Magazine-like horizontal scrolling in HTML5 & CSS3 - html

I'd like to use HTML5 and CSS3 to make a magazine like asidemag.com but how can I enable the horizontal scrolling like that?

You may want to begin considering how people define the sideways swiping, an important first step in how these things get put together. Horizontal scrolling is not really something that is 'enabled', but an integral part of the magazine that is 'built'. You can contact them to find out how they did it, should you like.
Your steps are to read the touch events of the user, understand how they are working (direction) and then how the visible items on the web page are handled to integrate the swiping behaviour. This will depend on your proficiency with javascript, css and html5, and willingness to build the system itself.
I have been working on an engine for this, but the asidemag.com concept handles the data differently from mine. They use ajax to load each page as needed, which allows for a larger magazine, and mine just loaded an entire web page and 'built' it to read like a magazine. Theirs only works on the iPad, and mine works on most devices, including ie7.
How much effort do you want to invest in building a magazine? You can contact asidemag to find out how to do it on their system if you want it easier, or you can poke around on the net to find out how to do it yourself if you have more time to devote to it.

Searching for local responsive sites

When designing responsive sites for customers, it would be nice to see what others have done, what works and what is ill-advised. I'd love to be able to search for similar sites that are responsive, but can find very few, usually none. The only option I know of is to google and then visit every site, checking to see if they're responsive.
I read not too long ago that Google was going to start putting a tag next to mobile-friendly sites in their listings. Did that ever happen? I'm not seeing it. That would be VERY handy.
If I search for something like "responsive websites", I'll get compiled lists of the best responsive websites out there. These are either incredibly artistic, or technological marvels, neither of which I'm looking for. I'm interested in sites that are more run-of-the-mill. Completely functional and responsive, but not awe-inspiring.

Yes, the Mobile-friendly tag is implemented but you can only see it on mobile devices.
Alternatively you can open the dev tools in Chrome and simulate a mobile device, which will also make Google show the tag.

HTML5 mobile development using HTML5BoilerPlate

I'm starting a HTML5 mobile application with HTML5BoilerPlate as a template and I cannot find a lot of resources regarding the best practises for HTML5 mobile development. I am looking for stuff such as:
- navigation using tab bar controller
- navigation between view
- how to best handle content ? (is it better to use several divs within the content div and only show one div at a time ?)
In fact, I'd like to understand some of the things done in Google Latitude.
Is there any good beginners guide for those items ?
You have to implement a lot more of the logic around these 'controller' components. Some of the classes that might be present in iOS development are not in HTML5. You either need to roll your own or use an existing framework.
Navigation between views is handled programmatically. You would need to do it yourself, by implementing components that can animate to/from the screen, or use one of the readily available frameworks like Sencha Touch or jQuery Mobile.
It depends on how you want the visual flow to work. I know that Sencha Touch adds in the divs lazily so not to take up as much memory. I guess the trick here is to experiment to find the best implementation that suits your needs (and then write a blog article).
SixRevisions has a pretty good article on getting started in general HTML5 programming. Some other articles, here, some good tips here, and Apple's docs.
The best beginner guide that I found for Sencha Touch was their examples included with the source code. They have an example for just about every UI control they ship and multiple applications that will gently introduce you to the framework. Other resources include their Vimeo Channel, their forum, and their docs.
Also, you can probably pull up a mobile site and take a look at how they are implementing their code using Chrome/Safari's developer toolbar. You may have to emulate a user agent string of a mobile browser though.
We have released a Mobile Boilerplate and the documents in the associated wiki are definitely something you should look into for info about this.
While not guides, I would HIGHLY recomend looking into either the Sencha Touch or JQuery Mobile HTML5 Mobile Frameworks. They, combined with HTML5 Boilerplate, will do more to bootstrap your project then just HTML5 Boilerplate alone.

Choosing a technology... why not Flash?

I want to make a site from scratch, and Im considering to use Flex to make a R.I.A instead of the standard approach (xhtml + css + some ajax).
The kind of site I want to make is something like e-bay, but less complicated.
But.. I know that 95%+ of the sites like that are built in the previous mentioned techs... so, what are the cons and pros if I want to make a pure Flex site?

If you write an entire website in Flash, the entire website lives at one URL. (Short of mucking around with whatever Flash provides to let you offer deeper links.)
Whereas a website written in HTML, unless you go mad with your AJAX, lets people link to the stuff they’re actually interested in, like unicorns:

Flash for business web applications - why not?
HTML also has a pretty standard and understood user interface: links, and form controls. (Mainly links.)
Flash doesn't work on iPhone/iPad. End of story.
Other reasons: not a web standard, often quite slow, not good for SEO, etc.
It requires users to have a proprietary plugin which some users don't want and other users can't have (since isn't available for all platforms (iOS being a key example)).
It also has performance and stability issues on some platforms (OS X and Linux being prime candidates).
While some search engines have started to index Flash content (so long as it exposes the information), the results aren't as good as for content rich HTML sites.
You can do that simply using traditional xhtml + css + jQuery (or any JS framework if you want to increase UX). Flex won't do much in your scenario.
In my experience, performance is not a real issue unless you play video - one can write bad programs in JavaScript, too...
Your pros are mostly on the development side: You can have a great looking site quickly, and you can almost completely forget about browser incompatibilites.
You rely on the customers having the plugin installed, though, and you rely on Adobe's technology for development and playing of the content.
If this is not important to you, and you can afford to do without all iPhone and iPad users, accessibility and standards compliance... go for it!
Flex is good if you want to install as an application using Air. ebay actually has a RIA version, or at least they did for a while.
There are several concerns with a Flash site, some of which Adobe has addressed in the last couple of years.
One is accessibility. It is more difficult to make a Flash site accessible to the visually impaired, who use screenreaders.
Related, people like to be able to copy and paste content, as well as print. With standard web pages, the developer need do nothing to support this, it just works from the browser. With Flash, you'll have to take care to make your text content selectable, and I'm not sure a user could ever select a section of text + images. I've never done it, but I can only imagine that implementing printing ability in your Flash site would be nightmarish, at best.
Another is linking and addressability. For most sites, you can copy or at least get a link that you can share or save to get back to where you want to be. With Flash, you usually go to a single address and then the rest of of your experience happens inside the Flash "window" and the browser isn't actually navigating any pages. It is far more difficult to implement this ability in a Flash site.
A Flash site is usually very slow to load, especially the first time, and page load times are immeasurably important to a site's success.
Finally, you've perhaps heard the furor over the last couple of years about different vendors supporting or not supporting Flash in their products/devices. An all-flash site would be completely inaccessible on any iPhone or iPad, for example, which do not support Flash at all. Furthermore, some employers do not allow plugins like Flash to be installed on work machines, so you'd eliminate that portion of possible traffic, as well.
Nobody has yet mentioned Silverlight.?
I mostly agree with Jay's answer concerning accessibility, but as a further note would like to add that development in Flex/Flash vs HTML/CSS/JS could be more costly not only in terms of money but also for maintenance. Many Flex/Flash devs typically charge a higher price and their dev tools, which are necessary for compilation, usually aren't free, compared to HTML/CSS/JS devs, who often use freely available text editors.

Are tabbed interfaces confusing?

We are designing a web site and have run into some UI challenges that would be neatly solved with a tabbed interface. Users will interact with different elements of the site (there are some basic view/edit/copy/paste functions available) and having only one object in one tab visible at a time simplifies things quite a bit.
We are, of course, completely comfortable with tabbed interfaces but what about novice users? I've searched the web for guidance and I haven't found anything definitive. Do you have experience presenting a tabbed interface to novice users and did they have trouble with it? Or, have we reached the point where everyone is comfortable with tabs and we can use them without reservation?
Usability is important-- more so for this project than most. If naive users are confused by a tabbed interface it just won't work and we'll have to find another way.
In his excellent book "Don't Make Me Think" (Sensible.com), Steve Krug discusses the benefits of using a tabbed interface:
They're self evident
They're hard to miss
They're slick
They suggest a physical space
He goes on to describe the keys to successful tabs as demonstrated by Amazon.com:
They were drawn correctly
They were color coded
There was a tab selected when you enter the site.
Obviously, he provides details to each of these bullet items in the book (I won't plagerize him here). The book is definitely worth a look if you want guidelines for creating web sites for novices and experts alike.
Tabs are becoming common place enough that I wouldn't worry about using them, as long as you implement them correctly. Make sure that you make the active tab visually distinct from the other tabs.
Also, try to create the tabs using progressive enhancement so that the content is still there with JavaScript disabled. There are two main ways of doing this:
Load every tab but the first using
AJAX. The tabs themselves should be
links to the content that the AJAX
fetches.
Keep all of your information on the
page, but hide it using JavaScript.
When you cycle through the tabs,
they are populated from the hidden
parts of the page.
A design resource you might find helpful is the YUI Design Pattern Library and their section on tabs.
I think as long as the tabs are visible as such it's understandable by the user. I have seen websites where they present a vertical bar with links that act like tabs but it's not immediately visible to the user and found that very confusing.
I would have to disagree with those are in favor of tabs. In a design test we did for a fairly high-traffic website (over 1mil uniques at the time), we found that tabs have not been used. Tabs were clearly marked, located to the right of the main content area. Based on that experience I would suggest either finding an alternative or, as staticscan suggested run usability tests to figure out which ones work.

Google usability testing and start learning. It's not hard.
I tend to agree with lothar and ricebowl - people seem pretty familiar with it these days. The most important thing with any GUI element is clarity - the user must innately know what will happen when they press something (they know that clicking an inactive tab will make it active); and in navigation - it must be very clear exactly which tab they are currently on. As lothar said, if it's not immediately visible to the user, it's very confusing. If you address those issues, then it should be fine.

I think people are used to the metaphor (from binders, or card-indexes and so forth) of tabs. Especially those that use the web for any length of time. I think that, if IE's adopted a metaphor, it implies a common familiarity with that metaphor.
So, no, I'd suggest that they're not confusing and suggest that you go for it. Just, maybe, post a welcome/first-time introduction (or a prominent 'help' link to such an intro) to the use of the tabs.
I've been a developer for an intranet app that used a tabbed interface, generated with HTML and controlled by JavaScript. This was way before IE7 and Firefox. In fact, it was a bit of a novelty on websites in general, too.
Fortunately, a previous developer had discovered that if you made it look like a dialog box - even down to using a grey background, then people usually understood the metaphor. We also loaded all the content for all the tabs in the initial page-load, and had the Save/Cancel buttons outside the tabbed structure. Because of this, most people immediately understood that they could move between tabs (we used JavaScript to hide and show the DIVs) and a Save would save changes to all of them.
If you want to deviate from such an obvious metaphor, then you need to do some usability studies.
A well implemented Tab interface should not confuse users.
In line with what others have said one of the most ipmortant things to consider with Tabs, or any other navigation interface is for it to be obvious where they currently are in the navigation scheme.
Another important point is not to break the browser! Many AJAX or javascript implemtations break the back button. This is a minor annoyance to some and a major inconvieniece to others. Make sure to consider your target audience here.
Personaly I prefer the oldschool method of not preloading all of the tabs but having each tab as its own page and using a templating methodology to manage the navigation interface, be it tabbled or otherwise. This maintains the browser history and works fine with or without javascipt.
Tabs, etc are just tools. How we decide to lay them out and use them is what determines their effectiveness.
What I try to keep in mind is:
1) Keep it close. The things we use the most should be on the front or up close to the top as much as possible and bury the rest based on how often they are used/adjusted.
2) Easy enough for Mom to use. All interfaces are confusing if they are not laid out in a clear and logical manner.
3) Organize how it's used, not how you think it makes sense.* I often use tabs to break up steps in a process, or to break up areas such as basic / advanced options. I group them based on similarity or usage depending on what works better
4) Keep them few Either way I try to stay below the 7-10 range tops as the human brain has a hard time jumping beyond 7-10 digits, so I assume the same for pieces of information. Vertical Accordians might be something you want to look into as well.
I have also embedded tabs within tabs before. Works well but only one layer deep most of the time.

Print designers moving to web ... what do they need to know?

I'm trying to compile a guide for students used to publishing in print who are learning web design.
Some obvious things which web developers know but they don't:
You can't rotate graphics in HTML
All objects have to be rectangular, you can't have a circular DIV
Many typographical effects in their repertoire can't be achieved
Some things which are tricky are:
Can they have variable opacity? Well, yes and no.
Can they have rounded corners? Maybe.
Some things which aren't technical difficulties, but which are problems:
Image file sizes: I have a student who wants to have a different large graphic header on every page of their site; that's not technically a problem, but it will mean a visitor has to wait for a new graphic to load every time they navigate
Accessibility: "why not just make everything a graphic, to overcome the limitations of HTML?"
Please help me fill out my list and add any hints or tips for people making this transition.
web is not print
Layouts can be fluid.
elements don't have to be absolutely positioned
web pages need to be checked in several browsers for compatibility
avoid divitis; from experience people coming from print into this field do everything by brute force instead of trying to think of elegant solutions for optimization and semantics purposes
print is consumed visually - the web is consumed by people with visual impairments as well. Don't forget lynx users no matter how small the market share is :)
semantics is important, learn about them

Coming from someone who has done both print design and web design (and done a decent job at both, I think), it seems like you're off to a good start. Other thoughts:
Darko Z mentioned this but I think it's worth stressing that browser incompatbilities must be recognized and dealt with. In the print industry there are standard formats like PDF which guarantee that things will come out in print the way they look in design; besides, many publishers will directly accept the native file formats of the most popular design programs, like Adobe InDesign, Quark XPress, even MS Word (for the cheapskates ;-P). The point being that print designers are used to a "set it and forget it" approach where they assume that once they design something a certain way, it will stay designed. The fact that there are different web browsers which render the same web pages slightly differently is likely going to be a major pain in the butt for people used to the print world.
Addendum to the above: fonts. You can't use (or at least can't rely on) uncommon fonts in web design, for obvious reasons.
Screen real estate has to be used effectively because there's a limited amount of it. And I mean really limited - no matter how hard you try, you can't write HTML that will make someone's monitor expand 5 inches or put another screen on the back ;-) It's not like in print where people can peek back and forth between different pages of a book. Reading web pages is kind of like looking at parchment through binoculars; you have to design the pages with that limited field of view in mind.
Web page designs are dynamic and transient; they stay up for a while, they get boring, they get recycled/replaced with new designs. So you're not stuck with mistakes. But it also means you need to design with future changes in mind, e.g. by using CSS so you can change the look of whole classes of elements easily. There is some use of styles in print design but nowhere near as much as online.
Fonts and Text

The web is interactive. This
drastically affects how you consume
and display information. You can hide and subsequently display information using tabs, accordion, and similar methods.
Think in terms of primary and
secondary calls of action. What do
you want the user to do? Where do you
want them to go next?
Some broad points:
1. Print is static, the web is interactive.
The essence of a print project is a fixed point in time, an idea captured on paper or some other substrate. Web projects are moving, changing experiences that represent both the ideas of their creators and their users.
2. Everything is uncertain.
You mention typography in your answer, it's probably worth broadening that to cover all aspects of appearance. The variety of operating systems and hardware available mean that its hard to determine how all your audience will experience your final design. Whilst some things must be compatible across all browsers, sometimes it is not worth the time and effort needed to make something pixel perfect in all systems.
3. Learn about programming.
Unless you've an aptitude for it, you don't need to learn how to program for the web. But it would still be a big help to gain some familiarity with web programming, as if you can't code, you'll need to work closely with someone who can and you need to be able to communicate effectively with them.
4. Create working prototypes
When something is static, it can be designed using a static format. To design something interactive like a website, you should be making use of moving prototypes that represent the kind of behaviour the final design will have. You can use paper to do this, or more sophisticated mockups using xhtml, css and javascript, or a dedicated prototyping program.
The user controls how they want to see content on the web, not you. Your design will not look the same to all people because some people may make it different on purpose.
Screens can be arbitrarily large or small
The web is interactive: usability trumps pretty-lookingness
Your page will be read by machines: make sure the data is easy to get at by scripts that can't read images / large blobs of text (aka "be semantic")
Remember to save your jpg files in RGB format not CMYK format. I regularly get sent jpgs that won't display on a web-site and every time it's because it's been saved in the wrong format from Photoshop.
This will become less of a problem as browsers support more image formats, but considering that 20%+ of users are still on IE6 for the sites we develop this will take a while to go away.
A lot of these are good rules of thumb for print designers who want to learn how to actually markup HTML and write CSS. But as a Web developer in the past, I'd frequently just take a designer's template and write the HTML and CSS for them. Whether or not that task was simple or difficult depended on the designer's awareness of the capabilities of CSS.
There was one pain point in particular that kept coming up. So for print designers moving to the web, the absolute number one rule to remember is:
Don't design any element to have an explicit, pixel-perfect height. You can restrict the width all you want, but changing fonts, preferred font sizes, and different text strings being pulled from the database on different pages means that text needs to be able to flow vertically without generating hideous, hard-to-use overflow scrollbars.
Designers who remember this can usually conjure up designs that are easy to cut up and integrate in a mostly semantic manner. Designers who forget this sometimes end up creating designs that have to be shoehorned into a 3 inch by 3 inch box, and that's when I reach for the vodka.
A given color or font will render differently in different browsers.
Especially when one browser is on Windows and the other is on Mac or Linux, etc.

Jeffery Zeldman's book Taking Your Talent to the Web is specifically targeted to the question you have asked. It's been out for a few years...not sure if there's a 2nd or 3rd edition. Check it out.
My main advise is that you need to recognize that while you have dot precision in print applications, most of the time in web design your focus is to design and code a site that will accomplish your content and layout goals for any number of platforms, resolutions and color depths. Color depth has become less important than it was in the past.
