Centering a multi-line block while keeping text aligned left - html

I tried various different methods to no avail, including using text-align: center; on the <div> and display: inline-block; on the <p> and <h4>. Since the I have 3 different text tags inside the div I'm trying to align this only makes the text look centered and not aligned to the left.
#import url('https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.6/css/bootstrap.min.css');
.media-body {text-align: center;}
p {display: inline-block}
h4 {display: inline-block;}
<div id="j2" class="jumbotron">
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div id="block" class="col-sm-8 col-sm-offset-2">
<div class="media-body">
<p id="time">10:00 A.M.</p>
<h4 class="media-heading"><b>Meet & Greet</b></h4>
<p>Nametags, Swag, Refreshments</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>

This is the usual solution:
#block {
text-align: center;
}
.media-body {
display: inline-block;
text-align: left;
}
<div id="block">
<div class="media-body">
<p id="time">10:00 A.M.</p>
<h4 class="media-heading"><b>Meet & Greet</b></h4>
<p>Nametags, Swag, Refreshments</p>
</div>
</div>
But Bootstrap sets the property width: 10000px; to the .media-body class. Therefore, you need to redefine this property as width: auto;:
#import url('https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.6/css/bootstrap.min.css');
#block {
text-align: center;
}
.media-body {
display: inline-block;
text-align: left;
width: auto;
}
<div id="j2" class="jumbotron">
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div id="block" class="col-sm-8 col-sm-offset-2">
<div class="media-body">
<p id="time">10:00 A.M.</p>
<h4 class="media-heading"><b>Meet & Greet</b></h4>
<p>Nametags, Swag, Refreshments</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>

Vertical Align Center not working for div text alignment

I am trying to vertically align and I can not find the solution. I have read so many stack overflow questions and I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Here is my HTML:
<body>
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-12">
<form class="order-form">
<div class="row first-row">
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-2 v-middle">
<span>Order 123456789</span>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-2 v-middle">
<span>Order Date: 8/28/18</span>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-2 v-middle">
<span>Order Status: OP</span>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-2 v-middle">
<span>Ready Status: RD</span>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-4 v-middle">
<span>Facility 123 Dudley Chip-N-Saw</span>
</div>
</div>
</form>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</body>
and here is my SCSS:
$font-family: "roboto", "open-sans";
body {
font-family: $font-family;
padding-top: 5%;
.order-form {
text-align: center;
position: relative;
display: block;
label {
display: block;
}
.first-row {
font-size: 16px;
.v-middle {
display: inline-block;
vertical-align: middle;
}
}
}
}
I a using Bootstrap v3 so I can not use the alignment classes Bootstrap 4 provides. I am not sure what else is required for vertical align besides display being inline. I know vertical alignments do not work on block level items. Please help Thanks!
Here is my codepen: https://codepen.io/sazad/pen/BOZWOV
but Please shrink screen to make sure when the line breaks the text is vertically aligned middle. Thanks!
Your .v-middle elements inherit float from the col-.. elements, thats why you can't vertically align them. Simply add float: none to that class to fix it.
You will also have a problem with whitespaces in-between display: inline-block elements. A lot of ways to fix those, my favourite fix for those is adding font-size: 0 to parent.
Final code:
<body>
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-12">
<form class="order-form">
<div class="row first-row">
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-2 v-middle">
<span>Order 123456789</span>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-2 v-middle">
<span>Order Date: 8/28/18</span>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-2 v-middle">
<span>Order Status: OP</span>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-2 v-middle">
<span>Ready Status: RD</span>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-12 col-sm-4 v-middle">
<span>Facility 123 Dudley Chip-N-Saw</span>
</div>
</div>
</form>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</body>
$font-family: "roboto", "open-sans";
body {
font-family: $font-family;
padding-top: 5%;
.order-form {
text-align: center;
position: relative;
display: block;
label {
display: block;
}
.first-row {
font-size: 0;
.v-middle {
display: inline-block;
vertical-align: middle;
float: none;
font-size: 16px;
}
}
}
}
Also a small suggestion. Don't nest selectors that heavily (for ex. order-form doesn't need to be nested inside body).

Align content of boxes vertically in responsive grid (set same height for all boxes)

I am using a responsive grid and I want each box to have all its contents vertically aligned. Each box will have a different position of the content (structure). In this case (for now), I have two boxes and they work fine separately. When I include them in the grid, the grid is no longer responsive.
For example, the first box will look like this:
and the second box will look like this:
So, far... I have built the main grid and I am trying to align the items using the first box template. I am trying to find the best solution. I am guessing the change is related to the .example-feature-staggered-row:

I am trying to think of the best solution here. For example. the table might be a solution. Using two columns (for the first template). Each column will have two rows where the items (text and images) will be vertically aligned. The rows of the first column will have a sub-table. Each sub-table will have two columns. The first column will have the image. The second column will have two rows with the text. Is that a good idea? Or is it better to find a more responsive way to achieve that?
Separately, the boxes are fine. I just cannot make them work in the grid without problems (the height is not the same. If I make it the same, the content is not always vertically aligned).
With your current setup, you will need to add media queries at certain breakpoints to restyle the content.
You have giving a lot of elements fixed widths and set them to flex: 0 0 auto; which will stop them from shrinking below their given width.
Also, you could benefit from simplifying your code.
You can create this layout with flex containers. Below is a rough example of what this might look like.
.container {
display: -webkit-box;
display: -ms-flexbox;
display: flex;
-ms-flex-wrap: wrap;
flex-wrap: wrap;
}
.wrap {
display: -webkit-box;
display: -ms-flexbox;
display: flex;
-ms-flex-pack: distribute;
justify-content: space-around;
-webkit-box-align: center;
-ms-flex-align: center;
align-items: center;
-ms-flex-wrap: wrap;
flex-wrap: wrap;
width: calc(50% - 40px);
background: #e9f0e1;
min-height: 100px;
min-width: 100px;
margin: 20px;
}
.one {
background: #f09880;
}
.three {
background: #e9f0e1;
}
.content {
padding: 10px;
margin: 10px;
background: seagreen;
color: white;
}
#media screen and (max-width: 500px) {
.wrap {
display: block;
}
}
#media screen and (max-width: 360px) {
.container {
display: block;
}
.wrap {
width: calc(100% - 40px);
}
}
<div class='container'>
<div class='wrap one'>
<div class='item'>
Icon
</div>
<div class='item'>
Text
</div>
<div class='item'>
Text
</div>
</div>
<div class='wrap two'>
<div class='item'>
<div class='content'>
one
</div>
<div class='content'>
two
</div>
</div>
<div class='item'>
<div class='content'>
one
</div>
<div class='content'>
two
</div>
</div>
<div class='item'>
<div class='content'>
one
</div>
<div class='content'>
two
</div>
<div class='content'>
three
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class='wrap three'>
<div class='item'>
Icon
</div>
<div class='item'>
<div class='content'>
Text
</div>
<div class='content'>
Text
</div>
</div>
<div class='item'>
<div class='content'>
Text
</div>
<div class='content'>

</div>

How to center a <div>?

See my code at codepen
I'm trying to horizontally center the circle progress bar in the page, I tried setting margin: 0 auto; on the div, it didn't work. I, also, tried setting text-align: center on the parent div and setting the div to display: inline-block, no success as well.
This is the element in the HTML I'm trying to center:
<div class="row">
<div class="clearfix">
<div class="col-md-12">
<div class="timer"> <!-- this one should be centered -->
<div class="c100 p50 big">
<span>50%</span>
<div class="slice">
<div class="bar"></div>
<div class="fill"></div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
And this is the CSS I'm applying on the element:
.col-md-12{
width: 100%;
}
.timer{
width: 100%;
margin: 0 auto;
}
Remove float: left; or set it to none in .c100 css class.
.c100 {
float:none;
}
I think it should be like this.
<center>
<div class="row">
<div class="clearfix">
<div class="col-md-12">
<div class="timer"> <!-- this one should be centered -->
<div class="c100 p50 big">
<span>50%</span>
<div class="slice">
<div class="bar"></div>
<div class="fill"></div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</center>
Replace your existing CSS rules with:
.col-md-12 {
text-align: center;
}
.timer {
display: inline-block;
}
<div class="timer"> <!-- this one should be centered -->
.timer{
width: 100%;
margin: 0 auto;
}
It is centered. It is also 100% wide, so being in the center is the same as being left or right aligned. It takes up all the space.
You need to set a smaller width in order for it to noticeably appear in the center.
Remove float: left;from .c100 class to center the div.
If that's what you wanted:
CodePen example
I added:
.timer {display: flex}
and also added a new class to it's only child
.align {margin: 0 auto !important;}
as .c100 overrides margins.

CSS Nth-Child 3n hierarchy structure

With how my HTML is structure I am having hard time selecting 3n child. It doesn't seem even notice the 3n selector of class heroLetter, but if I use the 1n child selector the code notices the class, but it also selects every div. I am not sure how to call the 3n child selector with this structure of classes I have made.
Code:
.heroLetter {
float: left;
width: 48%;
margin-top: 150px;
text-align: center;
font-size: 600px;
color: #f5543a;
position: relative;
}
.windowWrapper .section .heroLetter:nth-child(3n) {
float: left;
width: 48%;
margin-top: 150px;
text-align: center;
font-size: 200px;
color: #f5543a;
position: relative;
}
<div class="wrapper">
<div id="section1" class="windowWrapper">
<div class="section group">
<h1 class="introH1">
<span class="Grand">GRAND</span>
<span class="Stand">STAND</span>
</h1>
<p class="introP">A new font.</p>
scroll down
</div>
</div>
<div id="section2" class="windowWrapper">
<div class="section group">
<div class="col span_6_of_12">
<h1>STORY</h1>
<p>Grandstand invokes</p>
</div>
<div class="heroLetter">
G
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div id="section3" class="windowWrapper">
<div class="section group">
<div class="col span_6_of_12">
<h1>PROCESS</h1>
<p>Grandstand invokes</p>
</div>
<div class="heroLetter">
S
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div id="section4" class="windowWrapper form">
<div class="section group">
<div class="col span_6_of_12">
<h1>BEAM</h1>
<p>Grandstand invokes</p>
</div>
<div class="heroLetter">
<div class="circle"></div>
a
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
The nth-child refers to children of the same parent only.
You could adjust your code to refer to the outer most common element.
Some css like this should help you:
.windowWrapper:nth-child(4n) .section .heroLetter {}
In this case it's the 4th windowWrapper since it contains your 3rd heroLetter

How to expand column height automatically and vertically align its contents?

I am trying to expand the height of first three col-md-1 divs to the rows maximum height which is expanded by two col-md-5, and also vertically align its contents. I am using grid system from bootstrap.
<div class="row load-container">
<div class="col-md-1">{{Id}}</div>
<div class="col-md-1"><img src="images/{{statusIcon Status}}" /></div>
<div class="col-md-1"><div class="info-bubble info-bubble-small middle-align {{statusClass}}">{{Class}}</div></div>
<div class="col-md-5 container">
<div class="row">{{From.Name}}</div>
<div class="row">{{From.City}} {{From.State}}, {{From.Zip}}</div>
<div class="row">{{pickupFormatted}}</div>
</div>
<div class="col-md-5 container">
<div class="row">{{To.Name}}</div>
<div class="row">{{To.City}} {{To.State}}, {{To.Zip}}</div>
<div class="row">{{deliveryFormatted}}</div>
<div class="row">{{expectedFormatted}}</div>
</div>
<div class="col-md-1">
{{Weight}}
</div>
<div class="col-md-2">
{{Distance.text}}
</div>
<div class="col-md-2">
{{Duration.text}}
</div>
<div class="col-md-4">
</div>
</div>
Edit:
Here is the method the sort-of works, except that the column widths are no longer affecting actual width.
.load-container {
padding: 5px;
display: table;
width: 100%;
}
.load-container [class*="col-"] {
float: none;
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
text-align: left;
}
Ninja-edit:
This seems to work now
.load-container [class*="col-"] {
float: none;
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
}
