Disable warnings from within an Octave .oct file - octave

Is it possible to do this? In particular I want to toggle between warning ("off", "Octave:broadcast") and warning ("on", "Octave:broadcast"), i.e. set warning off at the beginning of the .oct file and then set warning on just before the .oct file returns its output. Of course I could do this in the terminal or in the calling script file, but I'd like to do it in the .oct file itself if possible.

There's two ways to do it in C++, very similar to the Octave language itself.
disable_warning (const std::string& id);
set_warning_state (const std::string &id, const std::string &state);
Actually, disable_warning is just wrapper around the second option set_warning_state (id, "off"). Take a look into the error.cc for more options related to this. I'm sure you can figure out yourself how to turn the warning back on at the end ;)

How to get value of variable from open file

I am working on TCL script that will open another tcl file and I want to get value of variable from second opened file and use it in the first file.
Two file abc.tcl and xyz.tcl
abc.tcl opens file xyz.tcl and reads value of variable and use it in abc.tcl.
If xyz.tcl sets a global variable, abc.tcl will be able to see it if it used source to load in xyz.tcl.
Here's a simple example. This is xyz.tcl:
set SomeVariable 12345
This is abc.tcl:
source xyz.tcl
puts "The password on my luggage is $SomeVariable"
The source command is really very simple internally. It just reads in the contents of the file (into a string), and then internally evals that string. Yes, this means that you probably shouldn't put source inside a procedure, at least not unless you're sure what the consequences of this are.

using a variable to identify file in 'print -dpdf file_name'

I am trying to use a formatted string to identify the file location when using 'print -dpdf file_name' to write a plot (or figure) to a file.
I've tried:
k=1;
file_name = sprintf("\'/home/user/directory to use/file%3.3i.pdf\'",k);
print -dpdf file_name;
but that only gets me a figure written to ~/file_name.pdf which is not what I want. I've tried several other approaches but I cannot find an approach that causes the the third term (file_name, in this example) to be evaluated. I have not found any other printing function that will allow me to perform a formatted write (the '-dpdf' option) of a plot (or figure) to a file.
I need the single quotes because the path name to the location where I want to write the file contains spaces. (I'm working on a Linux box running Fedora 24 updated daily.)
If I compute the file name using the line above, then cut and paste it into the print statement, everything works exactly as I wish it to. I've tried using
k=1;
file_name = sprintf("\'/home/user/directory to use/file%3.3i.pdf\'",k);
print ("-dpdf", '/home/user/directory to use/file001.pdf');
But simply switching to a different form of print statement doesn't solve the problem,although now I get an error message:
GPL Ghostscript 9.16: **** Could not open the file '/home/user/directory to use/file001.pdf' .
**** Unable to open the initial device, quitting.

if you use foo a b this is the same as foo ("a", "b"). In your case you called print ("-dpdf", "file_name")
k = 1;
file_name = sprintf ("/home/user/directory to use/file%3.3i.pdf", k);
print ("-dpdf", file_name);
Observe:
>> k=1;
>> file_name = sprintf ('/home/tasos/Desktop/a folder with spaces in it/this is file number %3.3i.pdf', k)
file_name = /home/tasos/Desktop/a folder with spaces in it/this is file number 001.pdf
>> plot (1 : 10);
>> print (gcf, file_name, '-dpdf')
Tadaaa!
So yeah, no single quotes needed. The reason single quotes work when you're "typing it by hand" is because you're literally creating the string on the spot with the single quotes.
Having said that, it's generally a good idea when generating absolute paths to use the fullfile command instead. Have a look at it.

printing the output of shell command from python subprocess

I am running a shell script which emits lots of line while executing...they are just status output rather than the actual output....
I want them to be displayed on a JTextArea. I am working on jython. The piece of my code looks like:
self.console=JTextArea(20,80)
cmd = "/Users/name/galaxy-dist/run.sh"
p = subprocess.Popen(cmd, stdout=subprocess.PIPE,stderr=subprocess.PIPE, shell=True)
self.console.append(p.stdout.read())
This will wait until the command finishes and prints the output. But I want to show the realtime out put to mimic the console. Anybody have the idea ?
You're making things more complicated than they need to be. The Popen docs state the following about the stream arguments:
With the default settings of None, no redirection will occur; the child’s file handles will be inherited from the parent. [my emphasis]
Therefore, if you want the subprocess' output to go to your stdout, simply leave those arguments blank:
subprocess.Popen(cmd, shell=True)
In fact, you aren't using any of the more advanced features of the Popen constructor, and this particular example doesn't need any parsing by the shell, so you can simplify it further with the subprocess.call() function:
subprocess.call(cmd)
If you still want the return code, simply set a variable equal to this call:
return_code = subprocess.call(cmd)

Is there something equivalent to C's #include in Octave?

Suppose that I have 2 scripts:
magic_function.m:
function retval = magic(x)
retval = 12345678;
endfunction
other_script.m
#some code
X = magic(17)
What should I add to other_script.m in order to make function "magic" visible?
Judging by the documentation of Functions and Script Files, it should be sufficient to put the function in a file named magic.m in a directory specified in LOADPATH.
When Octave encounters an identifier that is undefined, it first looks
for variables or functions that are already compiled and currently
listed in its symbol table. If it fails to find a definition there, it
searches the list of directories specified by the built-in variable
LOADPATH for files ending in `.m' that have the same base name as the
undefined identifier.(4) Once Octave finds a file with a name that matches, the contents of the file are read. If it defines a single
function, it is compiled and executed.

How to source a script file by passing arguments?

Say I have a tcl script and I want to pass some arguments to the second script file which is being sourced in the first tcl:
#first tcl file
source second.tcl
I want to control the flow of second.tcl from first.tcl and I read that tcl source does not accept arguments. I wonder how I can do then.
source does not accept any additional arguments. But you can use (global) variables to pass arguments, e.g.:
# first tcl file
set ::some_variable some_value
source second.tcl
The second TCL file can reference the variable, e.g.:
# second tcl file
puts $::some_variable
Remark:
Sourcing a file means that the content of the sourced script is executed in the current context. That means that the sourced script has access to all variables existing in that context. The above code is the same as:
# one joint tcl file
set ::some_variable some_value
puts $::some_variable
Regarding the "::" thing -- see the explanation here (sorry, I don't have enough rep. to leave comments yet).
I should also add that the original question discusses a problem which appears to be quite odd: it seems that it could be better to provide a specific procedure in your second source file that would set up a state pertaining to what is defined by that script.
Something like:
source file2.tcl
setup_state $foo $bar $baz
Making [source] behave differently based on some global variables looks too obscure to me. Of course you might have legitimate reasons to do this, but anyway...
