Why does my favicon not show up? - html

The following is used to set the favicon in my html code:
<link rel="icon" type="img/ico" href="img/favicon.ico">
However, the icon does not show. Why?
Note:
I have confirmed that the file is on-disk at the correct path.

Is it really a .ico, or is it just named ".ico"?
What browser are you testing in?
The absolutely easiest way to have a favicon is to place an icon called "favicon.ico" in the root folder. That just works everywhere, no code needed at all.
If you must have it in a subdirectory, use:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/img/favicon.ico" />
Note the / before img to ensure it is anchored to the root folder.

Try this:
<link href="img/favicon.ico" rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" />

Favicons only work when served from a web-server which sets mime-types correctly for served content. Loading from a local file might not work in chromium. Loading from an incorrectly configured web-server will not work.
Web-servers such as lighthttpd must be configured manually to set the mime type correctly.
Because of the likelihood that mimetype assignment will not work in all environments, I would suggest you use an inline base64 encoded ico file instead. This will load faster as well, as it reduces the number of http requests sent to the server.
On POSIX based systems you can base64 encode a file with the base64 command.
To create a base64 encoded ico line use the command:
$ base64 favicon.ico --wrap 0
And insert the output into the line:
<link href="data:image/x-icon;base64,HERE" rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" />
Replacing the word HERE like so:
<link href="data:image/x-icon;base64,AAABAAEAEBAQAAEABAAoAQAAFgAAACgAAAAQAAAAIAAAAAEABAAAAAAAgAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA////AERpOgA5cCcA7vDtAF6jSABllFcAuuCvAK2trQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAFjMzMzMzNxARYzMzMzVBEEERYzMzNhERZxRGMzZxQEA2FER3cRSAgTNxgEEREIQBMzFIARERFEEzNhERARFAATMzYREBEAhBMzMzEYEBFEEzMzNhEQQRQDMzMzcRgEAAMzMzNhERgIEzMzMyERgEQDMzMzMRAEgEMzMzMxERAEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" />

Try adding the profile attribute to your head tag and use "image/x-icon" for the type attribute:
<head profile="http://www.w3.org/2005/10/profile">
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="img/favicon.ico">
If the above code doesn't work, try using the full icon path for the href attribute:
<head profile="http://www.w3.org/2005/10/profile">
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="http://example.com/img/favicon.ico">

My favicon for my HTML website does not show

I'm building a website in HTML, and hosting it via GitHub Pages. You can take a look of it here: http://marcuscodes.me/
It has previously shown normally with this code:
I also tried using favicons:
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="favicon.ico?">
I have tried adding a ? to my path as shown here:
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="favicon.ico?">
However, it still does not show.
I have tried these steps:
Refreshing browser cache
Using different browser
using different device
You can view the full source code here. https://github.com/inkthought-labs/website
Thanks for any help!
In your index.html, you used this to supposedly create the favicon:
<link rel="icon" href="https://i.ibb.co/SBX2vY1/inkthoughtinvis.png">
However, you forgot the type attribute. It should be:
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="https://i.ibb.co/SBX2vY1/inkthoughtinvis.png" />
Additional note: If permitted by copyright licenses, it is best that you download the image to your local storage and then set the location into the href attribute. In the scenario that the website host removes the image, it will not display.
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="https://i.ibb.co/SBX2vY1/inkthoughtinvis.png" />

Favicon is not working in google chrome on my site

I am currently working on this site
I am trying to set favicon but it is not working on google chrome.
I found some questions related to this topic but none of that solved my issue.
I have tried to use png image like,
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://scutops.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/cropped-favicon-1.png" type="image/png" >
Tried to rename the favicon ,
But none of these is working.
Please help me to find this.
Thanks.
Update :
I have also tried with:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://scutops.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/favicon-3.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
still not working
Have you tried converting the .png file to a .ico file using an online favicon generator (like this one)? If you upload an .ico file to the site's root directory, most browsers (including Chrome) should automatically pick it up. Even without a reference in the html head.
This worked for me...
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="assets/img/logo.ico">
Favicon not showing up in Google Chrome
1) Clear your cache. http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95582 And test another browser, lets say safari. How did you import the favicon?
2) How you should add it:
Normal favicon:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
PNG/GIF favicon:
<link rel="icon" type="image/gif" href="favicon.gif" />
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" href="favicon.png" />
in the <head> Tag.

3) Another thing could be the problem that chrome can't display favicons, if it's local (not uploaded to a webserver). Only if the file/icon would be in the downloads directory chrome is allowed to load this data - more information about this can be found here: local (file://) website favicon works in Firefox, not in Chrome or Safari- why?
4) Try to rename it from favicon.{whatever} to {yourfaviconname}.{whatever} but I would suggest you to still have the normal favicon. This has solved my issue on IE.
5) Found another solution for this which works great! I simply added my favicon as Base64 Encoded Image directly inside the tag like this:

6) I can really suggest you this page: http://www.favicon-generator.org/ to create all types of favicons you need.

favicon doesn't work

My favicon isn't working properly. It is located in the root of my project. Do I need the absolute path to my icon?
e.g.: "C:/Users/Damian/www/favicon.ico" Or should I type instead:
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="favicon.ico" >
Is that enough? I have cleared my browser's cookies.
If your favicon is in the same directory as the page:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
Otherwise use this
<link rel="icon" href="your_url/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
Relative paths are fine, as long as the path is relative to the document you are serving.
Have a look at the below link- it may help.
http://www.w3.org/2005/10/howto-favicon
What browser are you using? Keep in mind that it is up to the browser to display the icon, and different browsers may have different ways of how the expect the icon to be shown in the HTML. If you are sure your HTML is correct, it may pay to try a different browser.
The favicon needs only the relative path. It is working fine, but it is a matter of browser's cache. Try to clear your history and cache then try again. Or if you use localhost to access your website, try to use 127.0.0.1

Add favicon to JSF project and reference it in <link>

How do I add a favicon to a JSF project and reference it in <link> element?
I tried as below:
<h:head>
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="images/favicon.ico"/>
...
</h:head>
However, it didn't show any favicon.
A relative href is relative to the current request URI. Likely it resolved to an invalid URL. You need to prepend with the context path so that it becomes relative to the domain root.
Also, the rel has better to be shortcut icon to get it to work in older browsers too.
In case of using an .ico file, you also need to ensure that it's a real .ico file and not some .bmp renamed to .ico. You can generate one here based on several image formats. You can however also just use a .png or .gif file.
All in all, provided that the file is located in
WebContent
|-- images
| `-- favicon.ico
:
then this should do it:
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="#{request.contextPath}/images/favicon.ico"/>
If you've however placed it as a JSF resource in the /resources folder as follows
WebContent
|-- resources
| `-- images
| `-- favicon.ico
:
which would make it accessible by <h:graphicImage name="images/favicon.ico">, then this should do it:
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="#{resource['images/favicon.ico']}"/>

How to reference CSS / JS / image resource in Facelets template?
I used the following and it works in both IE and Chrome
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="#{resource['images/favicon.ico']}" type="image/x-icon" />
Since JSF uses the resources as a container for storing the image file folder, you can do the following;
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="#{request.contextPath}/resources/images/favicon.ico"/>
As a side note, I always include both of these when referencing a favicon:
<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="https://a.staticimageserver.com/img/favicon.ico" />
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="https://a.staticimageserver.com/img/favicon.ico" />

What if the favicon is not named favicon.ico?

Are there any restrictions on naming the favorites icon (favicon) file as anything other than favicon.ico?
I know for sure that it can be named anything, as long as the favicon tag refers to the correct file name.
For example:
<link href="/somefile.ico" type="image/x-icon" rel="icon" />
<link href="/somefile.ico" type="image/x-icon" rel="shortcut icon" />
The code above works just fine in displaying the icon.
What I want to know is does this violate any W3C/HTML specifications or this is permitted usage?
According to W3C, the preferred method is to actually specify the favicon in the html document rather than relying on favicon.ico in the server root.
