I am working in a bootstrap project where i need some text to be centered vertically with another row. Obviously the two rows are not the same size hence the content size. Is there a way to solve this without escalating to flexbox or is this the way to go? Also i would like to maintain the responsiveness.
Fiddle: http://codepen.io/anon/pen/mPwxXa
HTML
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-lg-6 col-xs-12">
<img src="http://rack.2.mshcdn.com/media/ZgkyMDE1LzA5LzEzLzNjL2dvb2dsZXRodW1iLmIyNGE0LmpwZwpwCXRodW1iCTk1MHg1MzQjCmUJanBn/63126c72/af4/google-thumb.jpg" class="img-responsive"/>
</div>
<div class="col-lg-6 col-xs-12">
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
You can do this with Flexbox and media queries.
As for flexbox you can just use display: flex and align-items: center on parent element and that will be row in this case.
Now you just need to adjust min-width in media queries to be same as bootstrap breakpoints So for example if you are using col-sm-6 bootstrap class, then 768px is break point and you will use #media(min-width: 768px) { } in your media queries.
For col-sm- you can use #media(min-width: 768px) Fiddle
For col-md- you can use #media(min-width: 992px) Fiddle
For col-lg- you can use #media(min-width: 1200px) Fiddle
#media(min-width: 768px) {
.flex {
display: flex;
align-items: center;
}
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap-theme.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row flex">
<div class="col-sm-6">
<img src="http://rack.2.mshcdn.com/media/ZgkyMDE1LzA5LzEzLzNjL2dvb2dsZXRodW1iLmIyNGE0LmpwZwpwCXRodW1iCTk1MHg1MzQjCmUJanBn/63126c72/af4/google-thumb.jpg" class="img-responsive" />
</div>
<div class="col-sm-6 text-center">
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
Instead of Flexbox you can also get vertical-align with CSS Tables and again you have to adjust your queries with bootstrap breakpoints same as for flexbox. With tables you have to remove float from columns with float: none to get vertical-align.
#media(min-width: 768px) {
.row.display_table {
display: table;
}
.col-sm-6.left_cell, .col-sm-6.right_cell {
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
float: none;
}
img {
width: 100%;
}
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.5/css/bootstrap-theme.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row display_table">
<div class="col-sm-6 left_cell">
<img src="http://rack.2.mshcdn.com/media/ZgkyMDE1LzA5LzEzLzNjL2dvb2dsZXRodW1iLmIyNGE0LmpwZwpwCXRodW1iCTk1MHg1MzQjCmUJanBn/63126c72/af4/google-thumb.jpg" class="img-responsive" />
</div>
<div class="col-sm-6 right_cell text-center">
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
I don't want to be too simple, but you are wondering if flexbox is the way to go. Actually, at this time, it is.
The reason behind the text container is that you don't need to use text-align:center; to center your text if you don't want to, but it is still horizontal centered.
body {
padding: 2em;
}
#media (min-width: 1200px) {
.vcenter {
display: flex;
align-items: center;
}
.text {
display: inline-block;
position: relative;
left: 50%;
transform: translateX(-50%);
}
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.6/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row vcenter">
<div class="col-lg-6 col-xs-12 ">
<img src="http://rack.2.mshcdn.com/media/ZgkyMDE1LzA5LzEzLzNjL2dvb2dsZXRodW1iLmIyNGE0LmpwZwpwCXRodW1iCTk1MHg1MzQjCmUJanBn/63126c72/af4/google-thumb.jpg" class="img-responsive"/>
</div>
<div class="col-lg-6 col-xs-12">
<div class="text">
<p>This is some text some te xt some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
<p>This is some text some text some more text</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
You could create a div with relative position like:
<div style='position: relative; top: 50%; transform: translateY(50%); height:100%;'>
To encapsulate all the <p> tags and align middle. There are a lot of methods like (http://vanseodesign.com/css/vertical-centering/):
#parent {display: table;}
#child {
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
}
but with inline elements didn't work quite well. Note I change the col-lg-6 to col-sm-6, because in codepen you could see the 2 columns.
Extracted from here: https://davidwalsh.name/css-vertical-center
Here a working codepen: http://codepen.io/jpaulet/pen/bpRvyd?editors=1100
Hope it helps!

Good day, as the title says, I am having issues with aligning the text in the exact center of my image. I tried adding a class with the css vertical-align:middle with no effect. Also, I tried using the span class to surround the text that will be centered. Both the image and the text are encased in a bootstrap grid. Any help will be appreciated thank you.
HTML/Bootstrap:
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-md-3">
<img src="img/mission-mywhitecard.jpg" class="img-responsive align_text">
</div>
<div class="col-md-9 justify_text">
<span>
<h2 class="med_bg">OUR MISSION</h2>
<p class="mv_font">“To provide a mutually-beneficial platform for partners through high-quality, lower cost and friendly access to health, wellness and beauty.”</p>
</span>
</div>
</div>
</div>
CSS:
.align_text {
vertical-align: middle;
}
Considering you are using bootstrap4, you can achieve that using the class .align-items-center, or use display:flex as stated by others :)
img {
background: gray;
height: 250px;
display: block;
max-width: 100%;
}
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.1.3/css/bootstrap.min.css">
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row align-items-center">
<div class="col-3">
<img src="img/mission-mywhitecard.jpg" class="img-responsive align_text">
</div>
<div class="col-9 justify_text">
<h2 class="med_bg">OUR MISSION</h2>
<p class="mv_font">“To provide a mutually-beneficial platform for partners through high-quality, lower cost and
friendly access to health, wellness and beauty.”</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
I believe this produces what you ask for. It is using 2 flexboxes:
First one (.row) to put the image and text next to each other in a responsive way;
Second one (.col-md-9) to position the span in the center
html,
body {
width: 100%;
}
.row {
display: flex;
width: 100%;
}
.row>* {
flex: 1; /* Allow the flex items to grow and shrink */
}
.col-md-9 {
display: flex;
justify-content: center;
align-items: center;
}
<link href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.1.3/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-md-3">
<img src="https://via.placeholder.com/100x300" class="img-responsive align_text">
</div>
<div class="col-md-9">
<span>
<h2 class="med_bg">OUR MISSION</h2>
<p class="mv_font">“To provide a mutually-beneficial platform for partners through high-quality, lower cost and friendly access to health, wellness and beauty.”</p>
</span>
</div>
</div>
</div>
You can aslo use align-self-center in column div class without any height of image and other css also add larger image no design change when you use align-self-center in column div no need set image height
.align_text {
vertical-align: middle;
}
img {
max-width: 100%;
}
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.1.3/css/bootstrap.min.css">
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-md-3">
<img src="http://placekitten.com/1000/500" class="img-responsive align_text">
</div>
<div class="col-md-9 justify_text align-self-center">
<span>
<h2 class="med_bg">OUR MISSION</h2>
<p class="mv_font">“To provide a mutually-beneficial platform for partners through high-quality, lower cost and friendly access to health, wellness and beauty.”</p>
</span>
</div>
</div>
</div>
I have the following
<div class="row">
<div class="col-md-6">
<div class = "box-cell">
<p>
Slightly short text
</p>
</div>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<div class = "box-cell">
<p>
Text that<br>literally<br>spans<br>4 lines
</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
and css
.box-cell
{
position: relative;
margin: 3px;
border-style: groove ridge ridge groove;
border-width: 3px;
background-size: cover;
}
So the problem that I am facing is that one of the cells is usually taller than the other.IS there any way for me to equalize how much height each cell takes up?
Searching didn't yield me which property I can manipulate to get same height :(
Here is jsfiddle
However in this fiddle I can not get them to be side by side to prove my point
EDIT: I guess I didn't specify it properly. I would like to have the borders be as tall as the tallest cell. So all the examples provided here actually take out the borders and instead color the background. If I do that then yes it gives illusion of every cell being the same, but I would like there to be a border of same height.
I tried replicating what it sounds like you are looking for.
I would recommend you mess around with flexbox since it seems to do exactly what you are looking for.
<div class="myc">
<div class="col">
<p>Text of some sorts</p>
<p>Text of some sorts</p>

And for the CSS

1- you need to add text in span tag.
2- Or take text in one line .
The desired display is to have the text in the left column vertically centered (middle). I have not been able to achieve that. This is because the picture in the right column is taller than the 2 paragraphs of text. Interestingly, the orange div is only as high as the paragraphs.
The inline styles are only there for debug.
The design being used is responsive so I'm assuming setting a height in px will make it non-responsive.
Edit: The inline debug styles were misleading so have been removed

If you want for the two things to be the same height, you're running into a problem that has existed since float became a thing. This Stackoverflow Question is from 2009 and it's about the same thing. You can choose to use the method described in that post, which basically equates to setting the bottom margin to some crazy huge number in order to pull the bottom edge down but that gets hidden with a overflow div, like so. Unfortunately, this doesn't net you a vertical center on the text since the thing that's actually stretching all that height is the margin/padding of the box, not the inner height.
.vertical-align-center {
display: table;
height: 100%;
width: 100%;
}
.vertical-align-center .valign-center {
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
height: 100%;
}
.vertical-align-center > div {
padding-bottom: 200em;
margin-bottom: -200em;
}
.overflow-hidden {
overflow: hidden;
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.6/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<div style="background-color:blue;" class="row overflow-hidden">
<div style="background-color:orange; height:1000px;" class="col-xs-8 vertical-align-center">
<div style="background-color: green;" class="valign-center">
<p>First small paragraph with other elements in it</p>
<p>Second small paragraph with other elements in it</p>
</div>

<div class="col-xs-4">

Alternate
Now the next part is for display:flex, something more uncommon, and it isn't fully supported by all mainstream browsers yet. According to Can I Use a good chunk of browsers can use it, but for things like IE it's going to be buggy.
NOTE: This is going to override bootstrap's display:float and it may not be exactly what you would like to see. I will leave it to you to figure out the spacing. CSS Tricks has a really nice side-by-side for the flex-container and the flex-items.
.row.flex-override {
display: -ms-flex;

You had a few random little errors in your code, the biggest of which was you put height=100% in the inline style. It should read height:100%
Note: you don't really need the valign-center class, but it makes it a little bit more readable in my opinion.
Happy Coding.

I have a grid divided into 2. One side holds an image and the other side some text. Currently it looks as follows:
I want to make it look as follows:
I am looking to get rid of the black spot and center the text. There is no issue in centering it horizontally but unable to do it vertically to fit nicely in relation to the image. Please advice if there is any pre built class already available in bootstrap or I need to rewrite additional CSS.
The following are my current html and css.
HTML
<div class="col-md-6 custom-info">
<img src="img/test.jpg" class="img-responsive center-block">
</div>
<div class="col-md-6 custom-info text-center" style="text-align: left;">

<h3>View the menu.</h3>
</div>
CSS
.custom-info{
background-color: #c0d023;
padding: 30px;
}
After Editing:
You may try this.
HTML
<div class="row xclassrow">
<div class="col-md-6 custom-info">
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/VpelmxT.png?1" class="img-responsive center-block">
</div>
<div class="col-md-6 custom-info text-left">
<div class="content">
<h1>Discover Our Latest Colourful addition</h1>
<h3>Explore our range of text text text text.</h3>
</div>
<h3>View the menu.</h3>
</div>
CSS
.xclassrow{
background-color:#C0D123
}
.content {padding:40px 0px}
.custom-info{
background-color: #c0d023;
padding: 30px;
}
Hope this works. Do comeback if still any issue.!!
EDIT : Removed the xclass and wrap the content in a new class. Check DEMO
TLDR;
Use display:table with display:table-cell to accomplish vertical centering of elements.
For newer browser you can use flexbox. I will demonstrate both approaches here.
Old but secure way (may not work for you here)
What I do most of the time is define 2 helper classes called t and td
*This works if you have a defined height of the containing element
The code then looks something like this:
HTML
<div class="col-md-6 custom-info text-center" style="text-align: left;">
<div class="t">
<div class="td">
<h1>Discover Our Latest Colourful addition</h1>
<h3>Explore our range of text text text text.</h3>
<h3>View the menu.</h3>
</div>
</div>
</div>
CSS
.t {
display: table;
height: 100%;
}
.td {
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
height: 100%;
}
Jsfiddle
Old and even more secure way
Since you know that your 2 columns are 6+6 and that makes 12 columns total width.
Make 1 long element col-md-12 and make a table inside it (either with regular table elements or the helper classes i used in the above example.
HTML
<div class="col-12 specific-class">
<div class="t">
<div class="td">
<img src="http://static.adzerk.net/Advertisers/d936d243e9de4c989a6c95b031eb11d6.png" alt="">
</div>
<div class="td">
<h1>Discover Our Latest Colourful addition</h1>
<h3>Explore our range of text text text text.</h3>
<h3>View the menu.</h3>
</div>
</div>
</div>
CSS
.specific-class .td {
width: 50%;
background: rgba(0,0,0,.2);
}
.t { display: table; height: 100%; width: 100%; }
.td { display: table-cell; vertical-align: middle; height: 100%; }
Jsfiddle
Note: added vertical align to the image to remove small spacing under it

I really want full width colour blocks to represent different sections of my webpage.
I am using bootstrap 3 to build my website. The website is in a container from the standard bootstrap but I would liked some of the sections to be colouful blocks that span the full browser windows.
Does anyone know how this is done and can post an example please?
What you need to do is to place the container within another tag. The tag should be the one taking up the entire width of the page with css background attribute. In this case, I have chosen the html5 "section" tag. Below is an example. You can take a look at this jsfiddle
<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Bootstrap 3 - Full width coloured blocks</title>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.1/css/bootstrap.min.css">
<style type='text/css'>
.colored-block {
width: 100%;
padding: 30px 0px;
color: #fff;
}
.purple { background: purple; }
.green { background: green; }
.blue { background: blue; }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<section class="colored-block purple">
<div class="container">
<h1>Header 1</h1>
<p>Paragraph content goes here</p>
</div>
</section>
<section class="colored-block green">
<div class="container">
<h1>Header 2</h1>
<p>Paragraph content goes here</p>
</div>
</section>
<section class="colored-block blue">
<div class="container">
<h1>Header 3</h1>
<p>Paragraph content goes here</p>
</div>
</section>
</body>
</html>
Here is a jsfiddle
This should help you to understand your problem. 3 section made like red, green ,blue.
<div class="row">
<div class="col-md-4 ">
<p class=text-danger> red color</p>
</div>
<div class="col-md-4 ">
<p class=text-success> green color</p>
</div>
<div class="col-md-4 ">
<p class=text-primary> blue color</p>
</div>
</div>
Here is a jsfiddle, 3 columns, full height with background colors.
jsfiddle
CSS:
html,body,.container-fluid
{
height:100%;
}
.container
{
display:table;
width: 100%;
}
.row
{
height: 100%;
display: table-row;
}
.col-md-4, .col-xs-4
{
display: table-cell;
float: none;
}
.red{background:red;}
.green{background:green;}
.blue{background:blue;}
HTML
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="red col-xs-4 col-md-4">.col-xs-4 .col-md-4</div>
<div class="blue col-xs-4 col-md-4">.col-xs-4 .col-md-4</div>
<div class="green col-xs-4 col-md-4">.col-xs-4 .col-md-4</div>
</div>
</div>
You can easily achieve full-width coloured sections in Bootstrap by using 'container-fluid' instead of 'container'.
Example:
CSS:
.red{background:red;}
.green{background:green;}
