Sorry I know this is not really a programming question.
But when for example on the MySQL website you are given the option to download a .zip or .msi file. Is the result exactly the same application, or do the two work slightly different. I.e. the .zip option being more self contained, with everything under the MySQL folder and nothing in the registry etc.
This will help a lot towards my problem and future problems.
if I plan to have single MySQL installation on single box - I use .msi
With multiple installations on single box .zip packges are easier to handle.
If you follow the links from the download page you can find an answer to this on the MySQL website.

I got software from a developer who move and can't be located, I just got the files but not the source code.
The thing is my client won't be using this software again but he wants to be able to access his data files from another application (the one I'm offering him).
I'm really lost, I've never seen any database (not sure if this is a database) with this kind of files.
Can some one point me in the right direction?
This are the files:
This are some of the files they copy as their database for backup.
So I'm almost sure this is the database, if I open them with a text editor, I can see some data but not in a secuencial way.
I feel kind of dumb asking, I already tried to look for *.H## *.P## *.B## extensions in Google with out any luck.
Hope some one can point me in the right direction.
Edit: I found connection in control panel, does this help any one?
https://fileinfo.com/extension/h16
According to this it is H&R block desktop application which produces these file extensions.
I apologise in advance for I know that this question has been asked several times already, but being a complete beginner at wordpress coding and database handling, I am still not sure about what those answers really meant.
So having just coded a website and converted it into WordPress, I now find myself having to change all of the localhost strings to the accurate ones, but with hundreds to go through, I just wanted to know if any of you were able to recommend a program or technique within PHPMyAdmin (that I may not be aware of) to avoid having to change them one at a time.
Thank you all in advance for your time and attention.
First, let me start by saying this is very dangerous, especially for an absolute beginner such as yourself. Please use this with extreme caution as you can potentially bring the entire site down by replacing values in your database with the wrong data.
With that said, there is a script specifically designed for doing search and replace on the WordPress MySQL database. http://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/
Here's the direct download link: https://github.com/interconnectit/Search-Replace-DB/archive/master.zip
You will extract the folder from the donwloaded zip, then upload the folder to the root of your WordPress install. Once its uploaded just reference the folder in the browser. I always rename the folder to sr (shorthand for search and replace) so its easier to write out the full URL. So as an example, once its in the root of the WordPress install you'd access it like www.example.com/sr/.
After you access the script in the browser, you'll have a GUI with two boxes at the top. The first you'll enter the string you're searching for, and the replace string goes in the second box. Your MySQL details/login should already be populated. After entering your S&R terms scroll down and click "Update Details", then do the "Dry Run" option first. It'll run through the database and show you the values that will be changed. If you are satisfied with the changes, click "Live Run".
Depending on the database size it'll take just a short time to complete. This is the easiest way to S&R the WordPress database.
Important: for security reasons you'll want to delete this folder from your server after you have finished using it. You don't want a database S&R utility just lingering around for no reason.
Another possible option if you're familiar with WP-CLI is to use the wp search-replace command: https://developer.wordpress.org/cli/commands/search-replace/ This would be done through Terminal or another command line utility.
In phpMyAdmin open your table, choose Search > Find and replace. Then specify in which column you want to find and replace, and the original and replacement texts.
Without any doubt I would use http://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/
This tool is especially designed for the situation you describe.
You upload the code to your server and then enter the "find" and "replace"
You can then do a dry run and the system will show you all the replaces that will be made across every single table in your Wordpress database.
Once you're happy then you can do a live run and the changes are made.
I have used this on probably one hundred Wordpress sites and it works a charm.
Another noob question. I downloaded the open source mysql file from this link: https://github.com/twitter/mysql. After that, I have no clue how I set it up. I have Wamp installed in my PC. I'm trying to study the twitter mysql tables from the file. Please help, thanks.
That doesn't contain the tables used by Twitter; it contains a modified version of the mySQL server used by Twitter.
If you want to use it, you will need to build it from source.
However, as the README very clearly states, you should not use it.
Several times now I've had Eclipse delete files for me seemingly randomly - then they appear under the 'Local History' option.
What is going on! I'm definitely not just deleting things by mistake.
Most recently it deleted my template files under html-template which are quite important!
I have an AIR project and a web project that references the src directory inside the AIR project. Usually I close one project while working on the other.
FYI: Currently my backup solution is Windows Home Server which means I have to go home to find a file if its lost in some other fashion and not in history. Yes I do plan to rectify that!
Under Local History you can find the previous versions of your files, after you modified it.
Didn't you set this folder as the output folder for compiling? Then eclipse could clear the files during build.
I suspect it is an external application that is deleting or moving your files. Eclipse's local history simply keeps of copy of your files for quick reverting later.
I suggest trying using a different IDE for a while like NetBeans, and see if the files are still being deleted. Eclipse probably isn't the suspect, as those files would be in local history even if they were not deleted.
I am trying to fix an issue like this myself, I find that when I look into files that have been deleted with another text editor like GEdit, they look like they have been corrupted. I hadn't previously noticed that eclipse kept them in local history, thank you for that. I had been using gitHub for backups before and restoring from that.
If I find that switching to another IDE fixes it, or any other info, I will update this post.
I'm building an install using VS 2003. The install has an Excel workbook and two Access databases. I need to force the Access files to load regardless of the create/mod date of the existing databases on the user's computer. I currently use ORCA to force in a Version number on the two files, but would like to find a simpler, more elegant solution (hand editing a .msi file is not something I see as "best practice".
Is there a way to add a version number to the databases using Access that would then be used in the install?
Is there a better way for me to do this?

I don't think MsiFileHash table will help here. See this excellent post by Aaron Stebner. Most likely last modified date of Access database on client computer will be different from its creation date. Windows Installer will correctly assume that the file has changed since installation and will not replace it.
The right way to solve this (as question author pointed out) is to set Version field in File table.
Unfortunately setup projects in Visual Studio are very limited. You can create simple VBS script that would modify records in File table (using SQL) but I suggest looking at alternative setup authoring tools instead, such as WiX, InstallShield or Wise. WiX in my opinion is the best.
Since it sounds like you don't have properly versioned resources, have you tried changing the REINSTALLMODE property?
IIRC, in the default value of 'omus', it's the 'o' flag that's only allowing you to install if you have an older version. You may try changing this from 'o' to 'e'. Be warned that this will overwrite missing, older AND equally versioned files.
Manually adding in versions was the wrong way to start, but this should ensure that you don't have to manually bump up the version numbers to get them to install.
Look into Build Events for your project. It may be possible to rev the versions of the files during a build event. [Just don't quote me on that]. I am not sure if you can or not, but that would be the place I would start investigating first.
You should populate the MsiFileHash table for these files. Look at WiFilVer.vbs thtat is part of the Microsoft Platform SDK to see how to do this.
My other suggestion would be to look at WiX instead of Visual Studio 2003 for doing installs. Visual Studio 2003 has very limited MSI support and you can end up spending a lot of time fighting it, rather than getting useful work don.
