Chrome Forcing HTTPS - google-chrome

Chrome is forcing https (as well as adding https to every internal link) to everything on my site, even though I have https support disabled/don't want to use it.
This occurred after I went to my site's cpanel (which requires you go through https). I changed no settings, and after that Chrome forces it. Only occurring on Chrome (firefox is working fine), and only on one computer.
Of course, I tried restarting, clearing cache/cookies as well as going to chrome://net-internals and deleting the domain from HSTS. Nothing works.

I had the same issue and to all odds it had something to do with my website itself. In my case I'm running WordPress & WooCommerce on my site and it seems like by deactivating WooCommerce my issue was solved. Still not sure how to properly fix this since as soon as I activate WooCommerce again the same issue re-appears. However, at least I know now where the issue is coming from and can dig around further.

I noticed the same issue with WooCommerce 2.3. Earlier versions don't have the same issue. My workaround was to load my site using Internet Explorer {the horror}.

Caching? div concerning images don't work on pc's that opened site first 3 hours after upload

Hi I'm kinda stuck on idea's to try to solve my problem since I don't have much experience concerning caches.
I'm currently working on this site of a business partner of me.
I got his host, username and password so I'm litterary working as him using Filezilla.
I downloaded the entire site content from filezilla into a desktopfolder.
I made a copy of it to work in and from there I made some changes in the .html and .css files.
In offline mode, everythings works perfectly as I want it.
Then I deleted the the sitecontent in Filezilla and replaced it with my changes.
Now the weird parts happen.
When I open the site online without www. prefix it works great
when I open the site online with www. prefix I can't see the images that are
placed within div's that purely concern the image
When a pc opened the site in the first 3 houres it was online, the div's don't
work
Also later on that specific pc can't make the div's to work
Pc's that opened the site only after these 3 houres have no problem at all
I've tried replacing the stylesheet and wait a couple hours, but caches seem to be made. and the result stays the same.
However this is no problem for the avarage customer since for them the site works, you can see what a hell this may be for me as developer and the owner, who offcourse opened the site right after I put it online.
Any suggestions might be usefull.
In most of the browsers you can use F12 shortcut to see the developer tools. In Network tab you can see all files that are currently being loaded. You can see there if the file is being loaded from the server or from the local machine.
By pressing CTRL+F5 (in Chrome and think in Firefox too) you are forcing cache to refresh.
If the PC is still loading in a cached version of the site, you can refresh the page and delete the cache by holding Control + F5.
Seems like I found the source of the problem.
I was using the css from a bought template which has some coding that malfunctions when ftp-uploading using ASCII
Uploading Binary solves the problem
The reason the did work on some computers was that they had the old css still cached. which was earlyer uploaded in binary instead of the same css files i uploaded in ASCII.

How to avoid Wechat warning about visiting an external page?

I have a site hosted on AWS S3, with CDN managed by Cloudflare. For most purposes the site works fine, but when I try to share it through the social media app WeChat, I get a warning (pictured below) and then the site doesn't render properly. This doesn't happen consistently, but when the warning appears, then the site fails to load properly.
My first line of thought was that the problems might be that the different settings of S3 compared to a more standard Apache server were triggering some security issue in WeChat, and that Cloudflare might fix the problem, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.
Removing Google Analytics and all CDN-ified resources also doesn't seem to have made any difference.
Any thoughts or input on either weirdness in the WeChat browser's rendering rules or why S3 might be triggering a warning would be greatly appreciated. Running into a bit of a wall here.
tl;dr WeChat shows a warning for certain top-level domains. My site was on a .me tld, which triggered a warning. The page rendering incorrectly is based on the warning (not sure about why these two things are connected)
After messing around with https (security issues) and removing all CDN-ified assets (thought they might be blocking down rendering), and hosting the site in China vs outside of China, I finally stumbled upon this. Nothing else matters. Its just the tld that triggers the warning and causes the rendering problem.

Google Chrome developer tools works very slow

Sinсe Google Chrome was updated to 50.x version, it become impossible to work with DevTools. This issue reproduced mostly in "Network" tab. Every time when you click on "request" it takes about 30-40 sec. after that chrome can crash. Tried to delete all extensions, clear cache, and reinstall, but didn't help. Does anybody know how to fix this issue?
I'm running Chrome 50.0.2661.87 m
UPD: The problem may be occurs because of long headers. Try to close response and request headers.
I've been having similar issues for debugging in Chrome versions 50+ on Mac OS X 10.11.3. The only solution I've found so far is to keep the dev tools docked to the right and it seems to be as performant as before. Not the optimal solution, but it works in my case.

Go to chrome://flags/#force-color-profile
Change it to sRGB
Since Google does not allow direct links to chrome:// you'll have to insert the colon by yourself, or enter the whole link manually into your toolbar.
My situation was similar, after struggling a while with extreme slow developer tools response I found out the problem was caused by a Chrome extension I had installed for knockoutJs.
So for people experiencing these issues, as part of the initial troubleshooting, try disabling chrome extensions.
I'm using the Version 61.0.3163.79 and I have the same issue that this post talks about.
With some searches I found out that the problem was in the user that I was using. What I tried was to enter int google chrome as guest and the devtools became faster again.
So what I did was:
Check out if debugging using the guest user is faster as it should be.
Logout from the account.
Clean all cache associated to google chrome.
Restart the PC (but i think closing the browser is enough)
Login again in your account.
I hope this could help other people with same problem.

I found out that after some time (weeks) the google chrome dev tools will get slower again. So I tried the following solution and it worked:
Open the dev tools
Go to the Sources tab.
Cleaned all watched variables, breakpoints, DOM breakpoint and Event Listeners breakpoint.

After some weeks, the issue came again. What I did was installing the google canary Version 64.0.3249.2 canary (64-bit) and my problems vanished.

The problem seems to have vanished in v.53 - they are currently trying to figure out what fixed it. If possible, the fix will be merged back to v.52. But at least they are working on it.
In case others arrive here facing the same issue I had, try changing the Dev tools tab you're looking at to Elements.
I had the "Sources" tab open and Chrome was trying to load enormous assets for that tab, which created a multisecond delay between the console.log() events I created and the display of those logged messages.
Make devtools snappy again by deactivating all breakpoints:
Go to the Sources tab, show the debugger (may be hidden) and hit Deactivate breakpoints.

I've had the same time issue on 54.0.2840.99 m version of Google Chrome.
But switching to Chrome Canary worked !
Reduce size of resource being overridden
Only overriding files with less lines of code worked well for me. I landed here because I was overriding a file which had 35,000 + lines of Javascript.
Further, if your resource is a new one - i.e. it is not included in a script tag or link tag, you can override main html document and add the tag : <script src="/my-new-script.js"></script>. Add the file to your domain-root within the Overrides folder on Chrome:

I also face same issue.
I tried unchecked toggle screencast. Now it is working fine.
In my case, I had Local Overrides setup (https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2018/01/devtools#overrides) in Downloads folder which had a lot of files in it and that slowed down devtools.
Setting up overrides in its own seprate directory fixed the slowness.
I sped up Chrome again by doing the following:
Open DevTools -> select Elements tab ->
select nested Computed tab -> under Filter, make sure that Show all is unselected.
select nested Event Listeners tab -> make sure that Ancestors and Framework listeners are unselected.
For me, running Chrome Version 81.0.4044.138 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Ubuntu 18, the problem seems to be the mobile view. When I disable mobile view inspecting becomes really fast again. I think it is caused by touch emulation and other mobile stuff.
To have something similar to a mobile view I move the DevTools dock to the side and resize it until I get the width I need. It is not perfect, but it is useful most of the time.
Besides Chrome, Firefox is much faster when inspecting sites overall, though I didn't use FF because I'm used to specific things on Chrome. Moreover, most of the sites I work with do not trigger these issues on Chrome, in fact, it happens with only one site.
PD: the site that triggers the issue on Chrome Dev Tools has lots of CSS variables. Not sure if that is related.
UPDATE 1 WEEK ago
I was able to use Chrome without issues even in the mobile view by disabling the option "Show media queries"
Go to the network tool and change it without any restrictions. Sometimes this happens if you change mobile settings. Google chrome changes this setting to test mobile device on low internet connection and leaves it that way.

Chrome keeps loading a old cache of my website

I am experiencing this weird issue where my Chrome browser keeps loading a old version of my website whose code doesn't even exist on my server any more. I assume it's a typical cache issue.
I tried to clean the browser cache, use igcognito mode, and clean DNS cache. The old cached page is still being loaded.

Using firefox or any other web browsers works perfectly.
It doesn't just happen to me. All my coworkers experience the same issue on my website.

You can implement a PHP script that must be the first line of code in your index file . It is an http header typically issued by web servers. You can also rename the resource that is considered "stale". This tutorial will give you more details. https://www.mnot.net/cache_docs/
I'm not sure if I understand your problem correctly, but I was experiencing something similar and instead of clearing the cache I disabled it by doing this:
Open chrome and then go to your website
Press Command + Option + C(Mac)
Now that you've opened chrome's DevTools, go to the main menu where it says: Elements Console Sources ...
Click on the menu element that says Network
Make sure that the "Disable Cache" checkbox is checked
Then reload the page without closing the DevTools
This worked for me.

A short term fix to view the new version of your site would normally be to clear out the cache and reload, for some reason this doesn't always work on Chrome. This short term solution is not going to fix the problem for every user that's on your site though, it will just allow you to see the new version of your site.
Adding version numbers to CSS and JS files will allow you and every other user, to see the most recent version of your site. A version number will force any browser not to load from the a user's personal computer cache, and instead load the actual files on the server, if the version number varies from the one in the user's cache.
So if you have these files on your server:
ExJS.js
ExCSS.css
and change them to:
ExJS.js?v=1.01
ExCSS.css?v=1.01
the new version of these files will load in any browser.
Normally, a browser will always load the HTML file from the server, but there are some HTML meta tags you can use to make sure that the most recent HTML version will load for any user:
<meta http-equiv="Cache-Control" content="no-cache, no-store, must-revalidate" />
<meta http-equiv="Pragma" content="no-cache" />
<meta http-equiv="Expires" content="0" />

You can press on Inspect, then Network and check Disable cache.
change the name of images and make the necessary image name changes in html file.. found this quick fix for my website
I ran into the same issue, and I also tried to disable caching on my JSP pages

But it didn't help.
This is a known issue with google chrome and chromium browsers, even though you clear cache and cookie.
However it may or may not happen for most of the users.
Also this has been unresolved till the date since last 9-10 years.
Hence for testing purposes I would highly recommend to use Mozilla Firefox or Opera.
However it does sounds that your application is limited to certain browsers for best experience, and may not sound convincing to Business/End users.
But having said that, this caching issue may or may not happen to most of us.
You should be able to clear the problem by resetting Chrome. This is the only way I found to clear this condition - after tearing my hair out for half a day.
Prior to finding this, I tried clearing the cache, deleting the contents of the various cache directories etc. in vain.
[As of today May 3 2021] You can do this by gong to 'Settings > Advanced > Reset and clean up > Restore settings to their original defaults'. Note that this will not remove any bookmarks but will log you out of all accounts you are signed into.
Adding CNAME Will help also if you always run site without www, try with www.example.com will work.
I came across this issue developing locally, and tried the following things:
Clearing Cache + generally ALL files in Chrome
Setting the Cache-Control Header like Eli Duhon mentioned.
Setting the Cache Control Header in multiple other ways.
And the only thing that fixed the problem for me was to basically re-start my docker containers on which the app was running.
so I did this:
docker-compose down
And then
docker-compose up
and everything was updated after that.
HOWEVER, if you have changes again, they are still not updated...
So this is certainly not a fix to this problem, as I dont even know what causes this behaviour in the first place, but I assume it has to do something with hot reloading and/or Docker but that was the only thing that did the trick for me so I thought I would mention it here...
I had this problem moving a Wordpress site to new hosting where the URL redirects to .../wp, which hadn't been the case before.
Chrome was helpfully presenting a directory listing showing the file dates from the old server, despite the DNS having updated fully a week ago. So it was obviously demonstrating the problem discussed here.
I added an index.html file with just the following in it:
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL='http://my-wp-site.com/wp'"/>
which fixed the problem straight away, including on Chrome browsers that had not had their cache cleared and that had no knowledge of any Google account of mine.
I don't know why this worked, however, given all the problems people have listed above.
you have two options
a) consider fingerprint the stale resources like
<script src="js/app-4829382839238882882bb3442bbbbdhh3kh3.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
b) Add cache control headers such as Cache-Control, Expires on your webserver.

Webpage displayed in Incognito, not in regular Chrome

So i have been running into this problem with a lot of Wordpress sites lately, usually occurring when i am logged in as Admin, so i couldn't post here because no one would be able to view the problem. However, i just found a site that it happens on that doesn't require admin creds.

When i visit this site in Chrome (Version 34.0.1847.137 m), it just displays a blank page. No errors, just the (what now seems standard) event.returnValue is deprecated. Please use the standard event.preventDefault() instead. warning. I have seen that warning signify problems on the site, but they are usually minor, not to the extent that the above URL displays. However, if i open an Incognito window and visit the site everything works perfectly and there is no warning. Does the Incognito window deal with webpages in a way that is so entirely different that it would cause something like this to happen?
I have been racking my brain trying to figure this out. Can anyone reproduce this? is it a bug in chrome?
EDIT: I just tried to open a bounty on this question and the EXACT same thing happened. In Regular Chrome, nothing happened when i clicked the start a bounty link and i saw various errors Undefined is not a function however in incognito everything worked perfectly. what gives?!
EDIT: Yes, i have cleared the cache, history, cookies, everything, and i still get the same errors. I cant even post a comment on this question because of errors...
I came across the same issue when trying to open evernote.com. It loaded successfully while using incognito mode in chrome. Let me share how I fixed this even though the original post is way too old. But maybe someone can find it useful.
I'm using chrome (Version 73.0.3683.103 (Official Build) (64-bit)) running on Linux Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS.
I tried disabling all extensions and clearing browser data/cache but nothing worked. PS: Disabling adblock previously worked for me. Yes, I stumbled over the same issue before and whitelisting evernote in adblock solved the issue. But it didn't now.
The following is what worked for me:
Open developers tools (CTRL + SHIFT + J).
Navigate to Applications tab.
Choose Clear storage from the side menu
Hit Clear site data button.
After reading the comments I dug into chrome and saw there was a bunch of extensions still sitting around that were definitely malware and I thought I had previously deleted. Instead of picking through them one-by-one, I just deleted everything, re-installed Chrome, and now everything works great!
I had the same issue. My application was working in Incognito mode and in Firefox but not in Regular Chrome. I even disabled all the extensions but no luck. I eventually cleared the Cached images and files because on developer console I found out that the regular chrome was still picking up the old file due to caching. So as soon as I cleared it, my app showed up like a rocket :)

I resolved the problem post that.
Since on Incognito , extensions are disabled, hence page run as expected.
I resolved this unforeseen issue using following steps.
CTRL + SHIFT + DEL > Clear Browsing Data.
Cookies and other site data
Cached images and files
This is for Chrome Browser.
Open Console (Ctl+Shift+I) first.
Then under the application tab, you will find some options on the left, find out the application there, you will find it at the top.
There you will find Service Workers.
Under Service Workers, there will be three checkboxes. Select Update on reload checkbox and reload again.
I had the same issue after installing React-Sight Extention.
The Page hanged but not in the incognito mode.
Try deleting any recently added or junk extension.
Delete your cache.

I had a similar issue in chrome, in my case the problem was that I could log in to my university library's website only in incognito mode. After some digging, I figured out that Google Translate extension was set to automatically translate any page. When I turned that off and instead selected never translate that specific page, it started working in the usual mode as well.
This is rather an old issue but still happens. None of the solutions recommended here and there did not solve the issue in my case.
I somehow noticed this is related with a -some kind of- corruption on the user profile.
This is how I solved it:
Close all Chrome browsers.
Open a Google page on Chrome.
Sign-out from Google (rigt click your profile picture on a Google page, not on the Chrome itself), and sign-in.
If this doesn't work:
Close all Chrome browsers.
Right click Chrome icon and select Google Chrome.
Delete your Google profile on the "select your profile" page.
Close Chrome.
Open Chrome, sign-in.
uBlock Origin was the culprit in my case. Once I allowed the site in uBlock Origin, pages loaded correctly in normal Chrome.
