I have a table with:
vegetable name -- calcium contents -- Potassium contents -- vitamins -- fibers-- price (etc)
Let's say there are 5 entries (rows) in the table and I have to initially feed the data manually, like a first one time data feeding.
My requirement/problem is:
On a GUI when I select a vegetable name from a drop down menu I should get the contents displayed and then all of them should get added to get final score except the 'price'.
On the GUI if I select the 'vegetable name' and any one of the other 'property' (like 'fibers') then only that value should be displayed. e.g query-- spinach, fiber ? answer spinach-fiber = 20 unit., or spinach-vitamins = 40units etc.
I also want help in what type of database I should use here and how to populate the data for accessing it in the program later on. I believe its a simple data table of small size so what is the most efficient way of doing this?
Specific help with code will be of great help as I am absolutely new to java and netbeans.
Also, can I have a separate GUI for adding/appending further data from user in the same table? If yes, how is it done please?

Seems like you need to learn about JDBC first. Just to clarify connecting to a database inside the IDE is generally used for more development/administrative type duties and you WONT be using it in your Swing program.
So for example you need to load a set of test data to test a function you would typically use either the MySQL workbench or load it via the IDE. However you will not connect this way when you run a program.
What you need to learn is how to connect to a database from a front end, how to execute a query and how to display the query. At this point I would suggest getting a couple of books on JDBC or even doing a google search for JDBC introduction tutorials.
Get to learn JDBC without thinking too much about the front end. Do a couple of examples and then once you are familiar with JDBC then work on the front end.
You might want to spend time on learning basic SQL as well as this will be needed to properly query your database. I am assuming you have not done any SQL.

Just remember the IDE(Netbeans) basically uses JDBC to allow you to connect and manipulate data. So while it is based on JDBC the IDE database explorer is NOT the tool you will be using when programming your swing interface.

So I'm kind of stumped.
I have a MySql project that involves a database table that is being manipulated and altered by scripts on a regular basis. This isn't so unusual, but I need to automate a script to run (after hours, when changes aren't happening) that would save the result of the following:
SHOW CREATE TABLE [table-name];
This command generates the ready-to-run script that would create the (empty) table in it's current state.
In SqlWorkbench and Navicat it displays the result of this SHOW command in a field in a result set, as if it was the result of a SELECT statement.
Ideally, I want to take into a variable in a procedure, and change the table name; adding a '-mm-dd-yyyy' to end of it, so I could show the day-to-day changes in the table schema on an active server.
However, I can't seem to be able to do that. Unlike a Select result set, I can't use it like that. I can't get it in a variable, or save it to a temporary, or physical table or anything. I even tried to return this as a value in a function, from which I got the error that a function cannot return a result set - which explains why it's displayed like one in the db clients.
I suspect that this is a security thing in MySql? If so, I can totally understand why and see the dangers exposed to a hacker, but this isn't a public-facing box at all, and I have full root/admin access to it. Hopefully somebody has already tackled this problem before.
This is on MySql 8, btw.

What I'd really -like- to do is this:

But this seems to be mixing apples and oranges, as SHOW and SELECT aren't created equal, although they both seem to return the same sort of object

What is absent from this paragraph is any mention of treating the results of SHOW commands like the results of SELECT queries in other contexts. There is no support for setting a variable to the result of a SHOW command, or using INTO, or running SHOW in a subquery.
So you can capture the result returned by a SHOW command in a client programming language (Java, Python, PHP, etc.), and I suggest you do this.
In theory, all the information used by SHOW CREATE TABLE is accessible in the INFORMATION_SCHEMA tables (mostly TABLES and COLUMNS), but formatting a complete CREATE TABLE statement is a non-trivial exercise, and I wouldn't attempt it. For one thing, there are new features in every release of MySQL, e.g. new data types and table options, etc. So even if you could come up with the right query to produce this output, in a couple of years it would be out of date and it would be a thankless code maintenance chore to update it.
The closest solution I can think of, in pure MySQL, is to regularly clone the table structure (no data), like so:
CREATE TABLE backup_20220618 LIKE my_table;
As far as I know, to get your hands on the full explicit CREATE TABLE statement, as a string, would require the use of an external tool like mysqldump which was designed specifically for that purpose.

I've searched all around about this problem, but I didn't really found a source of knowledge about this, so I'm sorry if this problem seems basic to you, but for me is rather quite intriguing due the fact that I'm having hard time to guess what keywords to use on google in order to retrieve proper info.
Problem Description :
As a matter of fact, i have to issues that i don't know how to deal in a MySQL instance installed in a laptop in a windows environment:
I have a DB in MySQL with 50 tables, of with 15 or 20 tables are tables with original data. The other tables were tables that i generated from the original data tables, in order to properly create tables that would allow me to analyze data in PowerBI. The original data tables are fed by dumps from a ERP Database.
My issue is the following:
How would one automate the process of receiving cumulative txt/csv files (via pen-drive or any other transfer mechanism), store those files into a folder and then update the existing tables with the new information? Is there any reference of best practices to deal with such a scenario?
How can i maintain the good shape of my database with the successive data integration, I mean, how can I make my database scalable and responsive?
Can you point me some sources that would help me with this?
At the moment I imported data into tables, in 2 steps:
1st - I created the table structure with the Workbench import wizard help ( I had to do it this way because the tables have a lot of fields - dozens of them, literally, and those fields need to be in the database). I also inserted primary keys and indexes in those tables;
2nd - I Managed to load the data from the files into those tables, using LOAD DATA IN FILE command.
Some of the fields of the tables created with the import wizard, were created as data type text, with is not necessary in this scenario. I would like to revert those fields to data type NVARCHAR(255) or something, However there are a lot of field to alter the data type and in multiple tables at this point, and i was wondering if i can write a query to do the job of creating all the ALTER TABLES statements i need.
So my issue here is: is it safe to alter the data type in multiple fields in multiple columns (in this case i would like to change fields with datatype text to NAVARCHAR(255))? What is the best way to do this? Can you point me to some sources or best practices for this, please?

You need a scripting language, not a UI. See mysql commandline tool, the shell of your OS, etc, etc.

I'm a java dev who uses Mysql Workbench as a database client and IntelliJ IDEA as an IDE. Every day I do SQL queries to the database from 5 up to 50 times a day.
Is there a convenient way to save and re-run frequently used queries in Mysql Workbench/IntelliJ IDEA so that I can:
avoid typing a full query which has already been used again
smoothly access a list of queries I've already used (e.g by auto-completion)
If there is no way to do it using Mysql Workbench / IDEA, could you please advise any good tools providing this functionality?

Create Stored Procedures, one per query (or sequence of queries). Give them short names (to avoid needing auto-completion).
For example, to find out how many rows in table foo (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM foo;).
One-time setup:

You can pass arguments in in order to make minor variations. Passing in a table name is somewhat complex, but numbers of dates, etc, are practical and probably easy.
If you have installed SQLyog for your mysql then you can use Favorites menu option in which you can save your query and in one click it will automatically writes the saved query on Query Editor.
The previous answers are correct - depending on the version of the Query Browser they are either called Favorites or Snippets - the problem being you can't create sub-folders to group them. And keeping tabs open is an option - but sometimes the browser 'dies' - and you're back to ground 0. So the obvious solution I came up with - create a database table! I have a few 'metadata' fields for descriptions - the project a query is associated to; problem the query solves; and the actual query.
You could keep your query library in an SQL file and load that when WB opens (it's automatically opened when you restart WB and that file was open on last close). When you want to run a specific query place the caret in it's text and press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on Mac) to run only this query. The organization of that SQL file is totally up to you. You have more freedom than any "favorites" solution can give you. You can even have more than one file with grouped statements.
Additionally, MySQL Workbench has a query history (see the Output Tab), which is saved to disk, so you can return to a query even month's after you wrote it.
I would like to implement a custom database initialization strategy so that I can:
generate the database if not exists
if model change create only new tables
if model change create only new fields without dropping the table and losing the data.

You can use a tool like SQL Compare to script changes.
There is a reason why this doesn't exist yet. It is very complex and moreover IDatabaseInitializer interface is not very prepared for such that (there is no way to make such initialization database agnostic). Your question is "too broad" to be answered to your satisfaction. With your reaction to #Eranga's correct answer you simply expect that somebody will tell you step by step how to do that but we will not - that would mean we will write the initializer for you.
What you need to do what you want?
You must have very good knowledge of SQL Server. You must know how does SQL server store information about database, tables, columns and relations = you must understand sys views and you must know how to query them to get data about current database structure.
You must have very good knowledge of EF. You must know how does EF store mapping information. You must be able to explore metadata get information about expected tables, columns and relations.
Once you have old database description and new database description you must be able to write a code which will correctly explore changes and create SQL DDL commands for changing your database. Even this look like the simplest part of the whole process this is actually the hardest one because there are many other internal rules in SQL server which cannot be violated by your commands. Sometimes you really need to drop table to make your changes and if you don't want to lose data you must first push them to temporary table and after recreating table you must push them back. Sometimes you are doing changes in constraints which can require temporarily turning constrains off, etc. There is good reason why tools which do this on SQL level (comparing two databases) are probably all commercial.
Even ADO.NET team doesn't implemented this and they will not implement it in the future. Instead they are working on something called migrations.

That is true that ObjectContext can return you script for database creation - that is exactly what default initializers are using. But how it could help you? Are you going to parse that script to see what changed? Are you going to execute that script in another connection to use the same code as for current database to see its structure?
Yes you can create a new database, move data from the old database to a new one, delete the old one and rename a new one but that is the most stupid solution you can ever imagine and no database administrator will ever allow that. Even this solution still requires analysis of changes to create correct data transfer scripts.
Automatic upgrade is a wrong way. You should always prepare upgrade script manually with help of some tools, test it and after that execute it manually or as part of some installation script / package. You must also backup your database before you are going to do any changes.
The best way to achieve this is probably with migrations:

I have reached the limit of RAM in analyzing large datasets in R. I think my next step is to import these data into a MySQL database and use the RMySQL package. Largely because I don't know database lingo, I haven't been able to figure out how to get beyond installing MySQL with hours of Googling and RSeeking (I am running MySQL and MySQL Workbench on Mac OSX 10.6, but can also run Ubuntu 10.04).
Is there a good reference on how to get started with this usage? At this point I don't want to do any sort of relational databasing. I just want to import .csv files into a local MySQL database and do the subsetting in with RMySQL.
I appreciate any pointers (including "You're way off base!" as I'm new to R and newer to large datasets... this one's around 80 mb)
The documentation for RMySQL is pretty good - but it does assume that you know the basics of SQL. These are:
creating a database
creating a table
getting data into the table
getting data out of the table
Step 1 is easy: in the MySQL console, simply "create database DBNAME". Or from the command line, use mysqladmin, or there are often MySQL admin GUIs.
Step 2 is a little more difficult, since you have to specify the table fields and their type. This will depend on the contents of your CSV (or other delimited) file. A simple example would look something like:

id INT(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY,
height FLOAT(3,2)
);
Which says create a table with 2 fields: id, which will be the primary key (so has to be unique) and will autoincrement as new records are added; and height, which here is specified as a float (a numeric type), with 3 digits total and 2 after the decimal point (e.g. 100.27). It's important that you understand data types.
Step 3 - there are various ways to import data to a table. One of the easiest is to use the mysqlimport utility. In the example above, assuming that your data are in a file with the same name as the table (mydata), the first column a tab character and the second the height variable (with no header row), this would work:
mysqlimport -u DBUSERNAME -pDBPASSWORD DBNAME mydata
Step 4 - requires that you know how to run MySQL queries. Again, a simple example:
select * from mydata where height > 50;
Means "fetch all rows (id + height) from the table mydata where height is more than 50".
Once you have mastered those basics, you can move to more complex examples such as creating 2 or more tables and running queries that join data from each.
Then - you can turn to the RMySQL manual. In RMySQL, you set up the database connection, then use SQL query syntax to return rows from the table as a data frame. So it really is important that you get the SQL part - the RMySQL part is easy.
There are heaps of MySQL and SQL tutorials on the web, including the "official" tutorial at the MySQL website. Just Google search "mysql tutorial".
Personally, I don't consider 80 Mb to be a large dataset at all; I'm surprised that this is causing a RAM issue and I'm sure that native R functions can handle it quite easily. But it's good to learn new skill such as SQL, even if you don't need them for this problem.
I have a pretty good suggestion. For 80MB use SQLite. SQLite is a super public domain, lightweight, super fast file-based database that works (almost) just like a SQL database.

You don't have to worry about running any kind of server or permissions, your database handle is just a file.
Also, it stores all data as a string, so you don't even have to worry about storing the data as types (since all you need to do is emulate a single text table anyway).

P.S. I'm also a little surprised that your script is choking on 80mb. It's not possible in R to just seek through the file in chunks without opening it all up in memory?
The sqldf package might give you an easier way to do what you need: http://code.google.com/p/sqldf/. Especially if you are the only person using the database.

database setup
writing the create table statement which defines each table
importing and exporting to and from the database

I agree with what's been said so far. Though I guess getting started with MySQL (databases) in general is not a bad idea for the long if you are going to deal with data. I mean I checked your profile which says finance PhD student. I don't know if that means quant. finance, but it is likely that you will come across really large datasets in your career. I you can afford some time, I would recommend to learn something about databases. It just helps.
The documentation of MySQL itself is pretty solid and you can a lot of additional (specific) help here at SO.
I run MySQL with MySQL workbench on Mac OS X Snow Leopard too. So here´s what helped me to get it done comparatively easy.
I installed MAMP , which gives my an local Apache webserver with PHP, MySQL and the MySQL tool PHPmyadmin, which can be used as a nice webbased alternative for MySQL workbench (which is not always super stable on a Mac :) . You will have a little widget to start and stop servers and can access some basic configuration settings (such as ports through your browser) . It´s really one-click install here.
Install the Rpackage RMySQL . I will put my connection string here, maybe that helps:
Create your databases with MySQL workbench. INT and VARCHAR (for categorical variables that contain characters) should be the field types you basically need at the beginning.
Try to find the import routine that works best for you. I don't know if you are a shell / terminal guy – if so you'll like what was suggested by neilfws. You could also use LOAD DATA INFILE which is I prefer since it's only one query as opposed to INSERT INTO (line by line)
If you specify the problems that you have more accurately, you'll get some more specific help – so feel free to ask ;)
I assume you have to work a lot with time series data – there is a project (TSMySQL) around that use R and relational databases (such as MySQL, but also available for other DBMS) to store time series data. Besides you can even connect R to FAME (which is popular among financers, but expensive). The last paragraph is certainly nothing basic, but I thought it might help you to consider if it´s worth the hustle to dive into it a little deeper.
