For some reason my favicon doesn't show up on my website. I tested mydomain.com/favicon.ico and I can see the icon.I'm using latest version of safari.
I'm using the code below in my head tags. What's the issue? Tks

You are most likely using Internet Explorer to test the page. IE doesn't support anything but the ICO format, and your favicon is a png.
Use http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/ or similar to convert the file to ICO.
Use this:

Have you tried converting the .png file to a .ico file using an online favicon generator (like this one)? If you upload an .ico file to the site's root directory, most browsers (including Chrome) should automatically pick it up. Even without a reference in the html head.

5) Found another solution for this which works great! I simply added my favicon as Base64 Encoded Image directly inside the tag like this:

I had a problem with displaying my favicon in Chrome. It works fine in FireFox, but I can't get it to display in Chrome. Also, something else I would like to ask is if you have to actually have a website on the web to display favicons because I took the link to the favicon from this website and tried it on my html code and it worked just fine. Something else to note is that the file is up a directory, so I don't want people to correct me on the ../ that appears in the code. Like I said, it works in FireFox. Thanks in advance.

No, you don't have to have the website on the web to view favicons in Chrome. It happens because Chrome old versions do not support favicon hosted on your computer. The favicon has to be hosted on an internet server. Use a photo hosting website. I recommend ImageShack.
After, just do this:

Major browsers support PNG, JPG and GIF as extensions of the favicon. It doesn't has to be .ico, but it's good to use it.
Just add the following lines to your head tag. That will supports the major browsers.

<link rel="icon" type="image/gif" href="http://www.example.com/image.gif">

I have a favicon icon which isn't showing up in Chrome (I'm not sure about other browsers as I only use Chrome) but the strange thing is if I type the path to the icon in the URL bar it shows up!

Some where able to get an updated favicon by adding an URL parameter: ?v=1 after the link href which changes the resource link and therefore loads the favicon without cache (thanks #Stanislav).

Generate favicons
I can really suggest you this page: http://www.favicon-generator.org/ to create all types of favicons you need.
I read a bunch of different entries till I finally found a solution that worked for my scenario (ASP.NET MVC4 project).
Instead of using the filename favicon.ico for my icon, I renamed it to something else, ie myIcon.ico. Then I just used exactly what Domi posted:

And this worked!
It's not a caching issue because I tested this with Fiddler - a request for favicon never occurred, even if I cleared my cache "From the beginning of time". I believe it's just some odd bug with chrome?
Upload your favicon.ico to the root directory of your website and that should work with Chrome. Some browsers disregard the meta tag and just use /favicon.ico
Go figure?.....
I also experienced the same thing. I found out that my favicon.ico had not been processed as a legitimate shortcut icon. I understand that favicons must be scaled to 16x16 and follow the Microsoft Icon format.

Internet Explorer does not support a PNG favicon.
What you should do, is setup your <link tag like so:

For IE, and legacy browsers, also keep a less-pretty (by the fact it's an ICO, not intentionally!) version of your icon in .ico format in the root of your site named favicon.ico. You can use http://icoconverter.com/ to convert your PNG to an ICO. Don't just rename favicon.png to favicon.ico and expect it to work.

I'm able to show the icon without problem on Firefox, but on Internet Explorer 7, the icon cannot be shown. Can someone please paste the code and try on your Internet Explorer 7? What missing did i do?

Try cleaning the cache, favIcons gets cached until "the end of eternity".
I normally, to be sure, upload my icon to http://www.favicon.cc/ and re-download it from there. Works every time!
Saving a JPEG of GIF file as .ico might work in some browsers. But .ico is actually a different file format.
