Of all the CSS issues out there, the height paramaters – which should be fairly easy – always vex me.
I'm developing a calendar component for a ExpressionEngine-driven client website. I'm using SolSpace's Calendar plugin (which is fantastic on the back end, BTW), and the templates that comes with it is table-based.
I wanted to make a CSS-based template and I'm stuck on how to manage the height of the cells.
Here's what it looks like now: http://cornerstonearts.hostasaurus.com/calendar
Initially, I set up the cells so that they would expand when the number of events exceeded the available space. I did it as you would expect: min-height:100%; overflow-y:hidden;
I also applied the same settings to the containing DIVs, which make up each week row, and the month container.
The problem was that empty cells collapsed completely, while overflowing cells expanded independently of one another. The latter pushed open the week rows appropriately, but the other day cells within that row would not expand to fill them. As a result, the borders were all out of whack (see attachment).
So I changed the min-height to 120px, but then they don't expand at all. I also tried a combination of height:120px; min-height:100%; overflow-y:hidden; but that didn't work, either.
How do I make it so that the cells expand, and expand the other days in the week with them, when needed, but retain a minimum height when they are empty.
As always, I am super appreciative of any assistance.
Thanks,
ty
You say the templates are table-based. Do you mean html tables exactly? If so I would put the borders you have on your screenshot on the <td>s not on the divs.
The trouble with css is that individual <div>s don't know what the height of each other are unless they are nested inside each other which is an unworkable solution for what you are trying to achieve.
Actually, if it's an events calendar then it is tabular data, it's a table of events. There is nothing wrong with tables per se. Just using them like people did in the old days to lay out an entire website.

I have some divs, and I want them to start filling the main div vertically, and then cause the main div to scroll horizontally.
Currently, I'm using float:left on child divs, but it does exactly the opposite: it starts filling the main div horizontally, and then the main div scrolls vertically.
The number of rows may differ based on screen size, so I can't create a table for this purpose.
table + some javascript hacks may allow me to do this, but I prefer a CSS (without any javascript) way. Because this code will run on mobile apps, and javascript will slow down the web app.
This is my current code, and here's the result of my current code. But I want something like this.
UPDATE: As #goliney suggested, seems that it can be done with css-columns. I created this example right now.
Now, there are these two problems:
While it's working good, it still needs some javascript to determinate number of visible columns (column-count) in the page. Although it's a minor javascript process, is there any way to do it in CSS, too?
Also, I prefer to show a little bit of fifth column, so user can know that this list is scrollable horizontally. But columns-count can't accept some float value (like 4.2), it only accepts integer values. So how can I do it?
As #goliney suggested, css3 columns can help.
I've created an example of using css3 columns in this issue, here.
However, it needs javascript to figure out count of columns, or since I'm targeting tablets, I can create some predefined classes using media queries.
Second, I needed some way to show a little bit of next column, so user can know that this list can be scrolled horizontally.
I've found that if I set a margin-left and then take it back into it's right place using translateX, it'll happen correctly.
So this is the final code for container div:
.main {
column-count: 4;
column-gap: 40px;
height:480px;
margin-left:80px;
transform: translateX(-80px);
}
(I removed prefixed properties here, but they're available in jsFiddle)
And this is the final result in jsFiddle.
I have two DIV elements side-by-side, to create two columns. The two elements both have a fixed height of ~200px (calculated based on window height). I would like the content to overflow from the left DIV into the right, ONLY when the first DIV is full.
Unfortunately, I can't use CSS columns, since it automatically balances content across the columns, instead of filling the first column completely before overflowing.
So far the only option I've found (including here on SO) involves JS, and since the content may include HTML (including block elements), the use of JS is just about my least desirable approach.
Thanks in advance :)
You want something called CSS regions and it is only a working draft atm.
"The CSS Regions module allows content from one or more elements to flow through one or more boxes called CSS Regions..."
Until then, I'd go with a polyfill.
I'm working on a MVC application and am having some trouble with the HTML/CSS layout in regards to one of the partials that we have.
The shell of the application contains two columns that expand to be the height of the column with the most content. The left column contains the navigation for the app. The right column is the content area.
I've managed to get this part working appropriately.
Where I'm having issues is that inside for some pages, the content area (right column) needs to be split into two columns. I need both of these columns to dictate the height of the content area, which in turn would dictate the height of the main navigation.
Any input would be incredibly useful! Thanks!
EDIT I got it working, but am not entirely happy with the solution. It requires me to use inline-block, which reads white-space. As a result I used the comment across two lines strategy, but I'm afraid that this would get deleted by somebody while editing/cleaning the project up after the fact.

I'd imagine that, if you simply added the columns they would automatically fill the space up thus dictating the height of 'content'.
However, if you're floating the columns then the containing element won't pick up their height. In this case you'll need to add, either a cleared element below the columns, or, better add 'clearfix'.
I have a large table inside a scrollable div. The table contains a person's name, followed by his details. I need the first column of the table to stay fixed while scrolling horizontally, so that the person's name stays visible while look at his details. Similar to this: HTML table with horizontal scrolling (first column fixed)
However, my table is also very large in the y direction, so when I scroll down, the person's name should also scroll up with his details. This almost solves my problem, but not the vertical scrolling.
Please help!
I was trying to solve fixed column issue where a table is inside other DIV control. While solving that, I faced the same issue and found solution via setting up container at ScrollTop property on event of "onscroll". I applied below style to the container:
.floatingStyle
{
position:relative;
background-color:#829DC0;
top:0px;
}
You can look complete solution here: http://rajputyh.blogspot.in/2011/12/floatingfixed-table-header-in-html-page.html
There are few browser related issues which are also handled there.
For vertical scrolling the problem is keeping the headers and footer fixed. The best way to do this is to actually have three tables - one for headers, one for the data (in a scrollable DIV) and one for the footer. If the table column widths are fixed then that's all you need to do. If they aren't then you'll need to use JavaScript to adjust them. But there is a trick here - a table with AUTO column widths can't be guaranteed to use widths that you specify in JS, especially if a column is empty, or a header text item is quite long.
I've handled this by setting the headers width based on the data, finding if the browser resized and then changing the data widths. Once they are close I then set the table to FIXED mode for the final adjustment.
Have a look here:
http://hifi.goneill.co.nz/cd.php
Click on Jazz, Classical buttons etc to see the tables. Also read the technical notes page as it describes the coding and try out the Ajax version too.
For your fixed column you could do something similar: have two tables and use the offsetTop of one to set the scrollTop of the other. See how my table sets the top line when you sort on a column with empty rows, or saves and restores the current row in the Ajax version when swapping between tabs.
Maybe this has already been answered and I am searching incorrectly, but here is my problem. I have an MVC project where the view needs to look like a table. So, I am using a div with spans inside of it. My problem is that I need the data inside to be vertically centered. When I set my display to inline-block I cannot vertically align because some of the data may wrap and become two lines. So, this throws out using line-height. Then I tried to make my span display values to be table-cell. This works and I can use vertical-align:middle, however then I am unable to set a fixed width. And, I need this to look like a table, so the fixed width is required or else it looks horrible.
Here are my attempts thus far, and I know the css needs cleaned up, but I would rather fix this first atm.
http://jsfiddle.net/Scorpionb/ukMfX/ (The scrollbars cause the entire row to misalign)
http://jsfiddle.net/Scorpionb/QzFc3/(white-space:normal; and removed overflow to get rid of the scrollbars)
http://jsfiddle.net/Scorpionb/H6ATy/ (trying to treat it as a table)
Hopefully this makes sense, but I have run around so many circles now that I am losing track of what works and what does not. So, ask if you have any questions.
Also, this is an ASP MVC project, so I am tying each row of data to a form to be submitted and bound to a model
You should really be using tables for tabular content.
You might also benefit cleaning up your CSS by using shorthand CSS. Some useful ones to get you started:

border-width
