-3#ExtensionInstallSources that says to add a registry key and so I have done, as shown below. However when attempting to install an extension I still get an error that they can only be installed from the Chrome webstore. Did I add the registry entries wrong or something?

Instead of editing the registry, you can also make Chrome to behave in the old way via the --enable-easy-off-store-extension-install flag.
Under Windows, create a shortcut to your Chrome executable. Then edit the shortcut, and append --enable-easy-off-store-extension-install to "Target". See the screenshot below:
Some observations:
I've added the --enable-easy-off-store-extension-install flag after chrome.exe.
After starting Chrome, I visited a website that links to a .crx file that is not hosted in the Chrome web store.
Because of the flag, Chrome 20 doesn't show the "Extensions, apps, and user scripts can only be added from the Chrome Web Store" message any more. Instead (see bottom), Chrome asks me whether it's OK to install the extension - exactely as before.
This command line switch also works for Chromium/Chrome, under Linux and OSX.
If you ever find yourself in the situation where the --enable-easy-off-store-extension-install flag doesn't work (e.g. future version?) or you don't want to use it, then there is an alternative method.
You can install extensions with a plain vanilla install of Chrome by dragging .CRX extension files onto the Extensions panel in Settings.
