I'm simply trying to keep the body color from spilling inside the middle of my page (between the 2 sidebars), which I want to keep white.
I'm kind of building this template from scratch and really want to do it the right way so that I can use it for other html projects as well. Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong and what I could do better to make the css work?
Thanks!

put this style for your container:
#container {
margin:0 auto;
width:900px;
background:white
}
This is because by default background value for HTML element is transparent, so everything is see-through unless you specify otherwise

I'm trying to make a flat black background below the navbar but that seems to be an issue. This is particular concern because I wanted to add some JQuery functionality to the buttons on the right to cause the background color to change when they're pressed. But if something as simple as this, though fundamental, doesn't work...
Currently another issue is this thick, white strip. I honestly don't know what's causing it. I assumed that just having a white AlarmTime would mean floating white text on the page surrounded by a black background, but that's clearly not the case. It's left as the default black now simply because it's effectively invisible otherwise. For the record, it's not the flexbox nor the div causing the border because it still shows up with both of them deleted.
https://jsfiddle.net/xjrqm1k3/
body
{
background-color:black;
}
What did I do wrong?
Edit: I thought you had to have a period before the name of the selected item to select a class. I guess I might've been missing something in my code? The fiddle I posted doesn't seem to have a period Fiddle, and it's what I Copy-Pasted from my work. Do indents cause Visual Studio to count the item as a class?
Edit: Regardless, thanks for the help and information; it works.
You were doing
.body
meaning class with name body
change to body
Also you have to add !important since you're loading bootstrap after this CSS file.
See fiddle
It's probably being overriden by something else. Try this:
body
{
background-color: black!important;
}
I have the following Squarespace website. You can login to the site by clicking visitor access and typing in the code.
I'd like to change the background of the website by using the followng background image:
https://hethuisvandelingerie.squarespace.com/assets/bgs/bg8.png
I tried to do this with a CSS code to add a background image to the div with ID "canvas". This is the code I used:
#canvas{background-image: url('assets/bgs/bg8.png');}
However, this code does not seem to add the background image?
Any of you have an idea on how to solve this issue?
Take a look on your main wrapped on your #canvas div. Try to use the same CSS code. Hope it helps!
main {
background: url(https://static1.squarespace.com/static/ta/58639728d2b857b308f66598/404/assets/bgs/bg8.png)
}
In site.css, look for this entry and remove the background line from #main. You've applied the background image to #canvas but #main is displaying over #canvas and #main's background is covering the background image applied to #canvas
#main {
background: #fcfcfc;
...
Try removing the single quotes from the path
#canvas{background-image: url(assets/bgs/bg8.png);}
If that doesn't work
Make sure that you entered the right path.
Double check that the id of the element is in fact canvas
(I personally think it's a less than optimal name since canvas is now also a class)
Simply put, what's the best way to simply add a store-wide background image in the RDW theme ?
I'm using the default RwD theme in Magento 1.9.2, and I can't seem to figure out how to just add an image, not insert it in CMS, not a block, just a static background image on the whole page instead of the default white colour.
I've been trying to add it, like you usually would, in styles.css
body {
margin: 0;
text-align:center;
font-family:futura;
background-image:url(../images/Fond-Portail.jpg);
background-size: 100% 100%;
background-position: center top;
background-attachment: fixed;
}
The URL should be correct, this is usually a very simple task but I think RWD makes it harder. The only solutions I've seen to this problem, while searching, were to use a community module, is it really that complicated or am I missing something ?
You can use the background size property like this. background-size:cover; and you can also try background-size:contain; if it works for you.
Forgot about this question! Here's how I fixed it :
First of all don't forget (like I did) to remove lines like background: #FFFFFF;, otherwise the color will be overlayed on top of your image.
Turns out you have to change this at multiple lines for RWD's styles.css,
I added the background image in BASE body{},
removed the colored background in RESET body{},
and changed the background color and size of GLOBAL .wrapper{} (depending on the way it's configured for you, I changed the width and made it partially transparent).
I need your help.
The Title in the green Box "News" appears right under this Link.
http://www.mjart.ch/category/news/
But because of this weird Template I'm using, there are sometimes some imperfections. On this Site here
http://www.mjart.ch/portfolio/
the Green title seems to disappear behind the padding border. I really don't know why.
What I found out is that there are 2 different CSS styles. The first one that works is a .blog-title and the second one is a .single-title. But both are same styled. I would be happy about some help.
Hi if you dont want to change the structure of the template you can add this css rules
.page-id-21 .single-page{
margin:0;
}
.page-id-21 .single-page .single-content{
margin-left: 25px;
}
I added a .page-id-21 class, otherwise in the contact page you will add a margin.
This can be a solution, another is to search the correct template page, if it's a premium plugin it will have it, and you dont need to add the css rules.
I'm sorry I cannot show you the code, it is currently on my localhost.
I am pretty sure I have correctly typed the code because Netbeans doesn't show any errors. I am making my parents website for their charity, Enough to Spare. When I load the webpage though, there is a white line on all sides (although you can't see the top line because that div is white)
Here is a screenshot.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I would recommend you use a reset.css file before your own.css, so you start with a blank slate.
You could always add -
html { width:100%; height:100%; margin:0 padding:0; }
body { width:100%; height:100%; margin:0; padding:0; }
http://www.cssreset.com/ - This is where I look to get my reset.css file
Thank you to Dan Ovidiu Boncut for reminding me to put in margin:0; and padding:0;!
Ninja edit: Have you tried using the Chrome Developer Tools? You can play with the css using that. Right click on an element and click on inspect, there you can add new css styles and edit your current ones. It is a brilliant way to find solutions to your css issues... it also shows you what line in your css file you're at, so when you come to make the changes in file you know where to look straight away! :)
In the CSS, try changing the padding of the container <div> to 0, because anything inside a <div> is also inside whatever padding it has, resulting in space between the padding and the border. Also try changing the margin to 0, because having a margin will result in space between the border and its container.
If you don't have a container <div>, or this didn't fix it, try setting the padding of the <body> tag to 0, because it's the outer-most container and might have default padding.
I also think there might be alternative ways to set background contents to ignore padding. Unfortunately, it's been a little while since I've worked in HTML and CSS, and I don't currently have time to experiment with that. But see what you can do with the above suggestions.
The fact that NetBeans doesn't show errors doesn't mean your presentation is the way you want it to be.
Check your containing divs. Check for any margins and/or paddings that could cause spacing. Borders as well.
If all fails use a CSS reset and check again.
You need to copy and paste the html and css involving your page elements, otherwise no one will be able to help you. Having your code on localhost has nothing to do with that.
The only thing that solved this problem for me was adding
body {overflow-x: hidden;}
to my CSS file. Once this works, I guess you can remove:
html { width:100%; height:100%; margin:0px padding:0; }
body { width:100%; height:100%; margin:0; padding:0; }
And also: quick tip for beginners: always use Command + Shift + R for a hard reload instead of a normal Command + R while testing solutions.
