Ok So I have a div that loads some data and makes the entire page load slowly. Fortunately this data can wait and I would like to load it last. I've seen the other posts like this but need a bit more help getting it to work as I am fairly inexperienced.
So for example I have:
<div id="stuff">
<?php Some PHP Here ?>
</div>
Now I have
$(window).load(function () {
$('#stuff').load('');
});
A few questions...Do I create an empty div and then fill it with the data or can I have the data in there and then specify that to load last, which would be preferred if possible.
I understand I can have a webpage loaded like $('#stuff').load('stuff.php'); but I use a variable inside the div so how would I pass it to that load function and into the php page?
I just don't know how to pass variables up to the javascript everytime that div is loaded as it's in a while loop.
Thanks for the help.
Because javascript processes on client side and PHP runs on server side, you cannot do PHP operations on HTML that have already been loaded (page has already been sent from server to client, so it is not reachable by PHP anymore).
Bacause of this fact you are going to need javascript AJAX for this.
Because you are beginner I suggest you use an ajax function from jQuery javascript framework for this matter. It works the same as javascript function and handles many operations automatically.
As you correctly presumed, you can first display your empty div and then, ... after page is fully loaded, you can call your ajax.
This ajax basically asks PHP script to provide loaded page with data that will be displayed in specified html element.
Code should look like this:
Include this to your PHP file with content that you load:
<script type="text/javascript">http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.2.6/jquery.js</script> <!--loads jquery framework-->
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
//when page is loaded
$.ajax({
url: "ajax.php" //script with your data selection
}).done(function(data) { //when ajax call success
$("#ajax-element").html(data); //insert data returned from ajax.php into div with id ajax-element
});
});
</script>
<div id="ajax-element"></div>
This is PHP ajax file that will return data for you (just echo everything that you want to have in your "ajax-element" div, for example:
<?php
echo "some text";
?>
For more info you can find jquery AJAX specification here.

I'm totally new to RESTful API and html and was wondering if I could get some advice.
Basically, I've made an application with a restful api using RestX, see picture, that can succesfully retrieve info, like a list of strings with node addresses.
And I want to make a HTML page that looks roughly like this (mockup):
I'm totally unsure how to actually do this however. Also, I'm unsure of how to display, for example, the list of strings I've received. In the mockup, the list of registered nodes should dynamically be made from the list received from the application, for example.
I've made a sample HTML text file (from another overflow post), but that doesn't really do anything...
See code:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<script src="the/Path/To/The/Downloaded/JQuery.js"></script>
<script>
//Usually, you put script-tags into the head
function myFunction() {
//This performs a POST-Request.
//Use "$.get();" in order to perform a GET-Request (you have to take a look in the rest-API-documentation, if you're unsure what you need)
//The Browser downloads the webpage from the given url, and returns the data.
$.get( "http://192.168.59.130:8080/api/#/ui/api-docs/#/operation/list/GET/___list___nodes", function( data ) {
//As soon as the browser finished downloading, this function is called.
$('#demo').html(data);
alert( "Load was performed." );
});
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
<p>Click the button to trigger a function.</p>
<button onclick="myFunction()">Click me</button>
<p id="demo"></p>
</body>
</html>
I'm lost, can anybody help?
Currently you are not using the REST APIs, but the URLs to access Restx UI interface.
The first thing you should do is to update the URL you are using to something like: http://192.168.59.130:8080/api/list/nodes
You'll get back a list of entities (at least, that's what the name of the API method suggests) in json that you can use in your javascript to populate the HTML form.
I use RichFaces to develop some web pages, basically I'd like to display a list of my data with DataTable. But my manage bean will take a long time to obtain resource data, which blocks the web page display.
My goal is to dynamically display them, First display the web page (maybe no data yet), then once my manage bean reads one new data, it displays this as a new row in my DataTable, any idea how can I do that? or maybe a similar example is appreciate.
Load the page then fetch data using JavaScrip via an Ajax call. Ajax is very easy to implement using jQuery.
jQuery Ajax Documentation
Example: Untested!! But its something like this..
<head>
<script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.9.1/jquery.min.js" ></script>
<script>
// Run on page load
$(function() {
$.ajax({
url: "getMyData.html",
type: "GET"
}).success(function(data) {
// My data is in "data", if it is html then
$("#myDiv").html(data);
});
});
</script>
</head>
<body>
<h1>Hello</h1>
<div id="myDiv"></div>
</body>
I've been working on a custom CMS in drupal for about two or three weeks now, and I keep running into this same problem. I'm trying to load a dynamically generated url (by extracting the node id of the target drupal page into $resultCut and appending it to the baseurl of the website). This iframe is embedded next to an instance of CKEditor, and the idea is to have the content in the iframe change when the fields in CKEditor are modified. I have the following Jquery:
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
baseurl = urlhere;
url = baseurl+"<?php echo $resultCut ?>"
$('#EmuFrame').attr('src', url);
var HTML = $('#EmuFrame').contents().find('body').html();
alert ( "LOADING COMPLETE" + HTML );
});
$('#edit-field-mobile-page-header-label-0-value').change(function () { // writes changes to the header text to emulaor
var curr = $(this).val();
$('#EmuFrame').contents().find("h1").text(curr);
});
$('#edit-body').keyup(function(e) { // writes changes to the body text to emulator
var curr = $(this).val();
currhead = $('#EmuFrame').contents().find("h1").html();
$('#EmuFrame').contents().find('#content').html("<h1>"+currhead+"</h1>"+curr);
});
where #EmuFrame is the id of an iframe, and the #edit-* tags are the ids of fields in CKEditor that I am monitoring for change. When the user types, the keyup() or change() events is supposed to grab the new html and swap it with the html in the iframe.
As of right now, the LOADING COMPLETE alert fires, but there is no html in the alert. I noticed that the content of the iframe loads AFTER the alert fires, however, which is what led me to believe that it's a problem with the order in which the events trigger.
Further, I had an alert in the callback function of keyup that returned the new html [ alert(curr) ] that was generated when a user started typing, and this alert returns html (although, it is being grabbed from CKEditor). However, the iframe does not reflect any changes. If I append [ alert (currhead) ] though, nothing is alerted at all.
It might be of interest to note that the source url is technically on a different domain than the parent. however, I used a workaround (i'm pretty sure it works, because I've previously gotten the whole html replacement thing working, and then somehow it broke). Also, neither Firebug nor Chrome's console report any XMLHttpRequest errors. Also, I keep getting this error: "Uncaught Syntax error, unrecognized expression: [#disabled]" and I'm not sure what it means, and whether its relevant to my problem as stated above.
That was a ridiculously long plea for help, so THANKS FOR READING, and thank you for any help!!
Your note about about the cross-domain iframe src is worrisome -- you shouldn't be able to access its contents with javascript. Nevertheless:
You have these two lines in quick succession:
$('#EmuFrame').attr('src', url);
var HTML = $('#EmuFrame').contents().find('body').html();
Try waiting for the iframe to load first:
$('#EmuFrame').load(function() {
var HTML = $('#EmuFrame').contents().find('body').html();
}
So I am planning on dynamically changing a page's content by fetching it from another page.
To do so, I used Mootools' Request class:
var tabContent = new Request({
url: 'foo/bar/baz.php',
onSuccess: function(data) {
$('tab_container').innerHTML = data;
}
}).send();
In any case, the HTML is fetched fine, and returns without a hitch. However, I'd like to add some events to THOSE fetched elements (Fx.slide, to be precise), and that requires some js to be included in the requested file.
Upon inspection of the returned data, the javascript is intact. However, it does not show up in the final product. That is, somewhere in between having received the data, and rendering the data (via the innerHTML bit) it seems as though the javascript has been excised out for some reason.
Hm.
add evalScripts: true to the Request options, then include the script in a simple <script></script> block at the bottom of the response.
Suppose I want to embed the latest comic strip of one of my favorite webcomics into my site as a kind of promotion for it. The webcomic has the strip inside of a div with an id, so I figured I can just embed the div in my site, except that I couldn't find any code examples for how to do it (they all show how to embed flash or a whole website).
Can someone please show me (or tell) how it's done?
PS I'd rather not use server side scripting or external services (which is what is often recommended for embedding RSS).
Update - Cross domain request with jQuery (on client side)
Yesterday I was browsing James Padolsey's blog, where he posted a great article, on how to do cross domain request with jQuery, also Chris Heilmann has a nice DEMO.
The principle is to use YQL -> a yahoo api for web page queries, where you receive a JSON with all the html. Happy scraping :)
Scrape remote data with php, load with jQuery
What about considering simple AJAX call, that would intercept the comic element and update with its contents your <div id="update-comic" /> primarily used for this purpose?
Also you will use a simple php to get the remote page, cause you cannot make ajax call on another domain
note: user must have JavaScript enabled, also following code uses jQuery library
Putting it all together
on your page, where you want to display remote comic strip create a div only for this purpose, lets call it update-comic
<div id="update-comic">
<!-- here comes scraped content -->
</div>
write down the php, call it comic-scrape.php, it will download the html from remote page, you should consider caching the response and updating it on a specified interval (e.g. 30min, 1hr, your call.. :))
server performance should not suffer after simple cache checking implementation
<?php
$url = 'http://www.example.com/';
$response = file_get_contents($url);
echo $response;
now comes the jQuery magic, where you make ajax call on your php scraper and take only the relevant element you are interested in. Place this script inside your view page (where you have your <div id="update-comic" />
<script type="text/javascript">
$(function () {
// set all your required variables
var
localUrl = '/comic-scrape.php',
elementId = '#remote-comic-id',
elementToUpdate = $('#update-comic');
// update the local elementToUpdate with elementId contents
// from your php in localUrl
elementToUpdate.load(localUrl + ' ' + elementId;
});
</script>
I hope, I covered everything.
Employing simplexml and xpath
As philfreo suggested in comment, a viable solution could also contain selecting the required id server-side. It is very easy with use of php's simplexml and a little xpath:
<?php
// set remote url and div id to be found
$elementId = 'remote-comic-id';
$url = 'http://www.example.com/';
// instantiate simple xml element and populate from $url
$xml = new SimpleXMLElement($url, null, true);
// find required div by id
$result = $xml->xpath("//div[id={$elementId}]");
// take first element from array, which is our desired div
$div = array_pop($result);
echo $div;
It's impossible because you cannot manipulate iframe/frame content. Using iframe tag will just modify content in tag, but not the src.
Neither with AJAX, because you have to be on the same domain.
So, for example, you can use PHP with cURL or quite simply with fopen.
You can just use an iframe. The content isn't literally on that page, but it looks like it.
Here's an example: http://www.w3schools.com/TAGS/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_iframe
It looks like this:
<iframe src ="http://www.example.com/index.html" width="100%" height="300"></iframe>
<embed src="url of your comic" width="300" height="250" />
