div float to the right beside a centered div? - html

ive got one 4 links. i want them all in the same row. two of them in the center, and the other two in the right. ive wrapped them two and two, but i cant get it to work.
my css looks like this:
#links_center {
}
#links_right {
float: right;
}
but it doesnt work. the right links are under the first two links. could someone help me here.

Here's one way to do it, with the assumption that your links are in a fixed width container. Keep in mind that this isn't the only way, just a quick solution that may work for you:
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<title>Links Test</title>
<style type="text/css">
#links_center {
float: left;
width: 600px;
}
#links_right {
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div style="width: 800px">
<div id="links_center">
Link 1
Link 2
</div>
<div id="links_right">
Link 3
Link 4
</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>

float:right only works if the #links_right set comes before the #links_center set in the source code. Either rearrange the source code or use float:left on the center set and use padding/margins to place where you want.

It might help to CSS a determined width because it sounds like there might not be enough over all width for them to line horizontally. Also try to float left instead. Another option is making a table.

Solution on how to remove white space from top of website in a mobile phone browser like opera mini, single layout view

I tried almost every online technique, but I still got the top space in my website, when ever i open it with opera mini mobile phone browser,single layout view, so i decided to try fix it on my own, and I got it right!
I realize when even you display a page in a single layout, it fits the website to the screen, and some css functions are disabled, since margin, padding, float and position functions are disabled automatically when you fit to screen, and the body always add inbuilt padding at the top. so i decieded to look for at least one function that works, guess what? "display". let me show you how!
<html>
<head>
<style>
body {
display: inline;
}
#top {
display: inline-block;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="top">
<!-- your code goes here! -->
eg: <div id="header"></div>
<div id="container"></div> and so on..
<!-- your code goes here! -->
</div>
</body>
</html>

If you notice, the body{display:inline;} removes the inbuilt padding in the body, but without #top{display:inline-block;}, the div still wont display well, so you must include the <div id="top">
element before any code on your page! so simple.. hope this helps? you can thank me if it works, http://www.facebook.com/exploxi

Link to an element on the same page and have it centered in window

I am working on a page and it is a little lengthy, so I chose to link to sections of it using the method below:
Link
<div id="myID">Content that I would like in center of screen, rather than at the absolute top.</div>
Everything works correctly, as I am pretty proficient with basic stuff like this, but I am wondering if there is a way to make it so that the content I am linking to is a little farther from the top of the browser window, rather than immediately at the top. It doesn't have to be perfectly centered, maybe a margin of 100px or so would be fine.
Thanks
<head>
<script>
function change()
{
document.getElementById("myID").style.marginTop="100px";
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
Link
<div id="myID">Content that I would like in center of screen, rather than at the absolute top.sss
<pre>
s
s
s
s
s
s</pre>
</div>
</body>
All you need to do is add a little CSS:
#myID {
margin-top: 100px;
}
Hope that helps!

Logical Grouping of content (layout) without using Tables

I am new to web-designing styles and css. I read that usage of tables for layout is a bad practice. Hence I tried to create this layout using <br\> , div and float.
Problem :
Once, <br\> is applied, I can't render the upper part, (similar to once \n is printed in console, we cant go to the upper line).
So, could any one provide an alternative way of designing the page, without using <table> and <br> tags.
Looks like a perfect example usage of a grid system.
Without using a grid system, you can just use float: left for each of the div and it should be OK.
Here is simple example for doing so,
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<html lang="en-US">
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<title>StackOverFlow</title>
<style type="text/css">
.content{
width:150px;
height:100px;
border:1px solid blue;
}
.content .text{
display:block;
border:1px solid red;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div class="content">
<div class="text">
text here
</div>
<div class="text">
another text here
</div>
<div class="text">
yet another text here
</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>
Code Explanation
What i did is wrap text div inside content parent div and assign fixed width and height to parent div.
Now for child div i just used display:block and see the result. You do not need to use <br/> display:block; will do it for you.
Now what is the meaning of display:block; so it just tell browser to allow that particular DOM to take whole width of the parent div.
By adding css to DIV's you can get some great layouts (i.e the three column style you're looking for here) , try this aticle to get you started:

Align social buttons correctly

I am trying to put social buttons facebook and tweetmeme in our site. I liked the way it's done in yahoo sites. Please look
Yahoo Link
I looked at yahoo code, but the implementation style is very difficult to understand. It would be great if someone can help me in html/css coding.
Thanks.
Update
This is the code I have so far.. The issues I am having is Yahoo customized the css by changing the facebook and tweetmeme css behavior. Please check the attached image and compare with it. The code I am using is
<a name="fb_share" type="button_count" share_url="http://www.yahoo.com" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php">Share</a><script
src="http://static.ak.fbcdn.net/connect.php/js/FB.Share" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
tweetmeme_url = 'http://www.yahoo.com';
tweetmeme_style = 'compact';
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://tweetmeme.com/i/scripts/button.js"></script>
Please let me know, can we have exactly they have. I liked the look and feel of that. :)
Thank You.
I solved this for http://www.easynda.com using tips from http://neilgoodman.net/2012/01/14/making-social-buttons-line-up-in-a-row-in-css/ and some refinements.
I started by trying to use margins or padding in CSS to adjust the position of the social buttons, but that didn't work. Each button has slightly different margins and padding, which meant my adjustments never worked right and didn't look the same across browsers.
What's needed is to be able to accommodate the variation between buttons and to get them to stay where I put them in my HTML. The solution to is using floats. Max Design has a nice tutorial on floats with examples here: //css.maxdesign.com.au/floatutorial/introduction.htm.
Following the tips from Neil's site got me to here - but with clear problems.
(I'd post an image, but don't have enough reputation points yet).
The LinkedIn button sits at the top of its DIV while the FB buttons sits in the middle of it's DIV as seen in the first image. There are a couple of issues to note:
a: the FB share button width is minimum 90px per //developers.facebook.co.... All well and good, however, the width is dynamic based on the number of shares one has.
b: there is no margin between the FB share and LI share button -
c: the LI share button needs more width, and dynamic width as it will get it's own count as time goes on.
c: 20 px height is not enough for FB - even thought the FB button is only 20px, the JS adds pixels above the visible button. Also note that the bottom of the count bubble is cut off
d: and most obvious of all, the vertical positioning with LI riding high.
I solved the problem by floating a container holding the buttons with a line-height if 1 and using some CSS to float the buttons displayed inline with a min width, min height, and left padding.
The results are what was live as of the date of this posting (again, need reputation points to post images and more than two links)
Here is my HTML and CSS:
<div class="social-button-container" style="position: relative; z-index: 999;">
<!-- Facebook -->
<div class="social-button fb-like" data-href="http://easynda.com" data-layout="button_count" data-action="like" data-show-faces="false" data-share="true"></div>
<!-- LinkedIn -->
<div class="social-button">
<script type="IN/Share" data-url="http://www.easynda.com" data-counter="right"></script></div>
<!-- Twitter -->
<div class="social-button">
</div>
<div style="clear: both;"></div>
</div>
.social-button-container {
/*background-color: red;*/
/**
* This is a nice CSS trick that allows you to clear an element
* without having to add extra elements to your HTML. This helps
* separate content from design, which should always be an architectural
* goal.
*/
float: left;
line-height: 1;
}
.social-button {
float: left;
min-width: 100px;
display: inline;
min-height: 22px;
padding-right: 5px;
}
They are using an unordered list at the elements to show the buttons.
A UL is mostly used to show a list of items vertically but you can use CSS to make the items appear next to each other instead.
<ul>
<li style="display:inline">One</li>
<li style="display:inline">One</li>
</ul>
I think the above would work ok.
All you need to do then is right align it.
<div style="width:400px">
<ul style="float:right">
<li style="display:inline">One</li>
<li style="display:inline">One</li>
</ul>
</div>
Don't forget to use classes instead of inline styles like I have here.
Well, you basically just have to deal with the fact that one is an inline (a) element, the other a block (iframe) element, after that it becomes quite easy, just test that:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<style type="text/css">
#fb_share, iframe {
display: block;
float: left;
line-height: 2em;
margin: 0 1em 0 0;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<a id="fb_share" name="fb_share" type="button_count" share_url="http://www.yahoo.com" href="http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php">Share</a>
<script src="http://static.ak.fbcdn.net/connect.php/js/FB.Share"></script>
<script>
tweetmeme_url = 'http://www.yahoo.com';
tweetmeme_style = 'compact';
</script>
<script src="http://tweetmeme.com/i/scripts/button.js"></script>
</body>
</html>
Put your social media buttons into parent divs and give those divs an id each.
Target the inner iframe elements, e.g:
#fblikeblock iframe, #gplusblock iframe {
vertical-align: top !important;
}
where fblikeblock and gplusblock are the parent divs.
and use this on your parent divs:
#fblikeblock, #gplusblock {
display: inline !important;
position: relative;
zoom: 1;
}

IE6 anchor wordwrapping (display:block, width:0)

Unfortunaly this site we're developing has to be IE6 compatible. It contains a horizontal block style menu, but there's still one more problem with IE6.
I have the following code:
<html>
<head>
<style type="text/css">
a {
display: block;
width: 0px;
background-color: red;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
This is a anchor tag
</body>
</html>
Because of the spaces, it wraps every word on a new line. What do I need to do if I want it on a single line only?
Thanks!
Add this css on the a element:
white-space: nowrap
Have you tried popping your anchor into a span or div?
Well, don't set its width to 0 would be the cross-browser proper approach.
Use float: left instead, if you want the anchor to be displayed in block mode but not allocate 100% width.
When you use floats like that, you also need to make sure you clear them, to make them occupy space in their container:
<div>
<a ... />
<a ... />
<div style="clear: both;"></div>
</div>
