ECMAScript 6 (ES6) introduces a new type of literal, namely template literals. They have many features, variable interpolation among others, but most importantly for this question, they can be multiline.
A template literal is delimited by backticks:

Javascript doesn't have a here-document syntax. You can escape the literal newline, however, which comes close:

The whitespace at the beginning of each line can't be safely stripped at compile time; whitespace after the slash will result in tricky errors; and while most script engines support this, it is not part of ECMAScript.
Use string concatenation instead:

To keep oversight with complex or long multiline strings I sometimes use an array pattern:

ES20xx supports spanning strings over multiple lines using template strings:

You can have multiline strings in pure JavaScript.
This method is based on the serialization of functions, which is defined to be implementation-dependent. It does work in the most browsers (see below), but there's no guarantee that it will still work in the future, so do not rely on it.

Be careful with your minifier, though. It tends to remove comments. For the YUI compressor, a comment starting with /*! (like the one I used) will be preserved.
I think a real solution would be to use CoffeeScript.
ES6 UPDATE: You could use backtick instead of creating a function with a comment and running toString on the comment. The regex would need to be updated to only strip spaces. You could also have a string prototype method for doing this:

I came up with this very jimmy rigged method of a multi lined string. Since converting a function into a string also returns any comments inside the function you can use the comments as your string using a multilined comment /**/. You just have to trim off the ends and you have your string.

I solved this by outputting a div, making it hidden, and calling the div id by jQuery when I needed it.
e.g.

The two best answers in my opinion were:

That logs it correctly but it's ugly in the script file if str is nested inside functions / objects etc...:

My really simple answer with regex which logs the str correctly:

bar.`.replace(/\n +/g, '\n');
Please note that it is not the perfect solution but it works if you are sure that after the new line (\n) at least one space will come (+ means at least one occurrence). It also will work with * (zero or more).
You can be more explicit and use {n,} which means at least n occurrences.

So I recommend the working approach for Opera user JS users. Unlike what the author was saying:
It doesn't work on firefox or opera; only on IE, chrome and safari.
It DOES work in Opera 11. At least in user JS scripts. Too bad I can't comment on individual answers or upvote the answer, I'd do it immediately. If possible, someone with higher privileges please do it for me.

Updated for 2015: it's six years later now: most people use a module loader, and the main module systems each have ways of loading templates. It's not inline, but the most common type of multiline string are templates, and templates should generally be kept out of JS anyway.

Easiest way to make multiline strings in Javascrips is with the use of backticks ( `` ). This allows you to create multiline strings in which you can insert variables with ${variableName}.

ES6 allows you to use a backtick to specify a string on multiple lines. It's called a Template Literal. Like this:

Also do note that, when extending string over multiple lines using forward backslash at end of each line, any extra characters (mostly spaces, tabs and comments added by mistake) after forward backslash will cause unexpected character error, which i took an hour to find out

Please for the love of the internet use string concatenation and opt not to use ES6 solutions for this. ES6 is NOT supported all across the board, much like CSS3 and certain browsers being slow to adapt to the CSS3 movement. Use plain ol' JavaScript, your end users will thank you.

I'm using Prototype's PeriodicalUpdater to update a div with the results of an ajax call. As I understand it, the div is updated by setting its innerHTML.
The div is wrapped in a <pre> tag. In Firefox, the <pre> formatting works as expected, but in IE, the text all ends up on one line.
Here's some sample code found here which illustrates the problem. In Firefox, abc is on different line than def; in IE it's on the same line.

Setting innerHTML fires up an HTML parser, which ignores excess whitespace including hard returns. If you change your method to include the <pre> tag in the string, it works fine because the HTML parser retains the hard returns.
You can see this in action by doing a View Generated Source after you run your sample page:

You can see here that the hard return is no longer part of the content of the <pre> tag.
Generally, you'll get more consistent results by using DOM methods to construct dynamic content, especially when you care about subtle things like normalization of whitespace. However, if you're set on using innerHTML for this, there is an IE workaround, which is to use the outerHTML attribute, and include the enclosing tags.

Don't know if this has been suggested before, but the solution I found for preserving white space, newlines, etc when doing an innerHTML into a 'pre' tag is to insert another 'pre' tag into the text:

Seems I.E. does parse the text before doing the innerHTML. The above causes the parser to leave the text inside the additional 'pre' tag unparsed. Makes sense since that's what the parser is supposed to do. also works with FF.
It could also be rewritten 'the Python way', i.e.:

What is the regex expression to get the number 75.00?
Is it something like:

The dollar sign is a special character in regex, so you need to escape it with a backslash. Also, you only want to capture digits, so you should use character classes.
<td>\$(\d+[.]\d\d)<span
As the other respondent mentioned, regex changes a bit with each implementing language, so you may have to make some adjustments, but this should get you started.
I think you can go with /[0-9]+\.[0-9]+/.
[0-9] matches a single number. In this example you should get the number 7.
The + afterwards just says that it should look for more then just one number. So [0-9]+ will match with 75. It stops there because the character after 5 is a period.
Said so we will add a period to the regex and make sure it's escaped. A period usually means "every character". By escaping it will just look for a period. So we have /[0-9]+\./ so far.
Next we just to add [0-9]+ so it will find the other number(s) too.
It's important that you don't give it the global-flag like this /[0-9]+\.[0-9]+/g. Unless you want it to find more then just the first number/period-combination.
There is another regex you can use. It uses the parentheses to group the part you're looking for like this: /<td>\$(.+)<span/
It will match everything from <td>$ up to <span. From there you can filter out the group/part you're looking for. See the examples below.

As an alternative you could use a DOMParser.
Wrap your <td> inside a table, use for example querySelector to get your element and get the first node from the childNodes.
That would give you $75.00/.
To remove the $ and the trailing forward slash you could use slice or use a regex like \$(\d+\.\d+) and get the value from capture group 1.

I am working on my second Python scraper and keep running into the same problem. I would like to scrape the website shown in the code below. I would like to be ability to input parcel numbers and see if their Property Use Code matches. However, I am not sure if my scraper if finding the correct row in the table. Also, not sure how to use the if statement if the use code is not the 3730.
Any help would be appreciated.

There's no td with class "Property Use Code" in the html you're looking at - that is the text of a td. If you want to find that row, you can use
td = soup.find('td', text="Property Use Code")
and then, to get the next td in that row, you can use:
otherTd = td.find_next_sibling()
or, of you want them all:
otherTds = td.find_next_siblings()
It's not clear to me what you want to do with the values of these tds, but you'll want to use the text attribute to access them: your first_row is '3730' will always be False, because first_row is a bs4.element.Tag object here and '3730' is a str. You can, however, get useful information from otherTd.text == '3730'.
