Html5 Canvas animations - html

I am looking to get into learning how to use the html5 canvas to do animations as well as other things. I have an excellent knowledge of javascript and programming in general (mostly php but can adapt to anything). However, I have not had the opportunity to do much with graphics in the past. I have created nice smooth animations using javascript/jquery but the canvas object seems to be alot more than just that. The hardest part I am finding as I have been playing with it is that you have no reference to an object on the stage unless you store the reference. For example if I create a div on the page I have that reference to the object. However, with the canvas object if you create something within it, it draws that element on the stage giving you no reference to it. So you have to manually store the details of that object as I understand it and I could be wrong (if I am please correct me).
Anyways the whole point of this post is to see if anyone can point me to some really good articles/help about working with the canvas object. Not just drawing graphics to it cause I have been able to accomplish that very easily. But I would like to articles/help on managing the objects on the canvas. I want to make sure that I am doing this correctly/efficiently for the future of the technology. Also I am willing to purchase a book on working with html5 canvas/graphics/animations but most of them that I have seen go over the whole scope of html5 and leave out alot of the details of actually working with the canvas. So if you know any good books with my requirements please recommend them here.

There are nice libraries to do very basic to complex graphics using HTML5/WebGL

Hello guys I am new in html5 canvas development and I am lost in choosing canvas frameworks. There are so many of them that I can't find out what to use. So here I am! I want your help to choose which one is better for my needs. There are my needs
1) I want the framework used Vector graphics, I know canvas is not DOM, I realy don't care about it but what I mean is I want to manipulate with objects after its creation, PaperJS has this feature I don't know about others. If advanced mouse events will be available it would be better.
2) I want to use the framework for images, I will load image and animate them with canvas, move, animate some colors...
3) I want the framework to be fast because of my needs (image animation should be smooth)
4) I want the framework to have good community because I know I will need some help.
So what do you think which one is better for me? and please if you can write down from my list which are the strength and weakness for each framework?
HTML5 canvas is still very fresh environment. You can get impression there is a lot of tools already available, they are often quite immature though.
My answer will cover only part of your question because I used only KineticJS and EaselJS.
You can start from reading opinions at this page (mine is the last one at the bottom).
Speaking shortly KineticJS has lower entry barrier. It's simple drawing library and has some support for mouse events too. At the time I was trying to use it it was barely extendable. I found it really hard to customize for my needs.
EaselJS is a bit harder to start with, but it's more advanced too. Now it's part of other libs set known all together as CreateJS. It seems that lot of development going around there.
Both Kinetic and Easel supports mouse event. I don't remember
well the Kinetic, sensing 'onMouseOver' is costy with Easel though.
Also both mentioned libs allows objects manipulation. You can find
here TweenJS also useful as addition.
Again both Kinetic and Easel allows this. Easel also has support for
sprites - 'animated images' well known for web game developers.
I'm not sure about Kinetic as I haven't reached animation part of my
project before I dropped it (the lib, not the project). With Easel
speed is tricky. It has some optimization methods implemented like
for example objects cache or snapToPixel flag. Examples seems to run
really well. However for my project using Easel smoothness still is
an issue despite quite a lot of effort put in optimization. Maybe I
misused the API or there is still place for more optimalization I
haven't noticed.
Both libs are quite young but seems to be actively developed.
Authors are rather responsive. Community still isn't big, but I
guess CreateJS as more complete set of tools for creating games will
grow faster.
If you want to check here is the project I mentioned. It's a web page made with usage of EaselJS + TweenJS. Still needs some minor tweaking though.

Emulating Photoshop color levels in AS3

I'm making an app in which I need to make some photo effects similar to Instagram's effects. I was wondering if it's possible to somehow emulate the work of Photoshop's color levels in AS3.
I've tried using AdjustColor, ColorMatrixFilter and ColorTransform classes but desired image is very hard to achieve using those.
So does anyone have a solution easier than that? or maybe someone knows a library that I couldn't find on Google?
You should have a look at Joa's image processing library.

This is actually implemented in Javascript, but it's based on the Flash API. All You need is there. Or i can recommend Foundation ActionScript 3.0 Image Effects by Todd Yard.
Flash API reference is another good resource for inspiration.
There is another good resource for pixel manipulation found here: http://evanw.github.com/webgl-filter/. This is done in WebGL but if your target API is still Flash, then you can easily transposed the GLSL language into Pixelbender and inject the shader
into the Flash by making reference to the pbj file.
Check Grant Skinner's TweenMax plugins, especially ColorMatrixFilter.

Add existing SVG or HTML5 Elements to a Box2D World

I have an SVG logo made up predominatly of elements. I want to animate this, or more specifically drop it into a "gravity world". I was hoping to use Box2D (web port).
I'm a noob to Box2D and Canvas really, but I've got as far as converting my SVG into HTML5 canvas using canvg and I'm now reading through the getting started tutorials for Box2dWeb and I can see how to create a world with gravity, but I can't find any examples of walking an existing SVG or Canvas and simply adding the shapes to that world.
It looks like you need to use the Box2D drawing methods. Can anyone point me at a simple example that takes an existing set of shapes (SVG or on Canvas) and simply drops them onto a Box2DWeb gravity world so they simply collapse to the bottom, much like nearly all the existing Box2D demos and tutorials?
Note that with CanVG I'm not adding the shapes to Canvas myself, it is creating the Canvas for me from the SVG.
You can add whatever you want on top of box2d. If you wanted to draw dancing elephants instead of a box shape, that's up to you. Otherwise games would look pretty boring.
Nothing prevents you from using either SVG, canvas, WebGL or even HTML with box2d, you don't need to use the box2d drawing methods if you don't want to.
See this blogpost (and code) for using box2d together with raphaël (SVG). Dmitry Baranovskiy (the author of Raphaël) has also shown some demos of a custom box2d port/wrapper called newton.js. It's not yet released AFAIK, but it promises a simpler and more javascript-like API.

Regarding the html elements to apply box2d effects i also can't find any other links expect the one you mentioned in your answer.
I had been hoping that with a bounty somebody would be able to illustrate for me the "hello world" of 'gravity demos' that could animate some arbitrary shapes. Articles and links I've been shown (and found) so far are much more complicated than I'm looking for.
Whilst I hate to answer my own question, I'd just like to set the bar. This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for;

This script for this code is licensed under GPL3 I understand and I've tried it out successfully on my site. In fact, it just causes all the DIVs on my page to drop, so it's just the ticket, and I could use it.
It's not however, a simple script. I'd have preferred a simple stand-alone sample if it were possible. Failing that, hopefully this answer will help anyone else looking for something similar.

I don't really know 'Box2d', and I'm not sure if this is what you mean but just to clarify if it comes to where you need it, in HTML5, it works like having the background or style to a <table>, Which if you don't know is just about the same thing as a table in MS Word.

Well, Dmitry's newton.js is not yet public. But like #cirrus, I needed something similar. So I've gone ahead and created my own newton.js. It is not well tested, but has API similar to what I can see in Dmitry's video + my own requirement (I wanted to create a game engine on top of Raphael as a renderer)

Mixing canvas and CSS3 elements

I'm implementing a HTML5 game using canvas. Now I'm thinking about making all text overlays like tooltips, speechbubbles, infowindows and so on using HTML elements with position absolute over the canvas. So I can use many effects and transitions CSS3 offers.
But I'm not sure about performance. These overlays have to be added and removed frecuently (is something MMORPG like, so there will be a lot of speechbubbles and so on).
There are probably 2 questions regarding performance:
DOM traversal to add/remove. Maybe a cache can help?
HTML and CSS3 itself.
The other option is to manage these elements in the canvas itself, drawing them each frame. But maybe I have then again a performance penalty, because of the extra code, timeouts and stuff I would have to add, to achieve similar effects like in CSS3. And traversal of some data structure would be needed anyways.
Any advices, opinions, experiences?

Consider using only one of the mentioned two technology. May be you can release that application in mobile or tablet. I think on these devices would be issues with handling both the same time. And another thing: if you stay in canvas there would be no worries about compatibility. Its not a techy but a thought-provoking answer.
The single best reason for using the DOM for UI elements in HTML5 games is event handling.
If you draw everything on canvas you will need to write your own logic to handle clicks and decide what has been clicked on, which can soon become very complex, expecialy if you have multiple layers of interface.
With DOM elements (especially when using a library like jQuery) this is trivial, and you can create a rich and interactive UI with minimal effort.
The only downside I can think of is that you may encounter browser inconsistencies, especially if using CSS3, but again jQuery will help with this.
I suppose another downside is that once you go down the DOM route, your game is always going to be a browser game, whereas if it was 100% canvas, there would always be the possibility of porting the code to another language and making it native, but I guess that would only be a downside for some people.
One way to approach this is to use a "dynamic" image map behind your canvas object. Then you can use the dom as required. Note you will need to pass the clicks on the canvas through to the image map.

html5 canvas paint application

I'm working on a paint application with canvas, and trying to make some better tools.
now i have one tool that only connects lines while following the mouse movement.
can you think of a good tutorial or a good idea for other tools like spary, or brush?

I don't have a tutorial, but I think you should simply use thicker lines to create a brush tool.
A spray tool could draw random points in a circle with random alpha(that's quite easy to implement), but that might be extremely slow on some browsers. Drawing using pre-generated images would be much better but harder to implement.
