It can make a modal popup window with just HTML and CSS? - html

I would be interested to know if you can make a modal pop-up window just using HTML and CSS without JQuery.
Does anyone know such a simple example?
Thanks in advance!

A modal with only HTML and CSS no jQuery or javascript

Yes, it is possible.
You can use the :target pseudo selector to show a modal.
Here's an example including some transitions as well (code combined from shehary's codepen example and http://tympanus.net/Development/ModalWindowEffects):
body {
background-color: #e74c3c;
}
a {
background-color: #c0392b;
color: #fff;
text-align: center;
width: 200px;
height: 50px;
line-height: 50px;
text-decoration: none;
border-radius: 2px;
}
a:hover {
background-color: #a5281b;
}
body > a {
display: block;
position: absolute;
left: 50%;
top: 50%;
transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
}
.md-modal {
position: fixed;
top: 50%;
left: 50%;
width: 50%;
max-width: 630px;
min-width: 320px;
height: auto;
z-index: 2000;
visibility: hidden;
transform: translateX(-50%) translateY(-50%);
}
.md-modal:target {
visibility: visible;
}
.md-overlay {
position: fixed;
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
visibility: hidden;

opacity: 0;
background: rgba(143,27,15,0.8);
transition: all 0.3s;
}
.md-modal:target ~ .md-overlay {
opacity: 1;
visibility: visible;
}
/* Content styles */
.md-content {
color: #fff;
background: #e74c3c;
position: relative;
border-radius: 3px;
margin: 0 auto;
}
.md-content h3 {

background: rgba(0,0,0,0.1);
border-radius: 3px 3px 0 0;
}
.md-content > div {

}
.md-modal:target .md-content {

<div class="md-modal" id="modal">

If you don't feel comfortable using visibility: hidden you can use display: none instead. But you better remove the transitions in that case (visibility can be used in a transition, display can't).

text won't show up when hovering

For my website I want to use a hover function that shows text once hovering over an imgae with the mouse.
Because I want to implement multiple pictures I used a table whichin each td represents one image.
My problem is that once hovering, the overlay shows but there is no text displayed
I'm a complete beginner in html and css, so if there is anything else I can do different and more efficiently, feel free to let me know.
.container {
position: relative;
width: 50%;
}
.moon {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
.overlay {
position: relative;
top: 0;
bottom: 0;
left: 0;
right: 0;
height: 300px;
width: 300px;
opacity: 0;
transition: .5s ease;
background-color: white;
}
.container:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.text {
color: blue;
font-size: 20px;
position: absolute;
top: 50%;
left: 50%;
-webkit-transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
-ms-transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
text-align: center;
}
.mr {
position: relative;
float: left;
width: 300px;
padding-left: 40px;
}
.mr:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.plant {
position: relative;
width: 300px;
padding-left: 40px;
padding-right: 120px;
float: left;
}
.plant:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.karteone {

.karteone:hover {

filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.kartetwo {
position: relative;
float: left;
width: 300px;
padding-top: 39.5px;
padding-left: 40px;
}
.kartetwo:hover {

You could use tooltip class from css. This will display the tooltip text while hovering.
.tooltip {
position: relative;
display: inline-block;
border-bottom: 1px dotted black;
}
.tooltip .tooltiptext {
visibility: hidden;
width: 120px;
background-color: black;
color: #fff;
text-align: center;
border-radius: 6px;
padding: 5px 0;
/* Position the tooltip */
position: absolute;
z-index: 1;
}
.tooltip:hover .tooltiptext {
visibility: visible;
<div class="tooltip">Hover over me
<span class="tooltiptext">Tooltip text</span>
</div>
If you want the .overlay to appear on .container:hover, then the code sould be: .container:hover .overlay, like so:
.container {
position: relative;
width: 50%;
}
.moon {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
.overlay {
position: relative;
top: 0;
bottom: 0;
left: 0;
right: 0;
height: 300px;
width: 300px;
opacity: 0;
transition: .5s ease;
background-color: white;
}
.container:hover .overlay{
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.text {
color: blue;
font-size: 20px;
position: absolute;
top: 50%;
left: 50%;
-webkit-transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
-ms-transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
text-align: center;
}
.mr {
position: relative;
float: left;
width: 300px;
padding-left: 40px;
}
.mr:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.plant {
position: relative;
width: 300px;
padding-left: 40px;
padding-right: 120px;
float: left;
}
.plant:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.karteone {
position: relative;
width: 300px;
padding-top: 40px;
}
.karteone:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.kartetwo {
position: relative;
float: left;
width: 300px;
padding-top: 39.5px;
padding-left: 40px;
}
.kartetwo:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
<body>
<div class="Arbeitsprobe">
<h2 class="myworksample">My Work Samples.</h2>

Or apply before and/or after in the CSS, like this:
.container {
position: relative;
width: 50%;
}
.moon {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
.overlay {
position: relative;
top: 0;
bottom: 0;
left: 0;
right: 0;
height: 300px;
width: 300px;
opacity: 0;
transition: .5s ease;
background-color: white;
}
.container:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.text {
color: blue;
font-size: 20px;
position: absolute;
top: 50%;
left: 50%;
-webkit-transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
-ms-transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
text-align: center;
}
.mr {
position: relative;
float: left;
width: 300px;
padding-left: 40px;
}
.mr:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.plant {
position: relative;
width: 300px;
padding-left: 40px;
padding-right: 120px;
float: left;
}
.plant:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.karteone {
position: relative;
width: 300px;
padding-top: 40px;
}
.karteone:hover {
opacity: 0.6;
filter: alpha(opacity=10);
}
.kartetwo {
position: relative;
float: left;
width: 300px;
padding-top: 39.5px;
padding-left: 40px;
}
.kartetwo:hover {

}

Why does the opacity not work when I hover over the square?

When I hover over the square, I want the text "MENU" to go and "Google" and "Youtube" to appear. I gave the opacity value for it. "MENU" text disappears but other texts are not visible. Why is Youtube and Google text not showing?
I gave visibility: visible and visibility: hidden instead of opacity but I still get the same result. Am i selecting the wrong div's?
CSS body {
background-color: aquamarine;
}
.square {
width: 100px;
height: 100px;
border-radius: 10px;
background-color: azure;
position: relative;
transition: 1s transform;
}
.square:hover {
transform: scale(4);
}
.div1::after {
position: absolute;
content: "MENU";
right: 27px;
top: 40px;
}
.square:hover div:nth-child(1) {
opacity: 0;
}

</div>
If you have added content using after , then add after in those hover also to work the way you want.
That is use .square:hover div:nth-child(2):after instead of .square:hover div:nth-child(2) only
It works like this see below snippet :
body {
background-color: aquamarine;
}
.square {
width: 100px;
height: 100px;
border-radius: 10px;
background-color: azure;
position: relative;
transition: 1s transform;
}
.square:hover {
transform: scale(4);
}
.div1::after {
position: absolute;
content: "MENU";
right: 27px;
top: 40px;
}
.square:hover div:nth-child(1) {
opacity: 0;
}
.div2::after {
content: "- Google";
position: absolute;
bottom: 25px;
right: 5px;
font-size: 10px;
border: 2px solid grey;
padding: 2px;
opacity: 0;
}
.square:hover div:nth-child(2):after {
opacity: 1;
}
.div3::after {
content: "- Youtube";
position: absolute;
bottom: 2px;
right: 5px;
font-size: 10px;
border: 2px solid grey;
padding: 2px;
opacity: 0;
}
.square:hover div:nth-child(3):after {
opacity: 1;
}
<div class="square">
<div class="div1"></div>
<div class="div2"></div>
<div class="div3"></div>
</div>
I changed your code a bit. See if this does what you need:
I added transform-origin: top left; to prevent the scaling from happening in all directions which caused some of the element to be displayed outside of the viewport.
I got rid of the :after pseudo-elements as they did not contribute to the desired outcome and only complicated things (in my opinion).

CSS hover effect doesn't work over picture

I'm trying to get the border on my button to appear, it works perfectly with solid background colors but not with a image . You can see the border when clicking on the button but not when mouse over it.
I just want the border to be visible.

Just add a z-index to your border:
.shrink-border {
background-color: transparent;
color: #1b1b20;
z-index: 0; /* <--- Add this */
}

CSS Skill Bar Animation

I am trying to create a skill bar where the background color of the progress slides in but the label for the Skill bar stays in the same place.
.skill-container * {
box-sizing: border-box;
}
.skill-container {
width: 100%;
border-radius: 5px;
background-color: lightgray;
margin: 20px 0;
overflow: hidden;
}
.skill-container .skill {
display: inline-block;
text-align: left;
color: white;
padding: 10px 0 10px 4px;
border-radius: inherit;
background-color: #312E81;
white-space: nowrap;
position: relative;
animation: animateLeft 1s ease-out;
}
#keyframes animateLeft {
from {
left: -100%
}
to {
left: 0
}
}
.skill-container .skill.skill-level-70 {
width: 70%
}
<div class="skill-container">
<span class="skill skill-level-70">CSS</span>
</div>
So far the animation works well, but the only thing I need to figure out is how to keep the text (CSS) on the left and animate the sliding of the background color to show the progress
Use a pseudo element for the background:
.skill-container .skill {
color: white;
background-color: lightgray;
margin: 5px 0;
padding: 10px 0 10px 4px;
overflow: hidden;
border-radius: 5px;
white-space: nowrap;
position: relative;
z-index:0;
}
.skill-container .skill::before {
content: "";
position: absolute;
background-color: #312E81;
border-radius: inherit;
z-index: -1;
top: 0;
bottom: 0;
left: 0;
animation: animateLeft 1s ease-out;
}
#keyframes animateLeft {
from {
transform: translateX(-100%);
}
}
.skill-container .skill.skill-level-70::before {
width: 70%
}
.skill-container .skill.skill-level-40::before {
width: 40%
}
.skill-container .skill.skill-level-100::before {
width: 100%
}
<div class="skill-container">
<div class="skill skill-level-100">CSS</div>
<div class="skill skill-level-70">HTML</div>
<div class="skill skill-level-40">PHP</div>
</div>
You can optimize with CSS variables:
.skill-container .skill {
color: white;
background-color: lightgray;
margin: 5px 0;
padding: 10px 0 10px 4px;
overflow: hidden;
border-radius: 5px;
white-space: nowrap;
position: relative;
z-index:0;
}
.skill-container .skill::before {
content: "";
position: absolute;
background-color: #312E81;
border-radius: inherit;
z-index: -1;
top: 0;
bottom: 0;
left: 0;
width:var(--l,0%);
animation: animateLeft 1s ease-out;
}
#keyframes animateLeft {
from {
transform: translateX(-100%);
}
}
<div class="skill-container">
<div class="skill" style="--l:100%">CSS</div>
<div class="skill" style="--l:70%">HTML</div>
<div class="skill" style="--l:40%">PHP</div>
</div>

How to create a responsive hover for my pictures?

I want to make a responsive hover for my pictures but it's not working...
When I add the code to hover, my images lose responsiveness.
This is my html code:
<div class="col-xs-4 col-sm-4 col-md-4 col-lg-4">
<div class="thumbnail">
<div class="media">
<img class="media__image" src="img/06_team.png" alt="">
<div class="media__body">
<h2>asfafs</h2>
<p>asfkasf</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
And this is my CSS:
.media {
display: inline-block;
position: relative;
vertical-align: top;
}
.media__image { display: block; }
.media__body {
background: rgba(41, 128, 185, 0.7);
bottom: 0;
color: white;
font-size: 1em;
left: 0;
opacity: 0;
overflow: hidden;
padding: 3.75em 3em;
position: absolute;
text-align: center;
top: 0;
right: 0;
-webkit-transition: 0.6s;
transition: 0.6s;
}
.media__body:hover { opacity: 1; }
.media__body:after,
.media__body:before {
border: 1px solid rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.7);
bottom: 1em;
content: '';
left: 1em;
opacity: 0;
position: absolute;
right: 1em;
top: 1em;
-webkit-transform: scale(1.5);
-ms-transform: scale(1.5);
transform: scale(1.5);
-webkit-transition: 0.6s 0.2s;
transition: 0.6s 0.2s;
}
.media__body:before {
border-bottom: none;
border-top: none;
left: 2em;
right: 2em;
}
.media__body:after {
border-left: none;
border-right: none;
bottom: 2em;
top: 2em;
}
.media__body:hover:after,
.media__body:hover:before {
-webkit-transform: scale(1);
-ms-transform: scale(1);
transform: scale(1);
opacity: 1;
}
.media__body h2 { margin-top: 0; }
.media__body p { margin-bottom: 1.5em; }
