Here's a js fiddle of what I currently have, I am trying to make it so the boxes all fit within one line and there's a scrollbar that let's people scroll horizontally rather than having the boxes do what they're doing now.
Also, if anyone could get the class panel-body to fill 100% to the height of the page, that'd be awesome ;D
This is using Bootstrap 3.0.2, so the panels are pulled from that.
http://jsfiddle.net/Y55af/
Sample css:
.mainContent{
padding:20px;
}
.workplace_outter{
width:100%;
overflow-x:scroll;
}
.workplace_inner{
width:2000px;
}
.workplace_outter .panel{
width:300px;
margin-right:5px;
display:inline-block;
}
Sample HTML:
<div class="mainContent">
<div class="workplace_outter">
<div class="workplace_inner">
<div class="panel panel-default">
<div class="panel-heading">
Item
</div>
<div class="panel-body">
Item Body....
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
I don't quite understand what you mean by "get the white portion of the boxes to fill vertically", but since the panels are already inline-block elements, you can replace the width specification on their container with white-space: nowrap which will prevent any inline or inline-block elements from wrapping onto a second line.
Here's an updated fiddle, and the relevant code changed:
.workplace_inner{
/* width:2000px; (don't need anymore) */
white-space: nowrap;
}

I've got a red box and a green one, side-by-side, and centered. When the browser width is smaller than the width of the squares, they break into separate lines. How do I keep them together?
(I tried using a container div with their combined widths, which does the job in keeping them together, but they no longer are centered.)
Any suggestions?
The code:
<body>
<div style='text-align:center;font-size:0'>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:red;width:200px;height:50px'></div>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:green;width:200px;height:50px'></div>
</div>
</body>
You can run it here: https://plnkr.co/edit/2De21ziNmaeleFmkPuPF?p=preview
This can be done in many ways, here is 3:
Use min-width
<div style='text-align:center;font-size:0; min-width: 400px'>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:red;width:200px;height:50px'></div>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:green;width:200px;height:50px'></div>
</div>
Use white-space: nowrap
<div style='text-align:center;font-size:0; white-space: nowrap'>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:red;width:200px;height:50px'></div>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:green;width:200px;height:50px'></div>
</div>
Use display: flex;
<div style='text-align:center;font-size:0;display: flex;justify-content: center'>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:red;width:200px;height:50px'></div>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:green;width:200px;height:50px'></div>
</div>
Try using Flex-box
.parent{
display:flex;
border:1px solid green;
width:500px;
}
.parent div{
background:green;
width:100px;
height:100px;
margin:20px;
}
<div class="parent">
<div>cell1</div>
<div>cell2</div>
</div>
Hope this helps
If you give them a fixed width (ex 200+200px), when that div width is passed (ex mobile width of 375px < 400px of divs sum), the last element slide on the next row.
With width of 35% for each other, will look exactly as you want it for that 200px.
<body>
<div style='text-align:center;font-size:0; width: 100%;'>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:red; width:35%;height:50px'></div>
<div style='display:inline-block;background-color:green; width:35%;height:50px'></div>
</div>
</body>
Here is the link to your code
EDIT:
Here is a usefull link for understanding better the width options depends of the width of device, and I encourage you to take a deeply look inside of w3schools, or other platforms where you can learn better how to manipulate elements of html, with css and js.
screen-width
Try using width: 50% on the boxes instead of width: 200px.
I've managed to position two divs next to each other by using the following code however my left div won't allow a height:100% and seems to be defaulting to auto, how can I set the height to 100% with my current setup?
css:
.left_div
{
width:30%;
height:100%;
padding:10px;
text-align:center;
float:left;
overflow:hidden;
}
.right_div
{
word-wrap:break-word;
float:left;
width:65%;
margin-left:15px;
overflow:hidden;
}
html:
<div class='panel-body thread-body'>
<div class='panel panel-default original-post-panel'>
<!-- dynamically generated content -->
<div class='panel-body'>
<div class='left_div'>
<!-- dynamically generated content -->
</div>
<div class='right_div'>
<!-- dynamically generated content -->
</div>
<div style="clear:both">
</div>
</div>
</div>
Height of the floating divs doesn't goes up to the parents.
Thus, the height of the parent div will be 0.
Thus, the height of your left div will be also 0 if its height is set to 100%.
Thus, the content of your left div will overflow, and it will be visible only because of this overflow.
The simplest solution for your problem would be if you would put an empty div with clear: both after all of them:
<div class="left_div">...</div>
<div class="right_div">...</div>
<div style="clear: both"> </div>
Effectively, it will be a similar effect as if you would start an empty "new-line" (despite there is no textual line rendering here).
I have some divs which don't behave like I wish.
<div class="list-product-with-border">
<div style="width:80px; display:inline-block;">img</div>
<div style="display:inline-block;"><b>Productname</b></div>
<div style="float:right; width:80px;">
<div>
<button id="editBtn">Edit</button>
</div>
<div>
<button id="removeBtn">Remove</button>
</div>
</div>
</div>
JSFiddle link
Two problems here:
the bordered divs is not high enough: the 'remove' button is not visually in the bordered div
When the 'product name' is longer, the buttons are rendered under the div with the product name. I would like the product name to be over multiple lines when this happens. The three divs should always be next to eachother.
The first and last div has a fixed width, the middle div (product name) should stretch with the size of the bordered div
Personally I'd use a table for this. Each row of the table is an item, and you have a column of images, a column of names, and a column of actions. Is this any different to the tables used for invoices?
I can't quite get the effect you want, but improvements can be made: a floated element should come before the elements that are to go around it - so in this case, it should be the first thing inside the list-product-with-border container. Also, you should either have an element with clear:both at the end of the container, or set the container to have overflow:hidden to force the floated element to be inside.
Do you want it like this?
Here's the Fiddle
<style>
.list-product-with-border {
padding:3px;
width:60%;
border:1px solid black;
overflow: hidden;
height: auto;
}
</style>
And now the HTML
<div class="list-product-with-border">
<div style="width:80px; display:inline-block;">img</div>
<div style="display:inline-block; overflow:hidden; height: auto;"><b>Productname Is the right choice baby, as you can see its just done</b></div>
<div style="float:right; width:180px;margin-top: 10px;">
<div style="float: left;">
<button id="editBtn">Edit</button>
</div>
<div style="float: left;">
<button id="removeBtn">Remove</button>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
You must use display:table-cell instead of display:table-column and remove float:left for .divCell.
And add this style:
.headRow{
display:table-row;
}
I have a row with content which should be in the center of the site and a footer at the bottom. The content are divided into two 6 column. i want it to center align vertically according to the screen size. so i tried to give some percentage of top with a position relative but it doesn't work out.
If i give margin-top it is working. In order to make the top we have to give the position, so i have given it relative I don't want position absolute then the footer will come at the top of the site. Other content also will come top i thnik.
How to center align the contents and footer should stay at bottom all time all display size.
HTML
<div class='row'>
<div class='col-md-6 vertical'> content</div>
<div class='col-md-6 vertical'>content right</div>
</div>
<footer>sit at bottom</footer>
CSS
.vertical{
position:relative;
/* margin-top:20%; */ /*works*/
top:20%; /*not works even providing position */
}
JSFIDDLE NOTE: Don't forgot to resize the window then only you can able to see the two column division
<div class='row'>
<div class='col-md-6 '>
<div class="vertical"> content</div>
</div>
<div class='col-md-6 '>
<div class="vertical"> content</div>
</div>
</div>
<footer>sit at bottom</footer>
.vertical{
display: table-cell;
vertical-align:middle;
height: 200px /* Accordingly */
}
Working Fiddle Fiddle.
Apart from using display: table-cell, there is one more way to do it but is not so cross-browser at this moment. Take a look at CSS3 Flexbox.
How can I achieved aligning of N contiguous divs horizontally with a wrapper whose width is 'auto'?
like:
.boxes{ width:200px;height:200px;float:left; }
<div id="wrapper" style="width:auto;">
<div class="boxes"></div>
<div class="boxes"></div>
<div class="boxes"></div>
. . .
</div>
I tried applying display:inline; and display:inline-block; on wrapper but boxes goes into new y after it reaches the browsers/display width?
But setting document's width into fixed will solve the issue but its not what I want.
Also I can easily achieved this using tables but I don't want to do it because my code will look messy and will be hard for me to maintain.
Add
#wrapper
{
white-space: nowrap;
}
and on your boxes class: change float:left to display:inline-block;
FIDDLE
This will keep your boxes from wrapping.
