I am trying to find out what FolderInformation and FileInformation are for and how to use them. So far I learned that FolderInformation is more to act on the folder itself and StorageFolder for the folder contents (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13944488/in-metro-whats-the-difference-between-folderinformation-and-storagefolder). But both classes have similar members like CreateFileAsync which makes the difference a bit blurry.
Can someone explain what the purpose of FolderInformation and FileInformation actually is?
I would also appreciate a small example how to use this classes. There's not much to find on the Internet.
If you examine a bit more the differences between FolderStorage and FolderInformation (same thing with the File counterparty), you will see that FolderInformation implements one more interface which is IStorageItemInformation.
Basically this interface will provide metadata information for the file or folder in question. For example in the case of a MP3 music file you could retrieve basic ID3 tag information (track name, artist, ...) and in the case of a JPG image file you could retrieve basic EXIF information (shot date, ...).
Also it provides an event to listen to changes that might occur on those information. I can imagine this can be really useful to update display information in a music player or photo viewer.

I am looking for feedback on a certain directory structure for an application. I realize that this does not follow the classical stack overflow format where there is such a thing as "a correct answer", though think it is interesting nonetheless. To provide meaningful feedback, some context first needs to be understood, so please bear with me.

Two colleagues of mine and I have created an application that uses the Clean Architecture. HTTP requests to routes get turned into request models, which gets handed to use cases, which then spit out a response model that gets handed to a presenter.
The code is fully open source and can be found on GitHub. We also have some docs describing what the main directories are about.
We are thinking about reorganizing our code and would like to get feedback on what we've come up with so far. Primarily amongst the reasons for this reorganization are:
Right now we do not have a nice place to put things that are not part of our domain, yet somehow bind to it. For instance authorization code, which knows about donation ids (with authorization not being part of the core domain, while donation ids are).
It's nice to group cohesive things together. Our Donation code is cohesive and our Membership Application code is cohesive, while both don't depend on each other. This is closely related to the notion of Bounded Contexts in Domain Driven Design. Right now these contexts are not explicitly visible in our code, so it is easy to make them dependent on each other, especially when you are not familiar with the domain.
These are the contexts we have identified so far. This is a preliminary list and just to give you an idea, and not the part I want feedback on.
Donation
Membership
Form support stuff (validation of email, generation of IBAN, etc)
The part I want feedback on is the directory structure we think of switching to:
src/
Context_1/
DataAccess/
Domain/
Model/
Repositories/
UseCases/
Validation/
Presentation/
Authorization/
Context_2/
Factories/
Infrastructure/
tests/
Context_1/
Unit/
Integration/
EdgeToEdge/
System/
TestDoubles/
Context_2/
The Authorization/ folder directly inside of the context would provide a home for our currently oddly placed authorization code in Infrastructure. Other code not part of our domain, yet binding to it, can go directly into the context folder, and gets its own folder if there is a cohesive/related bunch of stuff amongst it, such as authorization.
I'm happy to provide additional information you need to provide useful feedback.

There are both technical and non-technical ways to address this issue:
You can enforce stricter separation through class libraries. It is more obvious you are taking a dependency on something if you have to import a dll / reference another project. It will also prevent circular dependencies.
Code reviews / discipline is a non-technical way to handle it.
I've been using Hexagonal Architecture with DDD where the domain is in the middle. Other concerns such as repositories are represented by interfaces. Your adapters then take a reference to the domain, but never in the other direction. So you might have an IRepository in your domain, but your WhateverDatabaseRepository sits in it's own project. It is then the responsibility of the application services / command handlers to co-ordinate your use cases and load the adapters. This is also where you would apply cross-cutting concerns such as authorization.
I'd recommend watching Greg Young videos (try this one) and reading Vaughn Vernon's IDDD as it goes into how to structure applications and deals with questions like yours. (sorry that my answer is basically watch a 6hr video and read a 600+ page book, but they both really helped clarify some of the more "wooly" aspects of DDD for me)
As an example, see https://github.com/gregoryyoung/m-r/blob/master/SimpleCQRS/CommandHandlers.cs
Is it possible to create an automatically generated Rhythm game for Flash Action Script 3 ?
But not just randomly generated, generated from the notes of a song. Or is that something I have to do manually?
How would I go about doing either of these?
I am currently following this tutorial: http://www.flashgametuts.com/tutorials/as3/how-to-make-a-rhythm-game-in-as3-part-4/ so perhaps it can be made to fit around this? (Go to the final part and View Source to see the full thing)
Thanks!
Depending on what you mean by rhythm game, check out the computeSpectrum() function of the SoundMixer class: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/media/SoundMixer.html#computeSpectrum()
There's an example of it working in the link, but basically what it does is take a snapshot of the current sound wave and puts normalised (-1 to 1) values in a ByteArray. What you do with those values is up to you - e.g. you might use them as a height field to generate terrain for example.
Repeat this every frame, and you get the gist
Welcome to SO!
First off, there is nothing already built in, to my knowledge. There may be something lurking around Google that someone else wrote, but you'd need to dig around for that (though I assume you already did.)
Generated from the notes of a song. Hmm, this will take some serious ingenuity and coding on your part. I'll point you in the right direction, but it is up to you to write the code. No one here will do it for you, but we'll happily help with specific problems in your code.
The crazy (yet potentially more fun) approach MAY BE to derive the data in a similar manner that an audio visualizer does...but I can't guarantee that will work. This would work best with MIDI-generated, single instrument songs. Here is a tutorial on visualizers.
A second approach may be to actually convert MIDI files directly. Again, I can't guarantee it will work, but it would theoretically be possible, seeing how MIDI files store data to begin with. Here's an answer on playing MIDI files, to get you started. Consider looking through their class.
However, the "easiest" approach would be to come up with some sort of system by which you store the note values for a song. You can manually enter the values in an array, or in a data file (such as XML) that you can load.
I put "easiest" in quotes because you'd have to account for a LOT of information - not just note values, but note duration, rhythm, and rests.
Anyway, those are just a few ideas to get you started. Good luck!
I have an old SWF project file which is a series of png sequence to produce a 3D tour of numerous stadiums (If you can get it to load http://tinyurl.com/7h2zpcb). When I initially created it I never intended it to be published on the web (it was a university project) however I now would quite like to show it on the internet. The structure is of a main timeline with 4 stadiums each with a png sequence, then, when clicking on one of the stadiums, 4 more png sequences. The only problem is that it is all in one file and is over 12mb, plus has no pre-loader.
It is written in AS3 and is rather complicated as I used movie names and trimming to have reusable functions. It does however have global variables already set-up if this could help.
I have 2 questions. First, is there an easy method of separating out the project movies to 5 individual swf files. i.e main timeline, and each individual png sequence? Or will I need to copy and paste and copy assets over to each FLA file?
Secondly, would it just be easier to try using a preloaded and hoping that users wait for the project to download?
If you have any thoughts on this please give them. Is there a way to optimise the project in another way I am unaware of? As a side note there are a lot of pngs and total over 300mb when combined so I think XML is out of the question?
Thank you for your time. Any suggestions are welcome
For completeness' sake.
I did some research and tests and realised the time it would take to change the project to use any other technology would be too great for my needs. I simply just added a pre-loader to the site and saved myself a lot of extra time. When linking to the site I affix a message explaining that is for an offline installation and there may be a long load-time.
Hopefully this will help others in the future.
Thank you to Marty Wallace, shaunhusain and grapefrukt for their time and advice on this.
I am not able to put proper title for this question, but i will try to explain it here.
If I know that there are many files in this directory:
https://mail.google.com/mail/e/
like
https://mail.google.com/mail/e/320
https://mail.google.com/mail/e/ezweb_ne_jp.059
...
and many more.
But I can not list them, since directory listing might be denied as in above case.
Is there any way to list all such files. Or any workaround?
No, it is not possible. As far as I know you cannot get the list of all files or directories without the directory listing enabled. This cannot be done directly or there is no easy way to do this.
If you really want to find out the list of files, you will have to crawl the site and find all the links that are pointed to that directory. However, this method is not guaranteed to give you list of all files and directories as there may be many files which are not linked from anywhere and are just present there, some files which might be accessed in only some specific cases, etc. Also, if the sites see lot of traffic from your user or IP they might just ban your from the website.
No. You can't.
At best you could spider the entire web and look for urls that refer to this directory, but unless you can look into the directory in browse mode, it is impossible to get a listing of what's in there.
In real world terms, I've got a cardboard box here, and I'll tell you there's one jelly bean in there. Tell me what else is in there. Think this is possible?
If directory listing is disabled by server, then you can not have list of files.
You can try to do such kind of brute force, generate all possibilities of filenames.
When you receive HTTP 200, filename is valid.
But don't try to do this on public web sites, you can be blacklisted or something like this.
I was wondering if anyone knew of an application that would take a GEDCOM genealogy file and convert it to HTML format for viewing and publishing on the web. I'd like to have separate html files for each individual and perhaps additional files for other content as well. I know there are some tools out there but I was wondering if anyone used any tools and could advise on this. I'm not sure what format to look for such applications. They could be Python or php files that one can edit, or even JavaScript (maybe) or just executable files.
The next issue might be appropriate for a topic in itself. Export of GEDCOM to RDF. My interest here would be to align the information with specific vocabularies, such as BIO or REL which both are extended from FOAF.
Thanks,
Bruce
Like Rob Kam said, Ged2Html was the most popular such program for a long time.
GRAMPS can also create static HTML sites and has the advantage of being free software and having a native XML format which you could easily modify to fit your needs.
Several years ago, I created a simple Java program to turn gedcom into xml. I then used xslt to generate html and rdf. The html I generate is pretty rudimentary, so it would probably be better to look elsewhere for that, but the rdf might be useful to you:
http://jay.askren.net/Projects/SemWeb/
There are a number of these. All listed at http://www.cyndislist.com/gedcom/gedcom-to-web-page-conversion/
Ged2html used to be the most popular and most versatile, but is now no longer being developed. It's an executable, with output customisable through its own scripting syntax.
Family Historian http://www.family-historian.co.uk will create exactly what you are looking for, eg one file per person using the built in Web Site creator. As will a couple of the other Major genealogy packages. I have not seen anything for the RDF part of your question.
I have since tried to produce a Genealogy application using Semantic MediaWiki - MediaWiki, the software behind Wikipedia, and Semantic MediaWiki includes various extensions related to the Semantic Web. I thought it is very easy to use with the forms and the ability to upload a GEDCOM but some feedback from people into genealogy said that it appeared too technical and didn't seem to offer anything new.
So, now the issue is whether to stay with MediaWiki and make it more user friendly or create an entirely new application that allows for adding and updating data in a triple store as well as displaying. I'm not sure how to generate a family tree graphical view of the data, like on sites like ancestry.com, where one can click on a box to see details about the person and update that info or one could click on a right or left arrow around a box to navigate the tree. The data comes from SPARQL queries sent to the data set/triple store both when displaying the initial view and when navigating the tree, where an Ajax call is needed to get more data.
