how to use select along with insert query in MySQL? - mysql

Hi I'm a rookie to Mysql. I have table called course(c_id,c_name). I have inserted c_id and left c_name blank. Now how can I enter the c_name for that particular c_id using select statement inside the insert query ?

Use a simple update query, since you've already inserted the row. E.g. (replace x with your id):
update course set c_name = "your value" where c_id = x

Fill Column of SQL Table

I'm trying to fill a certain column of a SQL table with data from another table. I have a column named "size" in my table which should return the number of rows in the 2nd table where the id of both rows is the same. Is there a way to populate a SQL column based on a certain command? I would love to be able to fill the column based on this command:
SELECT count(*)
FROM second_table
WHERE id = "row_id";
Here is a sample database with the two tables:

Name

tiger

lion
2
gazelle
1
Here is the desired output for Table 2:
id
Number of Animals
1

I am trying to fill the Number of Animals column but do it automatically and dynamically when another row is added or deleted to Table 1, which is why I want the Select count(*) SQL statement as the code for the column.
One method is a correlated subquery:
update table1 t1
set size = (select count(*)
from table2 t2
where t2.id = t1.id
);
If you need to do this dynamically (as data is inserted), then you would need to use a trigger. However, I would suggest that you calculate the value as needed, unless there is a specific reason why you need to store it.
I guess you need something like this:
CREATE TRIGGER UpdateAnimalCountTable2
AFTER INSERT ON `Table1` FOR EACH ROW
begin
DECLARE NewCount int;
SELECT count(1)
INTO #NewCount
FROM Table1
WHERE Table1.id= NEW.id;
UPDATE Table2
SET NoOfAnimals = #NewCount
WHERE id = NEW.id;
END;
Above is the trigger which will be executed after every insert in Table1 and will update the count in Table 2 for ID which just got inserted in Table1.

Insert a row within another row while updating sql

UPDATE `users` SET `D1`='hello ['firstname']' WHERE id_user >= 3
I want to update the D1 column with "hello ['firstname']"
I want to fetch firstname from another column with same row number. and the above syntax is not working out. I'm new to ṭhis. Is this possible? or not?
You can use CONCAT for that purpose, and you can so combine strings together
UPDATE `users` SET `D1`= CONCAT('hello [',`firstname`,']') WHERE id_user >= 3
Do you want to construct a string with firstname -- the column -- in it?
If so:
UPDATE users
SET D1 = CONCAT('hello', firstname')
WHERE id_user >= 3;

Delete Duplicates from large mysql Address DB

I know, deleting duplicates from mysql is often discussed here. But none of the solution work fine within my case.
So, I have a DB with Address Data nearly like this:
ID; Anrede; Vorname; Nachname; Strasse; Hausnummer; PLZ; Ort; Nummer_Art; Vorwahl; Rufnummer
ID is primary Key and unique.
And i have entrys for example like this:
1;Herr;Michael;Müller;Testweg;1;55555;Testhausen;Mobile;012345;67890
2;Herr;Michael;Müller;Testweg;1;55555;Testhausen;Fixed;045678;877656
The different PhoneNumber are not the problem, because they are not relevant for me. So i just want to delete the duplicates in Lastname, Street and Zipcode. In that case ID 1 or ID 2. Which one of both doesn't matter.
I tried it actually like this with delete:

The complete table contains over 10Mio rows. The size is actually my problem. The mysql runs on a MAMP Server on a Macbook with 1,5GHZ and 4GB RAM. So not really fast. SQL Statements run in a phpmyadmin. Actually i have no other system possibilities.
You can write a stored procedure that will each time select a different chunk of data (for example by rownumber between two values) and delete only from that range. This way you will slowly bit by bit delete your duplicates
A more effective two table solution can look like following.
We can store only the data we really need to delete and only the fields that contain duplicate information.
Let's assume we are looking for duplicate data in Lastname , Branche, Haushummer fields.
Create table to hold the duplicate data
DROP TABLE data_to_delete;
Populate the table with data we need to delete ( I assume all fields have VARCHAR(255) type )
CREATE TABLE data_to_delete (
id BIGINT COMMENT 'this field will contain ID of row that we will not delete',
cnt INT,
Lastname VARCHAR(255),
Branche VARCHAR(255),
Hausnummer VARCHAR(255)

GROUP BY t1.Lastname, t1.Branche, t1.Hausnummer

Now let's delete duplicate data and leave only one record of all duplicate sets
DELETE Import_Daten
FROM Import_Daten LEFT JOIN data_to_delete
ON Import_Daten.Lastname=data_to_delete.Lastname
AND Import_Daten.Branche=data_to_delete.Branche
AND Import_Daten.Hausnummer = data_to_delete.Hausnummer
WHERE Import_Daten.id != data_to_delete.id;
DROP TABLE data_to_delete;
You can add a new column e.g. uq and make it UNIQUE.
ALTER TABLE Import_Daten
ADD COLUMN `uq` BINARY(16) NULL,
ADD UNIQUE INDEX `uq_UNIQUE` (`uq` ASC);
When this is done you can execute an UPDATE query like this
UPDATE IGNORE Import_Daten
SET
uq = UNHEX(
MD5(
CONCAT(
Import_Daten.Lastname,
Import_Daten.Street,
Import_Daten.Zipcode
)
)
)
WHERE
uq IS NULL;
Once all entries are updated and the query is executed again, all duplicates will have the uq field with a value=NULL and can be removed.
The result then is:
0 row(s) affected, 1 warning(s): 1062 Duplicate entry...
For newly added rows always create the uq hash and and consider using this as the primary key once all entries are unique.

Inserting Data into a Column within the same table

I would like to Populate the username field/column with the first letter of the survey_responders firstname concatenated with the last name of the survey responder.
Every time I run my code it gives me an error :
You can't specify target table 'survey_responders' for update in FROM clause"
Any help with what I'm doing wrong anyone?

UPDATE survey_responders SET username = CONCAT(LEFT(first_name,1), last_name);
You don't need to do the SELECT query that you did. In UPDATE command, in every row you can use all the columns that you have.

How to compare multiple parameters of a row column value?

how to write query for following request?
my table:
id designation
1 developer,tester,projectlead
1 developer
1 techlead
if id=1,designation="'developer'"
Then need to first,second records.Because 2 rows are having venkat.
if id=1,designation="'developer','techlead'" then need to get 3 records as result.
i wrote one service for inserting records to that table .so that i am maintaining one table to store all designation with same column with comas.
By using service if user pass id=1 designation="'developer','techlead'" then need to pull the above 3 records.so that i am maintaining only one table to save all designations

You need to use the boolean operators AND and OR in conjunction with LIKE:
IF empid = 1 AND (empname LIKE '%venkat%' OR empname LIKE '%vasu%')
The above example will return all rows with empid equals 1 and empname containing venkat or vasu.
Apparently you need to create that query based on the input from user, this is just an example of how the finally query should look like.
Edit: Trying to do this within SqlServer can be quite hard so you should really change your approach on how you call the stored procedure. If you can't do this then you could try and split your designation parameter on , (the answers to this question show several ways of how to do this) and insert the values into a temporary table. Then you can JOIN on this temporary table with LIKE as described in this article.
