CSS Drop-down menu: second level positioning? - html

So I'm working on a CSS drop down menu where the div container is revealed by a radio button and I have that working as I'd like.
However, I'd like to add a second level to my drop-down just like it (same width, positioning beneath parent, ect..) I have it revealing the second level when you click on the input, however, If the input is in the middle (in between two links) my first level's links move beneath my first level of sub-menu. Please help? I can't figure out how to keep it looking the same way it's just if that input has another sub menu I would like for it to drop down below the first.
My code:
/*CSS for Menu */
.menu {
position: fixed;

I can't find a way to transform the menu above in vertical menu like this one
enter image description here
I have done a bit of the basics to point you in the right direction. You can build on this to make it responsive, hamburger, etc...
The menu should have this format. The submenu is nested in the list element of the parent. The span in the parent is the button we click to open the submenu. Each submenu parent has a corresponding span with a unique incremental id.
<div class="sidemenu">
<ul class="top">
<li>Home</li>
<li class="toggle">Jeans<span id="span1" onclick="openSub(1)">+</span>
<ul id="sub1">
<li>Wide</li>
<li>Straight</li>
<li>Loose</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li class="toggle">Shorts<span id="span2" onclick="openSub(2)">+</span>
<ul id="sub2">
<li>Sweet<span id="span3" onclick="openSub(3)">+</span>
<ul id="sub3">
<li>Jersey1</li>
<li>Jersey2</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Denim</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Skirts</li>
<li>Blazers</li>
</ul>
</div>
We will have to use JS to open and close the submenus when the correct span is clicked.
The first 6 lines hide the submenus by default when the page is loaded.
The openSub() function takes a number representing the submenu we want to open (1 for jeans, 2 for shorts, etc...)
The function then identifies the submenu we want to open, and toggles it to display. The next line changes the text of the span from "+" to "-" to represent an open submenu. If the span is clicked again, the submenu is closed and the text goes back to its default.
var toggle = document.getElementById("sub1");
toggle.style.display = "none";
var toggle = document.getElementById("sub2");
toggle.style.display = "none";
var toggle = document.getElementById("sub3");
toggle.style.display = "none";
function openSub(caller) {
var toggle = document.getElementById("sub"+caller);
toggle.style.display = toggle.style.display === 'none' ? '' : 'none';
document.getElementById("span"+caller).textContent = document.getElementById("span"+caller).textContent === "+" ? '-' : '+';
}
CSS used mostly for styling:
.sidemenu {
width: 250px;
height: 100vh;
background: lightblue;
}
ul.top {
list-style-type: none;
}
ul.top li {
width: 100%;
height: auto;
min-height: 50px;
margin: 10px 0;
padding: 20px 0 0 10px;
}
ul.top li span {
float: right;
}
#sub1, #sub2, #sub3 {
margin-top: 25px;
padding-left: 15px;
}
li {
width: 100%;
height: 50px;
}
span {
padding-right: 25px;
}

CSS process flow arrows - bad formatting?

I modified 3 different peoples code to make css arrows and I think I made it more complicated than it needs to be. Any CSS expert than can help me clean this up?
I can't seem to modify padding and other attributes to get this where I want it within the divs.

My arrows display nicely but I am having difficulty adjusting the padding to 0. I've tried the #, the ul class, the il class and I am a bit baffled why I cannot remove the 10px (I believe its the padding).
There is also a faintly darker border on the left side of the triangular portion of the arrows, if you look closely, that I'd like to have match the color exactly.

Dropdown works but when I click it doesn't go to the subpage. Anticipating the question, I don't want to use JavaScript. Buttons without dropdown menu works. If this cannot be fixed, could someone sent me a menu in similar style without JavaScript.

Instead of using a button, I used input of type checkbox to style the dropdown when its open and remove the style when its closed. button won't work because they require either JavaScript to add functions or be inside a form element (to act as a submit button which is not what you want here).

navigation drop down displays too far left

I have been working on fixing this but cannot figure out what I am missing. I would like for drop down list to show right below its parent. The list shows but all go to far left and forces the remaining nav items to drop down to another line. i have included a snippet for what is currently looks like and an image of what I want it to look like. Also, I have been trying to figure out how to add down fa fa-caret to nav items with drop down list. Please help!

You can achieve this by first making the div.list element into an absolute positioned. The 'display:block' property was pushing all the other content down to the next row because the block element was taking up space.
As you see now the list is no longer pushing the content down but now it is not aligned to the correct nav item. We are also going to add a left:0 so that the div.list is to the left of the parent property.
Now the parent property needs a position of relative so that the left:0 on the child element is being positioned relative to the parent element.
.dropdown:hover .list {
display: block;
position: absolute;
left: 0;
}
.navbar li {
border-left: solid 2px #000000;
display: inline;
list-style-type: none;
width: 800px;
padding: 0;
position: relative;
}
The problem with your CSS code is, you missed to add position: relative and position: absolute to the .dropdown and .list selectors, which is compulsory to create dropdown. Try this code.
.navbar {
background: linear-gradient(#9E0A0C, #EBEBEB);
padding: 10px;
border-top: solid 1px #000000;
}
.navbar a {
text-decoration: none;
color: #ffffff;
font-weight: bolder;
font-size: 20px;
text-transform: uppercase;
padding: 3px 5px;
margin: auto;
/*float: left; may need to be removed to show borders*/
display: inline;
}
.navbar ul {
padding: 0;
margin-top: 0;
width: auto;
}
.navbar li {
border-left: solid 2px #000000;
display: inline;
list-style-type: none;
width: 800px;
padding: 0;
}
.navbar a:active {
background-color: #000000;
}
.navbar li:hover > a {
background-color: #ddd;
color: black;
}

How to hover the complete row in css?

I have a screenshot as shown below which I have replicated in HTML, CSS and JS.
I have created the fiddle for the above screenshot. The above screen-shot portion is at the extreme right in the fiddle. On clicking three dots, the drop-down menu appears.
The HTML and CSS codes which I have used in order to create the drop-down is:
HTML:
<div class="nav-top-searchbar">
<form>
<span class="fa fa-search searchicon fa-lg" aria-hidden="true"></span>
<input type="text" name="search">
<div style="">
<img tabindex="1" src="https://s9.postimg.org/d6s4xvykv/Ellipsis.png" id="ellipsis">
<div class="dropdown">
<li>View Status<i class="fa fa-angle-down" aria-hidden="true"></i></li>
<li>Release Bills</li>
<li>Add Attendee</li>
<li>Export as</li>
<li>View in Google Sheets</li>
<li>Send Notifications</li>
</div>
</div>
</form>
</div>
CSS:
// General CSS
.nav-top-searchbar {
position: relative;
}
#ellipsis {
top: 12px;
position: absolute;
right: 43px;
cursor: pointer;
}
#ellipsis:focus {
outline: none;
}
#ellipsis:focus+.dropdown {
display: block;
}
input[type=text] {
width: 100%;
background: #10314c;
}
.dropdown {
background-color: #FFFFFF;
display: none;
padding-left: 2%;
position: absolute;
/* height: 150px; */
right: 0;
width: 200px;
z-index: 10;
list-style-type: none;
padding-top: 25px;
padding-bottom: 25px;
box-shadow: 0 0 15px #888;
top: 2px;
}
.searchicon {
float: left;
margin-top: -20px;
position: relative;
top: 26px;
left: 8px;
color: white;
border: 1px solid #FFFFFF;
z-index: 2;
padding: 3px;
}
.dropdown a {
color: #676767;
font-weight: bold;
font-size: 14px;
}
.dropdown li:hover {
background-color: #EDEDED;
}
Problem Statement:
In my fiddle, the hover doesn't cover the entire row. It only covers 80% of the row. I am wondering what changes do I need to make in the above CSS codes so that the hover covers the entire row.
You have padding on your dropdown container:
.dropdown{
padding-left: 2%;
}
This space is unusable by the child list items. Put the padding on the list items instead:
.dropdown li{
padding-left: 2%;
}
https://jsfiddle.net/nc2djn5p/94/
This should do the trick: https://jsfiddle.net/hp0hxoL3/
.dropdown {
background-color: #FFFFFF;
display: none;
padding-left: 2%;
position: absolute;
/* height: 150px; */
right: 0;
width: 200px;
z-index: 10;
list-style-type: none;
padding-top:25px;
padding-bottom:25px;
box-shadow: 0 0 15px #888;
top: 2px;
list-style: none;
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
}
.searchicon {
float: left;
margin-top: -20px;
position: relative;
top: 26px;
left: 8px;
color: white;
border: 1px #FFFFFF;
z-index: 2;
}
.dropdown a
{
color: #676767;
font-weight: bold;
font-size: 14px;
}
.dropdown li {
padding: 8px;
}
.dropdown li:hover
{
background-color: #EDEDED;
}
It doesn't match exactly the example, but it's close enough.
Your div class="dropdown" has a left padding of 2%. You will need to set it to 0.
As David said, set the padding in .dropdown li, instead of .dropdown
