how to use an html entity as text - html

I am making a developer page for my website, and I have HTML code for a button to put into their own website. But the code for them to copy has an entity in it, and I need the entity to appear as text. Can anyone help?

That is, the code in the question but the ampersand & before Leftarrow escaped as &, by normal HTML rules.
However, the character reference &Leftarrow; is an addition in HTML5 and not supported by older browsers. It is a pointless risk to use it, instead of the HTML 4 entity reference ⇐, which is considerably more widely supported. Or you could enter the character “⇐” itself, provided that developers know how to use UTF-8 property, as they should.
The entity &Arrowleft mentioned in the question does not belong to any HTML version. The names of entity/character references for arrows are very confusing (who would have guessed that &LeftArrow; and &leftarrow; are the same thing, but different from&Leftarrow;?), which is yet another reason to use the character themselves, or numeric references like ⇐.
Note that independently of these notational issues, the character “⇐” is has limited font support. If you only use it in an icon-like manner, using an image, with an adequate alt text, is probably a safer option.

Use this chart http://dev.w3.org/html5/html-author/charref as guidance, and replace the HTML entities with their corresponding entity reference. So if you have < use < instead, for example.

Use this markup:

If you're posting this into some kind of CMS and it's changing your code, try wrapping everything in <pre></pre>.

Yes. Just as the error said, in HTML, attributes are #PCDATA meaning they're parsed. This means you can use character entities in the attributes. Using & by itself is wrong and if not for lenient browsers and the fact that this is HTML not XHTML, would break the parsing. Just escape it as & and everything would be fine.
HTML5 allows you to leave it unescaped, but only when the data that follows does not look like a valid character reference. However, it's better just to escape all instances of this symbol than worry about which ones should be and which ones don't need to be.
Keep this point in mind; if you're not escaping & to &, it's bad enough for data that you create (where the code could very well be invalid), you might also not be escaping tag delimiters, which is a huge problem for user-submitted data, which could very well lead to HTML and script injection, cookie stealing and other exploits.
Please just escape your code. It will save you a lot of trouble in the future.
Validation aside, the fact remains that encoding certain characters is important to an HTML document so that it can render properly and safely as a web page.
Encoding & as & under all circumstances, for me, is an easier rule to live by, reducing the likelihood of errors and failures.
Compare the following: which is easier? Which is easier to bugger up?

HTML5 rules are different from HTML4. It's not required in HTML5 - unless the ampersand looks like it starts a parameter name. "&copy=2" is still a problem, for example, since © is the copyright symbol.
However it seems to me that it's harder work to decide to encode or not to encode depending on the following text. So the easiest path is probably to encode all the time.
I think this has turned into more of a question of "why follow the spec when browser's don't care." Here is my generalized answer:
Standards are not a "present" thing. They are a "future" thing. If we, as developers, follow web standards, then browser vendors are more likely to correctly implement those standards, and we move closer to a completely interoperable web, where CSS hacks, feature detection, and browser detection are not necessary. Where we don't have to figure out why our layouts break in a particular browser, or how to work around that.
Specifically, if HTML5 does not require using & in your specific situation, and you're using an HTML5 doctype (and also expecting your users to be using HTML5-compliant browsers), then there is no reason to do it.
Well, if it comes from user input then absolutely yes, for obvious reasons. Think if this very website didn't do it: the title of this question would show up as Do I really need to encode ‘&’ as ‘&’?
If it's just something like echo '<title>Dolce & Gabbana</title>'; then strictly speaking you don't have to. It would be better, but if you don't, no user will notice the difference.

A couple of years ago, we got a report that one of our web apps wasn't displaying correctly in Firefox. It turned out that the page contained a tag that looked like
<div style="..." ... style="...">
When faced with a repeated style attribute, Internet Explorer combines both of the styles, while Firefox only uses one of them, hence the different behavior. I changed the tag to
<div style="...; ..." ...>
and sure enough, it fixed the problem! The moral of the story is that browsers have more consistent handling of valid HTML than of invalid HTML. So, fix your damn markup already! (Or use HTML Tidy to fix it.)

Interestingly, I had to escape the character in order to represent it properly in my answer here. If I were to use the built-in code sample option (from the answer panel), I can just type in & and it appears as it should. But if I were to manually use the <code></code> element, then I have to escape in order to represent it correctly :)

What is _mce_href?

I was looking at some code on a website and I saw the following code for a link:

Is there a purpose for it?
That's not a valid HTML attribute, it was kind of bug in older versions of Tiny MCE editor, though, using data- prefix before that attribute can make that custom attribute valid as of HTML5.

This attribute was used in tiny mce. Most of the time developers creates its own attribute(s) to process the tags or data in user define attributes, you can also see in the jquery plugins at run time it add styling or add attributes, you can also create your own attributes, its not a big deal. Strange attribute in DIV tag

I am seeing some attribute I have never seen before in a div tag. I haven't touch html for a while but googling the attribute didn't return much useful info.

My question is, do you know what are these "dataquery" "comp" and "propertyquery" attributes?

HTML is often enhanced with custom attributes these days, and HTML5 explicitly allows for that. Normally these attributes should be prefixed with "data-", but obviously this is not the case here.
The meaning depends most probably on a script included in the page.
For example, in twitter bootstrap it is common to see attributes like <body data-spy='scroll'> which is than interpreted by a script and allows for monitoring the amount a user scrolls.
When including Facebook like buttons you may have attributes like data-style which controls whether a box, or a button, or hwatever is used.
You can add you own attributes to elements. I don't think theese atributes are standard attributes lika class and name but an attribute that the programmer has added self for some purpose.
Those are not W3C attributes, they have used to perform some task, may be to the lagulage it used and may performance some special tags, But its not best practice because it gives HTML validation errors, better thing is use data-xxxx tag for extra attributes.

Words showing differently in the browsers

I am working on a site which has some Norwegian words. When I used "På" inside a <span> it is showing as "PÃ¥" in the browser.This is happening only for a particular page. For others it is working fine.I have tried to copy-paste from other working pages.But had no effect.It is showing "PÃ¥" instead of "På".Why this is happening?

The character encoding of the page is wrong: the real encoding differs from the declared encoding. Using entity references for all non-Ascii characters would hide the symptoms (with the pertaining risk that later on, when someone inserts an “å”, things go wrong again). But the solution is to remove the conflict.
