Reporting Services displays #Error if no rows to display. - reporting-services

I'm creating a rather simple report with Reporting Services and noticed that if my data source (which is XML / Web Service) returns no rows, I get #Error text in the text cells that contain some formatting or aggregation logic. It displays one row + the totals row with all datasource cells empty except for the aforementioned calculated ones.
Any idea how I can get rid of these messages?

One thing you can do is set conditional visibility on the details row accessing the "Hidden" property.
=IIF(CountRows("DataSetName") = 0,true,false)
Another thing you can do is check the fields "IsMissing" property before setting it.
=IIF(Fields!Item.IsMissing,"",Fields!Item.Value)

You need to do data validation within each of those cells to make sure something is not blank. It is erroring because it is trying to do a calculation on a blank value. Try:
=IIF(IsNothing(Fields!Item.Value),"",Do Calculations)

Microsoft Report Builder: How to display selected chosen values from a multi-value parameter in a table?

I'm using MS Report Builder v3.0 to create a report. As part of this report, I have a multi-valued parameter (named #Diagnoses). The labels and some of the values (truncated by the size of the display boxes) of this parameter are shown below:
What I would like to be able to do is display the labels / values the user chooses in a 2-column tablix (I've tried using separate textboxes for the labels / values but the results are mis-aligned).
However, this does not appear to be straightforward. The closest method I've found is this one, which stores the user's choices in an internal parameter in xml format, then queries this parameter to produce a dataset from the xml.
So, I created the xml-producing internal parameter like this:
...and I've created a dataset based on this data, with the following query:
But now when I put these values into a tablix, the labels and values are now on separate rows, like this:
Does anyone have a straightforward way of sorting this out?

OK - I've solved it (it's not pretty, but it works!)
Basically, the problem comes from having to use the join statement when creating the xml - you can't really put both the label information and the value information on the same row in the xml.
To get round this, you have to use two internal parameters to create two datasets - one for the labels column, one for the values column. The method for creating these is essentially the same as that shown above, except for the values parameter, the expression for the default value is:
...and for the labels parameter, it's this:
(by the way, make sure you set the available values to "None" for internal / hidden parameters - the expressions here are for the default values)
Then, when you create the values dataset, you use the following syntax in its query:
...and similarly for the labels dataset.
Finally, in the report, you create one matrix from each of the two datasets, then put them next to each other, using fixed row heights and setting "can shrink" / "can grow" to false so that they look like they're in the same table:
I hope this helps somebody!

Show a message to the user instead of blank report [duplicate]

I am building an SSRS 2005 report using BIDS. My report filters on date. When the selected date returns no data rows the report is blank, just the title is displayed, no table or column heading.
How can I change this to display a message like No data available. or Report is empty.?
You could set the property NoRowsMessage available on the report's table control like this:
Select the Tablix control and press F4 to view the Properties pane.
Find the NoRowsMessage property and set the value to whatever message you'd like.
You can also to format the message using the Font and TextAlign properties.
Here are some examples of what the report will look like under various settings:
Further Reading: Here is a Technet article on how to Set a No Data Message for a Data Region
Avoid NoRowsMessage and build your own conditional empty row
One problem (or feature if that's what you want) with NoRowsMessage is that it'll literally replace the entire table with just a plain old message string.
Which provides a relatively counter-intuitive end user experience in my opinion. Normally when no data is found by a system, we'd like to know something about what data was being looked for and what it would have looked like.
Instead, based off how to keep the structure of the Tablix when there is no data to show, you can do the following:
Insert New Header Row, outside the group and above the details record.
Right click on the side of the new row and Set Row Visibility
Set Visibility to the following expression which will count the rows inside the current Tablix and only set Visibility to True if there is no data.
=CountRows() > 0
Optionally, merge the cells and add your own message or just display an empty row
Here's a comparison of how the various options will render: (pick whichever look you think best fits your data and use case)
Right-click on whatever databound element(s) you are using in the report and there should be a property NoDataMessage There are a host of options there but the Caption is the first element I would look at.

Need help on SQL Server report

I have a question on SQL Server Reporting Services. In fact, I want to know about how to make a particular logic work.
I have a main report which has one sub-report inside it. The report takes an input parameter test_id and accordingly displays the data in tabular form.
When the test_id has a valid value that's matching, it displays the data.
But, when test_id doesn't have a valid value and hence it doesn't match, I get the empty table as below.
TESTNAME TESTDETAIL
Sub-report
TESTPARENTID PARENT DETAILS
I want to know how to display a message "No details found for the test_id" INSTEAD of displaying any empty tables. Only title and subtitle should display.
Objects like Tablix in SSRS have a property NoRowsMessage.
You can set this to display a message if there are zero rows.
Another option is to go into the tablix properties. Under Visibility, select Show or hide based on an expression. You can write an expression here to hide the entire tablix. Just change the name of the field to match yours:
=iif(Count(Field1)=0,True,False)

SUM() on a form footer resulting in #Error

I'm trying to display the sum of a field in a text box in the form footer. The field is not calculated in any way.
Here are a couple of the things I've tried:
=Sum([txtWeldInches])
=Sum([WeldInches])
=Sum(CDbl([txtWeldInches]))
=Sum(CDbl([WeldInches]))
...well you get the idea. Each iteration I've used results in the Text Box displaying #Error Without exception.
I've used similar constructs in different forms in the same project, so I'm not sure what the problem might be.
Has anyone run into this before?
EDIT:
I ended up writing a VBA routine to update the boxes when it was likely that they would be changed rather than trying to get a bound sum() function to work.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/199355
All of the domain functions are based on the same query (over the underlying recordset). If one of the bound functions on the form has a binding error, all of the functions on the form will return an error.
In other words, make sure all your footer controls are resolving properly and not hitting any nulls.
If you use a SUM or AVG then make sure you are also using the Nz function:
ControlSource = =SUM(NZ([FIELD],0))
Is the field "WeldInches" existing in the data source for this form?
What datatype the field "WeldInches" is?
EDIT: I have looked at all your comments. If it doesn't work by databinding, try and use the unbounded way. At runtime, get the value of WeldInches using DSUM and set the footer textbox's value when the form loads.
Also, remember to update it at places where you think the SUM could change.
I had the same problem as Rister.
The source of the form was an underlying query.
I had a bound text box named txtQty on this form. Its control source was Qty (based on the underlying query of the form).
I created an unbound text box and entered =SUM([txtQty]) and received an error.
I tried various ways to find a solution and was very desperate.
Then I deleted the underlying query and created a new one using the same name and fields as before.
Then I entered =SUM([Qty]) into the unbound text box on the form and voila, it worked. Note that I didn't enter the name of the bound text box (txtQty) into the expression, but its control source (Qty). I don't know why, but it worked for me.
I know you said "Form" but for those who have issues with the Sum formula in an Access "Report" the formula has to be in the Report Footer NOT the Page footer. Took me a while to figure it out as Access defaults to only showing the page footer.
You want to sum by the name of the column in the record source: SUM([WeldInches])
Make sure there are no other textboxes with the name WeldInches.
