How come my verticle square bar on my website wont show up? - html

I tried to add a verticle bar thats stuck to the top right off my screen but it dosent show up for some reason, i tried everything i could. here is my code.
css: used for the style of my site, just uhh regular old code expect that it show anything thats located at the bottom of my website expressed by the overflow hidden thing. Anyways inspect element tells me that my gradient bar is at the bottom of the site even though its not supposed to be. see last couple lines of the css code for the bar.

Reasoning:
Due to the 'back' class div set to the height of '100vh' (Vertical Height), The following div with static positioning will sit just below the div with the class of 'back'
Solution:
Rearranging your code makes it visible just under the blue bar
<div class="bar">
<p>
Eaglercraft.xyz Launcher
</p>
</div>
<div id="close-button">×</div>
<div id="gradient-bar">
<p>aaseasea</p>
</div>
<div class="back">
<pi></pi>
</div>
To put it in the very top of the page I used the following
HTML:
<div id="gradient-bar">
<p>aaseasea</p>
</div>
<div class="bar">
<div id="close-button" style="top: 20px">×</div>
<!-- style attr to fix the cross -->
<p>
Eaglercraft.xyz Launcher
</p>
</div>
<div class="back">
<pi></pi>
</div>
CSS:
#gradient-bar p {
margin-top: 0;
position: relative;
}
And to half it you could set #gradient-bar width to 50%
And to put it in the top right corner you could put
#gradient-bar {
position: absolute;
right: 0;
}
Hoped I helped in some way!

My website seems to be scrollable when al the content fits on the page

I am having an issue with my project for my coding bootcamp.
Problem: My website seems to be scrollable even thought all my content fits on the page. I have tried to edit height, but it only throws the whole site out of wack.
Does anyone have a solution will prevent scrolling when it is not needed?
Thank you so much in advance.

<p>Welcome to my portfolio page. I would like to first thank you for taking the time to learn more about who I am. I love to build and scale companies. I have founded two previous companies, one was recently acquired. I am very fourtante to have had the opportunity to learn from my previous failures and successes.

<p>This year I made the decision that I want to be in a position to help other start-ups looking to grow and scale their own companies. I made the decision to go to the University of California, San Diego's, Full-Stack Coding Bootcamp program to sharpen my development skills.

There are two things you'll want to resolve to get it working correctly.
First set your box-sizing property, because you currently do not have one and the size of your boxes is being affected as a result. border-box is the preferred method. You can read the W3 Schools writeup on this if you'd like to better understand what border-box does: https://www.w3schools.com/css/css3_box-sizing.asp
The height of your #backgroundTest element is 100% height, and since it's a direct child of the <body> element it will be that height. It's 87px taller than you'd like because the #wrap element and the header inside it are 85px in height, plus the hr#clearfix that is 2px in height. If you adjust your #backgroundTest to account for this, it will be resolved. Change height to calc(100% - 87px)
On a side-note I recommend not adding a set height on your #footerBox element because the text is being cut off (height isn't enough, so just remove height property altogether and let it create its own height based on font-size, line-height, padding, etc.)

Make sections align

I am trying to align everything up, making the sections align and so forth. But I can't seem to get each section to line up.

Setting margin: auto, removing display: block and setting width to 100% instead of 120% makes it look quite okay. Is this what you were looking for?
https://codepen.io/anon/pen/PdmKWQ
The main issue you are having is because of .sign-up-form width styling. It is currently set to 120%, which is making the content weird. Remove it or change it to 100%.
Second issue I found is related to font-weight. The value of it is never in px. Review doc for more info.
Third issue remove the default margin on the page.

html/css image issue inside div

So I'm trying to create a landing page exactly like this (FYI, to work on my HTML/CSS skills, I have decided to exactly imitate this landing page just for practice!)
http://oi67.tinypic.com/b8qp8i.jpg
However, as you can see from what I did, the full background picture (sailing boat + ocean) does not show up in the first column: http://oi66.tinypic.com/o7ktgl.jpg
Another issue is that on the left side of the background image on the third column, I keep seeing on a small "broken page" icon (I don't know why it's there but it's really been annoying) ... is it an image problem or something wrong with the image file?
Help would be much appreciated, thank you!

The default margin-top on the nested p element is collapsing vertically, which essentially creates an equal margin-top on the parent .surf2 element (that is why you are seeing a space).
According to the spec, this doesn't occur if you establish a new block formatting context, which means that one option would be to set the overflow of the .surf2 element to something other than the default value visible. Changing it to auto or hidden would resolve the issue.

That's just one work around. See the spec for the specific rules relating to collapsing margins. You could also simply remove the margin from the p element.
For all your surf# classed elements, set their overflow to auto.
It appears that the margin on the children on the 2nd div is pushing the first div up.
I recommend either adding a unifying class to those elements or use this rule:
[class^="surf"] {
overflow: auto;
}
You need to set the class="title1" margin to 0px. -> margin: 0;

How to set max-width for DIV contents but not the DIV itself?

UPDATE: Here's a Fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/720v4zdy/8/
I'm customizing a tumblr blog to match someone's site and it's almost in good shape. We started with a theme that already matched it closely and then made some changes in CSS.
The last problem I can't solve is how to make the navigation bar stretch the entire page while containing all of the links in a max-width of 1024px.
Here's the tumblr blog WIP: http://craftysheepblog.tumblr.com/
I want the navigation bar to stretch the entire page, but the links to be contained with a max-width of 1024px. The trouble here is I only have one DIV to do this with, so I'm not quite sure how to make it happen.
I'm using this currently, which works somewhat. It gets ugly when you make the browser window smaller though.
#top nav {
background-color: rgb(45, 50, 51);
color: white;
text-align: left;
padding: 11px 22%;
margin-top: 20px;
width: 100%;
}
You can set the nav to max width: 1024px and fill the "gaps" on the sides with ::before and ::after pseudo elements. You'll need to hide the overflow on header#top to avoid sideways scrolling, because the pseudo elements are set wider than the content.
This does rely on you setting the height of your nav and following suit with the <a> (height, line-height, etc.) ...
Also - tweak some more; there is a 600px break point in your CSS on the live site that will interfere with this (along with a lot of your extra CSS that I didn't clean up).
body {
color: rgb(38, 39, 43);
font-family: "Open Sans", "sans-serif", Arial;
font-weight: 300;
font-size: 14px;
line-height: 1.42857143;
margin: 0;
}
#top {
overflow: hidden;
}
#top .title {
font-family: "Open Sans", "sans-serif", Arial;
font-size: 30px;
text-align: left;
font-weight: lighter;
margin-top: 18px;
display: block;
width: 100%;
max-width: 1024px;
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
}
#top nav {
background-color: rgb(45, 50, 51);
color: white;
text-align: left;
max-width: 1024px;
margin: 50px auto 20px;
height: 50px;
width: 100%;
border-width: 0;
padding: 0;
position: relative;
}
#top nav::before{
background: rgb(45,50,51);
content: "";
display: block;
position: absolute;
height: 50px;
width: 100%;
right: 100%;
}
#top nav::after{
background: rgb(45,50,51);
content: "";
display: block;
position: absolute;
height: 50px;
width: 100%;
left: 100%;
top: 0;
}
#top nav a {
border-bottom: 1px solid rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);
font-size: 13px;
letter-spacing: 1px;
font-weight: 600;
margin: 0px 15px;
}
#top nav a {
color: #fff;
font-size: 13px;
text-transform: none;
font-family: "Open Sans", "sans-serif", Arial;
font-weight: 300;
border: 0;
display: inline-block;
padding: 0 1em;
margin: 0;
height: 50px;
line-height: 50px;
}
#top nav a:hover {
color: #52A708;
}
#top .headimg {
display: none;
}
<header id="top">
<div class="row">
<div class="small-12 small-centered columns">
<a href="/" class="active">
<div class="title">Page Title</div>
</a>
<nav>
<a class="page" href="#">Link 1</a><a class="page" href="#">Link 2</a><a class="page" href="#">Link 3</a>
</nav>
</div>
</div>
</header>
How about using max-width: 1024px;
The best way to do this is to use a ul inside of a div as your navigation bar. The ul can contain all of your links. That way, the div can have a width that spans the entire page while the unordered list has a max width of 1024px.
Example code:
<html>
<head>
<style>
#nav {
width: 100%;
height: 20%;
}
#nav-links {
max-width: 1024px;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="nav">
<ul id="nav-links">
<li>Link 1</li>
<li>Link 2</li>
<li>Link 3</li>
<li>...</li>
</ul>
</div>
</body>
</html>
Then you can style your ul as a nav bar however you like. Here's a good link for that: http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_navbar.asp
With the amount of information you have shared it is hard to say. Obviously the cleanest way to accomplish this is to insert another element (div or otherwise) around these child elements, and assign it a max-width... however this does not sound as if it is an option for you?
If you know how many elements you want to make up the 1024px, you could assign their widths manually (i.e. give each of the four children a width of 256px, or something similar).
If you do not know any of these things, and your options for the space are limited, Javascript is your best option. You could write a script that counts the children, and either assigns their widths appropriately or inserts clears at the proper location.
If you expand your question to target a specific approach, I'm sure myself and the many gurus on here will be able to give you more specific guidance.
Use flexbox: https://philipwalton.github.io/solved-by-flexbox/
The links should stretch as normal but start to shrink when they each exceed 341px which is 1023px as a total width.
Note: Snippet best viewed in Full Page mode.
