SSIS development packages with no BIDS - ssis

I just have a simple question:
I have a production server with SQL Server 2008 SP2 installed with no BIDS!
Installing just ONLY Visual Studio 2008, will allow me to create an Integration Service Project?
Or BIDS is absolutely a mandatory requirement?
Thanks!

Visual Studio 2008 will let you create an Integration service Project
So no Bids isn't required but you have to have analysis services installed i believe to get that project type.

Cant create BIDS project in VS2008

Client :
- Windows 7 SP1 32bit
- With SQL Express - Advance series installed (with VS2008)
Server:
- Database: SQL Server 2008R2 Enterprise Ed., 64bit
- OS: Windows Server 2008
I always get the message "To design IS packages in BIDS, BIDS has to be installed"
What am I missing here?
Really need your help guys, first time using VS much more the BIDS.
Thanks,
Elmer
You need to install BIDS on your client machine. BIDS is not included as part of Visual Studio, it is part of SQL Server (but runs in the Visual Studio shell). So get your SQL 2008R2 media and run the installation a new instance or add features. You don't need any of the Instance Features, but you should include the following Shared Features:
Business Intelligence Development Studio
Client tools Connectivity
Client tools SDK
Management Tools - Complete
SQL Client Connectivty SDK

What tools do I need to create SSIS packages on Windows 8?

I am running Windows 8 and need to develop SSIS packages.
The version of SSIS packages I need are SQL Server 2008 R2.
I am new to SSIS but it is my understanding that I need to install SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2010 in order to be able to create an Integration Services project (which will contain my SSIS package). Is this correct?
Does anyone know what I need to install? I have installed SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2010 Premium however I do not get the option of Integration Services project template.
I have Visual Studio 2012 installed but it is my understanding that VS2012 cannot be used for SSIS package creation.
You need Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) if you want to create SSIS packages with SQL Server 2008 R2 version. BIDS uses Visual Studio 2008 Shell. Visual Studio 2010 is not required for SSIS development with SQL Server 2008 R2.
However, if you are using SQL Server 2012 then you need SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) which uses Visual Studio 2010 Shell.
Answer to the below SO question contains the steps to install Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) using SQL Server 2008 R2 installer.
How do I enable Integration Services (SSIS) in SQL Server 2008?
Windows 8 and SSIS development for SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2012 works fine.
SQL Server 2005 will use the Visual Studio 2005 shell (devenv) for BIDS (Business Intelligence Designer Studio)
SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 use the Visual Studio 2008 shell for BIDS
SQL Server 2012 uses Visual Studio 2010's shell for SSDT (SQL Server Development Tools). They have a roadmap for using Visual Studio 2012 environment as well but have not released the project templates yet.
For all those choices, you never need to have a Visual Studio installation. The SQL Server installer will put the shell onto your machine and the associated ssis/ssrs/ssas project types when you select the option in the installer.

If I install BIDS,does SSIS engine (run time) gets install?

I have installed Buisness Inteligence Studio, does this mean my machine has ssis engine installed? I just drove analogy from the fact that if I install Visual Studio then .Net framework gets installed by default.
not exactly. BIDS is a plug-ig for Visual Studio that allows you to build BI solutions (SSIS, SSAS and SSRS). You conld have BIDS installed because you have a Reporting Service intance installed for example.
Usually if you have Integration Services or an instance of SSAS or SSRS intalled, you would have BIDS too. But that not mandatory, It wouldnt be true on a PROD server for example where you can have SSIS but wouldnt have BIDS.
Best way yo know if you have SSIS is to go to the "SQL Server Configuration Manager". It will list all instances of the 3 products you have intalled

Is BID installed as part of SQL Server of Visual Studio or either?

Does Busienss Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS), part of the Visual Studio IDE, come with both SQL Serevr 2008 R2 Developers Edition and also as part of Visual Studio 2008 Developer's Edition?
BIDS is included with SQL Server. It is not part of the regular Visual Studio install. You can get BIDS by installing just the client tools from SQL Server without having to do a full install of the product.

How to build SSIS package without SQL Server Standard Edition

I'm doing data migration between two SQL Server 2008 database using SSIS because I need to do some data transformation. I guess I need to use Business Intelligence Developement Studio which I have on my develop machine. But because I don't have SQL Server Standard Edition on my develop machine. The BIDS do not allow me to build the SSIS package. Is there any work around? Thanks a lot in advance!
When you installed BIDS, did you also install the client tools for SQL Server?
Alternatively, you could remote to the dev server and devlop the package directly on the server.
You would normally install SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition on your development box.
SQL Server 2008 Developer enables
developers to build and test
applications that run on SQL Server on
32-bit, ia64, and x64 platforms. SQL
Server 2008 Developer includes all of
the functionality of Enterprise
Edition, but is licensed only for
development, test, and demo use.
