Layering a Bootstrap column on top of another column - html

How does one overlay a bootstrap column on top of another column, but also keep its size and responsiveness?
For example, I have 4 columns in a row:
When I click on the Overlay btn, it should show the E column over B:
I currently have this test code I am playing with:
Live jsfiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/8pmt6ck2/2/
$(".a .btn").click(function() {
$(".e").toggleClass("d-none");
});
.one .a {
background-color: red;
}
.one .b {
background-color: blue;
}
.one .c {
background-color: green;
}
.one .d {
background-color: pink;
}
.one .e {
background-color: orange;
}

I am using d-none for E because it does not take up space, otherwise it'll cause Bootstrap to think there are 5 columns, when it's actually 4 columns and one overlay column (on top of B).
The above code sort of works due to position-absolute, but it's in the wrong location, and the column size is not the same as the other 4 columns (appears wider):
Part of the confusion also stems from the bootstrap documentation. It appears if I use position-absolute, I can only position things in certain quadrants of the screen, using top-, start-, end-, and bottom-:
https://getbootstrap.com/docs/5.0/utilities/position/
But because I need this to be responsive and match the column width and such of existing columns in the row, those positioning classes don't help me much here.
How can I overlay my E column properly? Ideally the solution should work for any number of columns in a row, not just 4 like I have above.

Absolute positioning is often problematic and unnecessary. Just toggle the columns in standard layout.
$(".a .btn").click(function() {
$(".b, .e").toggleClass("d-none");
});
.one .a {
background-color: red;
}
.one .b {
background-color: blue;
}
.one .c {
background-color: green;
}
.one .d {
background-color: pink;
}
.one .e {
background-color: orange;
}

If you actually need both columns visible, I'd propose toggling contents instead of columns. Here you will use absolute positioning. I'm also toggling the style class on the column.
$(".a .btn").click(function() {
$('.b-e').toggleClass('b e');
$(".b-e .col-overlay").toggleClass("d-none");
});
.one .a {
background-color: red;
}
.one .b {
background-color: blue;
}
.one .c {
background-color: green;
}
.one .d {
background-color: pink;
}
.one .e {
background-color: orange;
left: 0;
right: 0;
}

Target first class that contains string (CSS)

I'm created blocks in WPBakery and have the following markup generated for a block (yeah, it's really messy, I know):
<div class="wrapper">
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-sm-12">
<div class="vc_column-inner">
<div class="wpb_wrapper">
<div class="myCustomDiv">
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-12">
test
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
What I'm trying to do is the apply padding: 0 to the first column in container-fluid (so wrapper > container-fluid > row > col-sm-12).
To do this, I have the following:
.container-fluid:first-of-type [class*=col-] {
padding: 0;
}
However, the above makes all col classes have padding: 0. How can. I only target the first col class under container-fluid?
You can literally use > selector straight from you own question:
/* You might want to be more specific after 'div',
but since it doesn't have any siblings it's sufficient */
.container-fluid > .row > div {
padding: 0;
}
Narrow down the elements to select by first-of-type and the parent class name to which it applies:
.container-fluid:first-of-type .myCustomDiv .container:first-of-type [class*=col-] {
padding: 0;
}
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.4.1.slim.js"></script>
<link href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.4.1/css/bootstrap.css" rel="stylesheet" />

<link href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.7.0/css/font-awesome.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<div class="wrapper">
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-sm-12">
<div class="vc_column-inner">
<div class="wpb_wrapper">
<div class="myCustomDiv">
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-12">

</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-12">
test2
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="row">
<div class="col-12">
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-12">
test3
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
My understanding is that you can't use first-of-type with class names like this. See this answer for more info:
CSS3 selector :first-of-type with class name?
Now specifically with your case you have two issues – you don't want the change applied to either siblings or children of the first col- class, right? The work around shown in the link above is that you need to apply the style to the first div with that class, but then remove that styling for subsequent instances.
To find the further children use:
.container-fluid [class*=col-] [class*=col-]
To find the siblings use:
.container-fluid [class*=col-] ~ [class*=col-]
In the snippet below I've changed the styling to font color to make it easier to see.You'll see it's only applied to the first div with a 'col-' class name, and not to its children or siblings.
.container-fluid [class*=col-] {
color: red
}
.container-fluid [class*=col-] [class*=col-] {
color: black
}
.container-fluid [class*=col-] ~ [class*=col-] {
color: black
}
<div class="wrapper">
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-sm-12">
test
<div class="vc_column-inner">
<div class="wpb_wrapper">
<div class="myCustomDiv">
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-12">
test
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div class="col-sm-12">
test
<div class="vc_column-inner">
<div class="wpb_wrapper">
<div class="myCustomDiv">
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-12">
test
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
Try this:
UPDATE:
I suppose you are looking for this: ( this will select the first div from inside container-fluid which contains classes attribute that have col-sm ... if you want to select classes that contains just "col-", remove the sm
.container-fluid div[class*="col-sm"]:first-of-type {
padding: 10px;
}

How to make elements the same height

I made an example to represent my current issue.
I want this structure. I tried height: 100% on the blue part but it didn't work, so I gave height: 80vh.
This is an issue because nothing is aligned anymore and gets worse if you make the windows smaller or bigger (not responsive).
How do I make the left and right side of the content aligned at the top and bottom with a margin-top of 5px to the black part?
.red {
background: red;
}
.blue {
background: blue;
height: 80vh;
}
.green {
background: green;
}
img {
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
}
.black {
background: black;
margin-top: 5px;
}

I tackled something similar to this and whipped up a jQuery solution to it that you might want to try, it's been working great for me.
Basically the function gets the height of the column you know is going to be the tallest. If that content is larger than the others it sets the height of the others to the same of the taller piece of content.
$(document).ready(function () {
var tallest = $(".red").height();
var shortcolumn1 = $(".blue").height();
if (tallest >= shortcolumn1) {
$(".blue").css("height",""+ tallest +"px");
$(".green").css("height",""+ tallest +"px");
}
else {
}
});
Change CSS, Your Footer height 25px;
.red {
background: red;
height:calc(50vh - 12.5px);
}
.blue {
background: blue;
height:calc(100vh - 25px);
}
.green {
background: green;
height:calc(50vh - 12.5px);
}
.red {
background: red;
height:calc(50vh - 12.5px);
}
.blue {
background: blue;
height:calc(100vh - 25px);
}
.green {
background: green;
height:calc(50vh - 12.5px);
}
img {
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
}
.black {
background: black;
margin-top: 5px;
}

How to draw equal horizontal lines between one button to another in angular 4

Here I am trying to draw a horizontal line between the buttons. I have tried in many ways but I can't get it. I think I need to do some magics in CSS but I am new to HTML and CSS That's why I can't find the way to make it work.
I want:
I got this:

.divider {
flex-grow: 1;
border-bottom: 1px solid black;
margin: 5px
}
<div class="col-sm-9" style="padding-left:0px;padding-right:0px">

I think you're trying to do the same as you would do when using a stepper
https://material.angular.io/components/stepper/overview
Using import {MatStepperModule} from '#angular/material/stepper';
and the correct elements will do the trick
You can use :after psuedo class
.divider:after {
height:1px;
width:40px;
content:'';
background: red;
position:absolute;
right:0px;
top:15px;

I am trying to have result similar to this. The coloured borders are only for representation .
You are setting the styles to the center div, instead it should be the label inside the center div
<!DOCTYPE html>

<script src="script.js"></script>
<style>
div.row div{
border: 1px solid black;
padding: 10px;
}
.centre label{
display: block;
text-align: center;
vertical-align: middle;
background: yellow;
height: 100%;
padding:5px;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-md-3 centre">
<label>Address</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<div class="row"><!--nested row one-->
<div class="col-md-6">
<label>Street</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<input name="stname">
</div>
</div>
<div class="row"><!--nested row two-->
<div class="col-md-6">
<label>Landmark</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<input name="lmark">
</div>
</div>
<div class="row"><!--nested row three-->
<div class="col-md-6">
<label>Zip code</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<input name="zipcode">
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div><!--row end-->
</div>
</body>
</html>
you can add this code in your CSS file to get vertical-align.
but first, you have to add a new class with row class
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/3.3.7/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" integrity="sha384-BVYiiSIFeK1dGmJRAkycuHAHRg32OmUcww7on3RYdg4Va+PmSTsz/K68vbdEjh4u" crossorigin="anonymous">
<script src="script.js"></script>
<style>
.vertical > div {
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
float: none;
}
.vertical > div {
display: table-cell;
vertical-align: middle;
float: none;
}
div.row div{
border: 1px solid black;
padding: 10px;
}
.centre label{
display: block;
text-align: center;
vertical-align: middle;
background: yellow;
height: 100%;
padding:5px;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row vertical">
<div class="col-md-3 centre">
<label>Address</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<div class="row"><!--nested row one-->
<div class="col-md-6">
<label>Street</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<input name="stname">
</div>
</div>
<div class="row"><!--nested row two-->
<div class="col-md-6">
<label>Landmark</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<input name="lmark">
</div>
</div>
<div class="row"><!--nested row three-->
<div class="col-md-6">
<label>Zip code</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<input name="zipcode">
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div><!--row end-->
</div>
</body>
</html>
Here's a solution setting top margin/padding on columns not nested then cancelling top margin/padding in nested ones:
Plunkr
Relevant CSS:
[class*="col-"] {
border: 1px solid black;
padding: 10px;
}
.row:first-child [class*="col-"] {
margin-top: 10px;
background-color: lightgreen;
}
.row .row:first-child [class*="col-"] {
margin-top: -10px;
background-color: pink;
}
.row .row:not(:first-child) [class*="col-"] {
margin-top: 0;
background-color: lightblue;
}
Solution by #codegeek which avoids these problems is better imho :)
Code Pen
You can remove the offset and match it up to 12-grid system.
div.row {
border: 1px solid black;
padding: 10px;
}
.centre {
background: yellow;
top: 60px;
border: 1px solid blue;
}
<link href="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/twitter-bootstrap/3.3.7/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet" />
<div class="container">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-xs-3 centre">
<label>Address</label>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-8 col-sm-offset-1" style="border:1px solid green">
<!--You can remove style and remove offset and change it to sm-9 -->
<div class="row">
<!--nested row one-->
<div class="col-xs-6">
<label>Street</label>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-6">
<input name="stname">
</div>
</div>
<div class="row">
<!--nested row two-->
<div class="col-xs-6">
<label>Landmark</label>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-6">
<input name="lmark">
</div>
</div>
<div class="row">
<!--nested row three-->
<div class="col-xs-6">
<label>Zip code</label>
</div>
<div class="col-xs-6">
<input name="zipcode">
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<!--row end-->
</div>
As for now, margin-top is a worth option trying.
I positioned the left div by using top: 50%(takes the height of the parent) and then using translateY, which takes the height of the current element.
Since relative positioning didnt take % values, I have used absolute.
But giving absolute makes the div come out of the document flow, hence used "left" for the right sibling with the width of the left sibling.
.parent{
position: relative;
}
.centre{
background: yellow;
position: absolute;
top: 50%;
transform: translateY(-50%);
}
.right{
left: 25%;
/* width of left sibling, since col-md-3 is 25%*/
background: lightgreen;
}
Plnkr Link(with bootstrap) or JsFiddle (without Bootstrap)
Result:
Your vertical-align:middle doesn't work, because elements with display: block cannot be centered that way. An easy alternative would be to use display: flex.
Here is a snippet to demonstrate the way display:flex can be used to center pretty much everything:
div.row div{
border: 1px solid black;
padding: 10px;
}
.centre{
display: block;
text-align: center;
vertical-align: middle;
background: yellow;
height: 100%;
}
.flex {
display: flex;
align-items: center;
}
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="flex">
<div class="col-md-3 centre">
<label>Address</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<div class="row"><!--nested row one-->
<div class="col-md-6">
<label>Street</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<input name="stname">
</div>
</div>
<div class="row"><!--nested row two-->
<div class="col-md-6">
<label>Landmark</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<input name="lmark">
</div>
</div>
<div class="row"><!--nested row three-->
<div class="col-md-6">
<label>Zip code</label>
</div>
<div class="col-md-6">
<input name="zipcode">
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div><!--row end-->
</div>

Bootstrap 4: Full Width Inline Button

The title might be misleading, but I didn't know how else to name it.
In any case, I need to have an div/image inlined with a text, and a button beneath that text. The issue is, I can't really make the button take the full width without adding any padding, no matter what I try.
To make my explanation clearer, here's an image of what I'm trying to make:
And I'm trying to use Bootstrap 4 utilities only.
This is my code so far:
.col-md-3 {
background-color: #ededed;
}
.img {
width: 188px;
height: 88px;
background-color: #292a2c;
}
.btn {
background-color: #292a2c;
color: #ededed;
}
<div class="col-md-3 d-flex p-0">
<div class="img"></div>
<div>
<h6 class="m-auto">Text goes here</h6>
<button class="btn rounded-0 btn-block">Button</button>
</div>
</div>
How can I make this work? Also, the div with a class .img is a placeholder in a way, and needs to stay like that.
Thank you!
You can achieve this by using bootstrap media object with no additional css. Please see code snippet below
<link href="https://stackpath.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.4.1/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-12">
<div class="media">
<img src="https://via.placeholder.com/188x88" class="mr-3" alt="">
<div class="media-body">
<h5 class="mt-0">Media heading</h5>
<button class="btn btn-primary btn-block">Button</button>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
You can try something like this, then style it accordingly:
<div class="container-fluid">
<div class="row">
<div class="col-4">
<img src="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ79Qe630Fli9-SIDz188GQURmrRfhh6AksMKexPP5JvsE7AJ6t01mf5A">
</div>
<div class="col-8">
<div class="row">
<p>text</p>
</div>
<div class="row">
<button>button</button>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>
Here is the code for getting as shown in the image
'<div class="col-md-12"><div class="row"><div class="col-md-3"><div class="row"><div class="img"></div></div></div>
<div class="col-md-6"><div class="row">
<h6 class="m-auto">Text goes here</h6><button class="btn rounded-0 btn-block">Button</button></div></div></div>
For style use the style in your question
You could do something like this.
Note that Bootstrap by default does not have a black background class so you would have to create one.
.bg-black {
background-color: #000 !important;
border: 2px solid #000 !important;
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0-alpha.6/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<div class="container-fluid"> <!-- Make it full width -->
<div class="row d-flex"> <!-- display flex -->
<div class="col-4 align-self-stretch"> <!-- stretch the column -->
<img class="w-100" src="http://placehold.it/200x200" />
</div>
<div class="col-8 align-self-stretch"> <!-- stretch the column -->
<p>Some Text Here.<br/> Can be long or short</p>
<p>Yet another paragraph</p>
<p>And one more paragraph</p>
<button class="btn btn-primary bg-black btn-block rounded-0">Btn Txt</button>
</div>
</div>
</div>
<script src="https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.1.1.slim.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/tether/1.4.0/js/tether.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0-alpha.6/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>
.col-md-3 {
background-color: #ededed;
width:100% !important;
}
.col-md-3> div{
display:inline-block;
float:left;
width: 60%;
height:100%;
}
.img {
width: 15% !important;;
height: 88px !important;
background-color: #292a2c;
display:inline-block;
}
.btn {
width: 60%;
background-color: #292a2c;
color: #ededed;
height:50%;
display:inline-block;
}
<div class="col-md-3 d-flex p-0">
<div class="img"></div>
<div>
<h6 class="m-auto">Text goes here</h6>
<button class="btn rounded-0 btn-block">Button</button>
</div>
</div>
Everything looks good just make sure that you have bootstrap.css file in right place and make sure that its working.
I made some changes to your code, its a bit hard coded but u must take care to overwrite bootstrap classes and don't change them directly.
.box {
background-color: #ededed;
}
.img {
width: 188px;
height: 88px;
background-color: #292a2c;
float: left;
margin-right: 5px;
}
.text {
float: left;
}
.btn {
background-color: #292a2c;
color: #ededed;
margin-top: 33px;
}
<link href="https://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/bootstrap/4.0.0-alpha.6/css/bootstrap.min.css" rel="stylesheet"/>
<div class="col-md-6 d-flex p-0">
<div class="box">
<div class="img"></div>
<div class="text">
<h6 class="m-auto">Text goes here</h6>
<button class="btn rounded-0 btn-block">Button</button>
</div>
</div>
</div>
