Anyone familiar with Vimeo? Trouble with js_onLoad, broken? - vimeo

Hi all I was trying to get the vimeo "swfobject.html" example from git hub to work, but it simply doesn't work # github.com/vimeo/vimeo-api-examples/blob/master/moogaloop-api/javascript/swfobject.html
I debugged a bit, and realized it doesn't even enter the "js_onLoad" function. Does anyone know if this github code dated or is js_onLoad deprecated? I'm just trying to do a simple example of displaying the alert "hi" after the player is loaded, but I can't even get that far.
My very simple sample code is here: http://pastie.org/1110855. Does anyone see a problem?
Any fellow stackoverflowers versed in vimeo JS API? Cheers

I feel your pain. There's a bunch of inconsistent information about the vimeo API out there. But there are still parts that work. Check out the API Playground which works and demonstrates clearly how to do all sorts of useful things. The source code is on github. You can take apart the playground.html file and just leave in the parts that you need.
Important caveat about the playground.html file -- it doesn't work (for me) when running off a file:/// URL. It has to be coming off an http server to function at all. HTH.

I consider myself a bit of an expert on the Vimeo JS API. Their documentation and demo's are very poor, so I put together this little demo that I think it much easier to follow. It users jQuery and the iFrame embed method, but hopefully it helps:
http://labs.funkhausdesign.com/examples/vimeo/froogaloop2-api-basics.html
It shows how to listen for an event and fire a method.

After several experiments, it seems that events are only fired with the HTML5 version of the embed, not with the Flash version.
As the Universal Embed code (iframe) automatically selects the technology, I believe that the best way to go is to avoid using it and make your own embed.

Possible to embed Tumblr into other website?

I've been able to embed my latest 10 Tumblr posts into a website, but it doesn't include all of the functionality (comments, re-blogs, shares, etc.) of Tumblr. I'm really looking to do that, but I can't find an answer on this anywhere.
I know a lot of programming languages, so I'll take a solution in any language. The website IS a built-from-scratch website, so a Wordpress plugin won't help.
EDIT: Just to confirm (based on comments/questions below), we've followed the API documentation. We've got plenty of APIs working, but this one doesn't. We've tried gems, a Javascript version, the API with oauth and tokens, and more attempts than I can recall.
It's easy to do in Wordpress, and if we were doing it as a subdomain of a site, that would be possible. But the client (pro-bono) wants it embedded on a page that does lots of other things. Maybe there's a Javascript library we don't know about? Some other secret means of doing it? But the API (at least with available documentation) isn't working. Heck, even if you could direct us to a site where someone is using Tumblr embedded on a non-Wordpress/Tumblr website, that would be helpful. We could inspect the code.
We've got Twitter, Google Maps, and plenty of other APIs working. I swear we aren't idiots, and the answer to this isn't as easy as it appears.
THANKS!
If you want a clear example on how to use the JSON, check this link, it helped me tons:

Blank frame for jQuery Mobile Google Maps

I am integrating Google Maps with jQuery Mobile and .NET. I am following the Google Code (example 4) documentation here: http://jquery-ui-map.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/demos/jquery-mobile-example.html#jquery-mobile-example-4.html
I've been careful in transferring the code, but I keep receiving a blank frame. The map doesn't show up in the frame.
Anyone else run into this problem? Any recommendations on additional documentation, tutorials, videos, and reading?
I greatly appreciate anyone's time and help, thank you.
I think your problem is outlined here : http://www.smashinglabs.pl/gmap/examples
If, for any reason, any dimension of div will be equal 0 during
loading process, maps will stop working correctly. It is quite common
issue while loading tabs, accordions, etc.
He goes on to outline specific problem resolutions. Some of them:
Try calling the 'refresh' function manually google.maps.event.trigger($('#map').data('gmap').gmap, 'resize');
If your #map container doesn't have a set size, it will default to 0x0 by normal HTML/CSS standards. Try setting a size manually, say 300x300
etc...
It might be the google loader api key? (If you copy paste). Get any JS errors?
As Phill said, post some code and we'll be able to help you better.
If you are using jquery.ui.maps thats the wrong syntax. From what i can tell you are using another plugin.
Thank you for your time and help. After more research and additional help from others, I was able to find a Google Maps solution to get me moving more quickly. A great conversation that outlines resources I studied, used, and highlighted can be found in this google groups discussion.

Flash parser for html

As I was working on this project for a friend of mine who is terrified of changing from HTML to flash, I realized that maybe there could be a bridge between them. So I started working on a flash project that would grab the HTML from his page and parse it to display it in flash. Although I am sure there are resources available for this already, I figured that the experts on SO might be willing to suffer through the logic of one user trying to develop this script.
So basically, I am not asking for an answer, I am asking for some step-by-step direction that could be posted so other people could see the logic behind breaking down this project. I think it would be really useful (not just for me, but for anyone wanting to learn more about objects and oop).
So, much like the thread between primarily Senocular and Rampage, this would be a thread where I would be the student asking the questions in a logical step-by-step manner and someone else (or someones else) could provide guidance.
Let me know if you are interested and I can start by posting what I have already written. We can go from there and I am sure it will prove insightful to anyone who reads it. If no one is interested, or no one has the time or inclination, no problem.
Best wishes,
Jase
Who in their right mind would change from html to flash for displaying a simple website? I don't see the logic behind it, it's more like you are trying too hard. Flash has its function in the web, as well as html does. If it's just for simple displaying, using flash is just the wrong way and won't make your website any better but worse because its loading time will be too long.
Goole Search retrieved these:
HTMLWrapper
Groe.org HTMLParser
There is an article about the 1st on *drawlogic. I think the seconds' home is on sourceforge here.
Thing is, browsers already do a fine job at parsing html code. Having the flash player parse html files not only does away with any accessibility advantage your markup can offer but it also feels like reinventing the wheel. If you need to display html content, leave it to the browser.
Slightly offtopic - Flashpaper can convert most HTML pages into swf format.
Given properly "disciplined" HTML, you can use the XML parser in the player for the basic parsing. Are you really talking about writing an HTML renderer in Flash though? Or just being able to pull information from HTML dynamically?

Scraping hidden HTML (when visible = false) using Hpricot (Ruby on Rails)

I've come across an issue which unfortunately I can't seem to surpass, I'm also just a newborn to Ruby on rails unfortunately hence the number of questions
I am attempting to scrape a webpage such as the following:
http://www.yellowpages.com.mt/Malta/Grocers-Mini-Markets-Retail-In-Malta-Gozo.aspx
I would like to scrape The Addresses, Phones and URL of the next Page which in this case is
http://www.yellowpages.com.mt/Malta/Grocers-Mini-Markets-Retail-In-Malta-Gozo+Ismol.aspx
I've been trying just about anything i could think of but nothing seems to work due to them being set to invisible or so.
The Address is within an h3 tag but it does not appear to be scrap-able. I've been also looking into ScRUBYt from the following url http://www.rubyrailways.com/ajax-scraping-with-scrubyt-linkedin-google-analytics-yahoo-suggestions/, but i really cant seem to find heads or tails of how to apply them in this case.
I would really appreciate any pointers as this is an obstacle which i really need to surpass in order to move forward on my assignment. Thanks in advance for any help.
In the particular example you have given, the elements are not hidden, but loaded via ajax after the page load. So basically what you need is a http client which can run javascript (web browser?) to see those address and other contents.
If you want to really automate the process and scrape the data which is got through ajax or javascript, you can try selenium. Even though it is not developed for that purpose, it serves your needs.
I don't have an answer to your specific question, but I thought I'd point to Ryan Bates' Railscast episode on screen scraping with ruby: http://railscasts.com/episodes/173-screen-scraping-with-scrapi
He uses a library called scrAPI instead of ScRUBYt, since he couldn't get ScRUBYt working. scrAPI seems to be a bit easier maybe?
I hope this helps somewhat, good luck with your assignment! :)

There is a good script posted at the google group. It seems to extract address, etc. You may want to look at the code for the script page.txt.

How to check if mootools.js is actually being used within a web site?

I inherited a web site project that includes mootools.js (about 40k) in most of the scripts. However, I have not seen, intuitively, where it is being used and given the nature of this porject, ahem, I'm thinking it might not be being used at all!
I'm "under the gun" to ship this tonight (yup, it's a pre-Thanksgiving release). I have not used mootools.js so I'm not sure what to grep for or if there's a sure tell way to determine this. I don't want to have to JSLint it (or do I LOL). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Mootools grafts itself onto some of the native js stuff, so it might be hard to do just by code inspection unless you are very familiar with what MooTools gives you.
Remove it, run your automated tests.
Cause you have those, right?...
Remove it and see if anyone complains.
(You could try it on a test machine first, if you're not feeling brave.)
You can check your source code on some MooTools methods, for example, addEvent().
If it is used so here is the Mootols :)
Just check from the home page of http://mootools.net/
I also was interested on one site why they use jquery and mootools. So, I found addEvent() method. It is Mootols method.
You must have a dev version of the site. Just pull it out and go over pages see if stuff breaks. Mostly you will get unknown function type stuff, if there is any dependencies. Firebug is your friend.
1, Open firebug
2, Click the DOM tab
3, Check if the Mootools object exists (It will say the current version of mootools next to it).
Hope this helps
:)
