Note: This is about JavaFX WebView, not Android WebView (i. e. I have seen "Android Webview Anchor Link (Jump link) not working").
I display a generated HTML page inside a javafx.scene.web.WebView that contains anchors and links to those anchors like this:

I use this code to load the HTML into the WebView:

Everything is rendered correctly, but if I click on the link named "Introduction", nothing happens.
The HTML however is correct, which I checked by instead using this code:

The problem seems to be somehow because the document URL of the WebView is null when using loadContent(), but since it's a readonly property, I have no idea how to make it work.
I need to use loadContent(), because the HTML is generated on the fly, and if possible in any way, I don't want to have to write it out to a file just to make anchor links working. Is there a way to fix this?

I filed a bug for JavaFX.
It's probably another WebEngine bug. A lot of that code is just a native libraries wrapped in api, so we can't modify it in runtime to fix some disabilities.
If you are able to change the structure of generated file you can implement scrolling to element in js:

If you can't change the structure, there is some steps that I've made to try to fix it and some suggestions - at first I've set value of location by reflections after loadContent for sure:

But in fact, keeping state of actual location is just an information for you and manipulating this changes nothing. I've also found a way to set url from js (just a long shot, we don't have any specific details why it's not working):

I think you should forget about loadContent(). You said that you didn't want to write generated content to file. A little dirty hack but really helpful for you could be wrapped http server on random and unused port in your application. You don't even need external libraries because Java has simple utilities like that:

You can also use another browser to display your page, e.g. JCEF (Java Chromium Embedded Framework).
Using Ctrl-F in most browsers will allow you to search for text, but only in only the text areas. I would like to search for text in what should be accessible areas that are not necessarily text rendered areas such as <map ...><area title="searchable text" /></map> and <img alt="searchable text" />. Is there a browser or addon that will do what I'm asking for? This stuff is here for accessibility, but it doesn't seem to be really all that accessible (except by mouse hover, which again isn't all that accessible).
NOTE
An answer that is required, does not use something that is decoupled from the view. I.e. searching through the source code isn't an option as this is largely difficult to read (esp on complex pages) and doesn't show where the information is located on the rendered page.

If your question is so, there is no way to override what CTRL+F is doing in your browser.
You can design a custom plugin inside your website, or an addon for your browser. This would be quite easy... but will require other shortcut.
If your main problem is to locate tags based on their alt or title attributes content, this is quite easy in javascript:

Would something like the Web Developer browser plugin work? It's available for Chrome, FF and Opera. There are a few features that toggle the display of various attributes such as title, alt and even ARIA roles. This injects the attribute text inline with the element.
In my opinion, it's not a bug; they were just not designed for this use.
As I'm sure you are aware, the alt attribute replaces the image when it's not available. So how could you scroll to something that is not always displayed? Whereas you seem to be after a permanent description; a figcaption would be more appropriate for this.
As for the title attribute, it was intended to merely clarify the purpose of a link. There should not be any new information to the user in the title; therefore I think it would be redundant to have two lots of the same information highlighted in one place.
The purpose of searching is to find text on screen, seeing as neither title or alt are always displayed I think the user would be more confused by the fact that nothing is highlighted, and that they are just taken to an image or random link/area. If the image has a figcaption that becomes highlighted, then it would make sense to them. Besides, how are they going to search for the title if they don't know what to search for? Title and alt do not come up in text displayed by search engines; the user will never know about it unless they've been to your site before, in which case they'll know where to look.

Install a add-on called Tile Tabs, it make it possible for example left side is web view and the same page on right side with source code.
Install add-on called Web page to source code & viceversa that make it possible to toggle between view and source code by pressing on CTRL+SHIFT+S
Since what you required is not a default thing in all nowadays browses as far as I know.

Install FireBug, you can view/edit/debug source codes and view HTML live and what you highlight on the code will be also highlighted on the view.

You can use the search funktion in Chrome's developer tools "Elements" Tab (Press F12 -> Tab "Elements" -> Press CTRL + F) and use XPath on your searches. Example:

Matches will be shown with a yellow background in the code and when you hover it, its position will be hightlited in the view.

For the posterity! Further research shows that your goal might be possible to achieve using the Firefox-Addon Greasemonkey, which allows you to customize the way a web page displays or behaves, by using small bits of JavaScript.
I performed several tests with this addon and could achieve a nice effect with simple images (display the ALT attribute as a DIV overlapping the image), but with area sections the thing gets a lot more complicated, as area regions can be squares, circles, and polygons with infinite coordinates plus retrieving the exact positioning of the area itself can be a bit tricky but maybe gives you or someone else a start point.
Based on the ALT Tooltips Script (http://greasemonkey-user-scripts.arantius.com/alt-tooltips-for-firefox), I created the following script and defined it in Greasemonkey:

As you can see, the script firstly detects all "img" and "area" elements, extracts its positioning and creates a new DIV element containing the "alt" attribute, which is then positioned on the upper left corner of the image.
As stated, the problem with areas is, that the positioning should be relative to the parent image and not absolute like in the script, plus the coordinates should be extracted accordingly to the type of area shape (currently only extracting the two first coordinates of each area, which will work for squares but will surely fail for other shapes).

I see this only in Chrome.
The full error message reads:
"org.openqa.selenium.WebDriverException: Element is not clickable at point (411, 675). Other element would receive the click: ..."
The element that 'would receive the click' is to the side of the element in question, not on top of it and not overlapping it, not moving around the page.
I have tried adding an offset, but that does not work either. The item is on the displayed window without any need for scrolling.
This is caused by following 3 types:
1.The element is not visible to click.
Use Actions or JavascriptExecutor for making it to click.
By Actions:

Well guys, in my case there was a cookie overlay hiding the element occasionally.
Scrolling to the element also works; but in my humble opinion (for my case, not a panacea for everyone) the simplest solution is just to go full screen (I was running my scripts on a 3/4 of the screen window)! So here we go:

I have seen this in the situation when the selenium driven Chrome window was opened too small. The element to be clicked on was out of the viewport and therefore it was failing.
That sounds logical... real user would have to either resize the window or scroll so that it is possible to see the element and in fact click on it.
After instructing the selenium driver to set the window size appropriately this issues went away for me. The webdriver API is decribed here.
I was getting this error when running tests headless with xvfb-run. They were working flawlessly locally. Using chrome, versions of webdriver / chromedriver / chrome / java etc all identical.
The ‘won’t fix’ bug in chromedriver - GitHub Link pointed out by Tony Lâmpada suggested this may be related to what is / isn't visible on the screen.
Help message for xvfb-run shows the following:
-s ARGS --server-args=ARGS arguments (other than server number and
"-nolisten tcp") to pass to the Xvfb server
(default: "-screen 0 640x480x8")
Changing the resolution for xvfb made the error go away:

I, too, wrestled with this problem. Code works fine in FF, fails on Chrome. What I was trying to do was to click a tickbox - if it wasn't in view, I'd scroll to view and then click. Even scrolling into view works in Chrome, only the bottom few pixels of the tickbox wasn't visible so webdriver refused to click on it.
My workaround is this:

Chrome also has issues with sendKeys, using Actions is sometimes necessary. Obviously, you need to know which direction and how much you need to go so your mileage may vary. But I prefer this to the javascript hack, so I'm posting it here in case someone else will find it useful.
First, try to get the latest Chrome driver and check if it solves the issue.
In my case, it didn't fix the issue. But, the following solution worked for me so far. The following is C# code but you can follow same logic in your specific language. What we do here is,
Step 1: Focus on the element using the Selenium Actions object,
Step 2: Then do a click on the element
Step 3: If there's an exception, then we trigger a javascript "Click" event on the element by executing the javascript script through the Selenium browser driver's "ExecuteScript" method.
You can also skip step 1 and 2 and try only step 3 too. Step 3 would work on it's own but I noticed some strange behavior in one scenario in which step 3, even though it successfully clicked the element, caused unexpected behavior in other parts of my code after clicking the element.

By maximizing the browser size
Yes, it is a pointer issue that means the size of the browser. For that, you just need to maximize the window size manually or through the code.
I was facing a similar problem whre i have to check two check boxes one after the other.But i was getting the same above error.hence i added wait in between my steps for checking the checkboxes....its working fine and great.here are the steps:-
When I visit /administrator/user_profiles
And I press xpath link "//*[#id='1']"
Then I should see "Please wait for a moment..."
When I wait for 5 seconds
And I press xpath link "//*[#id='2']"
Then I should see "Please wait for a moment..."
When I visit /administrator/user_profiles_updates
The reason for this error is that the element that you are trying to click is not in the viewport (region seen by the user) of the browser. So the way to overcome this is by scrolling to the desired element first and then performing the click.

Apparently this is the result of a "Won't Fix" bug in the Chrome driver binary.

Re Tony Lâmpada's answer, comment #27 did indeed solve the problem for me, except that it provided Java code and I needed Python. Here's a Python function that scrolls to the element's position and then clicks it.

This solved the problem for me in Chrome 34.0. It caused no harm in Firefox 28.0 and IE 11; those browsers aren't subject to the problem, but scrolling to the element's position before clicking it still isn't a bad thing.
This might happen if the element changes position while the driver is attempting to click it (I've seen this with IE too). The driver retains the initial position but by the time it actually gets to clicking on it, that position is no longer pointing to that element. The FireFox driver doesn't have this problem BTW, apparently it "clicks" elements programmatically.
Anyway, this can happen when you use animations or simply change the height of elements dynamically (e.g. $("#foo").height(500)). You need to make sure that you only click elements after their height has "settled". I ended up with code that looks like this (C# bindings):

Explanation of error message:
The error message simply says, that the element you want to click on is present, but it is not visible. It could be covered by something or temporary not visible.
There could be many reasons why the element is not visible in the moment of the test. Please re-analyse your page and find proper solution for your case.
Solution for particular case:
In my case, this error occures, when a tooltip of the screen element i just clicked on, was poping over the element I wanted to click next. Defocus was a solution I needed.
Quick solution how to defocus would be to click to some other element in another part of the screen which does "nothing" resp. nothing happens after a click action.
Proper solution would be to call element.blur() on the element poping the tooltip, which would make the tooltip disapear.
I was facing the same problem with clj-webdriver (clojure port of Selenium). I just translated the previous solution to clojure for convenience. You can call this function before doing click or whatever to avoid that problem.

I was getting this bug because I tested a hover and then needed to click on the link underneath the tooltip. The solution was to add page.find('.sp-logo').hover before click_link to get the tooltip out of the way.
It's funny, all the time I spent looking at the various responses, no one had tried the obvious, which of course, I hadn't either. If your page has the same id used multiple times, as mine did, ("newButton",) and the one you want is not the first one found, then you will in all likelihood get this error. The easiest thing to do (C#):

My code is simply looping through an xml file and creating 'pages' (which are later animated).
This has all worked fine but now I want to add a sprite over the entire contents of the page if the contents of the xml contain a URL.
At run-time I can see that the checks for the URL are being processed correctly and that the overlay is being generated, but I cannot "see" it on the page.
The following code is located in a for loop for every page in the xml file:

From the console (using FireBug and FlashBug) the button is being created, but I cannot see it on screen so I am guessing the addChild bit is at fault.
What is wrong and how do I fix it?

Having set the alpha to 1 I can see that the overlay IS being added to the page, but it is not changing my cursor or responding to mouse clicks.
I now believe it is something wrong with the XML. It is correctly parsed XML (otherwise FlashPlayer would throw exceptions in my face) and it appears that this code works on every page except the second. Further more, if the second page is set as visible (a flag in the XML determins if the page is created or not) then none of the other pages overlay works.
Sorry to necro this thread but one thing I can think of is that because you specify a z-position to place your page it might be that the z-position generated by (i+1) is not the next one in line. AS3 doesn't allow display-objects to be placed on 'layers' with empty 'layers' between them which was allowed in AS2.
My guess is that during the loop at one point or another the loop doesn't generate a page which leaves an empty layer. The reason why the stage.addChild(page) actually works is because it simply searches for the next empty layer in that stack because you don't specify it.

last thing, check for textMC.hasLink() if its true or not. If its true, there is another problem with your code that is not related to this sample code.
Illogical answer:
Replaced stage.addChildAt(page,i+1); with stage.addChild(page);.
I was clutching at straws. Have spent FAR too long working on this blip, but it works! I don't know WHY it works, and at this point I don't care; IT WORKS!!! (sorry for the unprofessionalism however I have spent two and a half days working on this and have just got it working!)
If someone wants to explain why it works, feel free. I would VERY much prefer to learn why this occurs that struggle to work around it.
I have a web page that uses a frameset.
Due to scripting and object dependencies, I need to load the frames in a specific order.
I have used this example as a template:

This loads an empty page in place of the page I need to load last, then replaces it with the correct page after the first page has loaded.
However: I also need to use the browser Back button. If you run the sample at the above link, let both frames load, then click the Back button, the top frame reverts to the temporary blank page. It is then necessary to click the Back button again to navigate to the page before the frameset.
Is there a way to force frames to load in a specific order without this Back button behavior - or a way to force the Back button to skip the empty page?
This needs to work with Internet Explorer 6 and 7 and preferably with Firefox 3 as well.

This is a legacy system. The frameset is required.
If you are working on a legacy system, then I think it is time you accepted how framesets behave in terms of the browser's back button. If it is truly a legacy system, you don't need to fix this behaviour. If it is actually NOT a legacy system and you need to fix this problem, you need to get away from using a frameset. Framesets were deprecated from the HTML standards and shouldn't be used.
Why not use three iframes in the desired order, then resize/move them to the appropriate places?
