I'm collecting data with a Google Form, and storing it in a spreadsheet.
I would like to write a script to create separate spreadsheet, sorted by name.
E.g.
I have three users: Daniel, Gilles and Jean Pierre.
I want to create a separate sheet from the main one, listing only the data submitted.
So, if the name is Daniel in row 2, I want to copy all the data in the row to the second sheet
So far:
function tri()
{
var ss = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
var data = ss.getDataRange().getValues();
var sheet2 = ss.getSheets()[1];
for (var t=1; t<data.length; t++)
{
if (data ='Daniel')
{
sheet2.appendRow([data]);
}
}
}
No need for code, you can do this in the spreadsheet. The solution I'd prefer would be to create named tabs for each of your users, put their name in cell A1 of their sheet, then use the spreadsheet QUERY function to populate their sheet. Something like this in cell A3, say:
=query('Form Responses'!A1:Z,"select * where B = '" &A1 & "'")
Adjust the source to match your reality ('Form Responses'!A1:Z).
But if you must use script, try this:
function tri()
{
var ss = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
var sheet = ss.getSheetByName("Form Responses");
var data = sheet.getDataRange().getValues();
var users = ['Daniel', 'Gilles', 'Jean Pierre'];
for (var user=0; user<users.length; user++) {
// Open sheet with user's name; create if needed
var dest = ss.getSheetByName(users[user]);
if (!dest) dest = ss.insertSheet(users[user], user+1);
var newData = [];
newData.push(data[0]); // copy headers
for (var row=1; row < data.length; row++) {
// If row is for this user, copy it
if (data[row][1] === users[user]) newData.push(data[row]);
}
// Clear user's sheet, then save collected data
dest.clearContents();
dest.getRange(1, 1, newData.length, newData[0].length).setValues(newData);
}
}
As a complement to Mogsdad (excellent) answer I'd like to add a detail that might be important.
Since your users are filling a form you can't be sure about the way they will be entering their names, will Daniel write "Daniel" or "DANIEL" or even "daniel" if he is in a hurry ? and for "Jean Pierre" it could even be worse since normally there should be a hyphen between Jean and Pierre !!!
So I'd suggest to add some logic around the name detection or, other possible solution if you know exactly who will fill this form, use a list select in your form to choose the names from.
This latest solution would be the simplest one of course...
Otherwise you can simply use :
...data[row][1].toUpperCase().replace(/ /g,'') == users[user];// users should then be defined in UPPERCASE
for example to avoid any upper/lower case error and extra spaces...

So I have multiple files that have a column where I would like to update in the formula. However, there might be a certain cell that already has a value in it, but I don't want to replace it with the formula (see screenshot for reference).
I read some references here, but haven't found a similar case like mine.
This is the attempt that I do, but it's not working:
function updateWithFormula(){
/*** Input Data From Multiple Sources ****/
var sourceWorkbook = SpreadsheetApp.openById('')//id of the workbook
//Open tab 'Sheet1' and pull the data inside the script
var sourceSheet = sourceWorkbook.getSheetByName('Sheet1')
var source = sourceSheet.getDataRange().getDisplayValues()
for(row in source){
if (source[row][3]=="Update Value") {
//open files through link
var files = SpreadsheetApp.openByUrl(source[row][2]) //there's a link inside this column that linked to the file that I want to update
/*******insert formula *******/
//get range that want to be inserted by the formula, which is column S
//if the column S already have value in it, I don't want to do anything in it, however if it doesn't have value, I would like to put a formula
var result = files.getSheetByName('Sheet1').getRange("S2:S") //this is the column that I want to update
//set formula
for(r in result)
{
if(result[r] == "")
result[r].setFormula("=R"+ r+1)
}
}
}
}
Do you guys have any idea why my code is not working? Any advice for this case?
Thank you!
Objective
If I understood correctly, your objectives are the following:
Retrieve data from a "master" spreadsheet with information on which spreadsheets to update.
Loop through said data and locate the spreadsheets (represented as rows) that require updating.
Open those spreadsheets individually.
Update those spreadsheets rows with a sheets formula if a certain condition is met (in this case, that the cell is blank).
Issues
The for(var a in b) syntax in javaScript is used to iterate through object, not arrays. You should change it to:
for (var i = 0; i<source.length; i++){
//YOUR CODE
}
where: source[i] lets you access that specific row.
When you try to get the individual sheets' values, you are actually only getting the range, not the values themselves. You should replace this:
var result = files.getSheetByName('Sheet1').getRange("S2:S")
with this:
var sheet = files.getSheetByName('Sheet1');
var range = sheet.getRange("S2:S");
var values = range.getValues();
(You can read more about ranges and how they work here).
To input values into a spreadsheet, you should do it by using the setValue() method in the range class. Again, go here for more info. So, instead of:
result[r].setFormula("=R"+ r+1)
use:
var rangeToModify = sheet.getRange(j, 19); //LETTER S IS THE 19TH
rangeToModify.setValue("=R"+ (j+1)); //SET THE FORMULA
Final Code
function updateWithFormula(){
var sourceWorkbook = SpreadsheetApp.openById('')//id of the workbook
//Open tab 'Sheet1' and pull the data inside the script
var sourceSheet = sourceWorkbook.getSheetByName('Sheet1')
var source = sourceSheet.getDataRange().getDisplayValues()
for(var i = 0; i<source.length; i++){
if (source[i][3]=="Update Value"){
var files = SpreadsheetApp.openByUrl(source[row][2]);
var sheet = files.getSheetByName('Sheet1');
var range = sheet.getRange("S2:S");
var values = range.getValues();
//set formula
for(var j = 0; j<values.length; j++){
if (values[j] == ""){
//GET THE RANGE THAT YOU WANT TO MODIFY
var rangeToModify = sheet.getRange(j, 19); //LETTER S IS THE 19TH
rangeToModify.setValue("=R"+ (j+1)); //SET THE FORMULA
}
}
}
}
}
I believe your current situation and your goal are as follows.
"Sheet1" of sourceWorkbook has the Spreadsheet URLs and the value of "Update Value" in the columns "C" and "D", respectively.
You want to retrieve the Spreadsheet from the URL, and want to check the column "S2:S" of of "Sheet1" in the retrieved Spreadsheet, and want to put a formula like "=R"+ r+1 to the non-empty cells of the column "S".
In this case, how about the following modification?
Modification points:
var result = files.getSheetByName('Sheet1').getRange("S2:S") returns Class Range object. This cannot be used with for(r in result). This is the reason of but it's not working. This has already been mentioned by the Oriol Castander's answer.
When setFormula is used in a loop, the process cost becomes high.
When these points are reflected in your script, it becomes as follows.
Modified script:
function updateWithFormula() {
var sourceWorkbook = SpreadsheetApp.openById(''); // Please set your Spreadsheet ID.
var sourceSheet = sourceWorkbook.getSheetByName('Sheet1');
var source = sourceSheet.getDataRange().getDisplayValues();
source.forEach(r => {
if (r[3] == "Update Value") {
var sheet = SpreadsheetApp.openByUrl(r[2]).getSheetByName("Sheet1");
var rangeList = sheet.getRange("S2:S" + sheet.getLastRow()).getDisplayValues().flatMap(([e], i) => e == "" ? [`S${i + 2}`] : []);
if (rangeList.length > 0) {
sheet.getRangeList(rangeList).setFormulaR1C1("=R[0]C[-1]");
}
}
});
}
In this modification, the formula is put as the R1C1 using the range list. By this, I thought that the process cost will be able to be reduced a little.

I'm trying to write some Apps Script to pull only the email addresses which match from an array of companies into another sheet for processing. This should also remove the #company.com extension and leave me with just the username.
So on Sheet 1:
In Column E, we have the Company names under Header: "Company"
In Column D, we have the Email Addresses under Header: "Emails"
On Sheet 2:
In Column A, we need the Username result under Header: "Username"
Currently the below script which should have 2 results, comes back with:
this
Any help with this would be immensely appreciated as I'm losing my mind.
Thank you!
function pullUsernames() {
//Get Sheet1
var ss = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
var sheet = ss.getSheetByName("Sheet1");
//Set Values for Search
var valuesToWatch = ['Company1','Company2'];
var range = sheet.getRange(2,5,sheet.getLastRow()-1).getValues();
var emails = sheet.getRange(2,4,lr-1).getValues();
//For Loop to match values, etc.
for(var i=0; i < range.length; i++){
if(valuesToWatch.indexOf(range[i][0])){;
var targetSS = SpreadsheetApp.openById("1hpIIgkXMgrlOfYqfS4A3ro8BFQB02dAy5G40Y7vUI2c").getSheetByName("Sheet2");
var targetRange = targetSS.getRange(i+1,1,targetSS.getLastRow(),1);
var usernames = String(emails[i][0]).replace("#company.com", "")
targetRange.setValue(usernames[i][0]);
} //if
} //for
} //Function
There were a bunch of issues in your code and I decided to optimize them. Feel free to modify the code if needed.
Issues:
Both range and emails can be fetched together instead of separate
Brought targetSS outside the loop since it is only static based on your issue
I don't quite get your getRange, I assume you want to append the usernames on the last row? If so, then use appendRow instead.
Since I didn't use the array index now, I used includes instead to check if the data is in valuesToWatch.
Your email string manipulation is quite hard coded so I replaced it with a better solution, removing anything but the characters before #.
Code:
function pullUsernames() {
var ss = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
var sheet = ss.getSheetByName("Sheet1");
// update your targetSS, made it under same ss for easier testing
var targetSS = ss.getSheetByName("Sheet2");
// set values for search
var valuesToWatch = ['Company1', 'Company2'];
// get email and company columns in one go
var data = sheet.getRange(2, 4, sheet.getLastRow() - 1, 2).getValues();
// each row of data contains email and company formatted as [email, company].
data.forEach(function ([email, company]){
if(valuesToWatch.includes(company))
// remove anything from # onwards from email and append at last row
targetSS.appendRow([email.substring(0, email.lastIndexOf("#"))]);
});
}

Sample Output:
I have a problem where I have two sheets. one sheet is the source spreadsheet and another is a target spreadsheet. The source spreadsheet has a source sheet has which is the master database and the target spreadsheet has the target where we want to fetch data from source sheet based on emails provided in the Emails tab in the target spreadsheet.
I want the following things to happen with a script and not with IMPORTRANGE or QUERY:
The target spreadsheet will have multiple copies so I want to connect the target spreadsheet with the source spreadsheet based on the source spreadsheet's id.
I want the email matches to be case insensitive so that the users of the target spreadsheet can type emails in any case.
The Emails can go up to 50 or let's say get the last row for that column.
It will be great if the script shows a pop up saying updated after it has fetched the data.
The source sheet might have data up to 15000 rows so I am thinking about speed too.
I have shared both of the spreadsheets with hyperlinks to their names. I am not really great at scripts so it will be helpful if you can leave comments in it wherever you feel like. I would truly appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance!
Script here:
function fetch() {
//get the sheets
var source_Ssheet = SpreadsheetApp.openById('19FkL3rsh5sxdujb6x00BUPvXEEhiXfAeURTeQi3YWzo');
var target_Ssheet = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
//get the tabs
var email_sheet = target_Ssheet.getSheetByName("Emails");
var target_sheet = target_Ssheet.getSheetByName("Target Sheet");
var source_sheet = source_Ssheet.getSheetByName("Source Sheet");
//get ranges
var email_list = email_sheet.getRange("B2:B");
var target_sheet_range = target_sheet.getRange("A1:F100");
var source_sheet_range = source_sheet.getRange("A1:F100");
//get last rows
var last_email_name = email_list.getLastRow();
var last_target_sheet_range = target_sheet_range.getLastRow();
var last_source_sheet_range = source_sheet_range.getLastRow();
//start searching for emails
for (var i=3; i < last_email_name.length+1; i++)
{
for(varj=3; j< last_source_sheet_range.length+1; j++ )
{
if(source_sheet_range[j][3].getValue() == email_list[i][3].getValue())
{
//copy matches to target sheet
target_sheet.getRange((last_target_sheet_range + 1),1,1,10).setValues(master_sheet_range[j].getValues());
}
}
}
}
Several things
last_email_name and last_source_sheet_range are numbers - they do not have any length, this is why your first forloops are not working
You are missing a space in varj=3;
email_list[i][3].getValue() does not exist because email_list only includes B - that only one column. I assume you meant email_list[i][0].getValue()
ranges cannot be addressed with the indices [][], you need to retrieve the values first to have a 2D value range.
You email values in the different sheets do not follow the same case. Apps Script is case sensitive, to suee the == comparison you need to use the toLowerCase() method.
Also mind that defining getRange("B2:B") will include many empty rows that you don't need and will make your code very slow. Replace it through getRange("B2:B" + email_sheet.getLastRow());
Have a look here at the debugged code - keep in mind that there is still much room for improvement.
function fetch() {
//get the sheets
var source_Ssheet = SpreadsheetApp.openById('19FkL3rsh5sxdujb6x00BUPvXEEhiXfAeURTeQi3YWzo');
var target_Ssheet = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
//get the tabs
var email_sheet = target_Ssheet.getSheetByName("Emails");
var target_sheet = target_Ssheet.getSheetByName("Target Sheet");
var source_sheet = source_Ssheet.getSheetByName("Source Sheet");
//get ranges
var email_list = email_sheet.getRange("B2:B" + email_sheet.getLastRow()).getValues();
var target_sheet_range = target_sheet.getRange("A1:F100").getValues();
var source_sheet_range = source_sheet.getRange("A1:F100").getValues();
var last_target_sheet_range = target_sheet.getLastRow();
//start searching for emails
for (var i=1; i < email_list.length; i++)
{
for(var j=1; j< source_sheet_range.length; j++ )
{
if(source_sheet_range[j][0].toLowerCase() == email_list[i][0].toLowerCase())
{
target_sheet.getRange((last_target_sheet_range + 1),1,1,6).setValues([source_sheet_range[j]]);
}
}
}
}
I have a bunch of data I want to put in to multiple sheets, and to do it manually would take time and I would like to learn scripting too.
So say I have a sheet with the states in one column.
I would like to have a script make new sheets based off the values of that column, and make a hyperlink to those sheets, and sort the sheets alphabetically.
In each sheet, I need to have the A1 cell the same name as the sheet.
Here is an example of states
Any suggestions would be helpful
Edit:
This is code that can make sheets based on the values of the columns.
function makeTabs() {
var ss = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
var sheet = ss.getActiveSheet();
var last = sheet.getLastRow();//identifies the last active row on the sheet
//loop through the code until each row creates a tab.
for(var i=0; i<last; i++){
var tabName = sheet.getRange(i+2,1).getValue();//get the range in column A and get the value.
var create = ss.insertSheet(tabName);//create a new sheet with the value
}
}
(note the "sheet.getRange(i+2,1" assumes a header, so pulls from the first column, starting on the second row)
I still need to:
Add a hyper link in the index sheet to the State's sheet: example: A2 on the Index sheet
would be =HYPERLINK("#gid=738389498","Alabama")
Also I need the A1 cell of the State's page to have the same info as
the index. example: Alabama's A1 cell would be =Index!A2
You could take a look at this script:
function createSheets(){
var ss = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet();
var indexSheet = ss.getSheetByName('Index');
var indexSheetRange = indexSheet.getDataRange();
var values = indexSheetRange.getValues();
var templateSheet = ss.getSheetByName('TEMPLATE_the_state');
templateSheet.activate();
var sheetIds = [],
state,
sheetId,
links = [];
for (var i = 1 ; i < values.length ; i++){
state = values[i][0];
sheetId = undefined;
try{
var sheet = ss.insertSheet(state, {template: templateSheet});
SpreadsheetApp.flush();
sheet.getRange("A1:B1").setValues([['=hyperlink("#gid=0&range=A' +(i+1)+'","go back to index")',state]]);
sheetId = sheet.getSheetId();
}
catch (e) { Logger.log('Sheet %s already exists ' , sheet)}
sheetIds.push([sheetId,state]);
}
sheetIds.forEach(function(x){
links.push(['=HYPERLINK("#gid='+x[0]+'&range=A1","'+x[1]+'")']);
});
indexSheet.getRange(2,1,links.length,links[0].length).setValues(links) // in this case it is clear to us from the outset that links[0].length is 1, so we could have written 1
}
Note that in my version, I created a template sheet from which to base all the state sheets from. This wasn't what you asked for, but I wanted to see what it would do.
The resulting sheet is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Rk00eXPzkfov5e3D3AKOVQA2UdvE5b8roG3-WeI4znE/edit?usp=sharing
Indeed, I was surprised at how long it took to create the full sheet with all the states - more than 250 secs. I looked at the execution log, which I have added to the sheet in its own tab. There it is plain to see that the code is quick, but sometimes (why only sometimes, I don't know) adding a new tab to the spreadsheet and/or flushing the formulas on the spreadsheet is very slow. I don't know how to speed it up. Any suggestions welcome. (I could try the Google Sheets API v4, probably would be much faster ... but that is much more work and tougher to do.)
I am hoping that someone might be able to help me out, I've been doing a lot of searching in the past few days and coming up short of a solution. Likely has to do with my lack of knowledge on coding... I know enough to be dangerous, just not enough to be effective or efficient!
To start, here is my goal.
To create a document, that will contain a 'master list' of tasks for my marketing team.
Each team member (currently 4) will have their own tab, which would only display tasks assigned to their name & have blank spaces under both 'completed' and 'canceled' columns...
In addition to the team member tabs, there would be two others, 'Completed' and 'Canceled'. These tabs would contain any tasks, by any team member, that have a date under the respective column.
Currently, I managed to create a script that will delete all tabs (other than the master list) and recreate them with the assigned name. What I haven't been able to do is get each sheet to filter results. I can't seem to get any code that I've found in the forums to work. Nothing will filter the results automatically on any tab, it only copies the master list and renames the tabs. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Am I going about this in the most efficient way possible? Do I need a button that will run the script on command? Is there a way for the 'team member' sheets to update live based on what is entered into the master list? I tried to utilize this information (Filter data by column K in Google Script Editor (Google Sheets)) but was not able to make it function within my document.
Sorry for the lengthy, post, thanks in advance for any and all help!
