I get an error when running the following create table:
CREATE TABLE Event (
id VARCHAR(10) NOT NULL,
title VARCHAR(100),
start_date DATE NOT NULL,
end_date DATE,
description TEXT,
url VARCHAR(200),
website VARCHAR(200),
location VARCHAR(32) NOT NULL;
PRIMARY KEY (id),
FOREIGN KEY (location) REFERENCES Location(id)
);
The error I get is this:
#1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 9
I know that this error has to do with incompatibility with the syntax and the mysql version running, but I've checked every line and the syntax is correct according to the documentation. Am I missing something?

Try changing the semicolon on line:
location VARCHAR(32) NOT NULL;
to a comma.

varchar did not have number of characters specified in the original statement
This seems a fairly trivial problem but I am having no luck in running the following query:
create table if not exists tweet_data (
created_at DATETIME,
user_name VARCHAR(20),
retweet_count INT,
favourite_count INT,
tweet_followers_count INT,
is_retweet BOOLEAN,

user_location VARCHAR(256),
tweet_mentioned_count INT,
tweet_ID VARCHAR(256) NOT NULL,
tweet_text VARCHAR(140),
UNIQUE (tweet_ID) );
When I run this I get the following error message:
Error Code: 1064. You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual
that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use
near '(20), retweet_count INT, favourite_count INT,
tweet_followers_count ' at line 3
When I hover over the error tag on line 3 it says:
Syntax error : unexpected '(' (opening parenthesis)
I'm sure this is a simple fix, any help would be great!
Turned out to be an error with mySQL Workbench

I have written an sql script with the following contents :

and every time I try to run it in the SQL command prompt it keeps giving away the error as:
ERROR 1064 (42000) at line 5 in file: 'db_script.sql': You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MariaDB server version for the right syntax to use near ')ENGINE=InnoDB' at line 5
the script appears to be correct but I don't know why it keeps giving this error.

Correct syntax is
CREATE TABLE lil_urls (
id varchar(255) NOT NULL default '',
url text,
date timestamp NOT NULL,
PRIMARY KEY (id)
) ENGINE=MyISAM;
TYPE is no longer used and you need to use as ENGINE
And no need to specify length for timestamp
Creating a database for a class in PHP and MYSQL. Running into an error when creating the database, phpMyAdmin gives me a useless error message. (Software that gives a better error message would be awesome BTW)

I suggest you use a DB tool like MySQL Workbench to generate your tables. Then you can see the problems right away.
Juergen d edited your question for formatting, this might have helped you as well: Your initial statement was all on one line, so the error was flagged in that one line. If you edited it on multi lines (like in your question, or better in his answer) you might have gotten a better message, e.g. one that flags that the line containing carchar(20) contains a problem (it's even better the way he has it in his answer, but it correctly uses varchar(20), not flagging a problem)
Yes, it would be nice if error messages would immediately flag the problem, but sometimes it's already better when the input is formatted in a more human-readable way. I've tested the same with a multiline statement, mysql stated

Try this:
CREATE TABLE customers (
customer_id INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT
, first_name VARCHAR (20) NOT NULL
, last_name VARCHAR (40) NOT NULL
, PRIMARY KEY (customer_id)
, INDEX full_name (last_name, first_name)
) ENGINE = INNODB ;
You can use some GUI clients like SQLyog for this.
