You can append ?ts=2 or ?ts=4 to the URL to change the tab-size.

It seems that the value can be anything from 1 to 12. It does not work on Gists or raw file views though.

It actually is possible to do it, with a browser extension. Install Stylish (in Firefox or Chrome), then install this user style: “GitHub: better-sized tabs in code”.
It might not work for some languages. For example, I was viewing a JavaScript file and I did not notice any changes. So I deleted the style the author had and put the following lines into it:

No. It's only available as part of the editing feature through the Ace editor and the change is not persisted.
This blog post gives some more information about the embedded IDE.
However, provided you know the url of the blob (file) you're willing to review, you can switch to the edit mode easily by changing the blob segment with an edit segment and use the dropdown to select your prefered tab size.

If the project is yours, create a file in the project root named “.editorconfig” and give it the following contents.

This will cause GitHub to render tabs 4-wide within the project.
This is an EditorConfig file, which is formally specified, supported by many editors, and also supports more extensive editor configuration, like specifying that all .html files are UTF-8 encoded.
If the project isn’t yours, consider opening an issue requesting the author specify the indent style they intended.

If it's an option for the project you're working on, changing your editor to treat tabs as spaces will fix the problem.
So, for example, in Visual Studio Code, the config looks like this:

Until recently I insisted on non-spaced tabs. After switching, it fixed the Github rendering weirdness, and I haven't noticed any significant downsides in my workflow.
The best solution is, if possible, to convince maintainers of the source code you're looking at to replace all the tabs by the correct number of spaces.
Using tabs is problematic in code today given that you're often seeing it on the web, where the decision of "how many spaces per tab" depends on where it's being displayed.

Trying out Windows Terminal customization via settings.json. I found a profiles.json that follow the new conventions closely enough to work when pasted into settings.json, (I know it took because the theme changed). The problem is that changes to "fontFace" are not having any effect. I'm trying to use a nerd font for some powerline stuff, works in Powershell running in ConEmu but not in Windows Terminal. I get the same behavior in Windows Terminal Preview, which is supposed to be the least "bleeding edge" version.
Even trying non-nerd fonts for "fontFace" has no effect, however, "fontSize" will work.

Change the fontFace from "Iosevka Nerd Font" to just "Iosevka"; the fontFace attribute expects a font family, as far as I'm aware this isn't in the documentation and I only found it out after reading this issue on the WT github

From a comment to the Issue I opened on Windows Terminal's GitHub page, (#6606), I was directed to another fontFace problem where choosing another font would not stick if you reopened WT, (not quite the problem I was having).
Anyway, the current solution to that is to uninstall any font you want to use, then right-click and choose "Install for all users". Double-click the file to open the sample view, and use the font name found just below the the two buttons. use the spaces in the font name as is in your settings.json file.
This worked for MesloLGL NF, but not Iosevka NF.
In my experience, editing the 'settings.json' file manually creates more issues than it resolves. The easiest way to edit the default font of your terminal is as follows:
Open the settings
Select Ubuntu under the 'Profiles' header on the sidebar
Scroll down to 'Additional Settings' and select 'Appearance'
Under the text header, change the 'Font face' attribute to your preferred font
Open 'settings.json' to view changes
You should see the expected format for selecting a font - Should you wish to edit the json file manually, you should follow this format

In my case, for this problem the solution was to manually add *.html to files.associations, in user settings. Its unlogical but it seems that somehow the extension wasn't associated to the type of file. Now everything works perfectly...

So I just had this problem and I figured it out the problem was from an extension that I installed which is the pyscript extension I disabled it and everything started to work again!
Well if you have pyscript extension installed, disable it. It has conflicts with html files I guess.
Or if you don't want to disable it just ctrl+shift+p then change language mode. Select configure file association for html.

Lately I've been reading a lot of PDF books using Google Chrome. To go to a particular page, you can simply append #page=23 to the url (as in file:///C:/my_book.pdf#page=23). This is a nice and easy way to bookmark your current page number to continue reading the book later.
My question:
What's a way to find out what page you're currently in within the book?

What's a Chrome plugin that bookmarks PDF files within your file system?
I've tried a few extensions, but they don't work unless the book is in a server (as in http:// localhost/my_book.pdf), which is not desired in my case.

As of Chrome version 31+ the page number is displayed by the scroll bar if you scroll at all. I'm not sure when (what version) this feature was added.
There's a chrome extension called "PDF Bookmark" it is free and works in my case.

Is it possible to have a print option that bypasses the print dialog?
I am working on a closed system and would like to be able to pre-define the print dialog settings; and process the print as soon as I click the button.
From what I am reading, the way to do this varies for each browser. For example, IE would use ActiveX. Chrome / Firefox would require extensions. Based on this, it appears I'll have to write an application in C++ that can handle parameters passed by the browser to auto print with proper formatting (for labels). Then i'll have to rewrite it as an extension for Chrome / Firefox. End result being that users on our closed system will have to download / install these features depending on which browser they use.
I'm hoping there is another way to go about this, but this task most likely violates browser security issues.
I ended up implementing a custom application that works very similar to the Nexus Mod Manager. I wrote a C# application that registers a custom Application URI Scheme. Here's how it works:
User clicks "Print" on the website.
Website links user to "CustomURL://Print/{ID}
Application is launched by windows via the custom uri scheme.
Application communicates with the pre-configured server to confirm the print request and in my case get the actual print command.
The application then uses the C# RawPrinterHelper class to send commands directly to the printer.
This approach required an initial download from the user, and a single security prompt from windows when launching the application the first time. I also implemented some Javascript magic to make it detect whether the print job was handled or not. If it wasn't it asks them to download the application.
I know this is a late reply, but here's a solution I'm using. I have only used this with IE, and have not tested it with any other browser.
This Sub Print blow effectively replaces the default print function.

I am writing this answer for firefox browser.
Open File > Page Setup
Make all the headers and footers blank
Set the margins to 0 (zero)
In the address bar of Firefox, type about:config
Search for print.always_print_silent and double click it
Change it from false to true
This lets you skip the Print pop up box that comes up, as well as skipping the step where you have to click OK, automatically printing the right sized slip.
If print.always_print_silent does not come up
Right click on a blank area of the preference window
Select new > Boolean
Enter "print.always_print_silent" as the name (without quotes)
Click OK
Select true for the value
You may also want to check what is listed for print.print_printer
You may have to choose Generic/Text Only (or whatever your receipt printer might be named)

If you where allowed to do such a thing anyway, it would be a security issue since a malware script could silently sent printing jobs to visitor's printer.

Does anyone know of an extension for Firefox, or a script or some other mechanism, that can monitor one or more local files. Firefox would auto-refresh or otherwise update its canvas when it detected a change (of timestamp) in the files(s).
For editing CSS, it would be ideal if just the CSS could be reloaded, rather than a full HTML re-render.
Effectively it would enable similar behaviour to Firebug with its dynamic HTML/CSS editing, only through external files.

Firefox has an extension called mozRepl.
Emacs can plug into this, with moz-reload-on-save-mode.
when it's set up, saving the file forces a refresh of the browser window.
There are some IDE's that contain this ability (They'll have a pane within them or some other means to auto-refresh a page on save).
If you want to do this yourself a quick hack is to set the meta refresh on the page to a low value - one or two seconds.

This is certainly hacky, but if you want to work locally without making any external request (to live.js, for example), or run any local server, I think this might be useful. This is not specific to web development, you can adopt similar strategy to any other workflow.
You will need two tiny tools (which are present in almost all distribution repos): inotify-tools and xdotool.
First get the ID of your Firefox and your editor window using xdotool.

Depending on the number of processes running, you will get one or more window ID. Use xdotool windowactivate <ID> to know which one you want (the focus changes to the respective window).
Use inotifywait -e close_write to monitor changes to your local file and when you save the file using your editor, change focus to your browser, reload xdotool key CTRL+R and focus back to your editor. This is so instantaneous you will not notice nothing.
Also, inotifywait exits on change, so you might have to do it in a loop. Here is a minimum working example (in Bash in your working directory).

With this tampermonkey script, the live.js script will be automatically inserted to pages whose address matches http://127.0.0.1:8000/*. You can change the port according to your need.
I think that you can solve it by using some ajax requests after a determinate interval. You can do a request to CSS files and then if you don't get the "not modified" header you delete your css and load it again. For dynamic files you do a request and store the response and then every time you make a request to that file you compare the response to the latest.
