I worked for three weeks on the default branch, committing frequently. I would now like to update to a point 3 weeks ago and push/pull etc with default as if those 3 weeks never existed. Ideally, I could say "Mercurial, please treat all work over the past 3 weeks as a new feature branch" so I can continue working on default until I fix what needs to be fixed. Then I can return to my feature branch.
I know I should have just started a feature branch 3 weeks ago, but we all mistakes...
As long has you've haven't pushed to a public repo you can:
update to the point 3 weeks ago
create the named branch
rebase 'ahead commits' on default to the named branch.
You may want to the change the 'Phase' of the named branch to secret so you don't push it accidentally.
If you haven't used Rebase before you will have to enable the extension in File -> Settings -> Extensions.
Otherwise if you have pushed then:
update to the point 3 weeks ago.
Just commit changes (create two heads on default)
When you've done, before pushing merge one default head onto the other default branch.
I'd recommend cloning to a new, local repository from the revision 3 weeks ago. Work on this new repository and then, when ready, push back to parent (the local one).
I like working with clones rather than branches since it allows me to have a simpler view of the statuses. In my case, have an eclipse work space for each repository that I can switch between.
This might not be exactly what you asked for, but it's a valid solution to your need.

2 main branches:

Please see revisions 8 and 9 specifically. I added a 2 separate features in revisions 3 and 4, worked on them separately, merged them into default in revisions 7 and 8. They are not complete at this time.
My question is, did I do this correctly considering that I am not done with the features and did not close the feature branches? The connected blue and pink lines at revision 8, along with the blue extension at revision 9 are confusing me.
I'm pretty new to source control, so any explanations are appreciated.
You just have two heads on your tree, which are at revisions 8 and 9 specifically now. You could run "hg heads" on the command line in that directory to see some textual information about them both. At this point, you could update to either head, make changes and commit, then update to the other head, make changes and commit, etc. Also, you could merge your feature branch into the default and then just have one head. It depends on how long you want to keep your feature branch separate.
More interestingly, are you planning to keep using the "stable" branch? If so, I guess that you could "hg update" to r1, and then merge things from your other branches to there.

I'm fairly new to version control in teams. So far I've mostly used it solo.
I've read that the following workflow is recommended:
Commit locally, pull master, merge master into my branch, merge my
branch into master, push. Several times a week or even day
So that's what I tried to do. However, when I was done with my feature, and tried to push, tortoise hg told me, that this would create new remote heads.
hg help push tells me about two options:
Merge first: Did that
Use -f: I know enough not to do that.
I think I understand the concept of rebasing - which I don't think applies here, since I'm the only one who did anything in this commit tree. Of course I've pulled.
So my question is: How can I resolve this specific situation?
Also, recommendations for where to learn proper version control workflow would be nice. Everything I find tells me what the commands are, but I've failed to find clear instructions on when to use them.
I've added a picture of the project. Commit 147 was mine, and I could push it just fine. All oher commits are also made by me.
hg reports a "head" for every named branch. In your screenshot, you are needing to push rev 154, which is the head of your kjeld branch. It is an outgoing changeset because you are pushing rev 155 and you must therefore push 155's entire history as well. Others will get that branch when they pull your changes and will have a head on their version of kjeld (note that it will most likely not be numbered 154 since those numbers are repo specific). You will be fine though since that head is a close-branch changeset so it will not appear in their default list for hg heads and hg branches.
One way to avoid your current issue is to use bookmarks to temporarily note what that head represents e.g. issue-45, big-feature-2, etc. and only push when merged into mainline development.
For us, we set up a "private" repo for each dev on the server where they store/backup work in progress. It is expected that there are multiple heads, dead branches, and other gunk in these "private" repos. The dev repo, however, only ever has a single head and must pass the build and build tests.
In response to your comment about your "private" branch: When you push your tip you will also push your branch named kjeld. Others who want to work on that code must pull it to get the tip of your development. It will not be a "private" branch.
I've been trying to find actual documentation for Sourcetree without much luck, so I figured I'd ask here. I'm a relative newb when it comes to version control, with my current project being my first effort. I'm using Sourcetree on Windows 7 as a frontend for Mercurial, I've got my development code on my local machine in C:\inetpub, and whenever I do a Commit I then switch Sourcetree over to the cloned repository on my backed up network drive and do a Pull of the changes I just Committed so I've got the development history backed up.
What I'm trying to wrap my head around is using Sourcetree to set up a Debug branch so I can fix bugs on the version of the code running on the production server while simultaneously doing development. Obviously a common need, but I can't grok it. I am expecting there to be two code locations, so I can pause in mid-edit on the Development branch, make changes to Debug, and them come back to my changes in Development and finish them up before merging in the changes to Debug. If that's not how it works that's presumably part of my confusion. Any suggestions on where I can find clarity? Pointers to existing tutorials and the like would be fine, I just haven't been having luck searching Google, and I haven't been able to locate any actual Sourcetree documentation.
NOTE: Based on responses I've seen to other questions I've read about Sourcetree and Mercurial, I'll state upfront I have no interest in discussing outside repository hosting unless somebody can explain why it will help with this problem.
Two things here:
You do not need to change repository to pull, you can also push from your local repository;
You do not need 2 code locations for switching from one branch to the other. It might help, for larger projects, but I suggest you get comfortable with Mercurial before doing so.
So, for number 1, there is a default source or remote repository for every local repo. It is either defined by the user or it is the source repo from where it was cloned. Whether you push or pull, it will default to that same source. You can push/pull to multiple sources as well, but this is not your case at the moment. In the normal workflow, just issue a hg push every time you commit, and your changes will be propagated to the other repo.
For number 2, a Mercurial repo, as you already know, can have multiple branches. When you commit a changeset, it is automatically done on the current branch. In SourceTree, click on the Branch button, and enter a new branch name. The next commit you'll do will be the head (and the start) of your new branch. After that, you can update back and forth between the 2 branches, and your code will change accordingly. That means that you can update at any time to the head of any branch, make some changes, commit, and then jump to another branch, and so on. So no, you do not need multiple repositories.
Normally, the proper practice is to have a default branch (default name is rarely changed!) where you have your current development source. For every issue or feature you are fixing/implementing, create a new branch from the default branch to put your new code. Once that branch has been reviewed and tested, merge it back in the default and close the former.
For your current development, if you need an additional stable and safe trunk, you can create a Production branch, which would be the stable code that will run on your server. Once you are satisfied with the default branch tests, you can then merge it in Production to include your changes up to that point.
As a convention, make sure your server is always running the code from the Production branch, for the more stable code. At least, that is what I understood from your initial question.
Say I do my new feature development either in default, or an entirely new branch made just for the feature for a web site project. When it comes time to push the feature out to the live website, I want to move it to the live branch, which I then hg archive to my apache directory.
Throughout everything, I want to be absolutely sure not to push other, unrelated changes that are not yet ready to be published to the live branch.
Is this even a good idea? Or should I be doing something entirely different?
If the code is in default, how do I push only the one thing I need and not everything to live? If I push just the latest changeset, is it smart enough to send the latest version of those files, or will it only do the changesets?
If the code is in an entirely new branch, do I merge the whole branch into live? How do I get those changes back to my default branch so I see them there too?
I was reading the "Task Based Management" section of the Mercurial Kick Start guide and it mentions merging default into your branch. I found this very confusing and was wondering why you'd ever do this.

HG now has Phases. Change a phase of a changeset to secret and it will not be pushed when you use push. You can do it using TortoiseHG GUI.
In addition to that, be aware that just pushing or pulling something does not automatically change any files in the working directory. It only makes some additional changesets available. Only by using update do you actually change any files in your working dir. (unless you configure hg to update automatically).
In the example you linked, there is a bug fix in the default branch. Bob wants to have this fix in his branch too, so he merges default branch with his branch. This is just an example to see how branching works. You do not have to use it in exactly the same way. If you just begin your Mercurial adventure, then you should better use just one branch until you have a good reason to use more.
For example: 3 developers work on the same project and all of them use just one branch (default). 1 of the developers wants to do a major refactoring of the code. He wants to commit several very unstable changesets (many "in the middle of work"). Doing so in the default branch might upset other developers. That is a good reason to create a branch. After his version is stable enough he will merge his branch into default. While he is doing development in his branch, he wants to be up-to-date with other developers, so he frequently merges default into his branch. Staying in a separate branch for too long might result in difficult merges. Luckily merging is very quick in HG, so merge often.
We are using mercurial in a single repository. We have a master branch and a develop branch (as well as feature branches, but they aren't germane to the issue at hand).
We tag the master branch with releases (5.1.0.102, etc). We do our development on develop.
But now we want to fix a bug in a previous version. There are a lot of questions here on SO about this issue, but none of them seem to explain what I want to do.
What I want to do is this:
Update to the point where we released (say 6.1.1)
Fix a number of bugs in that release
Label that resulting code state as (6.1.2)
Do a build of this new 6.1.2 codebase.
Migrate those fixes into the develop branch
Do this in such a way that I can go back to 6.1.2 and fix bugs there if need be.
I can't seem to do this via updating. I tried to update to the 6.1.1, create a branch, and go from there, but that brings in the tip of the master branch, including all subsequent changes.
Is there a standard way of doing this? Did I explain that correctly so you guys get what I need to do? It seems like this is a pretty common thing to do.
You don't need to explicitly create a branch. The way I would do it is this:
Update to the point where you released (6.1.1 in the master branch).
Make changes and commit them.
Tag the latest commit in master as 6.1.2.
Pull those changes into the develop branch.
Continue working.
If you need to make more changes, then simply repeat the above but using the 6.1.2 tag in the master branch.
You really shouldn't need to create a named branch unless you truly want to have a full-out branch. What you probably want to do is:
update to 6.1.1
make the edits
commit (will create a new un-named branch)
tag that new revision as 6.1.2.
You can then merge that edit into your develop branch
As long as you are updating to a revision earlier than the tip on the Master branch, the commit will make a new branch off of it.
This will leave the version tagged so you can easily get back to it.
