We have a database with all the dates and times stored in one column called timestamp. The format of the date/time in the column "timestamp" is as: 03 Aug 08:10am.
I would like to convert this (03 Aug 08:10am) to UNIX TIMESTAMP in MySQL and not PHP because we already have over 500 rows with this format: 03 Aug 08:10am.
I tried create a new INT column called new_timestamp and ran this query:
UPDATE table_name SET new_timestamp = UNIX_TIMESTAMP(timestamp);
However, it shows that 0 rows were affected.

The UNIX_TIMESTAMP() function requires a valid date/time format to convert correctly, so you need to convert your existing date/time format to a valid/recognised format (including the year) first. You can do this using MySQL's STR_TO_DATE() function, telling it what format you are passing in, and concatenating in a hard-coded year value as it's always 2016 in your case.
STR_TO_DATE(CONCAT('2016-', <your date/time value>), '%Y-%d %b %h:%i%p')
You can then use the UNIX_TIMESTAMP() function to convert that valid date to your unix timestamp and update all those records in a single step:
UPDATE table_name
SET new_timestamp =
UNIX_TIMESTAMP(STR_TO_DATE(CONCAT('2016-', timestamp), '%Y-%d %b %h:%i%p'));

You seem to be looking for the MySQL STR_TO_DATE function :
It takes a string str and a format string format. STR_TO_DATE() returns a DATETIME value if the format string contains both date and time parts, or a DATE or TIME value if the string contains only date or time parts.
So if the date coming out of your application is like '2019-5-6', to convert it to a MySQL date you need :
STR_TO_DATE('2019-5-6', '%Y-%c-%e')
In an INSERT statement :
INSERT INTO mytable VALUES(1, STR_TO_DATE('2019-5-6', '%Y-%c-%e'));
Tip :
%Y : Year as a numeric, 4-digit value
%c : numeric month name (0 to 12)
%e: day of the month as a numeric value (0 to 31)
The default way to store a date in a MySQL database is by using DATE. The proper format of a DATE is: YYYY-MM-DD. If you try to enter a date in a format other than the Year-Month-Day format, it might work but it won't be storing the dates as you expect.
In order to run a MySQL Insert command and add the current date into your table you can use MySQL's built-in function CURDATE() in your query.
An example of how to Insert a Date in MySQL using CURDATE
$query_auto = "INSERT INTO tablename (col_name, col_date) VALUE ('DATE: Auto CURDATE()', CURDATE() )";
Also, you can run a query to set the date manually

If the original data is not in MySQL Datetime format (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS), you cannot just change the column datatype from Varchar/Text to Date/Datetime. Otherwise, there will be an irreparable Data loss.
This will be a multi-step process. You will first need to convert the date string to MySQL date format (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS). We can use STR_TO_DATE() function for this.
Your sample date string (18-11-15 18:21:25) is basically in %y-%m-%d %T format. Following format specifiers can be used:
%d Day of the month as a numeric value (01 to 31)
%m Month name as a numeric value (00 to 12)
%y Year as a numeric, 2-digit value
%T Time in 24 hour format (hh:mm:ss)
The query to update the date would look as follows:
UPDATE invoices
SET created = STR_TO_DATE(created, '%y-%m-%d %T');
Now, you can use Alter Table to change the data type from Text type to Datetime.

The best thing to do here is to not store your dates as text. Assuming you have already done this, we can cope by calling STR_TO_DATE to generate a bona fide date:
SELECT
STR_TO_DATE(created, '%y-%m-%d %h:%i:%s') AS created_out
FROM yourTable;
Since the output you expect is standard date output, we can stop here and avoid also calling DATE_FORMAT to generate a different output.

You will need first to interchange the day with the year in the created column, as follows:
UPDATE invoices
SET created = CONCAT(SUBSTR(created, 7, 2), '-', SUBSTR(created, 4, 2), '-', SUBSTR(created, 1, 2));
Then, you convert the column to DATETIME, as follows:
ALTER TABLE invoices MODIFY created DATETIME;

The following query updates the table stores the date as 0000-00-00

I can always use DATE_FORMAT(DateCreated,'%m %d %Y') during select but is there a way to store date in that format.
The datatype of DateCreated is Date.

Do not modify the storage format of a date. The format for the date data type is ISO 8601 standard for a reason. You will lose the ability to perform most date functions elegantly (without first converting to the standard date format). You do the formatting when you run a query.
I've a timestamp field in my database in which data is inserted from python datetime module. I want to convert the timestamp to date and do some filtering. I can do this in python but instead I want to do this in sql query itself.
I tried this so far

This is converting to date but the from_unixtime is messing it to dates in 1969 instead of 2013.

Is ts the column name of the timestamp? If so, why are you putting it in single quotes? That makes it into a literal string.
MySQL date functions translate a literal string that isn't a timestamp, silently, into NULL. A NULL or zero UNIX timestamp refers to the beginning of the UNIX epoch, which is 1-Jan-1970 at midnight universal time. That's 19:00 on 31-Dec-1969 New York time. That is, I believe, where your 1969 stuff is coming from.
I have a table with the following columns:

Note 1: our server is in UTC time.
Note 2:The column start_date is a date field, not a timestamp field. Dec 2nd 2012 implicitly means "2012-12-02 00:00:00"
Note 3: The above table is actually multiple normalized tables, but for simplicity, I de-normalized it.
Note 4: I can put anything into the TZ table to make this easy.
I would like to select from my_table where start_date <= now()
However, this doesn't work because of timezone. If the current date/time is
Dec 1st Eastern at 9PM (which is Dec 2nd 1AM UTC), the above query will return both results,
but I really only want the 2nd one. This is further complicated by daylight savings.
Ideally, I would like a query that does the following:
select * from my_table where convert_to_utc_timestamp(start_date,tz) <= now()
The above method would convert start_date to a timestamp and then convert it to the right timezone.
How would I do this in SQL?
There are two functions you'll probably find useful.
The first is:
STR_TO_DATE(start_date,'%M %d,%Y')
That will get your string, in the specified format, converted to a MySQL DATE datatype.
If you have the mysql.time_zone_name et al. tables populated, you can use the function:
CONVERT_TZ()
(need to check that CONVERT_TZ takes a DATE and will return a DATETIME or TIMESTAMP, or include a time component in the string being converted to get a DATETIME, e.g.
STR_TO_DATE( CONCAT(start_date,' 00:00:00'),'%M %d,%Y %T')
Wrap that expression in the CONVERT_TZ() function, e.g.
CONVERT_TZ( datetime_expr ,'US/Eastern','GMT')
To make use of the values stored in your TZ column, those are going to need to match, or you need to come up with a way to match to, the values stored in the mysql.time_zone_name table.
