Chrome extension: access address bar programmatically? - google-chrome

I'm trying to develop a Chrome extension that would allow me to directly type into the address bar after I open a new tab. However, I couldn't find a way to access the address bar programmatically. Could anyone help me on this issue?
Thank you!!

Google Chrome Extension to handle certain links

I need to create a simple Chrome extension that will open telephone links in Gmail with a certain application (Cisco Jabber) instead of the default (Google Hangouts).
I've tried doing some research and haven't found anything that indicates this is possible. Is this something that a Chrome extension can do? If so, can someone point me in the right direction on how to get started, please?

Can you help me guys restore the default Google Chrome User Interface? My chrome suddenly restarted and when it opened again this new UI popuped. I don't know if this is a new version of Chrome or Not. Let me know guys thanks! Added screenshot also
Open a new tab and goto chrome://flags/#top-chrome-md (may have to type it in the address bar) and change it's value to Non-material
If the # link doesn't work, search for Material Design in the browser's top chrome

How can i create a shortcut to close the Download bar in Google Chrome (Windows)

I've done a bit of searching and from what i see there is no such shortcut. There is however this extension for Google Chrome that does this, it automatically closes the download bar after 5 seconds. However i generally avoid installing extensions. Is there any way to make such a shortcut? Something that seems so small and irrelevant can really make a difference. Thanks in advance.
there is a chrome extension called Always Clear Downloads.
User Reviews:
•First extension that clears the download bar and hides it afterwards.
•I have been looking for an extension that does this! Thank you. Works very well hiding the download bar after the download has completed. Saves a click.
