I'm looking for a database frontend which should have the following features
can access PostgreSQL and MySQL databases
can handle schemata
offers a nice sql query tool
supports an import and export functionality (something like tab separated text files)
it's free
looks awesome - every time when a colleague comes to my office he must
get the feeling: oh boy, this man really knows his job and should get more money!
At the moment I've used phpmyadmin, phppgadmin, pgadminIII, mysqladmin and dbVisualizer. Furthermore I was a big fan of the aqua datastudio until it became commercial. This tools offers a great variety of functionalities which can simplify a programmer's life. However, now you have to buy a license...I'm a scientist and money for software is limited. =)

My Swiss army knife for databases is SquirreL SQL.
universal client (JDBC based)
extensible (through plugins)
does the job
It's UI is not its biggest strength though. But I rate higher what I can do with it than the way it looks like.

OpenOffice Base can use ODBC to connect to almost anything, including PostgreSQL and MySQL.
Point 6 might be a problem... :(

I'm using mysql for my database needs and the total size is ~1.5 TB.
I'm looking for a Business intelligence tool which gives me an interface to fetch reports in any desired format to help decision making. The user shall be able to sum, sort, count, sum in various ways.
I don't know what shall I do about it.
In the past few days, I've read dozen of articles and watched many videos about Bigdata, hadoop, BIRT, Solr, Cassandra, mongodb, noSql and just everything that popped in search suggestions for my queries on BI but can't decide what's the right tool for me.
Is there a tool available to help me with my Data reporting and visualizing needs?
Did you read about Tableau (http://www.tableausoftware.com/)? Its a very nice data visualization tool (though not free but worth it) and can connect to various data sources (mysql, hive etc). Also it provides options to do all such operations you mentioned. It will be worth to evaluate it once.
It provides a 15 day free version. You can try out and see if it fits your needs.

I am writing a database application in C linux. Currently I work on mysql but later we might migrate to postgres. Therefore my boss has asked my to prepare the application to be able to use either of the databases(mysql or postgres).
Is there a free api which I can use for this purpose? Or any suggestion on how best I can do this?
The official answer to that is ODBC.
If you don't like that (and let's face it, no one really does), Qt has a database access module, QtSql. Obviously, this will require you to make heavy use of Qt in your application.
If you can find drivers for your platform, ODBC was supposedly meant to provide exactly this: a platform-independent way to talk to databases.
(I say supposedly because in my experience, ODBC is such a mess that hooking up to an ODBC driver once turned out to be more difficult than just writing the code three times for three different databases.)

I am looking into creating a simplified version of a CRM without having to reinvent the wheel on some of the base functionality.
Would you please recommend an open source CRM product that I could use?
NOTE: I would be interested in solutions with PHP or Java.
Have you looked at SugarCRM? It's pretty mature so it might not meet your "simplified" qualifier, but if I were in your shoes I'd probably consider starting there. It started life as an open-source project and there is still a "community edition".
Consider, however, that I have little familiarity with CRM in specific, so I can't comment one way or another on the quality of SugarCRM. Good luck.
For me VTECRM 4 is the best! It's based on sugar and vtiger crm and it's easy to use. You can download it and customize. It's based on php - mysql and it's free. dowload link: http://code.google.com/p/vtecrm/source/checkout
If you want a simplifed CRM, SugarCRM is NOT the place to start.
Have a look at Tine2.0. It has a demo online, it's built with PHP and ExtJS (so it feels like a desktop application) and is very easy to modify, and has a sizable community behind it (though the owner had the "vision" to split it by language, so unless you read German well, you'll have to use Google translate most of the time)
It doesn't do Gantt charts, but it does tagging.

I have searched the internet for drivers to connect to either database and all the projects I have seen have either been dead for a long time, look incomplete, or don't have good enough documentation to be usable without reading all the source.
Has anyone used Erlang to talk to either MySQL or PostgreSQL before and what sort of package did you use to do this?

I haven't personally used it as my erlang projects mostly talk to redis, but my quick scan of the source didn't reveal anything too terrifying.
Maturity is a relative thing, especially for more esoteric languages like erlang.
Erlang pgsql - The pgsql-driver is a 100% erlang implementation of the Postgres Frontend/Backend protocol.
Plain straight ODBC ? Quite simple to set it up, but a pain to make it work..

I know implementing database is a huge topic, but I want to have a basic understanding of how database systems work (e.g. memory management, binary tree, transaction, sql parsing, multi-threading, partitions, etc) by investigating the source code of the database.
Since there are a few already proven very robust open source databases like mysql, sqlite and so on. However, the code are very complicated and I have no clue where to start. Also I find that the old school database textbooks are only explaining the theory, not the implementation details.
Can anyone suggest how I should get started and if there are any books that emphasis on the technology and techniques of building dbms used in modern database industry?
I hate to sound like an grumpy, old academic, but the theory really is what you need to study, if you are determined to build your own RDBMS. The implementation details are really just, erh, implementation details. Apart from textbooks, you might also want to study research papers, which tend to cover the subject in higher detail.
When you start implementing your database engine, you could look into existing open-source implementations, but do expect the learning curve to be steep. As you have already discovered, these projects tend to be quite complex. When you have concrete questions to those projects, try posting them on the relevant mailinglists. When you have concrete questions about your own implementation, post them here :)

Refer, Database system implementation book by Ullman. Start with jdbc or odbc driver and move down to storage layer if you want to read from code.
